Video Transcript for Pilot Ford Brake Light Trailer Hitch Cover Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Pilot Ford brake light trailer hitch receiver cover, part #CR-007F. This 2" by 2" hitch cover provides all of the benefits of a regular hitch cover, keeping out dirt and debris with the added bonus of the lit up Ford emblem. The emblem lights up when you depress your brakes providing additional visibility. It's constructed of a durable AVS plastic. It also includes a foam pad to help reduce rattle. The incandescent light is easily replaceable and it just simply plugs into your existing 4 point connection. Now that we've gone over the features I'll go ahead and show you how easy it is to install.

Now you will need to provide your own pin and clip. If you don't have one, that's okay, you can find here at etrailer.com, part #PC3. Let's go ahead and feed it into our receiver and line up our pin holes. That looks pretty good. Then we'll take our pin and clip, put that through, put our clip in place and then we've got it.

Then we'll take our 4 point plug, and just plug it in. Now let's test it out. It looks great. That's going to complete our look at the Pilot Ford brake light trailer hitch receiver cover, part #CR-007F. You can find this and everything else right here at etrailer.com.

What's up man.

Worked great when I first got it (about a year ago), but noticed a couple months ago that it isn’t lighting up anymore. I don’t know if it’s actually broken somehow or maybe there is a user replaceable bulb that’s just burned out.

The good news is that the bulb is a replaceable 1157 incandescent bulb. There is a flat spot on the hitch lens near the bottom that you can use a flat screw driver to open and gain access to the bulb to change it. You can listen to how to open it at time stamp 1:10 in the video link below. You can pick up a 1157 bulb at a hardware store or we carry them as part # A1157B.

I actually found the info about the replacement bulb in the description, and figured out how to change it. However, the replacement bulb is an 1141, NOT 1157. This hitch light needs a single filament light i.e.1141 1157 is a dual filament bulb with bayonet pins that won’t fit in the socket for this cover. Also, there was evidence the bulb burned out due to overheating, so would recommend replacing with an LED bulb if you can find one at a good price.

@Beratna Thank you, we're having that corrected! We offer a replacement LED bulb as part # DI67ZR.

I ordered this lighted hitch cover to replace one that broke! Quick delivery and good customer service. We couldn’t find this lighted cover anywhere else!

by:

this trailer hitch cover break light is great, second time I ordered it, someone hit my explorer and broke it, service over all has been always great with etrailer, I will and have recommended etrailer to friends and family.

The delivery was delivered as promised on the day quoted by your company. Thank you very much. Your prize for this item was very reasonable. Keep up the good work.

When inserted in my FACTORY TOW PACKAGE reciever, it stands out 1/2" from the gasket sealing the outer rim. The plug is small and too close together to even plug in....I have a 2021 FORD EXPLORER XLT with factory tow package! Not satisfied at all! I have emailed you and get no response !!!!

It sounds like you have a recessed hitch. You would need to make sure that there is enough room from the hitch pin hole to the end of the cover in order for this hitch cover to fit. The distance you would need would be from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the cover would have to be at least 2.5 inches with the foam gasket in place, and 2.9375 inches from the center of the pin hole to the back of the cover without the gasket in place. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to better assist you.

Looks great, easy to connect, highly re commended.

Ive had one of these covers for some time and it worked just fine until I broke off the post on the connector. I have tried wiring it to a regular connector without any luck and my guess is it has something to do with the ground. Likely easier to get a new connector but am unable to find one any ideas?

Patrick B.

11/13/2013

I have not seen any connectors sold individually that have the two pole setup that omit the yellow and brown wires. That being said, you should be able to splice a regular 4-pole in place, like part 18004. I would definitely recommend soldering and heat-shrinking the splice joints rather than using mechanical splices.

by:

Looks good but I can’t hook it up because the wiring is about 2-3 inches too short. I’m putting it on a 2021 Ford Ranger with a factory hitch and 2 wiring connectors

Thank you for your review. I apologize for the inconvenience. Here is a product that will lengthen your wiring: Part # HM48144

by:

Didn't realize I'd have to buy a pigtail for it, wires are too short.

Mike L.

