Modular Gear-Carrying System

Yakima EXO Modular System

This modular system includes everything you need for your remote skiing adventure. The SnowBank carries 5 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards, and the GearWarrior cargo carrier is perfect for hauling all your snow gear. The two-tier base system swings away, while fully loaded, for rear cargo area access, and the top tier can be removed if you only need to carry 1 accessory. Using the cargo carrier on the lower level, without utilizing the top tier, increases the weight capacity to 250 lbs.

Because the Yakima EXO system is modular it lets you transform your hitch into the ultimate gear-carrying rig. You can outfit the system with various accessories (sold separately) to carry all your skiing, biking, and camping gear. The system is compatible with a ski rack, bike rack, cargo carrier, and an enclosed cargo carrier, and you can easily swap them out to match any outdoor activity. You can also add base camp accessories, like a camping table. Lastly, because you can carry two accessories on the back of your vehicle, it frees up space on your roof to carry even more gear.

Ski and Snowboard Carrier

Yakima EXO SYstem ski rack

The SnowBank ski and snowboard carrier lets you carry 5 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards. It has DoubleJoint hinges that accommodate thick skis and snowboards.

Yakima Soft Rubber Grips

The arms on the SnowBank have sturdy yet flexible rubber grips. The rubber lines the top and bottom of the arms and protects your gear from being scratched or scuffed by the carrier.

Yakima Large Push Buttons

Push buttons make the arms easy to open, even when wearing heavy winter gloves. Simply push the buttons and raise the arms to load your gear.

Cargo carrier

Yakima EXO SYstem cargo carrier

The GearWarrior cargo carrier lets you carry coolers, luggage, firewood, and other large, bulky gear. It's easy to detach the from the base unit so two people can carry your gear to your lodge room or to the firepit in one trip. You can also attach a wheel kit (Y97VR - sold separately) to convert the carrier into a wagon.

Swing-Away Design for Rear Cargo Area Access

Yakima EXO System with bike rack and cargo carrier

The hinged arm on the base lets you swing the unit away from your vehicle. This provides full access to your vehicle's rear cargo area and eliminates the need to remove your skis or the cargo carrier when you're unloading your vehicle or letting your dog hop in or out of the back.

Yakima SwingBase Lever Safety Latch Demonstration Swinging Open

To open the hinged arm, simply rotate the release knob counterclockwise until it's unscrewed from the arm, pull out on the spring pin, and swing the rack away from the rear of your vehicle. The arm will lock in place when it's fully extended, so your hands are free to open your hatch and remove cargo.

Yakima TopShelf swings 180 degrees

In addition to allowing access to your vehicle's cargo area, the EXO can also provide access to your gear stored in the cargo carrier. Once the base unit is fully extended, you can swing the top tier back 180 degrees, with your skis and the carrier still attached. This will provide unfettered access to your gear on the lower level.

Yakima SwingBase Lever Safety Latch

To close the base unit, just pull the release lever at the hinge and swing the extended arm back into position. Once you hear the spring pin lock into place, rotate the knob clockwise until it's tight.

If you leave the base swung open for an extended period of time, you'll need to install the included jack stand to help stabilize the arm. Turn the rod on the jack to fine tune the height so the system stays level.

Easy Installation and Setup

Yakima SwingBase Lever Safety Latch

To install the EXO system, simply slide the shank on the base unit into your 2" hitch receiver, insert the threaded hitch pin, and tighten it down with the included 24-mm wrench. The threaded hitch pin also reduces noise and movement in your hitch. The second tier bolts to the base to provide the second level of storage.

Yakima SwingBase Lever Safety Latch

Dual arms on each tier have tracks with cleats and SpeedKnobs that secure EXO accessories. To swap the ski carrier or cargo carrier for a different accessory, undo the latches on the sides of the arms, rotate the SpeedKnobs to allow the cleats inside the tracks to free the carrier, and remove it. Next, put the new accessory in the tracks, rotate the SpeedKnobs so the cleats secure it, then close each latch.

