I use this hitch on my 2018 Prius Prime. I’m very satisfied with the quality and workmanship that Yakima offers. It is strong and solid. The welds are precise and the blend of metals is perfect to keep the weight low. I paid $xx.xx for this rack and it’s well worth it. If you like quality at a price, buy this. It turns heads 821148

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in Hitch Bike Racks

Defective materials. Hitch bent in first mile. First I want to say that etrailer has been great! Yakima, however, was very disappointing. I have had other Yakima racks and they were fine. I spent a long time researching racks for 3 bikes and chose the Dr Tray rack. Installed rack per instructions and did a test with 3 bikes. I loaded the heaviest bike closest to car (37 lbs), middle bike next (35 lbs), and lightest bike on outside (30 lbs). All bikes were under the recommended max weight of 40 lbs each tray and 120 lbs total. I then did a test drive to end of the street about 1 mile. This includes going VERY slowly over 3 speed bumps. (Slower than in the video by etrailer!) I noticed the bikes were hanging significantly lower. I got out and checked the rack and noted that the rack had bent at the heavy metal part that goes into the hitch receiver on my car. (See attached pictures). It also bent the tightening mechanism on the hitch and I had difficulty getting the rack off the car. I have returned the rack to etrailer and contacted Yakima. This should definitely NOT have happened with such minimal stress. This is a SAFETY ISSUE for Yakima that needs to be fixed. I would not want put my expensive bikes on this rack at all! Very surprised that the heaviest metal part of the rack actually bent. BTW, I subsequently ordered the RockyMounts Monorail 3. It is WAY more solid and a great rack. It was also $300 less!! 804241

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in Hitch Bike Racks

I like the rack as loading my bikes is so much easier and they don't rub against each other or the back of my car. The only downside is the pin that goes through the receiver, it does not go all the way through the receiver which makes me a little uneasy as I'm afraid the rack could slide out of the receiver. The rack uses a different locking mechanism that works well but I'd like something a little more solid. I plan to install a small safety chain. 795239

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in Hitch Bike Racks

This is the first rack that I've owned that delivers on all fronts. Bought it to take our bikes on a 1,300 mile ride down to Florida and the stability of the bikes on the rack was terrific! The system really locks the bikes to the rack - no movement at all. Add to that the built in locking cables along with the "tilt down" feature to get into your vehicle and you have one great product. etrailer.com's price was very competitive and it shipped without any damage to the product. Highly recommend this rack! 584116

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in Hitch Bike Racks

Arrived earlier than expected. Easy to assemble using pictures and directions. First time E trailer user. Will use E trailer again if need arises!! Product much lighter than former hitch mount bike rack. Easier to put in place on car and remove, stores easier with less space, easier placement on and removal of bikes. Looking forward to many years of use as seems very well made with lighter aluminum materials. 529050

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in Hitch Bike Racks

The bike rack is super easy to install and hold bikes on it extremely well while you're driving. It's also super easy to load and unload your bike. The built in cables and locks were also easy to use..... So why 1 star? Well, we used it one time, one year ago. locked our bikes to the hitch and within a few the cables locking the bikes on had been cut and the bikes stolen. We lost a $2.500 bike and a $500 bike and the rack is useless without bikes and /or the ability to lock them to the rack. We don't live an a high crime area but we are in a city. Buy this only if you live in a low crime area in suburbia. 518968

Unfortunately, the best a lock can do is to keep honest people honest. If a thief is bound and determined to steal your items, theyll do it regardless of the steps taken to prevent it. The locks included with the rack are intended to provide deterrence, the average thief will move on to something thats easier to steal.

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in Hitch Bike Racks

Great value and this has been excellent so far. I ran into a problem that I've seen a few other people who have purchased this have issues with: the key included does not work in the hitch tightening knob. A quick call to Yakima customer support and I had a new cylinder and cylinder removal tool in my mailbox a couple days later. If I hadn't known about that problem going into it, I probably would have been a bit more frustrated. Mounting bikes on this is very easy, using the lock is relatively easy although the rubber guide blocks will stick in their channel if you're not pulling/pushing on them at the right angle (relatively shallow). It's also much easier to tilt this down and back up when loaded (at least with 1 bike on it) when compared to the hanging-style rack I used before. The tailgate on my "pickup" (2006 Avalanche) easily clears the bike when the platform is in the lowered position. 410198

Ive been happily using this rack for the last year and its been holding up well. I did notice the ratcheting arms got a bit difficult to release - a good cleaning and they feel better. A friend of mine also picked up the Thule T2 Pro XT, which Ive used a couple times. The Yakima is just as functional, but fit and finish and ease-of-use is better on the Thule. That said, the Yakima is MUCH lighter, so if you take it on and off your vehicle a lot thats a worthwhile consideration. Is it worth the cash to go up to the T2 Pro? I dont know. Id have a hard time justifying it, unless I used the rack a lot and wasnt taking it on and off the vehicle much. In my case, I use the rack once or twice a week at most and typically leave it on my SUV, so Im somewhere in the middle. Happily sticking with my Yakima.

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Hitch Bike Racks

  • Can Yakima 1-1/4-Inch Dr. Tray Y02474 Bike Rack Be Used in 2-Inch Hitch with Reducer Sleeve HT02
The Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Platform Rack # Y02474 is made to fit into a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch (but does NOT fit into a Class I hitch of the same size). If your vehicle has a 2-inch hitch receiver you can use the Dr. Tray rack by first installing a hitch reducer sleeve # HT02 into the 2-inch hitch and then installing the rack into the sleeve's 1-1/4-inch opening. I confirmed with my Yakima contact that this is fine to do. You may care to lock the sleeve to your hitch using pin lock...

