Why ThermaHeat?

When the outside temperature is cold enough, the gray water or black water dump valve pipe or elbow on your RV will freeze. This stops you from being able to dump your gray water or black water tank. Furthermore, the frozen water could potentially cause cracks or other irreparable damage, which would mean you would have to replace the pipe.

The full-contact ThermaHeat heater pad will prevent this by keeping your pipe warm during freezing temperatures. It can also completely thaw out a pipe if it's already frozen, assuming that it hasn't been damaged. The heater pad does all the work for you, preventing you from having to go out in the cold and thaw it out by hand with a heat gun or hair dryer, which can melt the side of your pipe if not used properly.

Installation and Wiring

ThermaHeat Peel-and-Stock Installation

This heater pad has easy, peel-and-stick installation. The flexible carbon fiber material is designed to fit the contours of any valve pipe or elbow surface. The pad is meant for use on black water and gray water pipes, but can be installed onto freshwater pipes as well.

ThermaHeat 2-Wire Design

The pad has a white wire for ground, and a red wire for power. This 2-wire design is compatible with DC power while your RV is in transit. It can also run through a converter while connected to a power source when your RV is parked. The pad wires into a wall switch on your RV, letting you turn it on and off as needed.

Additionally, you are able to install this pad with other ThermaHeat heater pads (sold separately). In order to do this, they must be connected and run parallel. You would daisy-chain the red wires together and connect them to the battery of your RV or camper and then daisy-chain the white wires together and ground them. In order to turn the pads on and off, you will need to install a switch (sold separately) between the battery and the pads.

Install 3 holding take heaters, 1 fresh water tank heater and 5 elbow/ pluming heaters on my trailer. All of the heaters running at the same time draws less than 300 watts so I can now leave then on when towing without having to run my propane heater in the trailer. I added R30 insulation to my underbelly and took a trip to Angel Fire NM where one night it got down to -24 degrees F. None of my tanks froze. I had one temperature probes directly on my black water tank and it was 53 degrees with the -24 outside. Every day was below freezing with temps in the lower teens each night. I believe these are rated at -11 but it is a good idea to have an enclosed underbelly to keep the rest of your pluming warm.

- 277-000161

Easy to install and very sticky. Seems like a great value, but I am waiting for cold weather to try them out.

- 277-000161

Can’t wait to try it out in very cold weather. The shipping was quick and the price was good. The product was as described and seem to be well thought out. Now I can be sure of fresh water even in freezing weather and to be able to dump my tanks before I leave the camping site in cold weather.

- 277-000161

Customer service was excellent and my order was delivered on time everything is in working condition I would definitely recommend using etrailer ty

  • Can 8" x 3" Elbow Heater Pad for RVs # 277-000161 Survive with Battery Sitting On Top of It
The 8" x 3" Elbow Heater Pad for RVs # 277-000161 can survive with 30 lb batteries on top of it and would work fine. These were designed to be pretty tough so having a battery sit on top of them would not be a problem at all.

  • Can ThermaHeat RV Dump Valve Pipe and Elbow Heating Pad Have Insulation Over Them?
The ThermaHeat RV Dump Valve Pipe and Elbow Heating Pad - 13" Long x 3" Wide # 277-000161 should not be installed with insulation over it. It is designed and has been tested in a cold room for temperatures as low as -32 degrees and still function correctly. You can use insulation on the areas leading up to the pad, but it shouldn't touch or cover the pad. The pad has an internal thermostat that wouldn't work properly if covered.

  • Troubleshooting Therma Heat Pads that are Not Thawing Out 30 Gallon Tanks
Sorry to hear that your heating pads part # 277-000162 and part # 277-000161 are not working properly. I spoke with my contact at Therma Heat who said that there are a few things that you can do to troubleshoot them. You will want to check the following: Make sure they are getting appropriate voltage supply (13.5V DC) Make sure the polarity of the connections is correct. Make sure the total amp draw on the circuit is appropriate for its’ capacity. Make sure the placement of the pad is...

  • Can I Install Insulation Over the ThermaHeat Heating Pads?
Per the manufacturer, it is recommended to not have any insulation covering the ThermaHeat Pads # 277-000164 as this could cause the internal thermostat controlling the pads to not cycle properly.

  • Is there a Heating Pad for Small Holding Tanks on a Pop-Up Camper
We do have some smaller heater pads such as # 277-000161 at 13 x 3 inches or # 277-000162 at 8 x 3 inches. The larger one draws 0.62 amps at 13.5 volts. The smaller one draws 0.3 amps at 13.5 volts.

  • Heating Pads for Holding Tank and Pump on Class B RV
Since your tank is 26 gallons having only 3/4 of heating pad # 277-000164 on the tank would only cover 21-3/4 gallons. What I purpose instead is to use the whole pad on the tank and use a separate pad, just as # 277-000161 or # 277-000162 for the pump. That way you will get the most out of each heating pad. The paper does have to be removed otherwise something could occur that could potentially burn the paper and that could lead to other issues. But if you go with my plan of using 2 pads...

  • Heating Pads To Keep Black And Gray Waste Valves From Freezing
To keep the valves of your black and gray water tanks you can use a smaller heating pad like the ThermaHeat RV Dump Valve Pipe and Elbow Heating Pad - 13" Long x 3" Wide # 277-000161 or the ThermaHeat RV Dump Valve Pipe and Elbow Heating Pad - 8" Long x 3" Wide # 277-000162. You can wrap these around the pipe close to the valve to keep it from freezing.

  • Is 13 Inch Elbow Heater Pad 277-000161 Big Enough for a 10 Gallon Tank
Since a 10 gallon tank is not very large the 13 inch elbow heater pad # 277-000161 could be sufficient. Although if the tanks are all right next to each other you might be able to use a total of 2 of the 25 inch by 7-1/4 inch heaters # 277-000163. Two of the 25 inch models will draw about 11.6 amps at 13.5 volts compared to 2-1/2 amps from 4 of # 277-000161. In short the 25 inch models are larger and draw more power and thus should also provide more heat when properly installed.

An elbow heater pad is not designed to be used with tanks it fits on pipes. For example the 13" x 3" Elbow Heater Pad for RVs # 277-000161 is designed to be used on 3 inch pipes while the 8" x 3" Elbow Heater Pad for RVs # 277-000162 is designed for use with 1-1/2 inch pipe. For your 40-gallon RV holding tank I highly recommend the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank Heater Pad w/ Thermostat # 277-000163. You can use the ThermaHeat Elbow Heating Pad # 277-000161 as well, but this is a pad for 3 inch pipes so you will want to put it there as opposed to your tank. • Can Holding Heat Tank Pads and Elbow Heat Pads Run on Different Switch
Yes, since the holding tank pads operate on a thermostat and turn on automatically, a different switch makes sense with the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank or Step Heater Pad with Thermostat # 277-000164 and Elbow Heating Pad # 277-000161.
