Video Transcript for Review of Furrion RV Solar Panels - Roof Mounted Solar Panel - FR73SR

Michael: Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at the Furrion 165-Watt Solar Panel. This solar panel is going to allow you to camp off the grid longer. It's going to help harness the energy from the sun and convert that to electricity that can be stored in your RV's batteries, so this is going to be a great option for those of you who enjoy boondocking or camping off the grid. This is a really nice panel. It's a monocrystalline construction, so if you're familiar with solar panels, you know there's three different kinds of constructions for solar panels.

The monocrystalline is a really great option. It is superior to the polycrystalline, which is kind of like a fiberboard material. If you think of it that way, it's a lot of different pieces put together. This is one solid piece, so it's going to be a lot more efficient in gathering of that solar energy and converting it to electricity for you. This panel is going to be capable of 165 watts of power. It's going to give you an operating voltage of 18.72 volts and an operating current of 8.82 amps.

It does have a tempered glass construction over top of that monocrystalline panel, so that it's going to be a very durable, impact-resistant, so it will hold up to hail, high winds, and heavy snow. We do have an anodized aluminum frame here. So again, very durable. Helps to make it lightweight and corrosion-resistant so it will hold up well for you.On the back side, we have our junction box, which is going to provide the electrical cables that will then connect to our solar controller, which will connect to our batteries. This junction box does have an IP rating of 65, so it's going to be dust tight, so dust, dirt, and those sort of things aren't going to be able to get in there, and it's also going to be very water-resistant, so even if you we're spraying off your RV with a power washer, you swipe across there, it's not going to hurt it.

It will withstand that, so it's going to hold up well. Again, be very durable. The operating temperatures that this will operate in, it will work in negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. So again, it's a very durable panel. You don't have to worry about it breaking down. It's going to be very reliable for you and help to charge up those batteries. Now keep in mind, this is just the solar panel.

So if you already have a solar setup, this would be a good addition to add onto that, but if you're starting from scratch, you will need a few more components to get this installed and to use it. I've mentioned the solar controller. That's really important. That's kind of the brains of your solar operation. It's going to see how much power is coming in from your solar panel, and then send the power to your batteries depending on how much they need. So that's really a crucial component that is not included with this. This is just the panel itself, so if you're starting from scratch, you'll definitely want to add something like that in place.Another component that is not going to be included in this is your mounting brackets. You can see here, we've got our mounting holes and there's double . or the same kind of spacing on the bottom side there. That's where your mounting brackets will be installed, and then you'll just drill those into your RV's roof so that this will be mounted permanently for you. Those mounting brackets, the screws, all the hardware, as well as your self-leveling sealant to make sure that none of those screw holes leak for you, none of that is included with this kit, so you will have to pick that up separately. We have lots of different options for your self-leveling sealant to help match the color of your RV's roof so it kind of blends in, it's not very noticeable for you. But the mounting brackets are a related product on our product page for our panel here, so you can find those pretty easily to get this installed for you.And as far as picking out the right solar controller, it's really going to depend on how many panels you have, so if you have up to two panels like this that are the 165-watt panel, that will require at least a 300-watt charge controller. If you have up to four panels like this you'll need at least a 600-watt charge controller to make sure that it's going to be able to handle the power that the solar panels are bringing in. And again, making sure that it's controlling how much power is going to your batteries so you don't potentially damage your batteries with too much electricity flowing into them, so that is an important component. But if you already have a whole setup, you're just wanting to add a little bit more, this is going to be a great option for you to get just a little bit more power into your batteries. That's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Ask the Experts about this Furrion RV Solar Panels

  • How to Mount Furrion Solar Panels to RV Roof
I was able to confirm with Furrion that the 165W Solar Panel # FR73SR does not come with mounting hardware included; he also mentioned that they are in the process of re-designing these panels so the brackets they have previously used have been discontinued. With that said, you can use the Replacement Mounting Hardware for Go Power Rigid Solar Panels # 34272708 to mount this panel to your roof and it will work just fine. This kit comes with the Z style brackets that attach to the panel...

  • Can Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger Work With 160 Watt Solar Panel and 120 Watt Solar Blanket
I reached out to Redarc and you will have no issues using both your 120 watt solar blanket and a 160 watt solar panel at the same time with the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Dual Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 40 Amp # 331-BCDC1240D as long as the solar panel and blanket are wired in parallel meaning the both positive wires are connected together, and both negative wires are connected together. The reason for this is the # 331-BCDC1240D will only draw the power that it can take,...