Complete Security for EXO System, Accessories, and Gear

Yakima Built-in Locks

This EXO system includes 10 SKS locks to secure the system, carriers, and your skis or snowboards. The two tiers have locks that secure them to each other and to your vehicle's hitch receiver. Both tiers also have locks in the arms to secure the SnowBank ski carrier and the GearWarrior. Finally, the ski rack has 2 locks to secure your skis. Because the GearWarrior doesn't utilize locks, this EXO configuration will come with 2 extra lock cores.

The SKS locks for the system come with the 2 base units - 5 with each. Because they are packaged separately, the locks for the top tier and bottom tier probably won't be keyed alike. However, they can be swapped out to match each other and even your other Yakima gear.

EXO System Accessories

Because the EXO System is modular you can add accessories for whatever adventure you have planned, or swap them out for other activities.

Yakima BackDeck

The BackDeck camping table (Y84VR - sold separately) is perfect for use at the campsite. It lets you prep meals, lay out your gear, and even mix drinks at the end of the day. Simply remove the carrier on the top level and install the table.

Yakima EXO SYstem bike rack

The DoubleUp 2-bike rack has ratcheting hooks that grab your bikes firmly by the front wheel - not the frame. It's perfect for carrying nearly any bike, including bikes with carbon frames, disc brakes, thru axles, or full suspensions. Simply remove the ski rack and install this carrier in its place.

Yakima Gear Warrior

The GearLocker enclosed cargo carrier has 10 cu ft of storage space for carrying helmets, clothes, and other gear. It keeps your gear secure, dry, and away from prying eyes. The GearLocker can be installed on either the top or bottom tier and can be paired with the GearWarrior cargo carrier to maximize cargo space.

Video Transcript for Yakima EXO System Ski Snowboard and Cargo Carrier Review

Hi everyone. It's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we are looking at our Yakima exosystem with this snowbank ski and snowboard carrier as well as a gear warrior cargo care here at etrailer. If you're into the Yakima exosystem then you know how you can build up and out with your different accessories. Now this kit put together has the snowbanks E carrier as well as a gear warrior which I think is a great pair, because then you can carry your winter sport equipment up here as well as all your extra gear that you want to carry around to have the best trip. Let's talk about weight, capacities or size capacities.

We have this little bank here on top, and this can carry up to five pairs of skis, but also depends on the size of your skis or your snowboards. Like we have here is some skis, some snowboards and make sure that your bindings are thick enough to pass as for the gear warrior. If you have it on just the swing base and you take off your top shelf and your ski carrier off this will have a weight capacity of 250 pounds with it fully loaded. Like what we have with this kit. It has a weight capacity of 110.

If you have this on the top shelf you will have a weight capacity of 80 pounds while these can be mixed and matched. You can have the on the bottom or this on top is really up to you How you want to use it. I like it in this configuration because I think it's the perfect height just to quickly grab my snowboards and skis. Also, it's a nice way just to let everything kind of trickled downwards and not have to worry about cargo hitting this. You can see with this paired with a gear warrior that there's plenty of space to carry large bulky items and different types of cargo.

But if you have larger bindings that might make a difference. So let's measure from the bottom of my skis to the bottom of the swing base. And I have six inches from the swing base to the skis. So that's a clearance You get to work. with something special about the exosystem not only can you mix and match accessories but you can also swing everything away and to do so.

