Off-Road Cargo rack

This off-road cargo carrier lets you transport your gear on the back of your Jeep, ATV, or UTV. It has a raised shank that elevates the platform for improved ground clearance over steep and uneven terrain, and it's angled away from the rear of your vehicle to accommodate rear-mounted spare tires. It has raised side rails that contain your gear and provide tie-down points, and an open-floor design that offers stability for your cargo.

Raised Shank for Improved Ground Clearance

Cargo rack extended shank

The carrier shank has an 11" rise to improve ground clearance over steep and eneven terrain, and to make it easier to load and unload your cargo. It also extends the basket away from your vehicle so it doesn't make contact with your bumper or rear-mounted spare tire.

Raised Side Rails

Off-Road Cargo rack

The carrier has raised side rails that help keep your cargo in place. The rails also provide multiple anchor points for a cargo net, bungee straps, or other tie-downs. The back of the rack is open to leave clearance for your ATV's rear rack or your UTV's bumper.

Easy Assembly and Durable Construction

> Off-Road Cargo rack

The carrier is easy to assemble. Simply bolt it together with the included hardware. The basket is made of heavy-duty steel with a rust-resistant black powder coat finish, and it has an easy-to-clean open floor. Reflectors (sold separately) are available to increase the carrier's visibility at night.

Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin

> Off-Road Cargo rack

An anti-rattle, threaded hitch pin is included for securing the carrier to the hitch receiver. Align the hole in the shank with the hole in your vehicle's hitch, screw the pin into the hole, and secure with the clip. This will reduce noise and movement of the carrier in your hitch.

Video Transcript for etrailer.com Off Road Cargo Carrier Review

Hey, guys. Today we're going to be taking a look at the etrailer.com Off Road Cargo Carrier. For anyone who owns a Jeep or another off-road vehicle, this is going to allow you to get more gear than what can fit in your vehicle to go with you on your trip because of the increased ground clearance we're going to have when compared to your standard cargo carriers. Now, something I want to point out right away is that we're going to have an 11" rise in our shank, which is a lot more than your standard cargo carriers. This is going to drastically increase your ground clearance and your departure angle for when you're off-roading. I also want to make sure you know that if you have a vehicle like our Jeep right here where your spare tire is mounted to the rear, you're more than likely going to want to pick up a hitch extender, like our vehicle already has. This is going to allow you to get not only the carrier, but any other hitch-mounted accessories you have out past your spare tire. The carrier is going to have a 500-pound weight capacity, so it's going to be more than enough to get any of your coolers and gas cans, or any other gear, out of your vehicle.

Now, right here we have it on our ATV, and right off the bat you're going to see it does add a good amount of storage space for us.If you've got a second person on your ATV and they're taking space on your back rack, you may not be able to get your coolers, or gas cans, or anything like that. So, this off road cargo carrier is going to allow you to strap all that stuff down and continue on your way. A couple of things I want to point out off the bat is that our carrier does sit directly behind our tires, and that's because we have an axle-mounted hitch. So, if you do have that axle-mount hitch, your carrier is going to sit behind your tires. You want to be wary of any mud or rocks that could be slung up onto your carrier or anything you have on it. So, just keep that in mind when loading your carrier.

Another thing you want to keep in mind is where your exhaust sits. For example, on our ATV right here, the exhaust sits right here, so we're going to avoid putting any heat-sensitive materials directly behind it. We want to get them over. Now, with all that being said, it's still going to provide a lot of use for your ATV. We're still going to have that 500-pound weight capacity with these side rails that can still be used as tie-down points to strap all your gear down, and we still have that 11" rise in our shank. So, we have a lot of ground clearance when it comes to the back, so going over rocks or rock crawling, you're not going to have any issues bottoming out. Now, here we have it on our UTV.

Now, it sits just below our tailgate. We can still have access to it all the way. We can open it up, fold the tailgate all the way down. We can still grab everything we need without interfering with the cargo carrier. Sometimes it's nice to have that extra space on the back.

