Video Transcript for Bestop TrekStep Truck Bumper Step Installation - 2016 Ford F-150

Today on our 2016 Ford F-150, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Bestop TrekStep Truck Bumper Step, part number B7530815. We've all been in that situation where we have our tailgate down, and we need to get in the back of our truck. Well, with the tailgate down, we no longer have the bumper as an option for a step, but that's where our truck step's going to come in. It's a spring-loaded step, so you made it a lot easier, allowing us to step up and grab the gear that we need out of our truck bed without having to strain. The thing I really like about this step is that you can use with the tailgate up or down, and instead of being a hitch-mounted step, it's going to leave our hitch open for plenty of other accessories. When we're not using it, our step's going to sit up nicely close to our bumper, and whenever we're ready to use it, there's just enough room to get our foot in there and bring it down. The mounting bracket and the linkage on our step are made of a high strength aluminum alloy, and they have a powder coat finish to resist rust and corrosion. Our stepping platform is also made out of aluminum with a nice rugged texture so we know we're going to have a secure footing whenever we're ready. Our step is going to be about 11 and 1/2" wide, by 6 and 1/2" deep.

Our step is going to feature a 300 pound weight capacity, and there's no drilling required. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show how we installed it. To begin our installation, we're going to need to find the bumper mounting point on the back of our vehicle. Now we're going to be mounting our step on the driver side, so we're going to be finding the three bolts that are attaching our bumper on the left side. At the very edge of our frame here, we're going to have three bolts and nuts securing it in place. Now I'm going to be using a 21mm socket to remove the nuts.

We're going to repeat that for the other remaining nuts. Now that we have the nuts removed, you can see that there's quite a bit of tension holding those studs in place. I'm going to take a hammer and just gently tap on there, and it should release the clips of the little washers that are holding the bracket behind here in place. Now that we have them knocked loose, I'm going to push the bracket backwards, then we can pull it out. We're going to start assembling our linkage and our mounting bracket outside the truck. Now at the top of our linkage, we're going to have three threaded holes, and that's where we're going to be mounting our mounting bracket. Now at the top of our mounting bracket, we make sure that the angle is going up and away, and the linkage, you want the step to be coming towards you, so it should attach like this.

We're going to line up the three holes on the top of our mounting bracket with the three holes on the bottom of our linkage here. Now before we attach our mounting bracket to our linkage, I do want to bring up the fact that our kit does come with some spacers, which is going to be nice because if the step is too close to the bumper to where we can't engage it to bring it down, or if it's just making contact, we do have the option to put one or two spacers in, and if we do that's going to change the hardware we're going to use. It's still going to be the same size bolt, it's going to be an M10 bolt, but if we're using one or both of the spacers, we're going to be using the longer of the two M10 bolts. If we're not using the spacers at all, then we're going to use the shorter of the two M10 bolts. We can take our spacer plate, and I'm going to set it underneath my mounting bracket, then I want to take my M10 washers, I'm going to slide them over my M10 bolts, then I'm going to slide them down through my bracket and line up the holes on my plate underneath. That way, it's going all the way through. Once we have both of these in place, you can line up the holes and thread them in by hand for right now. For the small hole farthest away from our bolts that we just put in, we're going to take our M6 cap screw, and we're going to take an M6 flat washer, slide it over the bolt, and I can thread this in about hand-tight for now. For my M10 bolts, I'm going to come back using the 16mm socket and snug these up.

For my M6 cap screw, I'm going to come back and using the 3/16ths Allen, I'm going to tighten it up. Now we're going to get ready to put our step in place. Before we do, we're going to get our hardware ready. We're going to take our long M14 bolts, I'm going to take an M14 flat washer and slide it through. We're going to do that for two of the bolts, and those two bolts are going to be going to the two top locations that we originally took out. We're can take our step and mounting bracket, line it up with the holes, then we slide our hardware through. Once we have our hardware through, we're going to come to the backside and we're going to attach it using an M14 flat washer, followed by an M14 nylon nut. I'm going to get the nuts and bolts hand-tight for right now. Since our vehicle has a factory hitch, we did have that third stud coming through, so we're going to take our M14 flange bolt, and that's going to be the one that has a shoulder on it, and it's rather short compared to the other two as well. We're going to slide that in through the bottom hole, and then on the backside again, we're going to follow with an M14 flat washer and a nylon nut. For our bottom flange bolt, I'm going to be using a 19mm socket, and a 22mm wrench to hold the nut on the backside so I can tighten it up. For my two bolts mounting my step to the truck, I'm going to be using a 21mm socket and again, a 22mm wrench to hold the nut on the backside to tighten it up. We're going to repeat that for the other remaining bolt as well. We can go ahead and grab the step itself now, and get ready to attach it. To make it a little bit easier on yourself, you might want to extend the step out, and if we pay attention to our step itself, we'll notice that there's a sliding silver piece that has two threaded holes in it. If we look on top of our step here, there's going be a channel where it's going to fit right into. I'm going to take my step, I'm going to line up that silver piece in that channel; this is going to allow me to adjust my step to exactly where I'd like it to be. We can take our M6 cap screws, I'm going to come from the bottom going up, and line up the holes; then I can start threading it into place. I'm only going to get a few threads in, hand-tight for now, make sure everything's adjusted the way I like it. We're going to adjust where we want to sit our step before we tighten everything down. I'm going to line mine up pretty close with the edge of the bumper here; that way it's not sticking out past the edge of my truck. I'm going to come back with a 3/16ths Allen socket, and I'm going to tighten up those bolts. That'll finish up our installation. We're ready to hit the road. And that'll finish up our look at the Bestop TrekStep Truck Bumper Step, part number B7530815, on our 2016 Ford F-150.