You have to start at this knob in the back, loosen this knob completely until it releases a swing base, then pull this knob out and then push it all the way out. This swing base will swing 90 degrees until it latches by that knob in the corner that secures it. And this will allow you and give you plenty of space to say open your hash, grab things out of your trunk. If you have a truck you can lower your tailgate. Also, it gives you space to unload your gear while someone else is working with the car with it fully loaded I did know that there was a bit of weight on our entire system. So good thing is that the top shelf comes with this Jack. So I highly recommend installing it to support the swing base, especially if you have it swung out for an extended period of time. Not only can this swing the swing out plus so can the top shelf, which is very useful. If let's say you want to access your cooler or larger items on your gear warrior but obviously you don't have the space to do so with the top shelf and the way to swing this out you first have to unlock this hitch pin and lock try not to drop it. Then you pull this snap or turning this snap all the way out. from here. You can then pivot the top shelf, 180 degrees and this is especially useful because then if you have all your friends with you one could be grabbing all of your skis and snowboards and the other could be unloading the gear warrior. Now I'm going to take these off, including the top shelf so that we can take a closer look at the components. The maximum length of ski you can fit on. This is 185 centimeters which is around a little bit over 72 inches. Also note how we plant it down on the skis binding. So just keep that in mind, in terms of your bindings. If you know, here I have precinct bindings on my ski so I wasn't able to load them up and down. You can see here, even with the double joint hinge at the end, I can't bring it to a close. So just keeping that in mind with your bindings. So my measurement here from the bottom of my skis to the top of my bindings. is an inch and three quarters now with this depend on where you are placing it for when you Mount it. So if you do find your bindings are a little too thick you can still Mount them side by side as for the crossbar spread which is a distance from one point to the other from center to center, we have 21 and a half inches now for the dimensions of our snowbank carrier itself for length from one end to right where that button is it is 32 and a half inches. I do like how our skis and snowboards are mounted here because it's super quick and easy to just open that button and grab my skis for when I want to go. But the downside of it in this position on our swing base is that it is lower to the ground. So that means as you are driving be mindful that there may be snow and possibly dirt kicked up towards your equipment. At the end, you do have that big button. And one thing to note is that you can use this with your thick glove. You just press that and it pops up and stays into place. It also has this ratcheting here at the bottom just to help you secure your skis of different Heights the inside dimensions, where you have the smallest amount of space within the bars from bar to bar it sits at 64 inches long and four width. We have it at 21 inches with this style of cargo care. It's kind of like a roof basket on your hitch and it have a gap on the inside that allows things to dry out, or just sit out in the air and you'll have to worry about water pooling. You do have a gap between the bars of three and an eighth inches though. So just keep that in mind who, whatever you're storing let's talk about what it's made of. So the entire gear war is made of a durable steel construction with this black powder coat that helps it stay rust resistant. Now, if you do scratch it up, I recommend trying to touch it up just to maintain that resistance. If you have the back deck from Yakima exosystem you can see how it also fits perfectly inside your gear warrior. If you want to carry that with you I highly recommend picking up the warrior wheels cart kits because this will transform your cargo care into a cart. If you have any other questions about this system I actually just had a conversation with some of my coworkers where they ask them questions about it. Let's take a look at that discussion. We've been able to play around with all of the Yakima exosystem down here all week even throwing things on the swing base. That's half shelf We've been mixing them around building them up, taking them off. It's a lot of different products. So I understand if you guys have any questions about how the system works, this is your time. Interviewer So these products will only work on the swing band, correctyeah, they will. Swing base is the core to this entire system and nothing else will work if you do not have that sweet base. Interviewer And what products do you have on there right nowSo right now I have the swing base and on top of the swing base is our gear warrior, which is like a roof basket for your pitch. And then we have the top shelf installedinstructor Which the gear warrior you can actually throw on these little wheels and we can actually make it into something that's portable. Yup. If you we're to turn it into a cartInterviewer Now, could you carry 2 of the gear warriors Could you carry one where it is now