Video Transcript for MaxxTow Aluminum Hitch Cargo Carrier Review - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Today on our 2008 Toyota Highlander we're going to be test fitting the Maxxtow 20 by 47 Cargo Carrier for 2 inch hitches. This is an aluminum carrier so it's nice and light. Part number MT70108. We'll begin our test fit by inserting the shank of our carrier into the hitch on our Highlander. You'll want to watch for the hitch pin holes to line up. With those in line, we'll go ahead and place the hitch pin through. We're using today part number PC3, as this carrier does not come with one.

We'll go ahead and grab some measurements. The closest part of the carrier to the vehicle is going to measure about 8 and 1/4 inches. Overall we're adding about 30 and 3/4 inches. The ground clearance comes to around 12 inches. The exhaust on this vehicle does exit on the rear towards the passenger's side so you'll want to keep that in mind when hauling heat sensitive materials. You've got about 14 inches of clearance from the closest edge of the carrier to the exhaust.

I'll open our hatch here and we'll see where the carrier's going to brake, excuse me the hatch is going to brake over the carrier. It looks like we have it at about 20 and 1/2 inches, so you'll just want to keep that in mind if you're stacking items any higher than that on your carrier. With the cargo carrier loaded on our 2008 Toyota Highlander we'll go out and take the Maxxtow 20 by 47 Cargo Carrier part number MT70108, we'll get it loaded with some gear and we'll take it out on our test course so you can see what it looks like in action. Here on our test course we'll go ahead and take it through the slalom. This will show you the side to side action such as sharp corners or evasive maneuvers. Secondly, we'll go through our alternating speed bumps. This will give you the twisting action which simulates potholes, hitting a curb, uneven pavement, or hitting road debris.

Lastly, we'll go through our solid speed bumps. This will show you the up and down action such as driving through a parking lot, parking garage, or out of a driveway that has a steep grade. .

Excellent product, the only thing that kept me from giving it a perfect score is the assembly that is required. After the hour or so of bolting everything together, the product works great. Very sturdy construction and lightweight. I did notice the warning sticker states that your speed, while the cargo carrier is attached, should not exceed 55 MPH. I did not expect this to be an issue, so hopefully it doesn't just fall of while I travel down the freeway! 133295

Was a great deal! It's mounted now on my camper's rear bumper. Light weight aluminum, so I never have to worry about corrosion. Didn't take long for it to get shipped and arrived in a matter of several days. Thanks E-trailer! 71882

Nice finished product, but involves a lot of assembly using small bolts and lock nuts. If I were to do it again, I would attach the hitch tube before attaching the upper frame to the lower frame. Following the sequence in the instruction manual hinders your ability to square up a screw driver which is needed to tighten the bolts and lock nuts. I had to run to the local hardware store to replace 4 of 8 bolts and lock nuts because I stripped the bolt head while trying to tighten them. Otherwise, a really nice product. 228022

As good as when I bought it a year ago.

Only assembled, not yet used. There are a lot of nuts and bolts! Agree that a hex head instead of Phillips head would be better. Better yet, make it a torx head and include the bit! Other observation is agreement with others not to snug anything up until all assembled...then tighten everything. Also, would have been easier to attach the tongue to the bottom frame first (IMO). After assembly it seems to be pretty solid. I am thinking about rigging some kind of heat shield neat Subaru Outback exhaust just to be sure to prevent burn/melt of plastic corner and protect materials in carrier. Also will add reflective tape to back frame for additional visibility. Will report performance after 2000 mile move to Colorado. 430283

Has held up well and I like the light weight aluminum. I never rigged any heat shield and there has been no issue in that regard. I added reflective tape to the exterior of the frame for visibility and safety. I am pleased with the product.

Everything arrived quickly and complete. assembly was a little time consuming but very easy. Product is lightweight but strong. I did end up drilling a second hole for the pin since it seemed to set back over 6" from the receiver. 227530

I love this cargo carrier. It's all aluminum (except for the hitch mount) and extremely well made. I'll use it with my class B motorhome and my pick up truck when I need to take additional cargo. 260321

Never assembled one of these b4 and it was a lot easier than expected! I read reviews first and did not follow directions either. I looked it over and it is easier if u install base first and use washers both top and bottom and put vertical braces on the inside. Will be more rigid. (Retired Mech. Eng) 448760

