Video Transcript for Hitch Mounted Wheel Chair and Scooter Carrier Review

Today we are going to show you part number SC500 from Rage Powersport Products. What this is is a hitch-mounted wheelchair carrier and scooter carrier. This cargo carrier can also be used for a variety of other things, aside from the original purpose. What is nice about this is it actually comes with a 5-foot-long ramp to easily roll up your wheelchair or scooter onto the carrier itself. It uses a hinged, bi-fold ramp design It can also double as a regular cargo carrier. It comes complete with built-in tie-down mounting points, and also included is an anti-rattle device. And one last thing about the ramp itself is it can actually fold completely flat into the platform when you are not using it. Now we will cover some more of these features in a little bit more detail.

One of the first features we will show you is the anti-rattle device. As you can see here, we have installed a typical 2-inch receiver hitch. It is not hooked up right now, but this is the part right here that makes it an anti-rattle. What this does is, when your carrier is plugged into the hitch and securely attached with the pin, this plate goes up here. And on the bottom are three screws. These three screws actually tighten up against the bottom edge of the hitch and pull the cargo carrier down and clamp it into one position, where it cannot go anywhere. And you tighten those three screws down with a 17-millimeter socket.

The next feature we are going to show you is that the whole carrier can actually tilt up when you are not carrying anything in it. So you will not have a carrier hanging out the back of your vehicle unnecessarily. This is the pin right here. Pull out the safety clip. You may need to pull a little bit of the tension off of it. Pull off the pin, push it back into position, and replace the pin. There you have it: when you are not using it, you do not have to have it hanging out for no apparent reason. Next, we will unfold the bi-fold ramp, which is the best part of this carrier. It has a neat little pin release here. Just pull up the pin and grab the handle and just pull it right up. And also you have got another pin back here that allows you to keep the door up in an upright position when you are carrying something inside of it and then hold it open still and unfold your ramp.

Now we will go ahead and demonstrate the ramp itself. We do not have a wheelchair or anything like that but we will actually use a lawnmower here and roll it up on here to give you a better idea of how much room it takes and how easy it is to do it. We have our lawnmower in place, properly centered over the cargo carrier. All we need to do now is just go ahead and tie it down. It has got plenty of hooks right here - four on each side to tie down your equipment. Same thing on the opposite side, as well as two on the non-ramp side of the carrier. One nice little detail on here is it has carrying handles built into it also. It also has a nice rubber lining in there a little easier on your fingers as you are taking the unit on and off of your vehicle. All right, and that covers it for part number SC500.

Product is built sturdy, but be careful! Let me start by saying that I have several hitch mount products such as a large 4 bike carrier also so I am a bit familiar with products pull down for use and fold up vertical when not in use. Whenever you fold the product to or from the vertical position..."HOLD IT TIGHTLY" There is no safety stop and it will just fall past the 90 degree mark smashing into the vehicle. This means you have to hold the unit with one hand while setting up the pins and fumbling with multiple components. Here's the best part! The bracket that is installed that holds the ramp in position sticks out about 5" more than everything else on the right side and if you are not very careful then it very easily hits the suv door and leaves a nice dent in your vehicle. I can see this happening multiple times over time. This is a stupid design flaw that causes damage to vehicles and could be easily corrected by the Rage the Mfg. simply by reviewing other tilt up carriers which have more common sense built into them. Etrailer however has been excellent in all my purchases over the years and this product was deliverd to my dock on one day! Good job Etrailer! That's why I keep sending my friends to your site. 27699

Shawn,Weve heard from a few customers with your issue and we just experienced it first-hand here at our facility. Well speak with the manufacturer about adding a stop or other device to prevent the carrier from making contact with the rear of the vehicle due to over-travel.

As far as we know, the manufacturer is not planning on adding a stop.

