Video Transcript for Curt Cargo Carrier Review

Today, we'll be taking a quick look at the 24 x 60 Curt Cargo Carrier for 2-inch hitches, part number C18153. A couple new things about this cargo basket is you can see it has the ability to fold up or tilt up closer towards to the rear of the vehicle. This allows for a compact storage and also reduces the length added to the vehicle, so if you wanted to keep the cargo basket installed onto your vehicle and pull right into your garage, it's just going to prevent you from having to take it on and off to pull into your garage. The rack can easily be folded down by removing the 5/8 inch pin and clip, here at the base of the basket and tilt it down. I'll just replace the pin and clip here. Now, the hitch pin and clip are sold separately. Now, we'll go ahead and show you how to install it.

With the carrier fold it up, we'll simply slide the shank of the carrier into the opening of the hitch. We'll then need to line up the pinhole in the shank of our carrier with the pinhole in our hitch. Once we get the pinholes lined up, we'll then insert our pin into the pinholes and then secure it with a clip on the other side. It fits in 2 inch x 2 inch trailer hitch receivers, has a weight capacity of 500 pounds and comes with a limited one-year warranty. This hitch mounted cargo basket allows you to carry extra cargo on the outside of your vehicle freeing up passenger space on the inside of your car. You can see it has a nice metal mesh flooring at the base of the basket which allows you to carry wet, dirty, muddy gear and it is going to allow that mud and water and snow to drip out and dry out for year. It has the nice raised containment walls, just going to help keep all of your gear nice and contained.

You can see it, it also has the reflectors on three sides of the basket just to protect your gear and other drivers while you're out on the road. You can see the shank of the basket, has a nice rise here and this angled shank allows the bottom of the basket to be lifted up higher giving you more ground clearance especially if you're taking it out on rugged terrain. You don't want the bottom of your basket to be bottoming up. Now, we'll go ahead and load up some gear. Now that we have all of our gear loaded up and secure, we'll go ahead and take it out on a slalom course and then our bump course and show you how it performs. That will complete today's review of the 24 x 60 Folding Curt Cargo Carrier, part number C18153. .

Very well made product. Easy to assemble (I'm 70 yrs old). I have a 2014 Toyota RAV4, and previously had been used to a bit larger cargo capacity. With my new 2 inch hitch, also from etrailer, which has a 650 lb tongue weight, and this cargo carrier which is rated at 500 lb, I can pack that extra luggage or go to the box store for 10 bags of mulch. The fold up design makes this a very convenient way to transport when empty. I also purchased the J-Pin and barrel lock set in order to stabilize that pesky jiggling when driving over bumps. 566555

Still working out great after a year. No major complaints. Just go slowly when encountering dips in the road because the bottom may scrape.

used multiple times to haul my 6hp outboard together with boat accessories for my portabote. No sway issues, no quality issues, works as expected which is excellent. Easy setup. On a heavy side as expected, but no issues setting up alone I am using this on jeep wrangler 2017 unlimited, not modified. For my application it works well with known in advance limitations: 1. due to spare tire i cannot open the gate 2. for the same reason cannot fold carrier 540679

Great trailer, really used it only once for a family trip. Wish that it had brake lights already installed but I put my own on. If putting you own on, don’t attach to underside as they will drag occasionally at various entrances, exits, etc. really never knew it was on our van until we stopped. 558442

I ordered this rack for the back of my 5th wheel to carry things that I might not necessarily want inside the trailer or my pickup. ie a lot of wet muddy clothes that smell like stagnant lake water, or my Sea Eagle inflatable boat or a cooler full of fish. I ordered it after 5:00 p.m. on the 23rd and it arrived at noon on the 26th. I did not pay for expedited shipping. In fact, I did not pay for shipping at all, and still got this 75 lb. item in less than 3 days. But if you have ever purchased from etrailer, you know that that is the type of service you can grow to expect. As far as the item goes, it seems to be exactly what I was looking for. I originally debated between 2 similar racks and could not make up my mind. Mike, at etrailer sent me an email listing what few subtle differences there were. And even though the differences were small, one of them mattered to me. So I appreciated the input. This rack is stout. It has a 500 lb. limit, but I believe it will support every bit of that. It came well packaged. All the nuts and bolts were present. It came with good instructions, although it was a simple assembly. It was attached to my 5th wheel about a half hour after I started the assembly. I could not be happier with my purchase. My thanks to Mike and Erika for the help with selection and for the timely updates on the status of my order. As I told my wife, of all the uncountable places I have shopped online, I have NEVER had the excellent customer service that I get from Etrailer. 176288