and then put another one up on top. Yes, absolutely you can So you can get for the cargo carrier so you can carry two of them each so the gear locker is the cargo carrier. And the gear locker is the enclosed cargo carrier. That looks like a box So you can have both of those on there at the same timeInterviewer So both of Those or two of the gear warrior, or two of the locker you can like mix and match those, which is really nice. Interviewer And then do you have the bike rackYes, I'll actually grab that bike rack real quick So then the thing about the bike rack is if you're going to be loading two things at the same time the bike rack has to be by itself. On top. Alright, If it doesn't get caught on your pants So like for the bike rack, if you do have bikes obviously it's going to be pretty tall. But so if you have the gear warrior or the gear locker on the bottom the bike rack goes on topInterviewer And you couldn't put two bike racks on thereNoInstructor No, there's not very much room. Yep, that's how quick and easy it is to pack something on top and now even carry two bikes, as well as all of your equipment on the back. Interviewer Now how about locks There's a lot of places to put locks on this system I think the most I counted was nine all at once. I think it was with the bike rack and the, like the gear lockerOn the bottomInstructor it was the gear locker, yaBecause the swing based comes with three locks. So one for each of the knobs, and then there's a hitch pin. The top shelf comes with three locks again for the knobs and the hitch pins to hold the top shelf. And then each of the items have their own spots for lock course. Like the bike racks have two block core spots on one on each arm to lock each bike. So you can have at least nine lock cores on your system at once. Interviewer And these don't come with the lock cores pre-installed you have to add them separately. Yes. So they come with a plastic end and that's what you add the lock cores to. Interviewer Right. I mean, that way you could make sure that you have all of them the same key numbers you can have them all keyed alike. Yeah. So like here on our small bank we still kept the plastic lock port on there just so you can see what it looks like. So it will still function the exact same way. It just won't be able to be locked until you add a lock core. Interviewer Cool. Now the swing base comes with key slots. Cause that's an important part. I believe it comes with the locks. Instructor It did whenever we we're putting it togetherYa cause that's what you need to use. The knotInstructor So, Lock cores are definitely a big one. It's almost like if you're getting one of the kits systems you'd almost want to just have those bought already. I Think the best thing to do is once you get the swing base also get like eight locks in anticipation of your future accessories. Instructor Yeah. Cause we we're talking about it with some of our other coworkers and it would be a pain if you got like almost everything that the exosystem can give you. And then you have like seven or eight keys that you have to go through and figure out which ones are, which it wouldn't be Fun. Interviewer Yeah. You'd be better to get them all at once. And then just have one key that works for all of them. Then just add them as you go. Interviewer So, the hitch lock comes with the swing base and the knobs on the spring base should come with locks but everything else is separateInstructor Everything Else is Separate. Some of them come with like little lock cores with them, but they're not key to like with the rest. Interviewer So it's better To buy a pack. Like you said up eight and then just make sure they're all the same. Interviewer Yeah. Because Right now, like this top shelf is going to have a different key from the bottom swing base. And then the actual like bike locks are going to have different keys. So that's already three key that you have to, you know, keep track of. And that's only, you know, a full setup. This is one of the kits, correctYes. So, and if you switch it out with a snowbank or you switch to this one with another gear locker who was also had different locks. So in anticipation of how many tests you have try to think about lock doors as wellInterviewer Is the weight capacity the same for the upper tier as it is the lower tierNo. And that's what you're going to have to be super sure of. Well, not sure, but check before you load things up. Like here we have the gear warrior and it has the highest possible weight capacity which is 250 pounds if it's installed alone on the swing base. But once you install the top shelf anything on the bottom has a slightly less weight capacity. And if you put this gear warrior on this top shelf it will have a weight capacity of 80 pounds. So it's a big difference depending on where you mount it. Interviewer that is a big difference. Interviewer Yeah. That is a big difference. And that's mostly to do with the hitch itself rather than the actual components, weight capacities. Yeah. Yes. All cause it's further away from the hitch. Like with any extended we have, we have the weight capacity. So also the task shelf can be push out if you're worried about clearance for your back. So I, I believe that with also being why we have a lower base weightInterviewer Now, much like a lot of bike racks will fold up so you can pull into a garage