Keep your hitch free for towing by using this unique cargo basket that attaches to your vehicle's spare tire mount. Heavy-duty backing plate fits standard-bolt-pattern mounts. No need to remove plate once installed - carrier easily detaches.

I ordered the Surco spare tire basket as I wanted some extra space for a small charcoal grill and cooler as I drive out out on the beach in soft sand that often has ruts that are 24" deep in spots and some hard berms. Why buy a JEEP with great approach angles only to put a trailer hitch rack that defeats the design.. I watch JEEPs and other SUVs bottom out and hit hard enough to have the stuff get bounced out all the time. This basket is a much better option and opens out of the way rather than having to reach over a hitch rack. The overall quality is very good but the support arms were nearly impossible to attach even when following the instructions carefully.
etrailer was on back order but kept me informed every few days. It works great for my purpose and I put thin plywood on the bottom so I can use it is a bar/table.
I have not put more than 30 lbs on it and have had no issues. I have not driven at highway speeds yet but expect it will be fine. I wrapped one layer of Gorilla tape around the end that sticks out of the spare tire wheel, this took up the small amount of play and and gives a more snug secure fit and is squeak/rattle free.
I would suggest that a quick cam release with a lock as an option for this rack that could be used on other Surco racks and hitches rather than have to wrench it on and off, I would buy one.
I would give this a rating of very good for design and quality, if the support arms were a better design then it would be excellent.
I would recommend this item to any JEEP owner.

This has a nice look to it and adds to the outdoor/rugged look of my jeep. But, when it comes to usefulness it fell through. If you plan on going on bumpy roads or anything but a paved highway and carry more than a few teddy bears you will need to find something sturdier. Mine bent and lasted me one trip half way to alaska. I had to get straps to help support the weight as it bent down and threatened to throw our luggage onto the road behind. Recommended product if you don't really weigh it down and keep a smooth drive.
Problems with assembly: Both V support bars on bottom of cargo basket were unable to be attached due to misalignment of pre-drilled holes.

If you loosen the bolt in the center of the V support bar and pull straight up on it, the outlying holes should align. Then, you should be able to tighten the center bolt.
The Tire Mounted Cargo Basket was just what I needed for family trips. It took less than 15 minutes for my daughter and I to put together. The Basket held up well during our first beach drive. Looking forward to using the cargo basket on our next adventure.
Works great on our jeep!!! Just don't overload it an your fine. Easy to put together an put on. Adds tons of space in jeep.
Happy with product. Wish they gave size of hitch receiver. It would be very handy to have quick release on this product.
Product arrived quickly, I was able to easily put it together, however there was one screw missing, I was able to substitute one of the same size I had in the garage. Other than that, good review. Will use it on my next trip to the beach.
fast shipping and the rack is good

I have used the Surco spare tire rack year round for a year for everything from Surfcasting on the beach, hunting in the North Maine Woods. It has held up great and is a far better choicethan a trailer hitch rack for my needs as it swings out of the way.I did find that it was easy for people to walk into at night so I added small stick on battey powers lights called APALS or All Purpose Adhesive Light Strips. I have a board that fits in that I use for everything from cleaning Striped Bass, Upland birds and it serves as a coffee station in the field.I only hose it off and it has held up great in the salt water areas I go. My Jeep is currently on Nantucket Island.I hope this helps.