It will depend on your setup. If your 4-pole is attached to a mounting bracket, many times you can push the connector back through the bracket which could allow enough slack to connect to the # CR-007F hitch cover. If not, youll need an extension like part # HM48145

Etrailer Expert

In some instances, if the 4-pole connector is attached using a mounting bracket, you can push the connector back through the bracket, which will free up enough slack so you can connect it to the hitch cover. If not, youd need to use a loop like # HM48145.

by:

I like it very much. Adds a little uniqueness to my Explorer.

by:

1 year in use works same as day one. Always a great experience with this Co

Great

by:

Nice idea. Would prefer if it worked as a running or break light instead of a signal light. When plugged in, my vehicle thinks there is a problem with trailer lights, so I don't really use it.

by:

This is my second order of this product from etrailer. The only reason I ordered a second one, was the first one was damaged. But I had it on my vehicle for almost two years. Highly recommend this trailer hitch cover, very good looking item.

by:

I've had this brake light on my truck's receiver for over 2 years and it is still working. I've backed into some dirt hills a couple of times and the light which was the first thing to hit, stood up to the abuse. If I ever break this one, I'll order another one.

by:

The hitch covers were nice and look to be as ordered. Could have received sooner.
Overall happy with both hitch covers.

by:

Haven't used items yet, however, they appear in excellent condition and will suit my needs perfectly
Thanks

by:

great product and service. The brake hitch light was as advertise.
I am very please with this purchase.

by:

Just what I wanted to replace one I had that got crunched.

by:

Good looking cover. The receiver tube is plastic otherwise it would get a higher rating. Looks good though - inexpensive - fits well - hooks right up to a 4 pole plug. No complaints.

by:

Ordered this hitch cover and it arrived relatively fast. like the product so far, easy install and instructions and as usual excellent experience with trailer.

by:

EASY AS 1,2,3 TO MOUNT & ASSEMBLE ANY CUSTOMER WILL BE ABLE TO MOUNT ON TRAILER HITCH. NICE ILLUMINATED FORD EMBLEM WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED.
ALSO IS NOT A PRICEE ITEM.

by:

This is a wonderful hitch cover. It makes the truck rear end much more visable when applying the brakes. Also it shows when you use the right turn signal. I would but it again.

by:

It's alright. Plugs right into 4 pole wiring. It lights up when you touch your brakes, and flashes when you lock your doors from the fob and put on your right turn signal, but not when you put on your left turn signal. Weird.

by:

Arrived in perfect condition. Looks as displayed and installs easily. Would have given 5 stars but the unit fits a bit loose in the hitch housing. Seems to be Good Value for product.

by:

Really nice extra brake light. Took 5 minutes to install and hook up. Great item for the priceand I got this Ereally fast. etrailer is a great company to deal with. Will definitely buy here again!

by:

Excellent product, will recommend to bu y.

  • Will Ford Lighted Trailer Hitch Cover Fit a 2014 Ford Edge
I went out to the warehouse and pulled the Lighted Ford hitch cover # CR-007F to measure it for you. From the center of the pin hole to the nearest end it measures 3/4 inches. And from the back of the face of the cover to the center of the pin hole is 2-1/2 inches with the included foam gasket in place, or 2-15/16 inches without the foam gasket in place.

  • Solution for Light Up Hitch Cover that Shows Trailer Connected Error Code
You could unplug the wiring connector of the Ford Hitch Cover part # CR-007F and your 2020 Ford Explorer would stop thinking a trailer is connected but you would lose the light functions. Basically your vehicle thinks a trailer is connected any time the trailer wiring is plugged in.

  • Is Ford Lighted Hitch Cover # CR-007F Compatible with 2015 Ford Escape Tow Package
When the Ford Brake Light Trailer Hitch Receiver Cover, # CR-007F, is plugged into the factory tow package wiring of your 2015 Ford Escape it makes the vehicle's computer think that a trailer is connected. Since this connector only has two pins there is no power draw on the left turn signal/taillight. Some vehicles with the factory tow package will then throw an error code thinking something is wrong. This is why you are experiencing the fault signal and fast flashing when you use the left...

  • Can Ford Light Up Hitch Cover # CR-007F be Fitted with White LEDs Instead of Red
No the LED lights for Ford LED Brake and Tail Light Trailer Hitch Cover # CR-007F are only available in red. This is due in part to lighting requirements on vehicles. A white light could be distracting or blinding to other drivers depending on how bright it is. Red is used on tail lights and brake lights which is why nearly all lighted hitch covers light up some shade of red.