or whatnot. Is there any kind of fold-up option for this or do you have to remove it from your hitch if you're in a tight spotYes. You have to remove it. So it swings away which is, you know, compromise for not being mobile tilt the we are pulled up, but yes, theInstructor Closest thing you could get to like folding it is taking almost everything off. Like you can take off your equipment and you can take off the top. And then the two bottom arms fold in that's about the closest thing that you would get to it but it's not like you can fold it any other way and you still got a good amount sticking out but at least those, those two Yakima arms are going to slide in against the base. Interviewer Can you remove the bike rack and put on the ski rack real quickI can, One thing though about the top shelf is that it does add a little bit to where it feels slightly heavier, but ya So first you just have to back it with that, where it's open and lift your bike rack off Then I'll find somewhere to put this and then it now comes in two parts. So here's one, I just slides into those tracks and then we'll tighten those feet down on that and then lock that tab into place that secures it the tabs only turn when it's fully tightened down that how you know its fully tightened down. That's it now you can load. Interviewer remind me, you can't just buy the feet and add them to your previously existing Yakima accessories to make them work with, correct They're all stamped. They have to be for the accessories. The actual clamps are available anywhere to install. So it's just exosystem accessories that fit into those tracks. Interviewer Ya, we haven't seen Any evidence to the contrary that we'd be able to do that. SoInterviewer No, that makes sense. I just want to double check. I think the only thing from Yakima's previous line that fits on this is the skinny warrior and that's because the clamps for the gear warrior are attached to the gear warrior. So that's what the that's what allows the skinny warrior to be retrofit because it fits perfectly on top of that too. But other than that, nothing else that I know of. Instructor Okay. Well glad we could answer some of your questions on the exosystem. It's a definitely an interesting one. We've messed around with it. For what like last three days. Four days Yes. It's definitely something for people who've already filled up the roof rack or can't get a roof rack. So they're looking into this because this is a roof basket but on my pitch or a roof box on my hitch plus a ski and snowboard carrier. So I do see people that are thinking of whether they get a trailer or this as an option, as a comparison. Instructor And I would definitely say that if somebody is wanting to buy this they're going to want to be able to get as many of the pieces as possible. This doesn't seem like something you would want to be like, Oh I'm just getting this for a skis or for a bike. Like this is something like, Oh I need room for my skis, my bikes. And then maybe I'm going to go just camping. And I need two cargo carriers for the week or something like that. Interviewer That was going to be That was my one question is after our conversation this morning, that is, is a bike ride. Like if you we're just going to get the bike rack is it really that comparable to other swing away bike racks Or is this kind of more trouble than it's worth if you know what I meanInstructor Its good But like, it'sLike, you know, having a piece of like a massive puzzle it's like, you just don't want that specific piece. If you can't fill out the rest of it. Ya, I think the beauty of it is how fast it is to mix and match. Like I have not been able to install a bike as fast as I was to do this, like any other hitch mounted bike rack. So that base is what creates the speed and I don't know the beauty of it is that makes it match modular ability. So at its price point, let's say, just a bike rack on the swing I do not think it's as effective as a bike rack created just for your hitch. If that makes sense. Interviewer Yeah, totally. That's what I was wondering. So I just, after you guys have been able to think about it a little bit more, you know, reflect how it compares to other swing way bike racks. So I think if anybody we're to stumble upon it in that bike rack category, that's good to know that it's like, yeah, you can buy those just as a bike rack but there are better options if that's all you want. And this is really moreAbsolutely. My final thoughts about this whole kit is I really like how they work together with each other. You have the snowbank and you have the gear warrior This is great. If you have gear that you're perfectly fine with it being out in the cold, in the open, especially if you have stuff that might drip or are a little bit dirty and you don't want them in your vehicle. Another thing to look at is the snowbank with the gear locker. That's been really cool as well but really the options are kind of endless. You can check them all out on our etrailer website but as for how they work individually I think this works great in terms of holding onto my skis and keeping them secure as well as the gear warrior for having that cargo space that I need for my trips. All in all that, was a look at the Yakima exosystem system with a snowbank ski and snowboard carrier and the gear warrior cargo carrier here at etrailer..
