Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Curt Coupler Safety Pin

Hey guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we've got the CURT coupler pin with chain that we're going to take a look at. Now, these pins are designed for use with couplers with a five-sixteenth-inch hole, easily slide through there, and they've got a spring mechanism on them that's going to hold them in place, so we won't have to worry about them falling off. Now, this is one of many applications this can be used for. The usable space for our pin is going to be right at two inches. So, inside of our keeper here, if you've got a five-sixteenth-inch diameter hole and two inches of space there, this is going to work out really well. The thing I really like about this particular set up is the chain. Very often I see these misplaced, maybe they don't get put in, they get left on top of the toolbox, we wind up losing them.

In this case, anytime our trailers unhooked, we can just store that right there along side of it, and we won't have to worry about misplacing it. When we're ready for use, simply slide it in, latch it closed, and we're ready to travel. The chain itself is going to be a total of 12-inches long. That should allow you to get it mounted on any existing hole location or if you're creating your new one, that will give you plenty of options in range of where you can mount it. Also, the finish that we have on the chain, our pin and our spring keeper is going to be a clear zinc. That should minimize corrosion, give us years of good service, especially with the chain attached, we're not going to lose it.Now, when comparing these to other coupler pins out there, there are several options available that don't have a chain attached.

If you're in the habit of losing them, I think this is a good idea. On the other end of the spectrum, if you're looking for additional security, we have coupler pins like this you can actually slide a lock on. So, you're able to secure your trailer to that ball mount and ensure nobody can separate it.Now, to get our pin installed, we'll either reuse an existing hole if we already had a tether-style pin, or we'll want to drill a hole. I've drilled just a small hole here. We're going to be using a bolt with a lock nut on it.

You could also use a self-tapping screw. It doesn't hold a whole lot of weight. It's not something that needs to be super structural, it just needs to ensure that our chain doesn't come off.So, I'll bring my screw down through there. Get it in the hole, attach it to and then just tighten it down. At that point, to install it on our coupler, we need to release our spring, slide the pin through, and re-engage it.

At that point, you're going to be ready to head down the road and you're going to ensure that your coupler is not going to come unlatched or whatever you've secured with the clip, you're not going to have to worry about it coming undone. And that will complete our look at the CURT coupler safety pin with 12-inch chain.