I had similar issues that Im seeing under all these comments but have learned how to live w them with my Nissan Pathfinder. I now have a Kia Sorento and just had a hitch added to it to enable me to carry my Moms scooter on this carrier. What Id like to know is if it is safe to use a 12 pin rather than a 5/8 pin since the 5/8 is so hard to get in the holes. Please advise.

It would not be wise to use a 1/2 inch pin in place of a 5/8. That extra room will allow the carrier to shift and impact the pin. Over time, the pin will end up stretching the holes of the carrier, the hitch or both. Alternatively, you could look at a couple of anti-rattle attachment systems that may fit better than a traditional 5/8 pin without the lost of safety with using a 1/2 inch pin. Check out the parts below.

I had been lamenting about shoveling snow from multiple locations for a while. My Snow Blower (Ariens ST824) is at my personal residence, but I keep my landscaping trailer at one of our rentals' garage. I have a Ford explorer which cannot be used to transport the Snow Blower (too big) unless I use the trailer, and I can't get to the trailer when the snow is bad. I was just starting to consider purchasing multiple Snow-Blowers to keep at different locations (pitiful idea!). The SC500 is EXACTLY what I needed to solve the problem. Not a trailer but strong enough to carry my machine. And it's lightweight enough to be stored at my residence with the Snow Blower. The ramp makes it easy to load the heavy blower on board, and the fold-away feature when not in use completes the package, and allows me to always be ready. Now I can clear my residence, help the neighbors (when I'm feeling ambitious), load the machine up and take it to the rental property and our commercial space.....saving me hours of backbreaking snow removal by hand, and no embarassing calls from the cops about clearing the sidewalk! I should have searched for this thing years ago. Now, I can't wait for the next big storm to hit NJ, but with my luck it probably won't snow again til next year now that I have my perfect solution. I'd recommend this to anyone who needs a compact, lightweight, carrier. It actually saves me time and money (no need to hire anyone to remove the snow), and grants me the opportunity to make money by removing snow from other people's property if I chose to do that. Thanks for the great product! 6612

The description of what is provided with the SC500 needs to be improved. Included is a bolt that locks the SC500 into the receiver and doubles as the anti-tilt add-on. Also, included is an anti-tilt add-on if one chooses to use a 5/8" receiver pin rather than the 1/2" bolt system. I purchased both a 5/8" pin and an anti-tilt add-on and didn't need either. The ramp was purchased to transport a lawn mower or snow blower as needed using my 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. For that purpose it works very well. Suggestions to the manufacture would be 1/4" reflective poles that fold down to help locate the back of the carrier when backing up with the unit extended. Also, an option for a wheel to go in the back square opening to assist getting the unit installed into the receiver by only 1 person. I haven't tried it yet, but suspect to remove the ramp from the receiver, it would be best to have it folded up for better control. Having the unit folded out and pulling it out of the receiver is not easy as it should be, but there are no indicators as to when the receiver is almost out and when it pops out, it ends up bouncing to the ground and depending on where your fingers are, could give one a nice bruise under a finger nail. I'm still figuring out how to install and remove the unit without any help, but I think I've got if figured out. 20625

For what it 'is', it is a reasonable cost to performance item. Overall, it is a low cost very modestly built carrier for power chairs. If one uses it a LOT, expect the expanded metal mesh to begin having issues with the tack welds breaking loose. Especially if used with 6 wheel, mid-wheel drive chairs. These require significant tie-down force to keep them immobilized and thereby exert significant force onto the somewhat lightweight expanded metal decking. I use mine on the rear of a Ford extended cab F-250 longbed. Therefor it gets pretty good centrifugal force in turns resulting in the need for good tie-down technique. This is my 3rd carrier of this model in about 5 years. One broke the main support off inside the hitch tube due to a traffic speed bump. One was wiped out by other traffic in a parking lot. Granted the parking lot incident disabled my carrier, but, it caused about $15,000.00 damage to the side of the 28 foot camper that turned too short. It sustained about 18 feet of "ripping" down the side of the camper, clear through to the interior. I was not even at my vehicle when it happened. I was parked in a handicap access space. 335372