  • Distance From Center of Hitch Pin Hole to Closest Part of Yakima Dr. Tray Bike Rack
The Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Platform Rack # Y02474 measures just 4-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack; I'm not sure how much room you need but that is a pretty tight fit. If you need more clearance from the hitch pin hole to the edge of your bumper there is a similar rack to the Dr. Tray which I recommend checking out, the Kuat NV 2.0 # BA12B, which as you can see by the accompanying cutout of Kuat's dimensions for this rack is just over 7" from...

  • Yakima Dr. Tray 2 Bike Platform Wheelbase Range
I checked with Yakima and the wheelbase range for the Yakima Dr. Tray part # Y02474 is 48 inches and the minimum is right at 34 but there's a bit of wiggle room on that end. Tire width max for this rack is 5 inches.

  • Weight Difference Between 1-1/4-Inch and 2-Inch Versions of Yakima Dr. Tray Bike Carriers
You are correct that the 1-1/4-inch version of the Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Platform Rack, part # Y02474, is heavier than the 2-inch version # Y02473. This is a good observation on your part. The reason why is that the smaller 1-1/4-inch shank version uses a solid-steel shank while the 2-inch version's steel shank is hollow. This additional material accounts for the higher weight of the 1-1/4-inch model. All bike racks with a 1-1/4-inch shank will use solid construction since a hollow...

  • Recommended Bike Rack to Haul Bacchetta Recumbent Bikes on a 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
I do have some solutions for you to carry a couple of recumbent bikes with your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon, but if you have the OEM 1-1/4 inch hitch that has the hitch pin hole 1 inch away from the receiver opening, then you will only have one option for a bike carrier. If you by chance have an aftermarket trailer hitch receiver, like the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75673, then you will have a little more freedom in what bike rack to choose from. Since the pin hole being 1 inch away from the...

  • What's Difference Between 3-Bike Yakima Dr. Tray # Y02474-02475 and 2 Bike Version with Add On
The 3-bike Yakima Dr. Tray # Y02474-02475 is literally just the 2 bike version # Y02474 that comes with the add-on # Y02475. If you order it as a 2 bike plus the single track you'd be getting the same components so there really isn't an advantage to either way you'd want to order it.

  • Adapters to Allow Use of Yakima Dr. Tray Bike Racks in 1-1/4-Inch and 2-Inch Hitches
The Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Platform Rack # Y02474 that you referenced is made for 1-1/4-inch Class II hitches and it can be used in a 2-inch hitch by adding a hitch reducer sleeve like # HT02. The sleeve slides into the hitch and drops its opening size down to 1-1/4-inches to match this rack. The other versions of the Dr. Tray are made for 2-inch hitches, 2-bike version # Y02473 and 3-bike version # Y02473-02475, and these cannot directly fit into smaller 1-1/4-inch hitch receivers. • Racks Compatible with a OEM/Factory Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
The Subaru OEM Trailer Hitch is indeed a lot shorter than other trailer hitches, with only one inch from the hitch pin hole to the end of the receiver, limiting your options. One that we've had success with in the past on a Subaru OEM hitch is the Kuat Beta, part # B202-114 . This rack is extremely lightweight at 12.6 lbs and a total capacity of 40 pounds per bike, meaning you don't have to sacrifice strength for the weight. For a bike rack, the Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Platform Rack # Y02474 is a great choice, using large ratcheting hooks for mounting your bikes to the rack without frame contact. It also folds up neatly for storage when not in use and will look great on your Jetta TDI. Included are...

  • Needing A Platform Bike Rack That Will Allow The Tailgate of a Nissan Frontier to be Lowered
Either the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack, # SH22G, or the Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Rack, # Y02473, will work with your 2015 Nissan Frontier and allow you to lower the tailgate with no bikes mounted. Both of the racks' ratcheting hook arms will fold down against the bike rack. So, in the tilt position you will have plenty of clearance to open the tailgate of your Nissan. Other than that similarity, I would recommend the Dr.Tray bike rack over the Sherpa rack. The Dr.Tray will be able to carry...

  • Recommended 2-Bike Platform Rack for 2017 Honda CR-V with 1-1/4-Inch Hitch
The 1-1/4-inch factory hitch on your 2017 Honda CR-V is likely to be a Class II so you'll want to check its safety sticker or your owner's manual to confirm. This matters because Class I and Class II hitches do not always both work with the same bike racks and the two hitch classes have very different weight capacities, usually 350-lbs tongue weight (TW) for a Class II but only 200-lbs TW for a Class I. If you have a Class II hitch then I suggest the Yakima Dr.Tray 2 Bike Platform Rack...

I have a much easier solution for you than making the type of modification you were asking about. Instead of doing that, you can simply add the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HT02, which will turn the 2" receiver on your 2018 Nissan Rogue into a 1-1/4" receiver and will allow you to install your Yakima Dr.Tray # Y02474 with a 1-1/4" shank. • Trailer Hitch Receiver Mounted Bike Rack for a 2005 Volvo V70
Your best option for avoiding ground contact with a hitch mounted rack will be a platform style rack with a large or offset rise. This means the distance from the shank where the rack connects to the hitch and where the bikes actually sit is much higher than normal. There are a few great racks that have these kinds of offsets. I recommend the Class lll because there are many more accessories for 2-inch receivers available that there are for 1-1/4 inch Class l or Class ll hitches.
