Video Transcript for Yakima Dr Tray 3 Bike Platform Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima Dr.Tray 3-bike platform rack for 1-1/4" hitches, part number Y02474-02475. The Yakima Dr.Tray 3-bike rack is a platform-style bike rack that grips your bikes by the wheel hook up at the front and the wheel strap at the rear, not requiring any frame contact. Therefore, it can carry a wide variety of bikes, such as fat bikes, mountain bikes, and road bikes, and most alternate frame bikes as well. It also keeps your bike secure with this integrated locking strap. One of the best features about this bike rack is that it can tilt away from the vehicle with all the three bikes still attached to get rear hatch access. To do that we have this light gray handle up at the front. What you'll do is you'll pull it towards you like so and then let it tilt down.

Now we have full hatch access. Both the wheel tray at the front and at the rear are both extra wide to make loading much easier, and can accommodate tires up to 5" wide. The rear wheel tray is pivoting so it can accommodate bikes of different sizes as well. We went ahead and removed the bikes to show off some more features about the bike rack, the first being you can actually convert this to just a 2-bike rack by simply removing this end tray here. To do so you'll remove these four bolts and set it aside. Another nice feature about this bike rack is that these two trays here are adjustable side to side as well as front to back. To do that you'll lift up these two gray handles like so. You can slide them back and forth as needed.

This is to help accommodate loading and unloading. Right now we have it in the loading position, but you can also fold this up against the vehicle for those close quarter situations such as parking or putting it in your garage. Again, you come to the gray handle at the front, pull it towards you, and push up. When installing this into your vehicle, it's pretty much a tool-free install. You'll push it into the shank, push the gray pin, and then tighten the speed knob at the end to take out the shake and play. Then you can lock this into place and it will just free-spin and be secure on your vehicle. The speed knob at the end as well as the integrated cable locks are all keyed alike. Now we can pull down our bike rack to the loading position.

We'll just pull it up like so and let it come down. Then we'll unfold our wheel hook. To do that you bring it up and you push this gray button down, pull it out all the way. We'll bring out our integrated cable lock and we'll undo our rear wheel strap by pushing the tab at the top. Now we'll get our first bike. We'll put the front tire in our front cradle, set it down at the rear section as well.

We'll bring up our wheel hook and push it down as far as it can go. Now we'll go to our wheel strap. Our final step is to install our integrated cable lock, and then we'll repeat this process for our other two bikes. Now that we got all of our bikes installed and secure, now we can show you how it looks on our test course. First we'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side to side action such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the alternating speed bumps. This will show you how it looks driving on uneven pavement or potholes. Finally, we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lots. There you have it for the Yakima Dr.Tray 3-bike platform rack, part number Y02474-02475.

I use this hitch on my 2018 Prius Prime. I’m very satisfied with the quality and workmanship that Yakima offers. It is strong and solid. The welds are precise and the blend of metals is perfect to keep the weight low. I paid $xx.xx for this rack and it’s well worth it. If you like quality at a price, buy this. It turns heads 821148

Love our Dr Tray bike rack! Easy to mount on the car and easy to load bikes on to. Easily folds up and down to get into the back of the vehicle. Very happy with our purchase. 545271

Arrived earlier than expected. Easy to assemble using pictures and directions. First time E trailer user. Will use E trailer again if need arises!! Product much lighter than former hitch mount bike rack. Easier to put in place on car and remove, stores easier with less space, easier placement on and removal of bikes. Looking forward to many years of use as seems very well made with lighter aluminum materials. 529050

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in RV and Camper Bike Racks

When I ordered the bike rack it was indicated online it would arrive in 4 days. 4 days later I checked to see the status and found it had been delayed by two weeks since it was not in stock. I called and expressed my disappointment in etrailer showing it in stock when it was not. They apologized and indicated an mistake in their inventory management and said they would try to expedite it if possible. I was VERY IMPRESSED that 4 days later they shipped it and I did not have to wait an additional two weeks. I was impressed their admission of error, their apology and their attention to my concern and their response to try to help if possible. The bike rack was easy to install, had excellent instructions and seems very solid and well built. I have only tested it around the block but it seems sturdy, east to mount bikes, adjustable to suit the bikes and I look forward to taking on a excursion later this week. 898410

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in RV and Camper Bike Racks

Defective materials. Hitch bent in first mile. First I want to say that etrailer has been great! Yakima, however, was very disappointing. I have had other Yakima racks and they were fine. I spent a long time researching racks for 3 bikes and chose the Dr Tray rack. Installed rack per instructions and did a test with 3 bikes. I loaded the heaviest bike closest to car (37 lbs), middle bike next (35 lbs), and lightest bike on outside (30 lbs). All bikes were under the recommended max weight of 40 lbs each tray and 120 lbs total. I then did a test drive to end of the street about 1 mile. This includes going VERY slowly over 3 speed bumps. (Slower than in the video by etrailer!) I noticed the bikes were hanging significantly lower. I got out and checked the rack and noted that the rack had bent at the heavy metal part that goes into the hitch receiver on my car. (See attached pictures). It also bent the tightening mechanism on the hitch and I had difficulty getting the rack off the car. I have returned the rack to etrailer and contacted Yakima. This should definitely NOT have happened with such minimal stress. This is a SAFETY ISSUE for Yakima that needs to be fixed. I would not want put my expensive bikes on this rack at all! Very surprised that the heaviest metal part of the rack actually bent. BTW, I subsequently ordered the RockyMounts Monorail 3. It is WAY more solid and a great rack. It was also $300 less!! 804241