by: Ken J.08/27/2012

The SC500 is a reasonable value for the money. It is NOT as durable as one might hope. Significant components cannot be obtained factory direct. Some significant components are available via original provider, but NOT from other franchised vendors of the SAME product. Hence, if you purchase from vendor "a" in New York and move to California, you cannot purchase replacement components from your (now local) dealer "b" in California. One must make these purchases from dealer "a". As I often must install and remove my carrier multiple times per week, the 'anti-rattle' device is a major hurdle. It requires that I get down on the ground, under the rear of the vehicle, and loosen (or tighten) bolts. Therefore, I added that part to my steel recycle bin. Even minimal tension on ratchet tie down straps result in 'imprinting' of chair casters into the thin expanded metal mesh. In fact, a trip or two down bumpy country gravel roads have actually caused greater imprinting and thereby the straps have come loose. Caveat Emptor. 53198

The hitch wheelchair carrier shipped the next day after ordering and only took a few days to get to me with free shipping. My brother and I put it together and installed it on my mom's suburban. She is 67 years old and is able to operate the ramp and fold the carrier up when not in use. She stands to the side and drives my dad's wheelchair on it to take him to his doctor appointments. It works well for their needs and was the most cost effective wheelchair carrier I could find. I am a physical therapist and deal with wheelchairs everyday and this carrier works great for transport. 57571

I use it all the time to transport a scooter. Works great. A little heavy for a single female to handle but its relatively easy to remove and reconnect.

The carrier appears to be well made and should be very functional. There are a couple of small areas that are problematic however. I wanted to use a pin lock to hold the unit in my receiver but I find that the hole seems to be on the very low side of the tolerance and is slightly too small (I don't have calipers, so this is a guess.) I had to use a hammer to get my standard pins inserted. (I have two. Both were too tight until the paint was removed.) Also, the angle of the vertical ramp support prevented the ramp from being lowered until it was bent out a little. One final suggestion would be to glue the rubber bushings for the handholds. They seem to fall out. 78854

The product mechanism is excellent. easy to install , I had read all the reviews previously but it is a huge problem, it rains on it twice since installation have not yet used it ., and the bolt and screws and spring pins looks like it is stainless steel but cannot be because they are already rusting and not even a month old. Also where it is welded and inside the tuning it is also rusting because I think it was not properly treated. So a bit dissatisfied with the workmanship and me having to replace all bolts, screws and spring pins. may be it should be made with aluminum then it would not be no corrosion. 113859

As a first time owner of the SC500 I'm dissapointe in the construction of the Bracket & the siderail it bolts too (WEAK) and Spring loaded pin design to hold ramp in the upright postion it is a great safety hazard the ramp could fall to the road or hopefully back inside the cargo carrier while driving on a rough road. IT ARRIVED DAMGAGED BROKEN REFLECTOR & BENT UP SIDE RAILS & RUST ON THE BENT MARKS SHOWING ME THIS WASNT DONE IN SHIPPING BUT SENT OUT FROM ETRAILER IN THIS CONDITION ... The rest of the construction & design was very good no complaints... The time to recieve it from placing the order was amazing.. 62464

The product looked great coming out of the box and the instructions were simple to follow. There were some problems that I encountered, several of the nut and bolts broke while tightening so I replaced them with grade 4 quality. I had to drill out the hole to the stinger a bit larger so I could put the retaining pin in through the receiver. Also the platform has a bit more wobble than it should. The tolerance should be tighter so that this doesn't cause metal fatigue while traveling. Other than that it severed our needs quite well. 133585

Excellent Bought this to transport a 26" snowblower and I couldn't be happier. I did a bunch of research and was slightly skeptical as this was the least expensive one I could find that had a ramp attached but as soon as it arrived and I assembled it I was very pleased. I assembled it in the middle of a snowstorm and had no problems at all (other than when the directions blew away - but that's because I'm a dope). etrailer's follow up after the purchase was great and it arrived faster than I expected. Great experience. Jay F. 5063