I received the carrier yesterday. It arrived on time, packed securely and well packed. It took about 15 minutes to assemble, which was also easy. I haven't used it yet, but I see no problems with the carrier. I also ordered the bag to fit, and it is a great fit. It looks nice to. 177720

Ive only used the carrier the one time, which was when I bought it. It worked great! It didnt rattle when in use, and being able to be folded up out of the way was great. It also makes it easier to store, as it keeps the profile smaller. I used the e-trailer cargo bag along with it, and it kept everything dry, even while driving through several rain storms at 80 mph. On the way down, I packed items that could get damp, just in case. After that trip, no concerns about either the carrier or the bag. It is plenty strong, and I dont doubt the capacity. It also left enough room to open the tailgate on my Ford Expedition EL, with the cargo bag loaded. I know Ill use it again, its a must with 5 kids.

After having the curt cargo carrier for one year, its held up great! Mounted on a 2010 Ford Edge, it scrapes the ground when maneuvering out of some parking lots, especially when fully loaded. Probably not an issue in vehicles with more ground clearance. I’ve never put 500 lbs on it, but a couple (~200), maybe. It has some light rust on the scratches, but has, otherwise, held up nicely. I’ve kept it in the garage to prevent too much weather damage. It’s done well on trips from TX to GA to FL. The only criticism I have is that there are no good tie-down spots. The rails, while sturdy, are a bit too large in diameter to attach my most heavy duty ratchet straps and even the larger D-rings I have. Problem easily solved with four U bolts. After that modification, the cargo carrier is nearly perfect and is now a more modular attachment. 549681

Super easy to put together and looks great. I placed this on the hitch of my fifth wheel and did have to do some modifications to the spare tire holder to allow it to fold up without rubbing on the carrier. I needed this to carry a small generator while we travel and I wanted the flip up option so we can still back into small spaces at the camp sites if needed. Very happy so far and I recommend the tightening hitch pin that is recommended so there is no wiggle (hitch pin also works great). 189055

Hi Bill,Do you have a hitch receiver installed on your trailer or are you using the Curt bumper receiver? Thanks

JoeU. The hitch was custom made by me to tow a boat. So its actually bolted to the trailers inner frame rails. Very stout! Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Bill. Joe if you are interested we do offer RV frame mount hitches, and I have provided a link to those for you. We currently have both bolt on and weld on options depending on your application.

We recently sold our station wagon that served as the vehicle we used for hauling things that didn't fit in the trunk of our cars. This includes a walk behind mower that gets transported a lot. The cargo carrier is the perfect solution and actually makes things easier for loading and unloading as it is closer to the ground. We also have the perfect storage area in the garage between the freezer and the wall. Out of sight but still easy to get to. Wish we would have thought about this sooner. One other note, the purchasing experience with e-trailer could not have been better. Easy to navigate website, very fast shipping, and awesome communication throughout. 559286

When we had our second child our Subaru Outback got that much smaller. It was either buy a larger vehicle or do something to increase our ability to haul stuff, especially when going on vacation. I decided to get this cargo carrier and let me say it absolutely does the job. I actually purchased a different one first, through Amazon, and I immediately sent it back and got this one because the first one not have the folding feature. That is KEY. Without that I wouldn't be able to park while on vacation without requiring more than one parking space (or I'd have to remove the whole thing which is not always possible). At any rate, this thing rocks! Highly recommend. 316923

I actually purchased this carrier in Aug 2015 so Ive had it for 3 summers. It remains one of the best purchases Ive ever made. I only use it once or twice a year but it has extended the life and use of my Outback. For [the money] you really cant ask for more. Worth every penny.

