Video Transcript for Ultra-Fab Motor Home Solar-Powered Plumbing Vent Review and Installation

Shane: Hey guys. Shane here with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to walk you through how to install Ultra-Fab's solar powered plumbing vent. This is what it's going to look like when it's installed. What's nice about this being solar power, we're not going to have to worry about wiring anything up. It's going to have a fan inside.

What the fan is going to do is it's going to pull out any of that smell out of your black water tank and also remove any, or help remove any, moisture that may be maybe escaping into your camper. It's going to be very durable plastic. So we're not going to worry about it breaking apart. We're not going to worry about it rusting or corroding or anything like that. It's going to be white in color so it's really going to match well with all your other roof components. And it's going to be three and three quarter inches tall.

So it's really not going to take up a whole lot of space. It's not going to be really any taller than maybe your gray water tank vent that you may have on there. As far as the installation, it's very simple. It's only going to require a few simple tools. Let's go ahead and walk through the installation now. To start our installation, we need to make sure we're installing this on our black water tank pipe.

With our fan, you see it's not touching the roof. So what we're going to have to do is we're going to have to cut this pipe down enough so it's not touching this fan. It allows this fan to spin freely. I'm just going to use a rotary tool with a plastic cutting blade, and we're going to cut it down as much as we need to. You may or may not need to do this.If you have to cut your pipe, once you get it done, make sure you clean the area.

You're going to need some butyl tape. It's not going to come with your vent, but you can find it here at etrailer.com. Nice thing about it is if you ever have to replace any of your other vents on top of your roof, you're going to be using it. So any extra you have, save it and you can use it later on.What we're going to do is we're going to flip this over like this. We're going to run it right over top where our screws are going to be mounting to our roof. We want to make sure we go all the way around the edge. Now we're simply going to take our vent, set it over the top like this, take our included hardware, a Phillips screwdriver, and sink it down to the roof. What the butyl tape does, is not only seals around the edge, but as you run the screw through it, it's going to grab some of the butyl tape and it's going to run that butyl tape down in that hole to seal the hole. It's going to help keep any water from getting down in there. Now we need to take some Xtreme self-leveling sealant and we're going to run it right along the edge here. This is also not going to come with the vent. I highly recommend it. It works great and it looks really nice once it settles in place. You can find it here at etrailor.com.Once you get your self-leveler on, go back through and just kind of check it, make sure. You want to make sure it's touching the edge here and it's coming all the way over to your roof membrane. Make sure everything's covered, including your screws. Once you get that on, you want to make sure you let it sit for 24 to 48 hours so it dries. Don't just put it on and go take off and travel with it because it will start to come off. Once it cures, you'll be ready to go and you'll be sealed up.You can see this vent here. This one's actually been sitting for about 12 hours, so you can see how it kind of settles and kind of floats out a little bit, gets a little bit wider. So it helps really cover that area really well and seal it up well from any water. That's going to do it for a look at and installation on the Ultra-Fab solar powered plumbing vent.

We have a Suncast storage building and it was beastly hot inside on sunny days so I put some foam insulation between the inner and outer surfaces and installed 2 of these just below the ridgeline of the roof and they are working great. There is absolutely no noise what-so-ever. While they have a limited volume it takes the hot air out allowing cooler air to enter through the normal vents. Great deal for the money and now we will see how long they last making the value even better.

Still running. Wish it had off switch when not needed. Constant noise though minor. May replace when fails but would look for one with off switch.

I installed the Ultra-Fab Solar-Powered plumbing vent sold by E-Trailer on my 13 ft. Scamp trailer to circulate and vent air in the trailer while it is being stored. There is indirect sunlight incident to the solar-powered vent that shines through some pine trees. The vent works perfectly. I installed a 4-in. air conditioner duct (sold by etrailer,Valterra Heating And A/C Vent Register) with built in flappers to regulate the air flow thru the solar-powered vent and to make the appearance of the vent look better from the inside of the trailer. Also made a trim ring out of a plastic cutting board to garnish the solar-powered vent inside opening. Look great and works like gang busters.

