Video Transcript for Curt 20x48 Hitch Cargo Carrier Review

Today were going to be taking a look at the 20x48 Curt Cargo Carrier. Its been designed for use with the inch and a quarter or two-inch hitches. It offers a 300 pound weight capacity, the part number is C18110. It has a nice rise in the shank as well as in the full length of the shank its angled upward. This gives us great ground clearance here at the rear of our rack.

Cargo Carrier allows us to easily free up space inside the vehicle that we can use for passengers or pets. Its also going to keep those muddy boots and things like that outside the interior of your car. We have the raised side rail. It goes all the way around. Its two and three-quarters of an inch high. Its going to offer us ten different tie down points all the way around the perimeter.

It has a very sturdy steel construction. Its got the mesh-lined floor thats going to allow that dirt and debris to fall down through the floor rather than actually being stuck on the carrier and causing corrosion. The black powder coat finish also does a great job of keeping the corrosion from affecting our carrier. Now that weve gone over some of the key features of the carrier, let me show you how to install it in your vehicle. When a using a class two receiver hitch, we use it just like this. As you can see, this is the main shank of the carrier.

Here on our Suburban, weve got a class three or a two-inch hitch, so were going to take the collar or sleeve. As you can see, inside theres a small black tab that sticks up. Thats designed to fit right into the non-threaded hole. The larger hole sits right over top of the threaded hole and we leave that exposed so we can slide our bolt in. Now that weve got our sleeve on there, were going to slide the shank of the carrier right into the receiver tube of our hitch.

The rack is going to come with a nice anti-rattle bolt, washer and a locking washer. It also has a provided clip to secure our bolt after we have it threaded in. What we need to do is line our threaded hole up with our hitch pinhole. Once we have that in line, were going to thread the anti-rattle bolt in. Once we have this in hand tight, well tighten down that anti-rattle bolt, thats going to draw the shank right over against the edge of our receiver tube. Its going to take all the play that we have in our carrier out. Also, its going to take all that noise out that we generally hear from a none anti-rattle style cargo carrier. Once we have that tight, when I move this cargo carrier, the car moves with it. Its absolutely dead secure. Well then grab our clip, slide it right in here on the other side just as a little backup security. The outside dimensions are 48 and a quarter inches by 20 and a quarter inches with platform dimension of 48x20. The shank rise is three and three-quarters of an inch and the carrier weighs a total of 30 pounds. The manufacturer offers a one-year limited warranty. Just like that, weve got the carrier installed onto our vehicle. Well now load it down with a couple hundred pounds of gear and lets just see what it looks like in action as we go out through our test course. As we start our test course, well first go through the slalom. This is going to show that side to side action in the rack as if we we're turning corners or maybe doing some evasive maneuvers. As we make our way around the corner, were going to go into the alternating speed bumps. This is going to give you a sense of what its like when we maybe hit a pot hole or the curb we didnt quite see torqueing that rack side to side. As we go over our solid speed bumps, youre going to see that up and down action. Its going to be like if were going in and out of a parking lot, speed bumps, things like that. Thats going to complete todays look at the 20x48 Curt Cargo Carrier designed for use for both inch and a quarter and two-inch hitches part number C18110. .

Perfect. Took some finessing to tighten down the bolts but I did it on my own. I used it to move about 250lbs worth of belongings in containers from NY to FL (Little over 1,300 Miles). 555433

Easy to assemble. Reversed the bolts so the threads and nuts don't stick into a carrier bag. 221569

First of all etrailer service was speedy and delivery ahead of schedule. Absolutely would buy from them again. Packaging was flawless. Now to the product itself. As a disclaimer I have not used it with cargo on it yet. Assembly was easy and all pieces, nuts and bolts are included, with and adapter for 2" hitches. I decided on this product because the design with an sloped hitch connector allows for more ground clearance than other models. Now when I tried it on the 1 1/4 hitch, it wobbles, it fits somewhat loosely. Curt should made some sort of rubber washer/wedge to avoid this and not just require more strapping. For this I just giving this rack 3 stars. 529027

Considering the price, the product quality was above average from what I've seen. It will serve me well to carry a commercial pop up canopy that won't fit in the car. The instruction were easy to read and follow. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a third item from etrailer. Thanks 433781

This cargo carrier worked great. Used it to move a rototiller, 2 hour trip. No damage or deformation to the carrier despite the tiller being near the top of the weight limit. The hitch bolt held the carrier firmly in place. It doesn't come with the lights, I installed light kit Item # 52014. Just had to drill four small holes (I knew this light kit wasn't specifically designed for this carrier, just wanted something cheap). Works great on a Town Car, lots of ground clearance. I'm very happy with this product. 570243

