GasStop ACME vs POL Graphic

Notes:

  • These valves are only meant to be used on travel trailers and fifth wheels that have the ACME connection fitting. Please see the graphic above to double check what type of valve you need.
  • Adapter fittings (sold separately) may be required to connect your hoses to your propane system's regulator.

You're headed to the next campsite, and in the chaos of packing up, you forgot to turn off your propane system. While on the road, someone rear ends you, causing a propane line to come loose, and you now run the risk of a fire breaking out on your RV. It's a dreaded situation that no one wants to suffer through.

Unlike EFVs and other built-in limiters that just reduce the flow of gas, GasStop shut-off safety valves immediately and completely shut off your gas supply when they detect either a major leak in your dual-tank propane system or major failure of your regulator. This protects both your family and your travel trailer or fifth wheel, ensuring that your camping trip remains safe, fun, and worry-free. And while these safety valves will shut off for major leaks such as a large break in a hose, they won't shut off for small leaks that result from your regulator's small housing failure or clogged chambers. This means that your furnace or heater won't go out in the middle of the night while camping in the frigid mountains over a small, less dangerous leak.

Automatic Changeover Regular for Dual-Tank Systems

JR Products Automatic Changeover Regulator

For you dual-tank propane system, this changeover regulator will automatically redirect the gas flow from the empty tank to the full one. This will eliminate any interruptions in the flow to prevent your water heater from shutting off on a cold morning or your stove shutting off when you're in the middle of cooking dinner. The color-coded indicator will change from green to red, alerting you that the tank needs to be refilled.

And when you add safety valves to both tanks, you'll still be protected from gas leaks even if one tank empties in the middle of the night and the regulator kicks over to the other tank. You won't have to manually move the valves over to the other tank in the morning as you would if you had just 1 valve.

Stainless Steel Hoses Have 90-Degree Fittings

GasStop Stainless Steel Hose

If your dual-tank propane setup is in a particularly small or cramped compartment, the 90-degree ACME connections on these hoses make it quick and easy to hook up to your tanks. This helps prevent the hoses from bunching and puts less strain on them, which means they'll last longer. And you can put a cover over your propane tanks without the hoses snagging the fabric or stop it from fitting over the tanks altogether.

The braided stainless steel hoses won't crack or tear as easily as traditional rubber hoses, which get stiff after a period of time due to daily wear and tear. The hoses are also corrosion-resistant, so they can withstand the elements much better than rubber hoses.

Using the Pressure Gauges to Test for Minor Leaks

GasStop Safety Valve Testing for Minor Leaks

The integrated pressure gauges provide a clear and easy way to tell what your propane tanks' gas pressure is while the gas is being used. If it's on "high", there's been an increase in gas pressure, most likely due to excessive heat, and you'll have to cool the tanks down. If it's on "gas", then you'll know you still have plenty of usable gas left. And if it's on "low", then it's time to switch out your tanks. The gauges are also rotatable, so they can be used from any angle, though it is recommended to keep them no lower than 45 degrees from the sky.

The gauges can also be used to test for minor leaks. Once the GasStop safety valves has been installed and the gas appliances have been turned off, push down on the gauges 4 to 6 times to see what the gas pressure is. If the needles are below the red bar on the gauges, then one or more of the following is the cause: the cylinder valves aren't open, the GasStop safety valves have shut off, you have run out of gas, you haven't pushed the gauges the appropriate number of times, or the temperature is around freezing.

If the needles are above the red bar, note the exact position before turning off the valves on your propane tanks. Wait 60 seconds for standard applications and 5 minutes for longer RV gas systems. If the needles are in the same position, you can continue to use your propane system. If the needles dropped during that time, there is a leak somewhere. You shouldn't use your propane system until that leak has been found and repaired.

Installing the Safety Valves

GasStop Safety Valve Installation

These GasStop safety valves are extremely simple to install. Once your tank-propane system and all of your gas appliances have been shut off, tighten the GasStop safety valves onto your propane tanks. The re-attached your regulator and install the hoses before checking for any leaks in your propane system. To allow the gas to flow, push down on the gauge faces 4-6 times.