Comments
I had to replace the solar powered vent after one year of service. It was no longer operable. I took the malfunctioning vent apart and found that the seal at the solar panel directly above the motor had failed and permitted water to damage the motor. I installed a second new solar powered vent and took the time to place additional sealant between the solar panel ant its mounting plate.

Very nice quality. Spins up in partial sun and is very quiet. My only concern is how long it will hold up to the Arizona sun.

Still working after a year on a shed to provide ventilation in Arizona where it gets over 105 degrees for weeks on end in the summer.

I used this roof mounted solar powered plumbing vent to exhaust excess heat from an enclosed 5x8 trailer. The inside of the trailer remains somewhat close to ambient temperature

I am an Rv'er, but actually installed this outlet/exhaust fan on top of my shed. Living in S. Georgia, it gets quite hot and humid, and this thing has been spinning non-stop all year round. I sealed the circumference with all weather silicon as I bolted it down. Outstanding device, and I'll probably get one for my toy hauler as well!

Comments
Its been over a year and a half and that little fan is still moving strong, even on overcast days!

I didn't use my solar vent quite as intended. I mounted it into the top of a modified Rv roof vent (which I keep closed typically). This is a replacement. The first lasted about 5 years but ultimately the plastic degraded in the sun and became brittle. I assume this will do the same over time. We shall see. Works as intended. Keeps a little air flowing through the rv. Wish there were bigger solar fans for this job.

- UF53-945001
by:

Installed this on top of my 8x8 shed for airflow and ventilation purposes. I've had it for a year now and it still runs almost all day. Sunny or even overcast skys will have it humming along. I was concerned with the plastic blades becoming brittle and not being able to withstand the highs and lows of Michigan's climate, but no issues thus far. I recommend this for a solar powered shed roof vent, but cannot give a review as to its intended rv venting capabilities.

- UF53-945001
by:

I installed this vent on the roof of a 6x12 cargo trailer. It worked well right out of the box, even during a cloudy day. Other reviews suggested adding a screen to keep insects out and so I did. The trailer will sit out in the hot Florida summer sun, and when I return later this year, I'll post an update on how well it performed. So far, so good.

I PURCHASED TWO OF THESE FOR MY RV. LESS THAN A YEAR IN ONE IS MAKING A RATTLING NOISE. VERY ANNOYING

- UF53-945001
by:

seems to work as described. Does take a fairly bright sky to work...but not necessarily direct sun. As an FYI, fan was not on shaft when arrived. After I figured it went on with the embossed arrow showing rotation so that it could be seen, I firmly pushed it on the shaft but it was noisy when spinning. I pulled it back just a tiny bit and it ran noiselessly. Installation went smoothly. I did have to cut about 2 inched off vent pipe so the the fan did not hit the pipe. I also removed the 3 screws to separate the base from top (fan and solar panel) to make the base easier to install then reattached after base was fully installed.

Product took longer than expected to arrive. Package was well packed and protected. Have not had a chance to try unit or install yet so cannot review or rate performance. Service and ease of web site was very user friendly, I would recommend for purchases. Overall, great job...

Installed unit after my 7/30/14 post and it has been working great ever since. Does not push a lot of air mass but I am sure it pushes more than no fan or at least as good as any similar product. The positive here is the solar. It does not have to be in direct sunlight by any means to operate.Great product IMHO!I dont use it on a trailer but on a small LifeTime plastic shed as it get very warm in there sometimes. So this product has other applications...

Runs so quietly that it's hard to tell it's working. But I installed it on the top of my small trailer, where temps had soared to 119 Fahrenheit, and now the temps are much closer to ambient.