I selected the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier (#C18153) to assist with moving students in/out of college dorms. The carrier was very easy to assemble and attach to the vehicle. I chose the anti-rattle trailer hitch receiver lock (#63232) to ensure noise was minimized when on the road - works great! I also added a cargo carrier LED light kit with mounting brackets (#98174LED, #BK70BB) and a Hopkins heavy-duty 7-way to 4-wire coiled adapter (#HM47065). As others have commented, the light kit wiring harness is not long enough to reach the vehicle plug. The coiled adapter provided a great solution. Using the eTrailer web site has taken the mystery out of finding cargo moving solutions. 370514

I ordered this a week ago last Mon. night. It was delivered on Fri. it only took me about 20 min. to put together and install. I used it Sat. & Sun. The cargo carrier worked very well and I am very pleased with the service I received from E- Trailer. I will recommend your company to others. I am a vendor at a local Farmers Market, my tables and coolers fit very nicely on the cargo carrier leaving plenty of room for my products in my SUV. Thank You... 133242

Sherry J...I use 3-6 tables that fold in half so that would be 6 table thickness, plus my folding chair and my fold out canopy. I also put 1 large cooler or 2 smaller coolers on the hitch packer. I use ratchet type straps to hold everything in place. I have used the hitch packer to haul bags of top soil also. I put 10 bags of the soil, they were 40lb. bags so that is 400 lbs. The hitch packer is rated for 500 lbs. but I did not want to max it out. I have been using it for a month now and have hauled a lot of things with it. I am very happy with it. The nice part is the fold up feature so you do not need to install it every time. I think this was the right purchase as I have read the reviews on similar types that you can get locally but this model had the best reviews and I was very happy with the service from E-Trailer.com. I hope this helps with your decision.

OH MY GOODNESS! I used another sight the promised a quicker delivery, and less money. You get what you pay for! I was notified 8 days after I thought I ordered it that "no one can get you it that cheap" and they would charge me $60 more to send it in 2 weeks. WHAT?!? I leave on a trip in 5 days. NEVER FEAR! I found etrailer!!! They got me the carrier in less than 5 days, for a VERY reasonable cost, and we just got back from our week-long vacation. The trailer worked FABULOUSLY, and instead of cramming 2 kids, grandma, one niece and us with our luggage, we were able to put most the luggage on our carrier and have a very easy 6 hour drive. THANK YOU etrailer.com!!!! 145513

Mark G - we never hadsmelled/experienced any issue with that. We drove for around 6 hours, with food coolers and luggage in the carrier, and none of us found any issues. I, personally, am very irritated by exhaust have to keep the car on recirculate when driving and...well...literally, nothing. Weve now moved across the country with it well, it, and a moving van and again, LOVED IT!!!

Easy to follow instructions. Did not come with a hitch pin to install it to the vehicle. I also installed some towing lights onto the back to ensure maximum visibility. I loaded it up and cargo strapped approx. 300lbs of items and it made a 700 mile trip through mountain passes and flat desert with no issues. Highly recommended as an economical storage solution. 539410

OK first things first I am very happy with my new basket carrier. I purchased this model because of the S curve shank and weight capacity . I haul an atv in the bed of my truck and my tailgate stays down . The design of this carrier with a 19 inch shank allows my gate to lay flat and still gives me ample clearance to load the basket. The rack rides high enough off the ground that it does not bottom out while off road. The first basket carrier that was shipped from etrailer was defective . The locking pin shank mechanism was welded incorrectly and caused the rack to sit at an incorrect angle. I notified etrailer who quickly shipped out a new one and sent me paperwork to ship the defective one back.. The process was relatively painless, the only issue was with UPS taking a long time to deliver. The package was out for delivery from my local UPS several days in a row both days it was returned to the warehouse and a new delivery date was issued . Pretty sure they kept forgetting to put it on the truck . Frustrating but not any fault of etrailer. 430531

