Video Transcript for Swagman Original Hitch Bike Rack Review

Today well be demonstrating the Swagman Original standard four bike rack for two inch hitches, part number S64400. The simple design on this four bike rack offers riders basic carrier functionality, and its steel construction provides lasting toughness. Its strong enough for the back of RVs and its Kraton cushioning helps to protect bike frames. The Kraton vinyl cushioning protects the frames and offers additional gripping power. The flexible top plate accommodates several different frame sizes. Well be installing it on an RV, so well go ahead and take the bike rack shank and slide it into the hitch and using the included anti-rattle bolt well secure it through the hitch pin hole.

With our bike rack secured we can move up the bike rack mast here to our cradles. The cradles are a one piece design for all four bikes. Well need to remove the three knobs holding the top plate on. With the three knobs removed we can simply pull up on the top plate, removing it from the bike rack. Youll then be able to see the Kraton cushioning here on both the top plate as well as on the bike rack base plate.

Well now go ahead and put our bike into the cradle closest to our vehicle. With the top tube of the bike resting in the cradle well now take our plate, place it back on top, over the top bar of our bike where we can then reinstall the three knobs and tighten them down. Be careful not to tighten them too tight as you can damage the frame of your bike. With all three knobs tight, our bike is secured to the bike rack. For further security there is a strap which is also included with the bike rack.

The strap has a metal hook here, which youll hook to the bike rack just behind the cradles here on this slot. With that hooked you can use the strap for several different purposes. One would be to wrap the bikes to further secure them to the bike rack, or two you can use the strap to further secure the bike rack to the vehicle. You simply take the strap and hook it back through the bumper, or hitch in this case and pull it tight. This offers a little more stability to the bike rack.

That is for our demonstration of the Swagman Original standard four bike rack, part number S64400.

Rack is stable but cotter pin to too weak, even thought the rack is bolted to hitch. The cotter pin should go through the bolt not around, just in case.Otherwise, great! 54223

Comments

I agree that the cotter pin is weak. Doesnt seem right that it goes around the pin, instead of going through the pin.

For what it is worth, we haven't seen around-the-pin clips fail any more than the throug-pin style. The nice thing about the around-the-pin style is that it can rotate and reduce the risk of bending the clip. With the through-pin, it is a lot easier to bend that clip.

Pretty good product but if you have are women's bikes to haul just save yourself the trouble and get a rack that wheel fit them without a adapter that you have to purchase separately 567562

So far, so good. It was shipped quickly, and it installed easily. I did take the advice of another reviewer and placed lock washers on to reduce the risk of loosening bolts. I had a welding professional look at the bumper to assure me that it was strong enough for the rack. I would say this is the most important step before anyone connects any rack to the back of a camper. 44397

I have been using this rack for a couple of seasons. Maybe a total of about five trips with the bikes mounted behind my trailer to a "CURT 4" BUMPER RECEIVER". I was so happy that I found a system to carry four bikes on my trailer. However the last trip that I used this product I lost all four bikes on Interstate 95. The pin/bolt sheered and I was dragging the bikes for a few miles before I realized what had happened. The situation was extreemly dangerous. I had to get out of my tow vehicle on the highway and disassemble the mangled bikes. I have come to realize that carrying bikes behind your trailer is very dangerous and this product is not adequate to do the job. I feel that the manufacturer should not be recommending to their customers that this product can be mounted behind a trailer. Please do your research before mounting or carrying anything behind your trailer. 30017

Some advice to anyone who may be using this rack. Please note that the weight limit is 35lbs. per bike. Always load the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle or trailer and the lightest bike on the cradle furthest from the vehicle.