I purchased this product to use in the 1 1/4" trailer hitch on my 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The item was easy to assemble, is of high quality, and is exactly as described. Being able to adjust the carrier in and out on the bar allows the carrier to be placed with just enough clearance of the vehicle to provide stability and thus avoiding the leverage effect when used with heavier loads. I ordered this item under time constraints, and etrailer worked with me to make sure the item arrived as quickly as possible, and followed up and kept me updated on the order progress along the way. I just recommended etrailer to a friend of mine and I found out that he was already a satisfied etrailer customer. 107376

I am so glad I ordered my cargo carrier from E-trailer.The package arrived on time and was exactly what I was looking for in a cargo carrier.I liked the easy to follow instructions as it only took 40 minutes to put together. This is my first order from E-trailer and I would not hesitate to order something again. The good service and quality products have given me peace of mind for my next order. Thanks E-trailer!! 317153

This is exactly what we needed to hold our cooler on camping trips. Is easy to install (note: can only use the threaded screw with the UHaul installed hitch we got) and easy to remove. Not too big to store (we get it in our 1-car garage, along with the car) in the winter. Like many folks, we were concerned about getting the rear hatch open on our Prius V and with the cooler mounted as far back as possible, we can! Would definitely buy again! 392396

Comments

Its continued to be a great add-on for our Prius V, allowing us to get the cooler out of the trunk to leave room for the dog.

As always from E Trailer very quick 2 day delivery to Minnesota, packaged well so no damage. It took very little time to put the Curt cargo carrier together, it is now installed on the rear 3 point of my John Deere 1025R and will use it mostly to haul firewood cutting tools, chainsaws, wedges, safety gear, chains, ropes and whatever else I need. I can now tie everything down and won't have to haul everything in the loader bucket. 231550

This works great, I have cut it down to only 48 wide so it would not catch on brush , I can still carry 2 chainsaws and gas and oil

Began shopping for a cargo carrier with 3 things in mind (a 2 inch shank, folding and have rails). I got none of the above with this carrier, however after doing my homework and using some common sense what I thought I wanted and what I needed were pretty far apart. I got this carrier primarily for a 2012 Honda Pilot 2WD. After reading many reviews here is why I decided on this model. 1. At 48 inch width, it fits nicely between the tail lights and doesn't obscure visibility of them. 2. The 3.75 inch shank rise puts the platform about level with the rear bumper and well above the tailpipes where heat seems to be an issue for many reviewers, especially if using a cargo bag which I am. 3. The shank rise also increases ground clearance which is not as important on the Pilot but is on our 2000Toyota Sienna and 2002 Winnie RV. The platform also rides about bumper level on these rather than riding below it as would a straight shank carrier. I didn't measure the height but these are med to light duty vehicles so passenger and cargo weight is a BIG factor in ground clearance. 4. The 300 lb cargo capacity is more than enough for our vehicles as none of them have tongue wt cap. >250 lb. I'm not sure about pushing the 300 lb. carrier capacity but it does take an evenly distributed 200 lbs. pretty well. 5. Despite the threaded hitch pin, I wasn't thrilled with the 1.25 in. shank as I have a bike rack with the same hitch connection but after viewing the cargo carrier review video I realized I had been putting the nylon insert between the shank and the receiver which left a bit of movement in the connection (not to mention squashing the insert). I flipped it around, now with the shank against the hitch (metal to metal) this is really solid. Thanks etrailer!! A couple of the features I thought I wanted, foldability, didn't seem to get favorable reviews on the models in my price range and rails (with the cargo bag is not really necessary) I believe are available for this carrier, if not would be very easy handyman project. Overall, very happy with the product so far. Its well built and the cargo bag fits perfect. I will be adding some reflector tape for sure, maybe lights if necessary. The best way to get what you want is to know what you need. Glad I did the research! 268025