I wanted to take this thing on a couple of trips before I did my review. I LOVE this carrier. It is bigger than most of the ones you see out there. I saw a Chevy Tahoe today with a 19" deep carrier, and it looked ridiculous because it only fit 2 bags on it. Not this one, though. Both times I have used it, we fit a good size ice chest (facing front to back). The first time, we also had luggage for 6 that fit in the waterproof bag (that's another review). The second time we used it, it also held 6 beach chairs, an umbrella, canopy, large blanket, beach bag, 2 metal detectors (hey, the kids think it's fun to find junk), and a long board. There is absolutely no performance difference when towing this thing. I actually forgot it was on there. When we got to the beach, I just unloaded the bag, placed it in the trunk, and tilted the carrier up to park. It works perfectly. So glad I decided to purchase this carrier. It solved our space problem since we downsized from a minivan to a SUV. 266158

I needed extra cargo hauling capacity and was considering a roof top carrier. After some research (finding out I couldn't park the vehicle in my garage because of the height with the carrier mounted on top of the vehicle) I recently purchased a 24" X 60" Curt folding cargo carrier for my 2014 GMC Acadia. It pleasantly arrived before promised. It is of highest quality. It easily attaches to the vehicle with a little effort. (weighs around 70 lbs.) It is very solid and looks good on the vehicle. One feature I really like is when not in use the carrier will fold 90 degree's to the back of the vehicle which allows easy parking and will fit in my garage. The other feature is ease of loading cargo onto the carrier. It is bumper height and not on top of the vehicle. I am 6'-3" tall and would still have issues reaching the carrier on top of the vehicle. I frequently am going to the home improvement store and nursery for garden items. Now, instead of having to worry about getting the cargo area in back of the vehicle dirty, I can load it onto the fold down carrier. I did just recently use it as a cargo extender. I purchased some 12 foot 2x4's. Usually I could get an 8 foot 2X4 in the truck with a little overhang. the 12' fit nicely from the back of the truck onto the top of the carrier on securely tied down to the top of the carrier. This was an accidental discovery and one more use for the carrier. We often go to the mountains which is 20 minutes from our home to cook dinner or breakfast. It will be very nice to put fire wood, coolers and chairs and still retain the third row seating in the vehicle. Overall all this is a high quality, very well priced option for increasing the cargo capacity of your vehicle. It was 1/5th the cost of a roof top carrier, ( Yakima of Thule) easy to load, and you have unlimited height for cargo verses a roof top carrier. Also depending on the height of what you are putting on the carrier you can open the lift gate on the vehicle. 262815

Purchased this to go on a 2015 Toyota 4Runner. From the Unboxing everything went well. 11 Bolts to put this beast together, if you have help allow them to help you because on the top frame when you mount the two baskets to the center frame it can kind of be aggravating by yourself. I put this thing together by myself in about 20 minutes with zero urgency of getting it done so it could be done quicker. Overall my first impression of this thing is well-built, nice weight, great black finish, and its heavy but not to heavy. I have severe back problems and I can still lift it and put it in the hitch. I have not field tested it yet but will be shortly for a trip to Florida and once that is completed I will update my review with a Field Test. I honestly want to give this thing 5 stars I really do. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because it seems when they measured and cut the hole for the hitch pin they didn't measure it when the whole weight of the basket was pushing down on the square tube going into the receiver hitch, now with that being said all I had to do was pull up on the furthest part of the basket and the Hitch Pin went in. Now also with that being said I haven't read any issue of that on any other reviews before I purchased this thing and trust me I went through almost all of the reviews (just how I am) so might just be a small defect and would no way deter me from buying one again. I am beyond happy with the purchase so far and would buy it again every time If i needed to. Im not some paid spokesperson and no one coerced me into doing this. I just believe that If real people are buying this product then real people need to review it. Again I love the Carrier so far and once I field test it I will update my review. Thanks Ya'll 442246

This cargo carrier is very well constructed and was easy to assemble for two people. We purchased this to have the ability to take a large deck box to Florida from Michigan to have additional storage to transport our golf clubs and other household items we use in Florida. Then to use the deck box for additional storage when in Florida. We also purchased the cargo net item H9500100 to strap the box to the carrier. This has work extremely well. There was no movement and you didn't know it was even in the back of the vehicle. Do to the design of the carrier we can still get into our rear door without removing the carrier even loaded with the deck box on the carrier. Also our tail lights and license plate are still visible. 413945