Ordered this item along with a Class III trailer hitch and wiring kit for my daughter's Wrangler. The carrier arrived quickly. Assembly took a little over one hour, lots of screws to use when putting it together, and the directions could be better, but I managed OK. What I really like about this carrier is it's light weight...I can easily carry it around with one arm and my daughter can install and remove it on her own. There is some play between the carrier (male end) and the receiver (female end) but overall the unit is solid and stable. 386857

My order arrived on time as initially projected. Assembly took only an hour and was made easier by reading recent customer feedback. Prior customer feedback suggesting orienting brackets with stripes facing out while mounting on the inside, along with sequencing and only hand-tightening fasteners, all proved helpful. Initially aligning top to bottom frame with reflector double holes was key to starting off on the right foot. Presetting electric screw gun torque with a relatively light stop, helped to cinch screw without deforming aluminum frame or phillips head screws. Nice quality product and well packaged. 405759

The product I ordered is wonderful. Lightweight and is large enough to carry my scuba tanks and wet gear which I had NO intention of placing in my new Infiniti. It arrived quickly and took about 40 minutes by myself to put together. Customer service answered all my questions and the whole transaction was painless and professional. if I ever need another trailer, etrailer is the place I will purchase from. 500969

Came quickly for standard shipping at no charge. Unit was well packaged and no damage. If you are going to take it on and off daily aluminum is the way to go, due to reduction weight. All steel units are heavier and will rust. The directions aren't great, but here is what you really need to know! All the washers shipped attach to the top and bottom 8 bolts that hold the unit to the support arm. That's right 2 washers per bolt. Top and bottom. Hardware (braces, signs and lights) can go inside or outside the frame. If you do it inside, it adds some structural integrity. The picture on the box shows outside as does all 75 videos. Just do them all the same way and take your time. Use the right shaped Phillips Head screw driver and no pliers! 361889

Pretty solid unit, lots of nuts and bolts. Instructions could use a bit of help. Make sure everything is oriented correctly before assembling. I also installed the brackets inside the unit instead of outside.I used stainless hardware everywhere I could. That's just me. The light kit, Rola LED Light Kit for Railed Cargo Carriers - 59516 along with the Trailer Light Mounting Bracket for 6-1/2" Oval Trailer Lights, Steel - Black Powder Coat - BK70BB is a nice add-on. It took some retooling of the upper rear cross-member to properly fit brackets and lights to my liking. No cob-jobbing here. removed the top rear cross-member, removed parts of the flange, the brackets and light kit bolted right up level and tight. Had to move a couple of brackets also, no big deal. Don't know if a flat bracket is available, that would be ideal. All in all I am very satisfied. Dealing with etrailer always cake. Check out the pictures. 589543

Just what I was looking for! My main use for the cargo carrier is to bring the garbage to the dump. I will also be taking a long road trip so I plan on using it for all my luggage. It will be a great room saver in the car! 698647

Assembly was easy enough. Only problem I found were 2 of the small screws were useless. Had to buy a couple to finish the assembly. As for long term use to early to tell. 696299

Just put together product, have not used yet. Looks to be of good quality. Dinged the rating a little due to poor instructions. 683328

- MT70108
by:

Generally, the carrier went together in a sturdy fashion. There were a couple of issues which were either inconvenient and/or unfortunate. First and foremost the upper frame arrived a damaged/crushed spar. Fortunately, the degree to which the item was damaged did not adversely impact the assembly, and I believe to be, structurally minor to the overall strength of the carrier. It would have been helpful if a nut wrench had come with the kit. The nuts were metric ... I didn't have a wrench that was suitable for either sized nut provided. 669736

- MT70108

Nice and light compared to the heavier steel carriers, yet quite capable to carrying the items that I purchased it for. 654774

I like the product and would buy it again. However, one thing to be aware of is the location of your exhaust relative to the carrier, which may be an issue on long trips at highway speeds in the summertime when the exhaust is particularly hot. The plastic corner connectors on the carrier that were next to the exhaust on our Subaru Forester, and a plastic bin in the carrier, melted during a long trip we took last summer. One thing I do really like about the carrier is its light weight, which makes it so easy to install and remove. Since I don't have a truck, it's been very handy for taking trash and recycling to the transfer station. 589139

It is a good idea to get a exhaust tip that turns away from the cargo carrier to avoid damage. If you have a 3 inch tailpipe you would need part # MF35180
MagnaFlow 3" Exhaust Tip - Stainless, Weld-On for 3" Tailpipe
$59.36
. For 2 3/4 inch you would need part # MF35179
MagnaFlow 2-1/2" Exhaust Tip - Stainless, Weld-On for 2-3/4" Tailpipe
$51.74
, for 4 inch tailpipes you can use part # MF35181
MagnaFlow 4" Exhaust Tip - Stainless, Weld-On for 4" Tailpipe
$91.31
, and for 3 1/2 inch you would need part # MF35178
MagnaFlow 3-1/2" Exhaust Tip - Stainless, Weld-On for 3-1/2" Tailpipe
$73.04
. These exhaust tips need to be welded on.

