  • Safety for Electric Heating Appliances, UL499
  • Safety for Heating Elements (CSA) C22.2 No. 72-m1984 (R2004)
  • Flammability tests (UL) 746C, 15 and CSA 0.17,9,2
  • Dieletric Voltage Withstand Test (UL) - 1000 volts/1 minute
  • Thermal Aging Test (UL)

Note: This heater pad should be installed on non-conductive surfaces only.

Why ThermaHeat?

When the outside temperature is cold enough, the exposed freshwater holding tank or step on your RV will freeze. For tanks, this stops the flow of water from reaching your sink, shower, or other freshwater source. Furthermore, the frozen water could potentially cause cracks or other irreparable damage to your tank or pipes, which would mean you would have to replace them. And a frozen step can be extremely slippery as you try to enter or exit your RV or camper.

The full-contact ThermaHeat heater pad will prevent this by keeping your holding tank or step warm during freezing temperatures. It has a built-in thermostat that automatically operates the pad. When the temperature of the tank or step drops to 45 degrees F, the pad will turn on. When the temperature rises to 67 degrees F, the pad will turn off. It can also completely thaw out a tank or a step if it's already frozen, assuming that none of the components have been damaged. The heater pad does all the work for you, preventing you from having to go out in the cold and thaw it out by hand with a heat gun or hair dryer, which can melt the side of your tank or step if not used properly.

Installation and Wiring

ThermaHeat Peel-and-Stock Installation

This heater pad has easy, peel-and-stick installation onto the bottom of your tank or step. The flexible carbon fiber material is designed to fit the contours of any surface. The pad is meant for use on fresh water tanks, but can be installed onto gray water or black water tanks. Please note, however, that adding a heat source to a gray water or black water tank may create excess gasses and odors.

ThermaHeat 2-Wire Design

The pad has a red wire for ground, and a white wire for power. This 2-wire design is compatible with DC power while your RV is in transit. It can also run through a converter while connected to a power source when your RV is parked.

Additionally, you are able to install this pad with other ThermaHeat heater pads (sold separately). In order to do this, they must be connected and run parallel. You would daisy-chain the red wires together and connect them to the battery of your RV or camper and then daisy-chain the white wires together and ground them. In order to turn the pads on and off, you will need to install a switch (sold separately) between the battery and the pads.

Video Transcript for Therma Heat RV Fresh Water 277-000164 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the holding tank heater pad for RVs. Now this is a full contact, peel and stick, carbon fiber heater pad for 29 to 40 gallon RV tanks. It's designed to keep the water in your freshwater tank from freezing, and it is capable of even thawing out a frozen system. Installation instructions are located directly on the pad, right here on the sticker. And it is thermostat-controlled with a built-in thermostat. So it has auto-on feature at 45 degrees Fahrenheit and auto-off at 67 degrees Fahrenheit. The thermostat in the pad reads the tank's surface temperature and not the outside temperature to determine when to turn off and when to turn on.

It has been cold-room tested down to negative 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It runs off of DC power, while the RV is in transit, and through a converter when connected to a power source. It has a two-wire design, so your white wire is ground, red wire is power. These are 16-gauge wires. Now, if two or more pads are used, they must be connected and parallel. I also want to let you know that a switch can be used to turn off and on the heating pad, as long as the switch can handle the amperage load of the heating pads.

Switches are sold separately and available at etro.com 00:01:18.When it comes to the size of the pad, we're only looking at a thickness of three millimeters going this direction. The pad measures about 12 inches, and then going this direction, it measures about 18 inches long. When it comes to the voltage, we're looking at 13.5 volts, electric currant is 4.8 amps, and your lead wires have a length of around 36 inches. That's going to do it for today's look at the holding tank heater pad for RVs.

Ask the Experts about this LaSalle Bristol RV Fresh Water
Do you have a question about this RV Fresh Water?

  • Installing Therma Heat Holding Tank Heater Pads with Switch
  • The Therma Heat Holding Tank Heater Pad # 277-000164 referenced in your question is a very nice, full contact peel and stick heater pad designed for RV tanks between 29 and 40 gallons. These are designed for fresh water tanks and typically will not be needed for grey water. You can then use a switch like the Pollak Universal-Design Rocker Switch # PK34310, which is indeed rated for 20 amps.

  • Keeping Fresh Water Tank and Lines from Freezing in a Lived-In 5th Wheel Trailer
  • If you live in the trailer all year then presumably you will be running heaters when it is cold. Provided the hot water heater and plumbing is internal to the trailer then the ambient temperature would prevent it from freezing. But I assume that the water heater is fed from the fresh water tank which is more external to the trailer. To keep it from freezing you could use a tank heater such as # 277-000164. Or we have heating element # W01-1573 designed for freeze protection on holding...