Well-versed product Attaches to my SUV(05 Dodge Durango)when needed. Pros: haul extra baggage/luggage(easy access), 24" wide snow blower, lawn mower(handle folded), 4 cylinder engine block (heavy). The long ramp helps during loading/unloading of wheeled items (snow blower, lawn mover.) Cons: Unable to open hatchback(rear door) when carrier is loaded which is expected and depending on cargo. If used with 06 Jeep Liberty, carrier will not stow(fold up)due to clearance of spare tire mounted in the rear door. 3483

The cargo carrier and the ramp were delivered in perfect conditon. This is going to out quite well for my snowblower this winter. I like the fact that the receiver had a large offset which help keep the carrier away from the vehicles bumper. This helped clear my salt speader that i mounted on my truck. The one thing that didint make sense is that they do not provide a hitch pin and the hole for the 5/8 pin that is required needs to be drilled out a bit becasue the powder coat made the hole smaller. 59059

etrailer shipped the product even sooner than originally promised. The SC500 arrived 3 business days after ordered and in excellent condition. Assembly was easy and straight forward. In moving the ramp to its various positions I found the retaining pin hole for the upright locking position didn't quite line up with the pin. Enlarging the hole with my drumel and a grinding stone corrected the problem. I haven't used it to transport the wheelchair yet, but I am sure it will work fine. 53068

I bought this product because it came with an attached ramp, rubber covered hand holes to make installing easier on the hands. I wish there were an additional pin to keep the carrier from hitting the tailgate when it is being folded up when not in use. The only additional items I still need to purchase are holddown straps and an outdoor grill cover to keep the chair dry in bad weather. etrailer may have these items, but I didn't see them. 21035

Rack was delivered within a week of order, very little assembly required, only problem we had was when we folded the ramp flat on the carrier the spring bolt would not secure the ramp. I was going to bungee it down, friend stopped by and used a drill and put a hole in the ramp and now works great. 112614

We are using our hitch mounted carrier....it works fine except for the right top hits the truck tail gate. I put some electrical tape so it won't get dented more...right now there is a tiny nick. The carrier is made well...using it for a three wheel scooter.....will try the four wheeler soon. 259828

Good Carrier Carrier does everything I wanted it to do. Reasonably priced, Shipping was excellent. Because of over travel past pin support hole when folding platform against vehicle ramp bracket could hit tailgate of vehicle. Drilled hole and bolted rubber damper to prevent over travel. 3965

I'm rating the SC500 Hitch Mounted Carrier an 'Excellent' for its features, ease of assembly and use. Just a word of caution, one of the supplied bolts broke while tightening and I fear that may be due to their origin. Be careful on how tight you make them! 19148

This unit exceeded my expectations. I will not be using it in a Reese hitch. It will be mounted on the extended tongue of my concession trailer. I will be able to use the ramp to wheel my Honda 6500 watt generator on and off as needed. 35886

Went together much easier than I expected. And functions exactly as needed. Ease of operation even for a 68 yr. old is great. It is a little too heavy for me to install but all other manipulations are quite easy for me. Thank you. 21006

Ask the Experts about this Rage Powersports Hitch Cargo Carrier
Do you have a question about this Hitch Cargo Carrier?

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier for Carrying Snow Blower
  • Both Pro Series cargo carriers can handle the 270 pound snow blower. The difference is that # 63153 is 24x60 inches rated for 500 pounds and meant for use in a 2 inch hitch receiver. The # 63155 is 20x47 inches rated for 300 pounds and is meant for use in a Class I or II hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. The weight of the carrier and the snow blower can't exceed the tongue weight capacity of the hitch. This information will be printed on a sticker affixed to the hitch. Since your vehicle...