Video Transcript for Review of GasStop Propane Fittings - Shut-Off Gauges with Automatic Changeover Regulator - GS69FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this gas stop emergency propane shutoff set. This set is going to feature two of these emergency propane shutoff gauges, the two 18 inch hoses, and this automatic changeover regulator. So this set is going to help protect your family against major propane leaks and regulator failure. And these shutoff gauges are going to immediately cut off the supply of your propane if there's a leak or a regulator failure detected. And so all your other propane accessories or devices like your hoses, your tank itself, they have built in safety features to help to reduce the amount of propane if it detects a leak, this system is the only one that's going to shut it off completely.

So 100% of the flow is gonna be cut off, so you're not gonna have to worry if there's a fire or something along those lines. You're not gonna have propane continuing to feed it. So this is gonna be a really nice safety feature for you. These do have the type one ACME fitting so these are gonna be compatible with your travel trailers and fifth wheels only. There is a POL connection for your class A and class C motor homes, that is sold separately.

That is obviously a different kind of connection so you wanna make sure you're getting the right one for your setup. This is gonna work for your travel trailers and fifth wheels that use that ACME connection. These do have a brass and reinforced polycarbonate construction, so they are gonna be corrosion resistant and hold up really well for you. On the top here, we do have this rotating pressure gauge that's going to allow you to very easily see if your tanks have high pressure, sufficient gas, or if they're getting near to empty. If you we're to experience a leak, it's gonna shut off that flow.

And then to reset it, you just have to push down on that four to six times and that will reactivate it and allow the propane to flow through again. So you're gonna get two of those emergency cutoff gauges or shutoff gauges. And then you're also gonna get this automatic changeover regulator that's going to automatically redirect your gas flow from an empty tank to your full tank. So as long as you've got one full tank, this will switch over for you. It's going to eliminate the interruption of the gas flow to help prevent appliances from shutting off.

So if it's a cold evening, you're using your furnace, you won't have to worry about it going off and then having to get out of bed and going, manually moving your valve from one tank to another, it's gonna automatically do that for you. This is also going to have a feature that will alert you when the tank is empty by changing the indicator's color from green to red. And so it will let you know when you do have an empty tank. This does have a maximum flow capacity of 345,000 BTU. Very simple to get this all installed on your setup. So we've got that ACME fitting on our valves there that we'll plug in. And then we've got our 18 inch long gas gear braided stainless steel pigtail hoses. And these actually have a 90 degree angle on them because you are gonna be adding an extra component in there. It's going to add approximately three inches for you. So if you already have a tight setup this is going to give you a nice 90 degree angle instead of having to bend your hose back. So this will let you easily connect your propane tanks in a small or cramped space. So, will allow you to place covers over your propane tanks without the hose snagging the cover. And because this does have that stainless steel braided connect construction, it's not going to stiffen or crack like your rubber hoses. We've got the type one ACME cylinder connection there and then a quarter inch male inverted flare fitting on that other end will allow this to fit right into our regulator. We can get that tightened down in place, so that we can get that propane flowing through. The regulator is gonna have that quarter inch female inverted flare, and then we've got a three eighths inch FPT fitting down there so that you can get this hooked up to the rest of your system. So a really nice set here. It is going to meet the federal requirements. The valves and the hoses are UL and CSA approved, and the regulator is UL 144 approved. So they're gonna hold up well, do a really good job for you. Obviously propane is one of those things you don't want to mess around with, take any chances with. So this is gonna be a quality setup for you to give you some peace of mind, knowing not only that your propane is going to switch from an empty tank to your full tank without you having to worry about it, but it's also gonna shut off that propane if there we're to have any leaks or something like that. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

  • Why Would Gas Be Coming Out of Long Disconnected Propane Hose
It sounds like you have a bad regulator. These do have a lifespan of about 5 - 10 years so if yours is in that age range it isn't as surprising that it would give out like that. If you had the regulator switched to your 20-lb tank and it switched over to the open-ended hose then that's why I believe the regulator is bad. There are 2 options I recommend choosing from to replace your regulator; the JR Products Automatic Changeover 2-Stage Propane Regulator # 37207-30395 or the GasStop Emergency...

  • Can Both Tanks Be Opened on a Dual Propane Tank RV Setup
Thanks for reaching out! While we don't carry that specific brand, there are some common operations between dual two-stage regulators so I'll be able to shed some light onto the subject for you. When using a two-propane tank setup you'll only be pulling propane from one tank at a time. You can keep both tanks opened up so the regulator can seamlessly switch over to the full one (if you have an auto change regulator) but your regulator should not be pulling from both tanks - if it is then...