Use your foot to lower this spring-loaded step from beneath your vehicle's rear bumper to easily access gear in the bed. The step bolts on without drilling, retracts under your truck for storage and works with your tailgate open or closed.

I had a Bestop TrekStep Truck Bumper Step on my previous pickup truck and immediately after I purchased my current truck approximately one year ago, I ordered one for it. It makes getting into the truck bed much easier. I highly recommend this product. 576048

Absolutely excellent experience. The packaging protected all of the parts well and the instructions were simple. Best of all, the holes matched up perfectly so the installation was a breeze. I did it on my back in the garage by myself and it took about 45 minutes. No more kneeling on the tailgate and climbing in to the truck bed. Love it. 566268

Im pretty rough on my pickup since I spend a lot of time in the back country of Colorado hunting and fishing. I even bent my side step rails driving over rocks but the step rail is high enough where it remained undamaged and still works fine.

Ordered step for a F150. Received step for F250. Didn't fit. Spoke with reps at etrailer about situation. They shipped me the correct step and I shipped wrong one back at their cost. Great customer service and quick solutions. Have used the step many times already and haven't regretted the purchase. Thanks. 447579

The Bestop Trekstep was easy install. I'm 65 and did it in half an hour. The step easily flips down and back up with my foot and cuts the stretch up to the tailgate in half. Very solid feel to it. No flex I can detect at all. Very substantial fastening system to the truck. 389375

A well made unobtrusive way to access the bed. I'm no spring chicken anymore so this makes things easier. After you look at the directions, watch the video. 586405

The BESTOP TREK STEP is a great addition to any pick up or SUV. I traded in a 2013 Ford Pick up with the built in tailgate step. Traded it in on a new 2019 Ford but it did not have the tail gate step. The BESTOP TREK STEP was the perfect solution. Easy to install and I actually like it better than the built in Ford tail gate step because I can use it with the tail gate up. The workmanship is excellent and it appears to be well built. 680337

Step has proven worthwhile to get into the bed of the truck. The only drawback is when it is in the up position the entire step and bracket is visible, a distraction from the looks of the truck. 619684

Good product, but...…..installation instructions could be better. Some of the installation hardware was not included in the package (two metric bolts that I needed to attach the linkage to the mounting bracket were not included, although they were supposed to be in the parts package as shown in the installation instructions). 616379

Very rugged design, gives you the ability to easily change the step lateral movement relative to back of bumper (left or right) by a few inches based on preference. Installation claimed 1/2 hour install. Directions don't make sense unless you are under bumper and looking at vehicle and photos of installation at same time. Tools list claimed only needed allen wrench and 17 or 18 mm wrench. This is not correct. the installation hardware required two different size wrenches... IE I used 21mm, 18mm and the existing hardware on truck was I believe 17mm. 586557

I really liked how well this was made. The fit was perfect. The only downside for me is that it doesn't retract enough so that it is less visible. 570122

My "old man" step is EXCELLENT! The product was delivered quickly as promised. Ian W. in customer service pushed all of the right buttons for an excellent customer experience. When installed the step filled a need exactly as I had desired. My only negative comment involves the written directions for installation. If I hadn't previously watched the etrailer product review video for the step installation I would have been totally frustrated by the paper instructions. Bestop needs to step up there game relative to writing instructions. Also verify wrench sizes. At one point it called for a 17mm socket for tightening the large bolts, when in fact 17mm was to large and a 16mm was the right fit. I would highly recommend the product and etrailer as a supplier. Very satisfied with my decision to go in that direction to solve my problem. 563138

The step arrived quickly and in good shape. It fit my 2015 F-150 perfectly, I had all the parts I needed and none I didn’t. It seems to be made with good quality, heavy duty material I used a deep 21mm socket to get the old nuts off, but the bracket was too thick to allow the deep socket to be used on the new bolts. A crescent wrench worked just fine. I used one spacer to allow a little more clearance at the bumper. This will be a great help for my short wife! 562922

Installation was basic and the function seems great so far. It goes up and down smoothly but we will see how the road salt of Michigan winters affects that over time. 529267

I just put it on yesterday been in the bed 3 times, very nice I’m in my70s and 5’4” so this is nice. Easy install took me by myself about 45 min and that’s with an adjustable wrench because I didn’t have a 1” socket. We will see how it holds up. 521065

This is a quality product. It is solidly manufactured and functions exactly as it should. Install was fairly easy except for one minor flaw which is the reason I only gave four stars. I can now get into the bed of my truck with the flick of a foot instead of jumping on the tailgate and rolling in. The kit comes with spacers to allow you to adjust how far you want the step from the bumper. The problem is if you don’t want to use the spacers the cap screw threads are too short and the screw will not seat. This is a problem that hasn’t been addressed as I read other reviews that mentioned it and my truck is a 2018. I solved the issue by using one of the spacers and adding an extra washer which allowed the screw to be tightened. 518044

Great add to any truck... bought this for a 2017 F150 Super Crew and it fits perfect. Very easy to install (providing you have all the right tools) still easy to do. Takes 30-45mins again provinding you have ALL the right tools, Lol.... may end up getting one for the other side of the bumper. 508911