  • Solution for Cargo Carrier that Blocks License Plate
  • The legality of an obscured rear license plate varies from state to state. If you want to heed the letter of the law, the plate can be relocated to the rear of the cargo carrier. We sell quite a few cargo carriers, and to be honest, it is really not that much of an issue. You could zip tie the plate to your carrier, or use a bracket with a light like part # LPL55CB (In most states, the rear license plate is required to be lit after dark). If your vehicle has a trailer connector,...

  • Can Rage PowerSport Swing-Away Arm # AL105 Be Used With a Hitch-Mount Bike Rack
  • The Rage PowerSport Swing-Away Arm # AL105 is application-specific for use with their Hitch-Mounted Wheelchair/Scooter Carrier # SC500. It is not a general-purpose product and so cannot be used with a bike rack. A better solution for carrying bikes without losing rear-of-vehicle access is to use a specialized hitch-mount rack built for this purpose. Thule offers their Apex Swing 4 Bike Carrier for 2-Inch Hitches, part # TH9027, that can carry up to 4 bikes and swing out from the rear...

  • Use of the SC500 Scooter Carrier with a Class I Hitch on a 2008 Ford Focus
  • The only solution I can recommend for your Focus is the use of a small trailer. A trailer would be able to handle the scooter and some other gear behind your Focus and would stay well within the tongue weight capacity and towing capacity of your vehicle. You definitely should not attempt to use the Hitch Mounted Wheel Chair and Scooter Carrier, item # SC500, on your Ford Focus. The hitch itself is only rated for 200 pounds tongue weight which is less than your power chairs weight even...

  • How to Carry a Wheelchair on a Toyota Corolla
  • If you're speaking of a non-motorized folding wheelchair, it would be possible to carry a wheelchair on the back of your Toyota Carolla using a trailer hitch and a cargo carrier like part # C18110. The # SC500 you referenced is designed for use in a 2 inch hitch, which would be used by a larger vehicle. If you're speaking of a heavier electric wheelchair or mobility scooter, you'd be better off carrying the wheelchair or scooter using a small trailer, because the only hitches available...

  • Scooter Carrier for 2011 Subaru Forester with Class III Receiver
  • The Swing-Away Scooter Carrier you mentioned, part # SC500-AL105 is not a light item. It weighs approximately 130 lbs. I doubt you would be able to install or remove the carrier into the hitch by yourself. Before choosing and installing a mobility scooter carrier, you will need to determine the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle, which is typically 10 percent of the towing capacity. According to my research, a properly equipped Forester has a 2400 lb towing capacity which would mean...

  • According to my contact at MaxxTow the folding ramp on their 30x50 Wheelchair Carrier for 2-Inch Hitches # MT70260 can be removed with a wrench or socket. The ramp mounting points are secured with nylon lock nuts. I also checked with the team at ProSeries, who offers a similar folding-ramp cargo carrier # PS10401-10402. • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier with Ramp that Will Clear the Spare Tire on a 2010 FJ Cruiser
  • Thank you for the extensive measurements you have provided. That will help out a lot in determining cargo carrier fit. Based on the measurements, we do have a few cargo carriers that will fit, but the GearCage, # HCK642, will not fit. The problem is that the spare tire will make contact with the cargo carrier rails, and the ramp may not be able to shut properly. Instead, I recommend a carrier that will extend out beyond the spare tire so the tire is not an issue. Take a look at the Hitch...

The widest folding cargo carrier with a ramp that we offer is the MaxxTow 30x50 Cargo Carrier, # MT70106. The interior dimensions of this carrier are 48 inches long x 28 inches wide x 5 inches deep. • Wheel Chair Carrier Recommendation for a Chevy Silverado
  • There are no speed limits recommended for use with the Rage Powersports Carrier part # SC500. As long as you properly install the carrier, secure the wheelchair to it, and obey posted speed limits you would be perfectly fine. For a set of ratchet straps the part # 34414 would work great for securing the wheelchair to the carrier. • I spoke with my contact at the manufacturer and he said you should have no weight problem when pushing your generator on the carrier.