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in RV and Camper Bike Racks

I like the rack as loading my bikes is so much easier and they don't rub against each other or the back of my car. The only downside is the pin that goes through the receiver, it does not go all the way through the receiver which makes me a little uneasy as I'm afraid the rack could slide out of the receiver. The rack uses a different locking mechanism that works well but I'd like something a little more solid. I plan to install a small safety chain. 795239

This is the first rack that I've owned that delivers on all fronts. Bought it to take our bikes on a 1,300 mile ride down to Florida and the stability of the bikes on the rack was terrific! The system really locks the bikes to the rack - no movement at all. Add to that the built in locking cables along with the "tilt down" feature to get into your vehicle and you have one great product. etrailer.com's price was very competitive and it shipped without any damage to the product. Highly recommend this rack! 584116

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in RV and Camper Bike Racks

The bike rack is super easy to install and hold bikes on it extremely well while you're driving. It's also super easy to load and unload your bike. The built in cables and locks were also easy to use..... So why 1 star? Well, we used it one time, one year ago. locked our bikes to the hitch and within a few the cables locking the bikes on had been cut and the bikes stolen. We lost a $2.500 bike and a $500 bike and the rack is useless without bikes and /or the ability to lock them to the rack. We don't live an a high crime area but we are in a city. Buy this only if you live in a low crime area in suburbia. 518968

Unfortunately, the best a lock can do is to keep honest people honest. If a thief is bound and determined to steal your items, theyll do it regardless of the steps taken to prevent it. The locks included with the rack are intended to provide deterrence, the average thief will move on to something thats easier to steal.

Review from a similar Dr.Tray in RV and Camper Bike Racks

Great value and this has been excellent so far. I ran into a problem that I've seen a few other people who have purchased this have issues with: the key included does not work in the hitch tightening knob. A quick call to Yakima customer support and I had a new cylinder and cylinder removal tool in my mailbox a couple days later. If I hadn't known about that problem going into it, I probably would have been a bit more frustrated. Mounting bikes on this is very easy, using the lock is relatively easy although the rubber guide blocks will stick in their channel if you're not pulling/pushing on them at the right angle (relatively shallow). It's also much easier to tilt this down and back up when loaded (at least with 1 bike on it) when compared to the hanging-style rack I used before. The tailgate on my "pickup" (2006 Avalanche) easily clears the bike when the platform is in the lowered position. 410198

Ive been happily using this rack for the last year and its been holding up well. I did notice the ratcheting arms got a bit difficult to release - a good cleaning and they feel better. A friend of mine also picked up the Thule T2 Pro XT, which Ive used a couple times. The Yakima is just as functional, but fit and finish and ease-of-use is better on the Thule. That said, the Yakima is MUCH lighter, so if you take it on and off your vehicle a lot thats a worthwhile consideration. Is it worth the cash to go up to the T2 Pro? I dont know. Id have a hard time justifying it, unless I used the rack a lot and wasnt taking it on and off the vehicle much. In my case, I use the rack once or twice a week at most and typically leave it on my SUV, so Im somewhere in the middle. Happily sticking with my Yakima.

  • 3 or 4 Bike Hitch Mount Platform Bike Rack for 2007 Subaru Forester
Your 2007 Subaru Forester has a 1-1/4-inch Class II type hitch installed on it. Typically such hitches have a tongue weight (TW) capacity of 300-lbs, which means all the bikes plus the chosen carrier together cannot exceed that total weight. A great way to go is to use a rack with aluminum construction since this will be lighter than steel racks. For a 3-bike hitch rack compatible with your Class II hitch I suggest the Yakima Dr.Tray 3 Bike Platform Rack # Y02474-02475. This rack includes...

  • Is 2-Bike Yakima Dr.Tray with the EZ-1 Add-On the Same as the 3-Bike Dr.Tray
The pricing on all of our products does change from time to time but if it's more cost-effective to get the 2-bike version of the Yakima Dr.Tray, part # Y02474 for 1-1/4" shank or part # Y02473 for 2" shank, and purchase the EZ+1 Single-Bike Add-On # Y02475 separately, then that will totally work. Using the add-on with the 2-bike version will give you the same thing as the 3-bike version of the Dr.Tray, part # Y02474-02475 for 1-1/4" shank of part # Y02473-02475 for 2" shank. Attached...

The 3-bike Yakima Dr. Tray # Y02474-02475 is literally just the 2 bike version # Y02474 that comes with the add-on # Y02475. If you order it as a 2 bike plus the single track you'd be getting the same components so there really isn't an advantage to either way you'd want to order it.
