What is a Coaxial Speaker?

A coaxial speaker consists of a large main speaker (woofer) that reproduces bass sounds, and a separate small speaker (tweeter) that mounts above the woofer and reproduces high frequency sounds. Unlike dual-cone speakers that only use one driver to push sound through two attached cones (woofer and tweeter), a coaxial speaker has separate drivers for the woofer and tweeter along with a built-in crossover to control the frequencies sent to each speaker. This reduces distortion and allows for crisper, more articulate sound over dual-cone speakers.

How to Properly Measure for Cut-Out Dimension

There are two main dimensions you need to know when choosing a replacement speaker or adding a new speaker or speakers to your audio setup:

Cut-Out Diameter

Cut-Out Diameter

The cut-out diameter is the width of the circle needed to ensure the speaker mounts flush to the wall or ceiling.

Mounting Depth

Mounting Depth

The mounting depth is the depth needed behind the mounting surface for the speaker's frame and magnet structure to fit.

Video Transcript for Jensen Recessed Mount Marine Speakers Review

What's up everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out this Jensen marine speakers. They're gonna be 75 watts, coaxial. They're really loud. Let's check 'em out. I've tested the sound.

It gets pretty loud. Our receiver here goes up to 45. It's our order meter set, so I can get up to 30, and it gets pretty loud. We went up to 45, and it got even louder, so I know you can hear it from all around life but I'm gonna try my best to show you how it sounds. So I'm gonna walk away from the boat and see if we'll still hear it up there by the shed.

We'll check it out. With the music playing at 35, I could hear it about 20 yards away from the boat up here in the hill. So if I was getting stuff out of the shed, more tubes for everybody to play in, or if I was out in the water anywhere in that vicinity of the boat I'd be able to hear it just fine. There a few different styles of speakers. You have the full range, which are ones that usually come with your boat, and there is also the dual cone model, and that's gonna have the tweeters and subs separated, but they run through the same channel.

so it's sending the same signal to both of those cones. And then you have the coaxial is what we have today. Coaxial has the better sound of those other two because it has separate signals to the sub woofer and the tweeter so they don't get mixed together. They have separate channels, and it really comes out nicely like the bass really sounds good separately from the tweeter, and it hits those high notes really well. These speakers come in a quantity of two, so if you need more than that, you'll have to get another kit of 'em.

Now they do have the gray exterior grill built onto it, so you won't be able to put another grill on top of that, but it still looks nice and sturdy the way it is. Overall dimensions of the speaker are gonna be seven and one eighth of an inch diameter. It's gonna be three inches deep. The reason why I told you the depth is because it's the backside of the speaker, so depending on where you're gonna put it this is where we really store all the life jackets. It's usually jam packed in here, so we wanna make sure there's space for that. But since they're a soft item, it's not anything. It can always make room when you push that speaker through so it's not gonna bother anything. These speakers have been salt spray tested, so you don't have to worry about if you we're on saltwater. It's not gonna bother 'em. And they've also been tested against UV rays, so even if it is exposed to sunlight, it's not gonna bother or degrade over time. We've checked out how it sounds. How hard are they to install They're not too bad. You just gotta connect two wires and run some screws in to replace the existing speakers that you had. Now it doesn't come with its own hardware, so you either have to use the hardware from the last speaker you removed or just get some of your own to drill in there and secure that speaker, but check out how I did it. We got the cutout here from the old speaker that we're replacing. It's gonna fit in there just fine. We don't have to modify that at all. So we got the two speaker wires here. Make sure you look at 'em. They're usually labeled. In our instance here, the copper one is our positive, and the silver one is gonna be our negative. Also says on the back of the speaker which one's positive and negative. This one's marked with red, so that's positive. So the copper's gonna go there, and the silver will go on the other one. Line up one of the holes here. Now we're not permanently mounting the speaker. So you can see the Jensen logo is not gonna be at the bottom. I'm just gonna line up one of the screw holes the best I can. Secure the speaker so then we can just check out the sound. Now since we tested it all around the boat, what's it sound like when the engine's running So we're gonna go take it out on the lake and test it out. We're going out to this part of the lake. We're gonna actually go a little bit faster. Right now, the motor's running. It's not too bad. I'm turning it up with my phone. The radio's plenty loud. I can hear it just fine. Let's see how it gets when we fire up that motor. Now it's going a lot faster. I can't really hear the engine. The speaker's getting louder. So that's what it's all about. I'm happy with that. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out. I hope this helps!.