- UF53-945001
by:

We have 4 of these units in service for going on a year now and only one has had any problem. One of the motors had the front end bearing/bushing fail and the unit made a ticking sound when the fan would wobble. The one issue I had a problem with was that when I ordered another to have a spare on hand I found the price had increased from that of last year. While we generally expect that prices will rise over time, having been following solar for a potential solar addition to our home I was otherwise finding that solar was going down in price as the technology was improving so that was a bit of a surprise but overall I believe they are still a good deal for the money.

Found these at the local trailer place, except they were way overpriced! I replaced the entire roof with metal roofing and these were the only ones that would fit between the ribs. Haven't installed yet, but the customer service so far has been TOP NOTCH! with extremely quick shipping and great follow up to ensure my satisfaction. Recommend this site, keep up the great work!

E-Trailer has been great! Easy to use website and an awesome customer service staff, makes my job a lot easier.

- UF53-945001
by:

Mixed review, bought two of these, installed them both on my enclosed trailer, to help vent it. One of them stopped working a month later.

- UF53-945001
by:

I put this on my Trailer where i store my scuba equipment, needed to let the moisture out, works great. Will probably order a second one for volume because of the size of the trailer. An added benefit is it functions as a skylight and lets in Light as well.

- UF53-945001
by:

The product works as advertised. Arrived quickly

- UF53-945001
by:

So far so good. We just hope the fan will operate for years to come. Just a little light on the solar panel and the fan starts working. Looks to be very good quality product.

- UF53-945001
by:

The low profile of the vent met my immediate needs. You cannot hear the fan running so unless I climb up on top it's a matter of faith. You cannot turn it off either. While it may be ideal for a backyard shed it's not a real improvement over a standard rv vent. No regrets on buying it but probably wouldn't buy another.

- UF53-945001
by:

Good product, well made. Fired right up when I took it into the sun. I am using mine to keep a outdoor garden railroad engine shed a little cooler. It gets brutally hot in Las Vegas so I am going to paint my unit to UV protect the plastic on the fan housing.

  • Installing Vent in 6x12 Enclosed Cargo Trailer To Keep Interior Cool When in Storage
The # UF53-945001 solar-powered plumbing vent probably won't do what you're looking to achieve. The vent is very low powered, and is designed to provide a small amount of ventilation to draw odors from the stack on a black water tank on an RV. It wouldn't have enough draw to do much to lower the temperature in your trailer. I'd recommend installing a vent cover like # MA00-933066 which is compatible with standard 14 x 14 roof vents. With this in place, you could leave existing roof vent...

  • Does Interior Light Give Enough Power for the Solar-Power Plumbing Vent Fan # UF53-945001 to Run?
The Ultra-Fab Solar-Powered Plumbing Vent # UF53-945001 is a good option for applications needing a small amount of air displacement like RVs or motorhomes. According to my contact at Ultra-Fab, these will only work with sunlight and won't receive power from any type of interior lighting. Unfortunately, we don't have any other solar-powered options that would work for your application. You could use something like the MaxxFan # MA00-03812W, but this would need to be wired to a 12V power...

My recommendation is to use this roof vent and allow your side vents to stay as they are. This fan will allow the hot air that rises to be forced out to cool down your trailer and allow you to draw air through the side vent locations.

I do have an option for you but the only solar powered fan we offer is the Ultra-Fab Solar-Powered Plumbing Vent part # UF53-945001 and this would not move much air in your horse trailer. The same can be said for most solar powered fans of its kind as they are really not designed to move large quantities of air. Therefore, a much better option for you would be to install a few 12 volt powered vent fans. I recommend the MaxxAir Mini Deluxe Trailer Roof Vent part # MA00-03851 or part # MA00-03801...

The air that vents out of the Ultra-Fab Solar-Powered Plumbing Vent # UF53-945001 actually comes out of the sides of the vent and not the top. Basically it comes up the center tube of the vent and the around the edge of the tube and then under the main lid that has the solar panel on it. It's designed like this so that rain won't allow water into the trailer through the vent. I attached a picture that shows where the air comes out. When there isn't sunlight air can still vent out...

If you happened to have a # VP-543SP instead the # UF53-945001 would work as a replacement.