I just returned home from a beach trip with my new cargo carrier. Overall it performed as needed. Having installed this on my 2006 Toyota Corolla I am happy I purchased a carrier with a rise in the shaft (raises the platform approximately 3" above the hitch insert). The carrier lightly scraped the ground a couple of times when pulling out of steeper parking lots onto the main road. Assembly took about 45 minutes doing this alone. Make sure you follow the directions and don't tighten the bolts the entire way, but make sure you tighten them enough that the square part of the bolt head will not fall out of the square hole or you run the risk of not being able to properly seat the bolts as you begin tightening all of the other bolts. I was slightly disappointed by the hitch pin. This does not use a standard slip through hitch pin and a standard pin will not fit. It instead has a threaded pin (included) that you need a 19mm socket (or box wrench) to tighten. I was hoping to use my Master Lock locking hitch pin, but was unable to because it was too large to fit through the threaded part of the carrier. There is a hole at the end of the threaded hit pin for a cotter pin so you may be able to put a small luggage zipper type lock in there for added security. The other disadvantage to the need for a socket is you need to take one with you on your trip if you plan to remove the cargo carrier, which I did for daily driving during the week around town. So again, overall it performed as needed and I would recommend this to a friend, but would make sure I pointed out the hitch pin setup as I don't think most people would expect this. 145659

Its threaded so you dont have to watch your cargo bounce side to side and it makes for a quiter ride because the rack is on with the hitch. You can get a threaded hitch pin with lock too.

The carrier has worked very well and I use it regularly. I recently purchased a new vehicle with a 2 receiver so it was nice to be able to just use the included adapter and not have to buy a new carrier. I mentioned the hitch pin as a downside, but after use it really is not. I purchased a cheap luggage lock to minimize the chance of theft. I also picked up a really cheap 19mm wrench to keep in the car so taking the hitch pin in and out is no problem. I would definitely recommend this product. It has held up very well despite my frequent, rough use.

Product came with clear directions to assemble. Seems to be of good quality. Was hoping it would be made in the USA (did not check) like the Curt hitch I bought, but it was not. Not the end of the world. Only reason I am taking it down a notch is the mesh metal in the center bends a bit, not much but with ~155 lbs. on it I can get it to bend. But I will never have more than ~250 on it so it will work. Good for the price. 516758

This cargo carrier is sturdy and works well on a Mazdaspeed 3. The rise and slight angle make it so clearance is not an issue. The carrier is very easy to put together. I did install the 8 bolts through the connecting plates in reverse of the instructions so cargo would not be scratched or torn. It adds so much cargo space for our growing family. The only drawbacks are a lack of license plate frame and reflectors which are easily added with very little cost. I used a Cruiser license mount plate with zip ties and Reese DOT approved reflectors. I don't plan to use the carrier at night but there are many license plate lights that can be added as well. I also purchased the Rola carrier bag for hauling luggage and other indoor items. 409245

I used the Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier to extend the luggage capacity of my 2010 Toyota Matrix. I had the hitch put on at Uhaul which would have been great but it rubbed against the exhaust pipe. They were great and offered to pay $30 toward a Midas Muffler service ticket to bend the exhaust slightly. The Carrier was fairly simple to assemble but required a 17 and 19 mm socket to assemble quickly. The carrier rode smoothly for over 400 miles and I was pleased I had no issues with it. The Matrix had no problems with the added weight. 158299

Etrailer provided excellent service and was great at recommending this cargo carrier. This cargo carrier was perfect for my 2011 Toyota Corolla with a 1 1/4 hitch. This cargo carrier not only fits without an adapter (much safer and can carry the load better), but it also is elevated over the hitch by another 4-5 inches to give greater clearance and it moves the cargo carrier away from the exhaust pipe. I worried about the heat from the exhaust pipe previously. This was easy to assemble and install (about 30 minutes). About 6 main parts + some bolts. Easy to install. I'm going to use this for a cross country road trip. 394897

I wanted to let you know that both the hitch and carrier arrived and I have already installed them both. They are awesome! Shipping was fast and the box arrived in great condition. The video you have on your site helped out tremendously. I didn't have the use of a lift, but had a jack and two jack stands. It was a little difficult that way, but still doable. 602169

Well made product. We are going to use it on our Ford Fusion Hybrid for our trip to Florida. Just need a little more space for mother in laws walker and some beach chairs We wont need it coming back north so I can take it apart and stack it in the trunk for the return trip. I am going to add reflectors and maybe flags to this carrier just to make it more visible to other drivers. It is low to the ground. Yes the support arm is installed correctly, sweeping up. 598167

DOES WHAT IT SAYS BUT... NEEDS REFLECTIVE ELEMENT. EITHER REFLECTIVE TAPE OR REFLECTIVE BADGES LIKE ON BICYCLES. i WOULD PREFER LESS ASSEMBLY AND A MORE LEVEL PLATFORM. 596076