  • How to Wire the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank Heater Pad To an On/Off Switch
  • There are two wires coming from the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank Heater Pad part # 277-000164. There is a red wire for the 12 volt power and a white wire for the ground. This heating pad draw's 4.8 amps of power. Therefore, if you will be attaching three of these to a single switch then the switch will need to be rated for 14.1 amps (4.8 x 3). For a switch, I recommend using the Universal-Design Rocker Switch part # PK34360 which is rated at 20 amps and will be sufficient for three of...

  • Heating Pad for Freshwater Tank on RV
  • For as big as your tanks are I would recommend going with the part # 277-000163 which measures 25 inches by 7-1/2 inches for each of your tanks. These are designed for the freshwater tanks and would not be needed on grey water.

  • Can Holding Tank Heater Pad such as # 277-000164 be Used on Gray or Black Water Tanks
  • There's nothing stopping you from using a Holding Tank Heater Pad such as # 277-000164 on black or gray water tanks. It wouldn't get hot enough to really cause an issue.

  • Therma Heat RV Tank Heater Pads Installation
  • To install the Tank Heater Pads part # 277-000164, part # 277-000161, and part # 277-000162 together you will simply need to run them in parallel. This means that you will daisy-chain all of the positive (Red) wires together and connect them to the battery on your RV, and you will daisy-chain all of the negative (White) wires together and ground them. You can use the Pollak Universal-Design Rocker Switch # PK34310 between the battery and the pads as a way to turn them on and off. Since...

  • Could Switch be Used to Power Two of the 18-1/4" x 12" Holding Tank Heater Pad 277-000164
  • As long as the switch can handle the amperage load of two of the heating pads part # 277-000164 yes it would be fine. This heating pad draws 4.8 amps. So the switch would need to be able to accommodate 9.6 amps. The part # D16740 would easily handle the amperage.

  • Will Therma Heat RV Holding Tank Heater Pad Work with 12V Battery Operating Between 11-13.5 Volts
  • I spoke with my contact at Therma Heat regarding the RV Holding Tank Heater Pad # 277-000164 referenced in your question. She stated that the pads will work just fine with your 12V RV battery that operates between 11 and 13.5 volts. You will not have any issues. This full-contact heater pad will keep your RV holding tank warm and prevent freezing. It is also capable of thawing out a tank system if it is already frozen. I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that...

  • How to Check for Proper Operation of ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank Heating Pads
  • RV holding tank heating pads like # 277-000164 and # 277-000163 operate on an automatic thermostat. The pads will automatically turn on at 45-degrees Fahrenheit and turn off at 67-degrees Fahrenheit. If you are nearby to the RV when the tanks are in a sub-45-degree environment you should be able to feel warmth from the pad if it is cycled on. I confirmed with LaSalle-Bristol, the manufacturer of ThermaHeat pads, that the thermostats in these pads read the tank surface temperature and...

  • Will 18-1/4" x 12" Holding Tank Heater Pad # 277-000164 Work on 30 Gallon Freshwater Tank
  • The 18-1/4" x 12" Holding Tank Heater Pad # 277-000164 that you referenced would work well for your 30 gallon fresh water tank as it is designed for 29-40 gallon tanks. The heater is powerful enough that it would not need to make contact with the entire bottom of the tank. It would generate enough heat with it's pad size of 18-1/4 inch by 12 inch size to keep it warm. The pad runs off of DC power (what a vehicle runs off of) so you would need to either use a converter to adapt AC...

  • The Therma Heat 18-1/4 Inch x 12 Inch Holding Tank Heater Pad # 277-000164 referenced in your question is typically used on freshwater tanks but can certainly be used on black and gray tanks as well. There is nothing in the product's design itself that would prevent you from doing this. • Is 13 Inch Elbow Heater Pad 277-000161 Big Enough for a 10 Gallon Tank
  • Since a 10 gallon tank is not very large the 13 inch elbow heater pad # 277-000161 could be sufficient. Although if the tanks are all right next to each other you might be able to use a total of 2 of the 25 inch by 7-1/4 inch heaters # 277-000163. Two of the 25 inch models will draw about 11.6 amps at 13.5 volts compared to 2-1/2 amps from 4 of # 277-000161. In short the 25 inch models are larger and draw more power and thus should also provide more heat when properly installed.