The parts went together easily. This is a medium duty carrier. All aluminum so it is light weight. I don't think I would put 500 pounds in it. Other than that it will do the job. I used rivets to put the rack together instead of the tiny bolts and used heavier bolts to attach it to the hitch shaft as the bolts they send with it don't look like they will last. 556456

Product as advertised and appears to be sturdy. However, it was time consuming and a pain to put together. The self locking nuts prevented the use of a drill driver for quick assembly. The drill stripped the screw heads. Have some patience when putting it together. 467067

Used it on my Subaru Outback for a 756 mile trip. Worked like a champ. Used an anti wabble kit and strapped a waterproof luggage bag inside. It rained the whole trip out. I never felt any drag on the car's handling. It never made a noise, and I didn't notice any increased fuel consumption. Because I worried about possible exhaust burn on the bag, I had lined the bottom and back side with cement board. It's also light and easy to load myself ( a 63 y/o woman). Love that tray. 456972

Ask the Experts about this MaxxTow Hitch Cargo Carrier

Do you have a question about this Hitch Cargo Carrier?

  • Cargo Weight Capacity of Hitch Carrier Used on Honda CR-V
  • It sounds like you have a lot of cargo to transport in and on your Honda CR-V. Hitch carriers like the 20x47 MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108 are a great way to move heavy cargo items that might be too difficult to get up on your roof. Most vehicle roofs are limited to a weight rating of 165-lbs or less and this is only a fraction of the weight that can be carried on a hitch carrier. But these hitch carriers are not intended to hold a large rooftop cargo box. The issue is that such a...

  • I have a solution for you, however, neither the Maxx-Tow 20x47, part # MT70108 or the Curt 19x60 carrier, part # C18100 can have bike rack extensions added to them. Instead, I recommend Hollywood Rack's Sport Rider SE2 with Cargo Carrier, part # HR1450Z-85. This is a Class III rack that is rated for large van and RV use. It can carry two 50 pound bikes and up to 100 pounds of cargo in the carrier, and the carrier and rack can be used independently of each other on other vehicles.

This loss comes from the actual load being moved further away from the hitch tube, which increase leverage on the hitch. The 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches made for your 2018 Prius Prime, Draw-Tite # 24966 and Curt # C11473, have a 200-lb tongue weight (TW) rating which...

  • We have not test fit a MaxxTow # MT70108 on a 2013 Explorer, but I can describe how to determine if the liftgate will clear the carrier once its installed. When the carrier is installed on the vehicle, the closest point of the carrier will be 8-1/2 inches rearward of the receiver hitch pin hole. From that point, measure upward by 7 inches. This location will represent where the closest edge of the carrier will be in relation to the bottom edge of your liftgate. I have edited a photo...

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier to Clear Spare Tire on 1999 Jeep Wrangler
  • The first step in choosing a cargo carrier for your Wrangler would be to determine how much clearance is needed. Measure from the hitch pin hole of your receiver rearward until you can clear the spare tire. You will then need to choose a cargo carrier whose hitch pin hole to closest portion of the cargo tray dimension exceeds your measurement. The problem you might find is that the pivot that allows the carriers to fold takes up quite a bit of space on the shank, so that when the carrier...

  • Raising a Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Out of Exhaust Path on a Buick Enclave
  • On any vehicle that has exhaust that exits straight out the back and not out the side or towards the ground could potentially damage a trailer hitch mounted item and its contents. I believe I have a great solution for you though. To get enough distance from the exhaust you can use multipurpose ball mount # D210 and that will get you plenty far from the exhaust. For a carrier, if using the multipurpose ball mount, you can use any carrier that fits a 2 inch receiver. The receiver portion...

  • How To Carry A 300Lb. Scooter And 2 Bikes On A 2004 Honda Pilot
  • While using a hitch or trunk mounted bike rack, the heaviest bike will need to be on the first slot of the carrier closest to the rear bumper. No, tongue weight is used for any object or accessory attached to a trailer hitch receiver and unfortunately, there is no way to increase the tongue weight capacity of a hitch for hitch mounted accessories. There are also no fail safe or safety feature built into either the vehicle or hitch receiver when exceeding the recommended tongue weight...

