Video Transcript for Review of the Safety Chain Loop for Trailer Hitch Receivers

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this raw steel weld-on safety chain loop for trailer hitch receivers. Has a 10,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this trailer hitch safety chain loop can be welded to other hitch fabrication parts to create a nice secure hookup for your trailer safety chains. Does have a raw finish to it, which makes it ready to be welded on and it can be painted in the color of your choosing.

The weld-on design allows for custom mounting options. A few specs on this, the diameter of this loop is 7/16 of an inch. Give you a few dimensions. If we measure the overall outside length end to end is right at six inches. The inside is right at five inches.

And if we do the width, the width overall is right at two inches. Inside is right at 1-1/4 inches. And as we mentioned, the capacity for this is 10,000 pounds. And again, lots of times, you'll see this welded on underneath the trailer hitch opening so that you can hook your safety chain to this. But that should do it for the review on this raw steel weld-on safety chain loop for your trailer hitch receivers.

Parts were for a custom 24” receiver draw bar. Quick shipment of parts helped with my short timeline.

This mount is thicker/beefier than the others. It showed up much sooner than promised and shipping was fair. George at etrailer does NOT try to make extra money by charging too much for handling. It was a GREAT transaction all the way. GREAT product and GREAT service!! Thank you etrailer for being honest and fair!

Quick shipping after placing order.

I bought a receiver for my 2011 Mini Countryman S from a company that apparently stopped their production run, so I think I got the last one that was lying in a corner of the warehouse or something. (ETrailer's Curt receiver hangs too low, exposed and ugly, so I did not buy that, but it would have been a lot cheaper.) The receiver I bought hides up behind a slot in the lower section of the bumper cover, requiring only a small hole that a receiver cap covers - very clean. It is made to a class III standard, but will never tow more than a ton on the Mini. The problem was they sent me the one without a safety chain ring - presumably for people that only need to mount bike racks and such - so I had this ring welded on by a local welder for his $50 minimum charge before I put the receiver on the car. As with any safety item like this, my hope is that it will never be tested, but it is likely at least as strong as the receiver it's mounted on. It was exactly what I needed, for a good price.

No issues. This is an inert product. Once welded on, its there to use.

Ordered a few weld on trailer hitch receiver tubes among other trailer parts. Parts were delivered in a timely manner and the quality of the receiver tubes is excellent. I will buy from this group in the future when I need trailer parts.

by:

My Cargo trailer came with one of these so wanted to add to my mini dump trailer. I took a die grinder and opened the gap to get the 3/8" #7000 safety chain in the loops then welded to the tongue. Great service from E-Trailer, I have been using them for all my trailer & RV stuff this year.

by:

Needed this safety chain loop for my motorcycle trailer and was just as advertised and delivered quickly. 5 min welding job and 5 min of spray paint made it look like a factory install. Thanks

by:

This was sent with a multiple order to fabricate a 36" extention to carry the rack n roll trailer for my kayaks with a Lance camper that overhangs my Chevy 4x4 PU.

The products are perfect and the employee crew of this company is top notch. Informed directly of receipt of the order, what items were there and what items would be there in 3 days and their promise of delivery was ironclad.

One of the most enjoyable transactions ever of multiple complicated products.

AAA+++

I used this ring on a hitch extension I made. It was a great fit for what I needed.

by:

Easily one of the best buys at eTrailer. Why make this little Jem when you can buy for so little, just thought it in your cart when shopping and forget about it. Easy to weld and I could not break it after installing it, so it's strong.

by:

A fair price. VERY reasonable shipping to Canada. I’ve bought quite a few! I weld these to all of the receivers I build. A perfect product for what I’m looking to do!

by:

Fair price and worked perfectly for my application

No problems. I am a very satisfied customer.

by:

Great product! It arrived in just a few days from ordering it. It came unpainted so with just a little clean up it was ready to be welded to my two inch receiver so I had a better place to attach my trailers safety chains. I would highly recommend this for its Quality and Price. Great doing business with Etrailers!

by:

Lightning fast service, Item as described and good quality...have ordered from these guys before, so far, everything has been excellent quality, great packing, and lightning fast service,...for your trailer...this is the place!....and I don't use these words very often either.

by:

Product was as described and the service from etrailer is excellent.

by:

Looks like it's going to work just fine. Perfect for my midsize trailers I intend to pull. Has a shiny polish on it, so I didn't get my hands all oily when inspecting it. Nice touch!

by:

These are perfect for what I need, and I don't know where else to get them. They are always reasonably-priced here. E-Trailer orders always arrive quickly.

by:

Good quality - welded onto a hitch I fabricated and it looks good.

by:

Fast shipping. Excellent info on this site. I’ll be back! Thank you etrailer!

  • Does Safety Chain Loop # E950 Install Above or Below Trailer Frame
With safety chain loops like the part # E950 you can install the loops above or below the frame of the trailer as needed. Most people install this below trailer hitches on the vehicle side like you see in the attached picture.

