Video Transcript for Bargman RV Porch or Utility Light Review and Installation

Zack: Hey guys, Zack here at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at an RV porch light from Bargman. Now this also works with utility trailers or enclosed trailers as a utility light. It's going to do a good job of lighting up entrances to our trailers and the area around it. But this one's going to be an incandescent light that is tied in with a switch on the inside of the trailer. You will definitely need a working switch somewhere on your trailer.

I just have it tied in with all the interior lights, but if you're looking for something that you want to be more on its own, we also offer this light with a switch on it. Now this is going to be a great addition to your trailer if you're adding it new or you're replacing an old existing light. The thing with incandescent when you're comparing it with LED is the bulb on the inside here will eventually burn out.The filament is pretty brittle and going down the road, these things tend to burn out pretty quickly. For me, I probably would go with an LED, even though they tend to cost a little bit more. I think that I would rather spend a little bit more upfront and not have to worry about replacing bulbs while I'm on a trip.

If this burnt out, while we're set up at a camping trip and we didn't have a bulb, we would just be without this light. The LEDs also tend to burn a little bit cleaner in my opinion, like a more modern look. We can show you, we have LEDs on the inside of the trailer, you can kind of see the difference there. But these still do a good job they've been around for a while. And I think that if you're looking for a cost-effective way to add a light to the entrance, to your trailer, this is going to do a really good job. Also, when you compare incandescent to LEDs, the incandescent is going to require a little bit more power.

The LEDs won't draw as much so we have this hooked up to 12 volt power here today, and we would run our battery down a little bit quicker than the LED version. And if you have lots of incandescent lights, it's just going to continue to build up the possibility of running your power down quicker. When it comes to how this lights up, you can see it has this nice angle down. It's going to illuminate the area below it. These little reflectors are going to kind of help spread the light out a little bit so it's not such a spotlight down on the area that you have this pointed.

And the housing on here is going to be constructed of an ABS plastic. It's fairly durable.I don't think it would take a hard impact very well. And if you crack these covers here, we have replacements for those as well. And the measurements on this are going to be three and a half by six inches by two and a quarter on the depth at the furthest point. They don't take up a lot of space. And we also have this, not just in the black that we have here, but it also comes with a chrome housing with a clear lens, but then it also has an amber lens cover with a black housing. If you're looking for something to give you some light, but you don't want to attract as many bugs, that's also an option. I took down the lights in the shop. I've got a little bit of light coming in through a window and a light on the front of the trailer that's kind of illuminating the area, but this gives you a good idea. This covers pretty much the entire length of the trailer. It goes out maybe four to six feet from our trailer. It's not the brightest light we've tested out, but it still does a good job of lighting up the entrance to our camper or enclosed trailer. You can see if I open this up, we have LEDs on the inside and you can see those are quite a bit brighter. They are different lights, but the LED just gives a much cleaner look than the incandescent, but this still does a really good job. They're not too difficult to install. We have a light switch already in place in our trailer today. You'll just tie it into that. If you don't have a light switch, you can still get the style that has the switch on it.They're pretty easy to install. Let's just show you how we got this one put in place. To begin our installation I disconnected the battery on my trailer and these wires on the back of my light we're already stripped. I went ahead and stripped the wires that are coming out of my trailer. We are swapping this out for an old light that we had on, very similar style, but we wanted to put one on that had a switch. I'm going to pop this cover off of here and it's on there pretty good. You can definitely get it off, but this one's actually on a lot better than a lot of them, but you'll just pop up from the bottom of the light there. And that's where we'll run our screws to mount this in. But first we need to get this connected to our wires. And I'm going to use butt connectors. You can use non heat shrink because we're putting these into our trailer. But if you want to use heat shrink, those are also acceptable. A lot of times, if these lights come with connectors, they will come with like wire nuts like your house. But I don't think that those are best suited for this application because they may come undone as we're going down the road. I'm going to get these slid in place and get these crimped on, we can get everything put in place. Check to make sure we've got a good hold there. Now I've already tested mine. I know that my black wire coming out of my trailer is my power and the white wire is my ground. I don't need to worry about those. We have this switch on here today. Ours is actually running to a switch on the inside of our trailer so we can have this turned on and off from the inside of our trailer too.But then it's tied into lights on the inside. So if we want to just those lights on, but not this one on the outside, we can always use that switch. We'll just get this tied into the respective color of our power and ground black being power, white being ground. There you go. Now we can get this put in place. Now, a lot of times this style light will have very similar mounting holes. We've already had a couple of different lights on this trailer before. I tested a bunch of them out. I think it's going to line up just fine, but with this, this is aluminum. We didn't need to really put much pressure into it, but we just got a little pilot hole started with a small drill bit, and then we're using some self-tapping like sheet metal screws. And I'm just going to put those in by hand, no need to use any power tools with that. I'll make sure that our wires are lined up in that little recess back in there so we don't smash those up.I'm just going to test to see if those line up with our holes that have already got drilled and they look like they are exactly right. I'm just going to put those screws in place. And this has four mounting holes, two of them though, are quite a bit smaller and we've had good luck with these, just installing with just the two screws. So I'm going to put that in place. You can definitely put all four in though. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think it does just fine with just the two.I actually did go back and put four in there. Because I didn't think that two was holding it in as well as I thought we've done that before, but the four, I just put a screw through there and it widened out that hole just a little bit. So it's holding in there good. We can put this back in place and now I can test this out. I hooked up my battery. I'm going to flip my lights on here because I have that tied into a switch and then I'll just get this one turned on and you can see it's working. That's going to do it for our look at the Bargman incandescent RV porch light or utility light for enclosed trailers.

Easy install and work well, would recommend replacing the bulbs with LED to reduce power draw. Also seal the top and sides when mounting to prevent water egress

This is a good light, was a little hard to get it grounded. I don't think it was worth the extra money and if I had it to do over again I would buy the RVPL1C instead.

- 30-78-522
by:

Unfortunately it's the wrong size. The one I needed replaced is bigger. Looks identical but wrong size.