Quick delivery. Purchased for small receiver sizing. “Basket” is lighter than my Harbor Freight aluminum platform, hardware for this unit preferable. Added flat washers under all nuts, think they should have been provided for the off round holes on the cross braces. Hauled an exercise bike which weighed well under the 300 pound weight but was not balanced and noticed after unloading balance is important to the use of the basket. Hitch on vehicle was etrailer buy, believe it is also a Curt manufacture. If I had see this unit prior to purchase would have bought it. Project it to be reasonable value for the price. 586268

We got this for a week-long camping trip with 4 people, and it worked great for us. I had all of our gear in 2 large rubbermaid bins strapped to the platform. It was stable and secure and no problems with clearance under it (we were on fairly flat paved and gravel roads). The only mod i did was to add reflective tape to the back edge for additional visibility. It's a perfect width for our Honda Fit, no problems maneuvering or parking. 539448

Great product for the money. Easy to put together. I will be using mostly with a 1-1/4" receiver and I bought specifically because of the receiver hitch pin (19mm wrench required) that screws into the tongue to make the assembly rigid when fastened to the hitch mount. It works great and secures to the vehicle nicely. It should work great for picking up extra passengers at the airport. It will be mounted to a Subaru Outback (2017) with factory supplied receiver. 484614

Pretty easy to put together. The cage is only welded to the frame in a few spots, which I think is strong enough, but it allows the unwelded contact points to rattle like crazy. I ended up using a dab of silicone calk to keep the rest from being annoying. I am using this rack to carry around my 65lb Paramotor and it works great. The "pin" hole is threaded all the way through which does make it a little annoying to screw in and out the pin bolt to install/remove the rack. But, the bolt does do its job keeping the cage from moving at all insite the hitch point. I am really satisfied with my purchase. 461066

I needed the rack as soon as I got it, but 'lo and behold', the assembly packet was missing two of the main parts.... The "connecting plates". The company was very nice and put the parts in the mail at no cost to me. So here I sit with a product I can't use for a few more days. I'll have a better idea of the product once I get to use it. The product seems a little light weight. More like a camping grill. 427299

Ask the Experts about this Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier
Do you have a question about this Hitch Cargo Carrier?

  • Is a 1-1/4 to 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter Recommended for Use with a 2 inch Cargo Carrier
  • I would discourage the use of an adapter for use of 2 inch accessories in 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receivers. The reason is that the adapter places the carrier farther away from the rear of the vehicle and hitch, creating additional torque that 1-1/4 inch hitches, especially Class I hitches, are not designed to handle. For this reason all 1-1/4 to 2 inch hitch adapters decrease the hitch or vehicle tongue weight capacity, whichever is lowest, by 50 percent, making a class one hitch only...

This means Class II accessories will not slide all the way in and the hitch pin holes will not line up preventing you from inserting the pin and clip. You will not be able to use the Class II cargo carrier in the Class I hitch. We do have three cargo carriers that will fit your hitch, Curt part # C18110, Curt part # C18145, and Surco part # 52017. I will link them below.

  • Options For Securing Items In Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
  • Although nothing is completely theft-proof when placed in an open cargo carrier like part # C18110, you can take some measures to make it a lot tougher for thieves. If the cargo can be placed in one container or bag like the Rola Expandable Cargo Bag, part # 59102, that can deter would-be thieves from taking anything because it is tougher to get to. Another option is to use some locking straps like part # RRRTD35L. These are 1-inch wide and 11-1/2 ft long and comes with locks and...

  • RV Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendations to Allow Transporting 190-lb Generator
  • We offer two varieties of trailer hitch receivers for use on RVs, the bolt-on 4-1/2 x 4-inch-bumper-mount type such as the Ultra-Fab 2-Inch Motor Home Trailer Hitch Receiver # UF35-946401 that you referenced, and the higher-capacity multi-fit frame-mount type like the Curt # C13701. I suggest you check your RV owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding the use of bumper- or frame-mount hitches and accessories. For safety and capacity I suggest a frame-mount hitch for your...

  • Are There Any Driving Speed Limitations When Using a Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier
  • I am not aware of any laws regarding altered driving speed limits when a cargo carrier is in use, but it is simple enough to check your local or state laws. Your local highway patrol can likely provide confirmation if there are any such laws in place in your area. Hitch-mounted cargo carriers such as the 20 x 48-inch Curt # C18110 for 1-1/4-inch hitch receivers do have weight limits, just as your vehicle trailer hitch receiver does. This carrier is rated for up to 300-lbs maximum...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2015 VW Jetta TDI
  • Curt Manufacturing has determined that their Class I hitch, part # C11410 is a confirmed fit for the 2015 Jetta TDI, unless it's the Hybrid model. For a cargo carrier, I'd recommend the Curt # C18110. The carrier measures 20 x 48 inches, outside dimension and offers plenty of room for gear. Because of the limited 200 lb tongue weight capacity of the Class I hitch, you'll be limited to carrying two bikes. One of my favorite bike racks is the Kuat Beta, part # B202-114. The rack is rugged...