  • Compatible Quick Links, Safety Chains, and Chain Loops for Adding Safety Chains to a Trailer
I pulled the quick links and quick loop that you referenced as well as the safety chains, # 2118-605-04, that you purchased and found that the best option for you will be the 3/8 Inch Quick Link, # 6590-044-04. This quick link will fit through the safety chain links and the safety chain loop. The measurement of the opening of the quick link is 0.48 inches (31/64 inches) which is slightly larger than the 7/16 inch diameter of your chain loops (see photo). I made a short video showing that...

  • How to Add Safety Chain Loops to Aftermarket Jeep Bumper with Built-In Hitch
The Safety Chain Loop for Trailer Hitch Receivers part # E950 is designed to be welded to the bottom of the receiver tube on a trailer hitch to provide an attachment point for a set of trailer safety chains which are required when towing. This would be the only legal way to safely attach safety chains loops to the bumper/hitch. It will require welding but it's a very simply job for anyone with this experience. I also recommend a few coats of spray paint once welded to protect the metal.

  • 4-Way Kit to Add to Rear of 5th Wheel Camper for Utility Trailer
The easiest solution for adding a 4-way to the rear of your 5th wheel camper is with the 4-way kit # 18252. This will splice into the taillight wiring of your camper and give you a 4-way for the utility trailer. Then for weld-on safety chain loops you could use the part # E950. This will provide the attachment point for the safety chains from the utility trailer.

  • How Should the Safety Chain Attachment Loop part # E950 Attach to Trailer Hitch
As long as a qualified welder is used, a Safety Chain Attachment Loop like part # E950 could be welded to the receiver as shown in the photo I provided. Having an amateur welder weld it could result in the hitch being weakened. This would be the best and easiest solution for you. There's no set distance that you should have it welded on the hitch at, but if you use the picture I attached as a guide you would be just fine.

  • Where to Attach the Safety Chains After Installing the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit
You will need to locate the safety chains before the cut that is made to install the Fold-Away Coupler Hinge, # FHDPB330301, to be in compliance with DOT regulations. Normally the chains are welded to the bottom or side of the trailer framing, and ran forward. I would have a qualified weldor, weld a Safety Chain Loop, # E950, to the bottom of the trailer frame, before the fold way cut, and then attach safety chains, like part # 2118-348-04, with Safety Chain Quick Links, # 2114-553-04....

  • Why Doesn't Demco Coupler Have Safety Chain Loops
There aren't any safety chain loops on the Demco coupler part # DM13205-95 that you referenced because you want to attach the chains to the trailer frame and not to the coupler itself incase for some reason the coupler was to come off at the welds. For safety chain loops that you could weld to your trailer frame we have the part # E950.

  • Why do Safety Chains Have to be Behind Fulton Fold-Away Coupler
The chains need to be to the rear of the coupler of the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3" x 3" Tongue - Bolt On - Up to 5,000 lbs # FHDPB330301 because it is a DOT regulation, for which quality and reliability of a product has no bearing. Specifically it requires the chains to be attached to "any point to the rear of the attachment point" based on my research. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well of the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit # FHDPB330301.

  • Longer Safety Chain Recommendation for Longer Curt Ball Mount # C45270
Going with a longer ball mount like the Curt Class III part # C45270 which is 13 inches long will increase the clearance between the tailgate and your trailer jack. In most cases safety chains have enough extra length that it's not an issue but if you need longer safety chains we have the Curt chain part # C80031 which is 47 inches long and has a 5,000 lb capacity. For a weld on loop to install it we have the part # E950.

  • Do You Have a Aftermarket 2-1/2" Receiver For a 2012 Ford Expedition?
I have some options for you as there is currently not a custom fit receiver for your 2012 Ford Expedition. First we have the 2-1/2" Curt Class 5 Universal Weld-on Hitch w/ Brackets # C37CR. You will be able to weld this onto the frame rails of your Expedition. Do note the basic design of this receiver as it will likely result in lower ground clearance. We have several 3 inch channel trailer couplers that could work for you (see link). For a 2,000 lb capacity coupler the Dutton Lainson part # DL13728 is a very popular option that would work well. I would have a qualified weldor, weld a Safety Chain Loop, # E950, to the bottom of the trailer frame and then attach safety chains, like part # 2118-348-04, with Safety Chain Quick Links, # 2114-553-04.

  • Could Trailer Safety Chains Attach to the Inside of a Trailer Coupler Channel
Running safety chains on a trailer on the inside of the channel would be pretty difficult as it would be hard to secure them to the inside of the channel and it would get a bit complicated where the chains come out since they would be right where the coupler attaches to the ball. With that being said, if you can find a qualified fabricator who could securely attach safety chains/cables to the inside of your frame channel what you are asking about would be feasible. You would just need...

  • Can Safety Chain Loop Be Welded to Ball Mount for Towing Trailer
That would be a problem, yes. Your Safety Chain Loop # E950 needs to be welded to something that is welded or bolted on to the frame of your tow vehicle. Since a ball mount is secured to the hitch receiver via a hitch pin it isn't safe enough. Safety chains are supposed to be there as a last resort in a worst-case scenario where your trailer becomes uncoupled from your tow vehicle - this is why the safety chain loop needs to be installed directly to the tow vehicle itself.