  • Recommended Hitch Cargo Carrier for Use on Front Hitch # C31023 on GMC Sierra 2500HD
  • Thank you for your recent purchase of Curt front-mount hitch receiver # C31023 for your Sierra 2500HD. This 2-inch hitch offers a maximum tongue weight (TW) capacity of 500-lbs so a cargo carrier rated for 450-500-lbs will be a good choice. Please click on the link provided to see all fixed cargo carriers in this capacity range. I suggest a lightweight aluminum carrier like the MaxxTow # MT70108 because it weighs only 29-lbs and this will leave more of your hitch capacity for your cargo....

  • What is the Overall Extension with MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108 Installed
  • On MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108 the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest end of the carrier is 31 inches. On your dual hitch receiver, if the upper receiver opening is higher than the front hood area of the toad then there is less likely to be an interference problem. Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier # M2200 measures just 28 inches from the center of the pin hole to the far end of the carrier so it has even less of a chance for interference. And we also have...

  • Does Vehicle License Plate Need to Relocated When Using Hitch Cargo Carrier
  • The legality of an obscured rear license plate varies from state to state. If you want to heed the letter of the law, the plate can be relocated to the rear of the cargo carrier. We sell quite a few cargo carriers, and to be honest, it is really not that much of an issue. You could zip tie the plate to your carrier, or use a bracket with a light like part # LPL55CB (In most states, the rear license plate is required to be lit after dark). If your vehicle has a trailer connector,...

The cargo bag will have the ability to adjust in height as needed to fit the cargo and secure tightly to the carrier. The cargo bag is not overly rigid so the bag can squish down to allow your tailgate clearance if keep...

  • How to Lock a Plastic Cargo Box to Aluminum Cargo Carrier
  • If you are okay with drilling into the floor of the box your best option would be a cable lock like part # e98891 that you could route through the floor of the box around the cargo carrier and then back around the top of the box to lock it shut as well.

  • Will MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108 Fit On 2012 Honda CR-V
  • As long as your 2012 Honda CR-V features a 2-inch trailer hitch receiver, the MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108 Cargo Carrier will fit. This carrier has a weight capacity of 500 lbs and you will want to check your vehicle owners guide to ensure your hitch can handle that amount of weight. If the recommended weight capacity for your vehicles hitch is less, you will need to adhere to the lesser of the two weight capacities. If you do not have a 2-inch trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite...

  • Raising Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Out of Exhaust Path on 2015 Subaru Forester

To get enough distance from the exhaust you can use multipurpose ball mount # D210 and that will get you plenty far from the exhaust. Because it is not technically an adapter it will not reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch. The 2 inch receiver part is 3-9/16 inches up from the top of the ball mount shank....

  • Is There a Light Kit Available for the MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108
  • Even though there are no specific light kits made for the MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70108, you can install the Rola LED Light Kit # 59516 using 2 of the Trailer Light Mounting Brackets # BK70BB. I have attached a picture of the brackets installed on the cargo carrier. You might also be interested in an Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, like part # 63232, to help eliminate play and deter theft of your cargo carrier.

  • Lightweight Cargo Carrier Recommendation for Back of RV
  • We have cargo carriers that are rated for use behind an RV like the MaxxTow brand carriers, but the Curt you mentioned wouldn't be a great option since it has a folding hinge which is typically a "weaker" point for the carriers. For a lighter weight option we have the MaxxTow # MT70108 which weighs in at 32 lbs and has a 500 lb capacity.

  • Light Weight Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier for a 2013 Buick Enclave
  • As far as weight aluminum cargo carriers will be much lighter than steel ones of the same size. I recommend going with an aluminum carrier for this reason and because they are corrosion resistant. We have 2 aluminum cargo carriers and they are both rated for 500 pounds. Curt cargo carrier # C18100 is 19 inches front to back and 60 inches wide. It weighs about 30 pounds. It can also fold up. When in the folded up position it measures 5 inches from the center of the pin hole to the nearest...

  • Will Exhaust on 2014 Ford Explorer Melt a Cargo Bag in MaxxTow Aluminum Cargo Carrier
  • the rear exist exhaust on your 2014 Ford Explorer should not be a problem when using MaxxTow cargo carrier # MT70108. The end of the exhaust tips are more than 12 inches from the carrier and are also several inches below the bottom of the carrier. If cargo loaded in the carrier was in the direct path of the exhaust and less than 12 inches from it then it would be a problem. The recommended cargo bag is # 59102. I have linked video reviews of both parts for you.
