Protect your investment

If you aren't using a surge protector, you're taking a big risk. While spikes caused by lightning can damage your electrical system and appliances, there are common electrical issues that can be just as dangerous. Choosing a surge protector with advanced features will help you protect your RV.

Smart Surge Protection

Electrical problems are not uncommon at campgrounds, especially ones where wiring was originally installed decades ago. When a campground is full on a hot day and everyone is running their air conditioners, low voltage may cause a brown-out situation and damage your RV appliances. On the flip side, faulty transmission, bad wiring, or spikes caused by other RVers connecting to a shared line can all lead to voltage issues that may not be significant enough to trip a basic surge protector.

Power Watchdog surge protectors with Emergency Power Off are equipped with computers that monitor voltage and disconnect when voltage is at risky levels. Plus, they automatically reconnect power when power returns to normal. This keeps your RV safe from problems caused by low voltage like motors overheating in fans and air conditioners.

In the event of a major spike, you can replace the surge protection module itself rather than the entire unit. The modules are plugged in without soldering, so you don't need to be an expert electrician to make an easy repair. In fact, the only tool you need is a screwdriver.

Information at Hand

The Power WatchDog smartphone app

The Power Watchdog app lets you connect to your surge protector via Bluetooth. You can monitor your energy usage, making it easy to diagnose any ongoing energy issues you may be experiencing. When voltage increases or decreases to risky levels, you will be notified right away. You can also reset your surge protector without stepping outside.

On our camper's maiden voyage, one the first campsites we stayed, the electrical pedestal had bad electricity. It was so bad, my Power Watchdog would not allow power into my camper. On my phone was enough details I could explain the problem to the campsite managers. They called their electrician and he spent a half hour replacing bad parts. When he was finished, he thanked me for letting them know because it could have been damaging every camper who has stayed in that site. I feel very safe knowing Power Watchdog is looking out for us.

One year later it saved us again. Power Watchdog told us there was no ground, we reported it to the manager and was given another site.

What a great product. Can’t say enough good things about it. We opted for the hard wire and it has been fantastic I do recommend you always carry a spare board just in case. Haven’t had to use it, but it is there in case I need it. Thank you.

by:

The Watch Dog is a great surge protector and ems. Installs easily. The toughest part was reconnecting to my distribution panel due to very tight space. Other than that all went well and is working properly. I really like that if I get a surge the Watch Dog will shut down and protect my camper but unlike the Surge Guard I will not have to purchase a new unit, just the circuit board at a much lower price than a whole new unit. Great job Huges Autoformers on the designing of this unit. I only wish I would have gotten this instead of the Surge Guard.

by:

Package came fast unit looks good the 6/4 wire fit, have not completed install waiting on plug going to put pigtail plugs so I can quickly switch if I ever have an issue. didnt want to cut plugs off wired unit as needed different to fit my coach

@Doug We're glad to hear it's working well for you!

Product has protected us from multiple poor power conditions, and even a failed pin in the power cord. Recently traded rigs and installed another in the new unit before taking it off the dealer lot. App provided good information to show park maintenance the failure mode and issue to get to a quick resolution of the problem. Would recommend.

by:

Box and Product was damaged slightly on arrival. Product looks great though and hopefully works.

In Florida for 6 months.Went home for Thanksgiving for 10 days. When we got back electric was off. Had electric to trailer, turned breakers off and on to reset but no luck. The next morning I checked watchdog surge protector on Bluetooth said open neutral push to reset. Electric was back on. We a freezer and refrigerator full of food. What a mess. No one in the park lost electric. Not.sure why this happened

Works as it should. Saved my Rv from electrical damage. Had problems with low voltage in a campground and it shut the power off and with Bluetooth capability was able to see the problem. Voltage meter and Bluetooth within a couple volts.

by:

Love it works great.

by:

I like the idea of interior mounting, not to worry about theft. It works silently and was an easy install.

by:

Great product. So much better witha a hardwired unit. Also the connectivity with the app is great.

Hello
I like that the app allows me
to keep an eye on the voltage of each line coming to my rig along with the amps.
The installation was easy too.

by:

Excellent packaging. All necessary parts included. Easy installation (depending on your situation). Electrical connections couldn’t be easier. I recommend a no-ox type grease to prevent corrosion from moisture and dissimilar metals. Unit worked perfectly. WiFi to phone works great and is very convenient. Mine is mounted in the basement of a 5th wheel so can’t see it readily. Highly recommend the quality device.

by:

So far everything seems to be just as advertised. Install was pretty straight forward. I had to move my transfer box over so I would have room for everything. Product was shipped in a timely manner. I initially tried to purchase from [online store]. They sent me the wrong unit twice. I should have just ordered from etrailer to start with. I also ordered a new 30' cable from them. It came faster than the Watchdog.

I have been using this for a year now with no problems. It let me know at one RV park that the power on one leg was not working. I am happy with my purchase and happy I purchased at Etrailer.

Hi Greg, we're happy to hear that the # HU27FR Power Watchdog surge protector you purchased from us is working well for you!

by:

Bought this and installed on the motorhome to save others from "taking it by mistake". It works seamlessly, and the app lets you monitor everything from your phone. The best part...this saved us from possibly having a major electrical repair bill when it detected some crossed wiring in the campground connection. It would not allow the electrical connection, and the app told what the problem was, allowing the park electrician to make an easy fix by simply switching the crossed wires to their correct positions. This is one item that nobody should ever be without.

by:

Had it about a year and it has done its job as advertised.

by:

So far been very happy with etrailer and surge protector

by:

Easy to install, but it’s a strange feeling cutting the power cord. Lost about 8 inches of total length based on mounting location and strain relievers. Bluetooth is a nice addition. Hope it never triggers, but it’s there if needed.

Michael

8/4/2022

Outstanding! It works as advertised and has alerted me a few times about over voltage. Well worth time money and time to install.

by:

Item has been working flawlessly since installation. I paired it with the RV Whisper monitoring system and now I can monitor electrical status from anywhere I have internet access

by:

I like the lit up dog so you know it has power. Also the phone app is a nice feature.

The Hughes Surge Protector looks to be a well built unit. The one time a storm took our power out, our rv was protected. The only problem is I wish Jayco had left me a little more wire to hard mount it in the storage bay.

by:

Recieved order in 3 days w/std shipping in perfect condition. Can't wait to install for added surge/power protection.

by:

Hard wired into our Class A. Works great

by:

The unit alerted us when my power cord had a bad plug that could have resulted in afire. Also we had a park in CA that could not provide adequate voltage during the heat wave during Labor Day weekend. While this was sometimes inconvenient, it protected my appliances and electronics. I now have an auto former that should help in that situation going forward.

by:

Love the product. After I installed the bulldog I plugged the RV into a circuit from my house and noticed the color was red indicating a problem. I found a bad ground on the outlet and made repairs and plugged it back in and the bulldogs face was white indicating clean power. The app works very well and I can tell exactly how many amps I am drawing either from my on board generator or plugged into a 20, 30 or 50amp service.

  • Can Power Watchdog Surge Protector Be Installed After Transfer Switch
I suppose you can put the Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth and Emergency Shut Down # HU27FR after the transfer switch, but this is really intended to prevent surge damage from the shore power connection to begin with so if you install it after the transfer switch you would risk surge damage to the transfer switch itself and potentially your generator.