Just wanted to do a follow up with you in regards with a Hitch Cargo carrier I had purchased from you before the holidays. Not sure if you need my order number or not to prove it but just wanted to give some feed back. I did send you some pictures with it installed, not sure if you had received them or not. They were before and after pictures before I added some more reflective tape on the carrier for more safety. I did have some trouble in order to keep the carrier stationary with it having to much play in it. Wasn't as stiff or secure as I would have liked it, but with really tighting up the bolts on the hitch shaft & carrier it was alot better. I do have a problem where it does like to keep getting loose and I have to keep tighting it which I dont think I should have to keep doing. The bolt has actually began to cut into the black powder coat as it's the only was to tighten it for it to remain secure. It will sway or have to much play in it if I don't tighten it. And the layer of powder coat on it is pretty slim. I use to deal with, apply and work with powder coating on products for years learning all that I could as it was a new job I took a path in with a company. So I know a bit about it. I just wish they had done a thicker layer or some kind of added protection layer on top of the basic simple application they did on the carrier. But I guess this is something I can do later on to perfect it and give the carrier a long life. Wasn't aware when I purchased the carrier that only a small coat was applied. I should have done more research with pricing but already did research on what kind and who to use when buying so I assumed etrailer was the place to shop & buy. I did very much glad I was able to talk with you, help me out and figure out what I was looking for. Giving me a my options, not pressuring me, being so helpful making it easy to purchase and delivery. When I had no idea what I was getting into you did make it extremely comfortable, personable and customer friendly helping me out every step of the way. So I guess in the long run the extra pricing is being paid for the customer support, friendly & helpful service, along with being able to call anytime getting a person and not a computer for any help or problems that I might encounter. And for that alone, it makes it worth it. Just didnt know why Curt sold things to them and the price is different when I thought I was getting a great deal already. But wanted to let you know they are being sold cheaper elsewhere than e-trailer. And it's not even a holiday special..lol I hope this email can give any insight on the product and makes sense also. I will find out starting Jan. 12th when we start traveling into the cold how everything holds up, and pray that it does great in the cold. With it being in warmer weather now I do have to admit I'm a bit scared. I hope the cold won't give me problems with constantly having to tighten things down, things can stay tight and secure without coming loose, and for the bag to hold up more than anything. On my time will tell. Maybe this can help anyone else seeing what it looks like on a Jeep Wrangler Sport also with the rear mounted tire. It's close but everything fits without a problem,no clearance issue's or mounting issue's what so ever. However, I did add more reflective tape so the Curt cargo carrier was more visible for driver's that don't pay attention and not much was offered for the cargo carrier. I have both pictures before and after, with more tape and without, and it adjusted up & down. I did have some trouble with it moving around some hitting the rear tire so I just used a bungee cord to secure it tight against the tire to correct it. This is mounted on a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport so this model covers many types and years. Can be very helpful for any other Jeep owners and can use this for any reference. This is gonna help use so much and wish we had this on the 1st move we had out to Cali. I don't have any pictures yet with the luggage and bag full yet, but will try and get them over to you when we use it and pack it up. Should help also for anyone with concerns what is looks like full, any taillight problems, license plate, etc. 466040

I recently ordered this item from etrailer.com and had no trouble at all deciding and ordering the 24x60 Curt Cargo carrier model C18153. After browsing through the options, I decided on this one for several reasons. One being weight capacity. The 500lb capacity is more than enough for anything I would ever need. Two, the diminsions were exactly what I wanted. I wanted one that was wide and deep and this one is one of the larger carriers offered. Third, I want a folding/hinging style. I drive a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and didn't want this sticking out so far all the time. I wanted the option of being able to fold it up for easier parking. When folded, this carrier on my Jeep will fit in any parking space fine without sticking out. This carrier has plenty distance between the bumper and actual carrier so if you need to access the back of your vehicle, you are able to walk/stand in between the carrier and vehicle. Quality should be no concern. This think is rock solid. Unless you are really strong or dont mind hurting yourself, you need two people to help load and unload this thing. It is all metal with very large diameter bolts. I used it for the first time on a trip this past weekend and it was flawless. I did not hear rattling, nor did I sense something was attached to my vehicle. That is almost a negative as you have to remember its even back there so you dont back into something. Overall, I feel like this is money well spent and I have no regrets. This is a top quality carrier that should last a long time. I also bought the etrailer.com Extra Large Cargo Bag 20 cubic feet model 988501 to go with this. I have not used the bag yet but it feels very thick and strong. I got the bag for a few reasons, one being rain and weather, two being road dirt and grime, third being privacy. This bag will keep the water out, dirt off, and also keep people from just walking by and seeing what you have on your carrier. No it wont keep thefts away but it will keep them from seeing what you got which is what I want. I hope this review helps. 184904