If you've got your bed full and your four seats are filled in the cab, but you've got a bunch of stuff that you still need to carry, coolers, gas cans, stuff like that, it'll still be able to haul all that, or even if you have some dirty stuff like muddy boots, or anything like that, or even some game that you don't want to haul inside the bed or in the cab, you can put it on the back as well. You're still going to have that 500-pound weight capacity no matter where you put it, and now you see here we have it on our front-mounted hitch. You can do this for UTVs, your ATVs, or any vehicles where you just want that extra bit of space, or even if you have some valuable cargo, expensive coolers, firearms, you want to keep them on the front just so you can keep an eye on them while you're traveling to make sure nothing bad happens to them. Now, before we unload the carrier, let's show you how it performed on our test course. Now, up first is going to be our slalom. This will simulate side-to-side action by taking a sharp corner or evasive maneuvering. Now the alternating speed bumps, which will simulate driving over uneven pavement or pot holes. Now we have the solid speed bumps, which will simulate driving over speed bumps or onto your driveway. Now that everything is unloaded, I'll give you a few measurements to give you an idea of the storage space this carrier has. Now, from inside rail to inside rail on the width, that's going to be 45-1/2". Then from inside rail on the back to the front side of our front rail, that's going to be 18-1/2". Now, the reason the front rail was left off of the design is so that it can be compatible to use with ATVs. What it'll do is extend the back rack of your ATV all the way out here, so you can get any cargo or other gear loaded with you on your ATV, but don't worry. If you don't have that front rail, if you mount it on your vehicle like our Jeep here where the spare tire is mounted on the rear, it'll act as that guard to make sure nothing slides off, although we do highly recommend that you strap down anything you load. Now, with any hitch-mounted accessory, you're going to have added length to your vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a few measurements.First, the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest point of the carrier is going to be 9", while the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the carrier is going to be 31-1/4". Now, this carrier is going to be only for your 2" by 2" receivers, and it's got a threaded hitch pin that when bolted down, takes away the shake and play from the carrier while we're traveling. Now, it's going to be very easy to assembly. We only got four bolts on the bottom right here. Then we have two more at the top, so it's going to take little to no time to get it together, and it's also going to have a nice sturdy steel construction, which will be very durable, with a black powder coat finish that helps resist rust and corrosion. The carrier is only going to weigh in at about 30 pounds, so it's going to be nice and easy to handle. Now, something you want to keep in mind is that if you have this carrier installed, you cannot tilt it away from your vehicle to gain access to your trunk, and it also does not fold up to your vehicle when it's empty to conserve on space added to the back. With that being said, it's very easy to handle. When you get to your destination and unload it, just remove it from your hitch and set it aside. With all that being said, that's going to do it for our look at the etrailer.com Off Road Cargo Carrier.

Very sturdy as well as being a great value, this is listed as an “off road” carrier. Yet, it is much more. I like the elevated position that gets the carrier as well as the loaded gear well above the vehicle exhaust. The rear cargo door can be fully opened and closed with the carrier installed. Once the carrier is loaded with gear though, one will not be able to open this door. The rear glass door, however, can be opened if needed. 646942

Bolts together easily. I think mine may have got bent in shipping. You can see that the left side is not level and sags just a bit. Overall I’m happy though! 641080

I would give a 5+ if I could. The original carrier came with a defect. eTrailer cannibalized another carrier and sent me a new part no questions asked. Shipping outstanding, customer service second to none, products excellent. I am a repeat. repeat customer. 639097

Do you have a question about this Hitch Cargo Carrier?

  • Front Hitch for 2018 Toyota Tacoma That Allows Skid Shield to Remain Installed
  • The front-mount hitch that best meets your requirements is the Draw-Tite # 65070. This will allow you to re-install your skid shield after you bolt on the hitch. I recommend this model also because it offers a higher vertical load capacity of 500-lbs, as compared to the Curt # C31075 which is rated for only 350-lbs. The no-drill installation is shown in the linked video and the clean appearance after installation can be seen in the included photo. A front-mount hitch is a great...

  • What is a Safe Minimum Height for a Cargo Carrier?
  • A hitch mounted cargo carrier doesn't have a specified height requirement. You are correct that the longer the carrier extends the less ground clearance it will have on an inclined angle like a driveway. Some carriers have a rise integrated into the shank for that very reason like # E98874. This carrier has a 2 inch rise to change the angle. If you will be towing on level ground, a minimum height of 8 inches is enough for the suspension travel, but I personally would shoot for 12 inches...

  • I went to take some measurements of the 20x48 etrailer.com Off Road Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # E98875 for you and found that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the the beginning of the shank rise is approximately 4-3/4", the measurement from there to where the carrier levels off again is about 5-1/4" and the measurement from there to where the shank ends is 20-1/2". The accompanying photo has these measurements on them for a visual representation. This carrier has an 11 inch...

  • Will Off-Road Cargo Carrier Fit 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
  • Though we have not had a chance to test fit the etrailer.com Off Road Cargo Carrier # E98875 I can say with certainty that this carrier will fit and work well on your 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. This is because when we test fit a hitch on a 2016 Crosstrek, the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13135, there was 2-1/2 inches from the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper, and Cargo Carrier # E98875 measures 9 inches from the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier.