  • Hitch Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2015 Buick Encore
  • As long as your Mother-in-law's 2015 Buick Encore has a hitch installed on it like the Draw Tite part # 36554 she could easily install a hitch cargo carrier like our Curt, part # C18110, which is popular and has very positive reviews. This would be the carrier I would recommend because of the rise that is built into the shank which gives it great ground clearance. I attached a review video for you to check out as well.

  • How to Gain Ground Clearance For a Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier on a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander
  • To resolve your ground clearance issue with your cargo carrier, I would recommend getting a cargo carrier with a rise in the shank like the Curt Cargo Carrier, # C18110. I am not aware of a trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver that will fit on your 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander. One thing to keep in mind when using a hitch adapter to convert a 2 inch shank to a 1-1/4 inch receiver is that the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch will be reduced by 50 percent. Like you stated, I...

  • Curt 18110 compared to 18140
  • First lets talk about a hitch for your 2007 Toyota Prius, I would recommend the Draw Tite hitch part # 24808. The reason for this is that Curt recommends you use a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 when you use a non-supported load on the hitch like a cargo carrier. Draw Tite doesn't have that requirement so I think you would be happier with the # 24808. Now the differences between the Curt Cargo Carriers part # C18110 and the # C18145 are pretty substantial. I personally like the #...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for 2018 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible to Transport Electric Bikes
  • The linked page will show you both of the light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches that will fit the 2018 Beetle Convertible, Curt hitch # C11354 and Draw-Tite # 24922. Both share the same capacities but the Curt hitch warranty policy also requires you to use their hitch support strap # 18050 when using a static load like a bike rack. For this reason I suggest the Draw-Tite hitch unless you prefer a USA-made Curt hitch and don't mind using the strap. However, it's not a bad idea to use...

These offer identical weight capacities and a similar installation process, which is shown for you in the linked video. • Using MaxxTow # MT70355 Adapter with Draw-Tite Class II Hitch # 36336 on 2003 Toyota Camry
  • Your best bet would be to use a cargo carrier designed for a 1-1/4 inch hitch that has an angled shank to provide the additional ground clearance you're looking for. I'd recommend the Curt # C18110, which is compatible with the Class II hitch you're interested in and features an angled shank that would provide over a 3 inch rise for improved ground clearance. • If your 2011 Toyota RAV4 has a 2-inch hitch receiver like Curt # C13149 then the Curt Folding Cargo Carrier # C18153 will fit the hitch and will clear the rear of the vehicle even when folded. The Curt cargo carrier # C18153 provides 9-inches of clearance from its hitch pin hole even when folded and this is plenty for your RAV4 even if it has the rear spare tire. In terms of weight capacity the lowest-rated item in the system, between the vehicle, hitch and carrier, determines the overall...

  • Towing a Boat Trailer and Using a Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier at the Same Time
  • Your best option would be to use the Curt multipurpose ball mount # D210. You would use the ball mount part to tow and the receiver part for a cargo carrier. This will work provided that the combined weight of the trailer tongue weight, cargo carrier, and cargo on the carrier does not exceed 750 pounds. For a carrier I recommend something that has a rise in the shank and that is light weight such as the Curt carrier # C18110. It weighs about 30 pounds and has a slight rise in the shank...

But these are available in two receiver sizes, both 1-1/4-inch like # 24914 from Draw-Tite and # C11377 from Curt, and also 2-inch like the EcoHitch # 306-X7305 that you referenced in your question. • Bike & Cargo Carrier Recommendations for 2016 Pleasureway Plateau FL Based on M-B Sprinter
  • We do offer 2-bike racks that tilt away or swing away from the vehicle to allow for better access to the rear cargo area. The thing is these racks are not rated for use on RVs like your M-B Sprinter-based Pleasureway. The reason bike racks must be rated specifically for use on an RV is the extra stresses found at the rear of such vehicles. The extra stress comes from the longer distance between the rear axle and bike rack; this longer distance translates into more vertical and lateral...
