Cinch-Lock Technology

Cinch-Lock clamp features

No more fighting with too-tight, spring-loaded cable clamps. The Hopkins Cinch-Lock clamps ratchet in place on the battery posts for a secure grip that is simple to obtain. Just squeeze the rubber-coated, non-slip grips, and the clamps will ratchet down until they can ratchet no more, at which point they effectively lock in place. To unlock, just push the convenient easy-release button at the base of the grips, and the ratchet will give for quick, effortless removal.


These unique Cinch-Lock clamps are constructed of premium, zinc-plated steel that can withstand more than 200 lbs of bite force and provide 250 percent more clamping force than the competition.


How to Jump-Start Your Vehicle's Battery:

Before jump-starting your vehicle, check the dead battery to make sure that it isn't cracked or frozen. If it is, do not attempt a jump-start. If there is no obvious damage to the battery, continue with the following:


  1. Turn off the vehicle that is providing the jump. Unplug all accessories from both vehicles. This will ensure that no devices are damaged if a short occurs.
  2. Clean off any corrosion around the battery terminals so that the maximum amount of current can travel through them.
  3. Connect one of the orange, positive cable clamps to the positive terminal on the dead battery.
  4. Connect the other orange clamp to the positive terminal on the good battery.
  5. Connect one of the black, negative cable clamps to the negative terminal on the good battery.
  6. Ground the other black clamp on the the vehicle in need of a jump - attach it to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the engine block or frame. Do not attach the negative clamp to the negative terminal of the dead battery.
  7. Start the vehicle that is providing the jump and let it run for a few minutes.
  8. Try to start the dead vehicle. If the engine does not turn over, rev the engine of the good vehicle to boost power output.
  9. Remove the clamps in the reverse of the order in which you attached them, being careful not to touch the clamps together as you do so: Disconnect the negative from the engine block or frame, then the negative from the good battery. Disconnect the positive from the good battery, then the other positive from the bad battery.

Today we're going to review part number HMBC0860. This is the Hopkins super duty jumper cables. First thing we'll take a look at is the clamps on our cables. We've got 2 different colors. Orange for our positive, it also has a marking on there. Black for negative, also a marking for that as well.

These have a ratchet built in to the inside here so when you clamp down on them, they stay shut. To release them, push down this button right here and they pop open. We'll go ahead and squeeze them, can you hear the ratchet Quick look at the handles. They have a rubberized coating on them. It makes them easy to grip.

I've got gloves on some of it's slick but I can still get a good grip on them. Take a look the teeth here. You can see it has a distinct pattern on them. It depends on the type of battery you're working with. This will work with either side post batteries or top post batteries.Take a look inside the jaws.

You can see how the copper cable is mechanically connected to the jaws. There's a crimp down the center here and it also has a mechanical fastening here. This is a 4 gauge material so it's a super thick, super heavy cable that's going to work with the length that it has. In this case, this is a 20 foot long cable so you need the extra material to help carry the current. We're going to go ahead and jump start the bad battery here. Double check to make sure the terminals are nice and clean and we'll go ahead and connect our orange cable to the positive.

OK, we'll leave this alone for now. Then we'll go ahead and run the other end of our cable with the positive end and connect it to our good battery on our red truck. Now, typically, you want to have your cars side by side, however, in this case, we can show we don't have to have that. The other end of the orange cable, positive side over here. Now we'll take our negative cable and run it over to the negative side of this battery here on the good side and we'll go back to our bad battery. Next, we want to take our negative cable and run it to the ground on the vehicle. Not to the battery, but on the engine block or frame or body work you can get a good ground on. In this case, we're going to use a bolt that goes directly into the block right here. Again, every engine's going to be a little bit different but this is the general idea. On our good battery, we'll go ahead and start the truck, let it run for a few moments and then try the car with the bad battery. Once we have the car with the bad battery working, we can go ahead and disconnect the cables and basically we just do it in the reverse order that we did putting them in place. With that, that'll finish it for our review of the Hopkins super duty jumper cables, part number HMBC0860. .

Pretty unsatisfied with the design of this product - the clamps require two hands to hold the locking button down (right next to the metal teeth) while opening the clamps. Then, the clamps don't open wide enough to sit firmly on the battery contacts. The cables seems to be heavy duty and of good quality, but the locking design is poor. 585355