Can you open the hatch when its attached?

Bev,Yes and No. On my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, my back hatch will not fully open when the carrier is in the up position. However, when the carrier is in the down position as if you have cargo on it the hatch will fully open. When in the up position, the hatch will open but only about 6-8 inches before it makes contact with the carrier. Also, the window will fully open regardless if the carrier is in the up or down position.

Works as it should. Didn't work well for us because we would scrape the frame every time we go through a dip or driveway we chose it based on the video review for our specific car but didn't show how it handles dips. Our 2014 Acura RDX has a low hitch and this carrier sits so far out that any dip in the road will cause it to scrape. I'm sure this is great on a car or truck with a higher hitch. 574368

The Curt Cargo Carrier (C18153) that I ordered from etrailer on 12/8/2016 was delivered on time on 12/12/2016 via UPS. The box is in good shape with all the parts stayed intact. It took me about one hour to put everything together without any problem and successfully hooked it onto the Hitch recently I installed on my new Mini-Van. I have not taken it out for the test drive with stuffs on yet since I finished the job late in the evening. I like the product. It seems to be very sturdy with good design. I plan to use it to carry heavy stuffs from Home Depot that I don't want to put them inside the van. I would recommend the product to anyone that needs to have extra space to carry stuffs. Thanks etrailer tor providing good products. I also attached couple pictures showing the hookup onto the van. 324475

The carrier came faster than I expected which was great as I needed it right away. Like others have said, the box was very beat up but everything was intact. If any scratches happened during shipping, I didn't really notice them or care since this will be on the back of my SUV. I needed this to transport a large dog kennel across a few states and back and it worked perfectly. It was very easy to use a few ratchet tie downs to hold it in place. The carrier bounced around a bit more than I would have liked from the fit in the receiver but it was never a problem during transport. I liked how wide this was and it was very well priced for one that also folds up. 49165

Ask the Experts about this Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier

Do you have a question about this Hitch Cargo Carrier?

  • Solution to Carry Cargo Carrier While Towing Trailer
  • We have a similar solution that would work well, but it's not exactly what you mentioned. What you'd want is the part # D210 which gives you a ball mount that has a hitch opening above it so that you can mount a cargo carrier like the Curt # C18153 in the opening and then tow a trailer with the ball mount below. Other option is the Cargo Carrier Bunk for A-Frame Trailers # CC-255 which attaches to the a-frame of a trailer and gives a platform that you could put cargo on. I attached a...

  • Both the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13146 that you are interested in and the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75225 are identical in weight capacities and installation as well so either one will do a great job. Since you are interested in the Curt option I recommend going ahead with that trailer hitch. You will need to note that neither of these options will fit your 2017 Honda Pilot if you have the full size spare tire. You need the mini spare for proper installation. This will work great with...

Instead you could secure the cargo carrier to your hitch with the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 63232. • Using a front hitch like Curt # C31078 along with a hitch carrier like # C18153 is a great way to add cargo capacity when your truck bed and rear hitch are already spoken for. The cargo items you describe wanting to load in a front-hitch-mounted cargo carrier - a tool box, generator and gas cans - all could present a lot of flat surface area that could block air flow. Some generators like # 333-0005 have an open-frame design while others such as # 333-0002 have enclosures that would...

You can use self-tapping screws to secure the brackets to the top, rear rail of the carrier. This set up is the most cost effective option. It would plug into a 4-way trailer wiring connector. The disadvantage of a folding carrier is that since there are more hinges and connection points they can tend to have more movement.