Had a bad experience with this product myself. Installed a trailer hitch on the back of my Fifth Wheel so I could use this rack. I put four mountain bikes on this rack and drove 145 miles. got out of the truck and the vertical bar had bent about five inches and bikes were all scratched up and heading for the pavement. product not strong enough for trailer usage.

seems like a no-nonsense heavy-built rack. Exactly what I wanted. The four bolts that hold the frame together seem to be strong tempered steel, which is great. And the clamps for the bike seem very strong and simple too. But the pin bolt, which everyone complains about, seems like it's indeed a weak point. I never trust simple clips to hold a pin in. And the pin is actually a bolt with threads. If you thread it in, it defeats the purpose of the bolt being loose so it can float around. And I would expect the stress to be greater on the threaded side, causing the bolt to bend. And anyways, vibration will eventually loosen the threads on the bolt and now you're hoping the catch pin holds. I ordered a heavy duty locking pin. I think it's a great bike rack, but they should really sell it without the pin, which gives it negative reviews. The price is decent without a pin. 208910

I purchased this bike rack to be used on the back of our motorhome less than 10 days before we were to leave for vacation thinking that it would never be here in time. According to the information I found on the etrailer.com website, this is the rack that was recommended for a motorhome. The ordering process was simple, the rack was delivered promptly and we used it to carry 4 bikes on vacation, about 900 miles. It slipped into to trailer hitch and I used one strap to secure it. The rack did not sway or move during travel. I would recommend it to a friend and I would recommend etrailer.com, also. 208294

I needed a bike rack that I could mount on the back of our travel trailer. I reinforced the bumper and welded a 2" receiver on. I looked for a rack that could carry 4 bikes and was strong enough to handle being on the back of the travel trailer without breaking the bank. I ordered this rack based on the fact it was recommended for use on the back of RVs. I called on a Sunday and spoke to an actual person! I needed to know if it would arrive before a trip on the following Friday, which it did. The box was slightly damaged but the rack itself was not. I don't have much experience with racks but it seems this thing is very well built. Nothing fancy. Assembly was easy and quick. At first I was concerned about how far from the back of the trailer the bikes wound up, but it allows for the spare tire to still be mounted to the bumper with bikes on the rack. I loaded up a large tube aluminum frame bike and my son's BMX bike with no issues. I like the grooves in the rubber holders as my bike has the cables running underneath. We made a 300 mile camping trip with no issues. The clamping plate that holds the bikes down remained tight and held the bikes securely. The only thing I noticed was after returning home, the anti-rattle pin had loosened somewhat. I had torqued it down to the requirements called out for in the instructions (40 ft-lbs I believe), it might just be the fact it's new or maybe a lockwasher will do the trick. Nonetheless, I'm very please with this unit. Simple, strong and well-built. 27807

The bike rack is very substantial. I assembled it in less than 10 min. I took in on my first trip today loaded with 2 adult bikes and 1 children’s bike although I had to mount 1 of the bikes upside down they all stayed secure with no scratches. I am very pleased! 655477

My only concern is that because we are going to use on our fifth wheel, it would be nice to be able to have choices on where you could put the connecting pin. It still appears to be far from the trailer. This is my second swagman, my other is over 20 years old and just broke on the way to our winter destination. I am wondering if I could have an additional hole drilled into the steel? 620371

This is a solid and well-engineered bike rack. I bought it because of the design. I need a bike rack to carry in the back of my pickup truck along with luggage on trailer trips. Bikes go on a rack I leave on the back of the trailer. When trailer is parked and we're ready to go biking I'll pull this new rack out of the pickup truck bed and put in on the truck. More convenient than my other racks, one of which is an extremely heavy platform style rack and the other one which has two upper support arms which doesn't fit well in the pickup bed along with the other items. This one lays flat, taking up minimal space. 121522

This rack worked perfectly. It had plenty of clearance between my tailgate and itself. I also bought the leveling bars for each bike and they also worked perfectly. They made bike even with the top of the tailgate and I could only see some of the handlebars. There was no excess movement to cause me any distractions while driving. It’s made out of heavy duty steel tubing and easily held the weight of our bikes. It was super easy to put together and attach to my hitch. You will probably need a 2.5 - 2 in. reducer like I did. Overall, this was a great product. I’d recommend it to anyone. 561184

Product is better and sturdier than I expected. I was shocked at how fast it shipped. It was extremely well packaged. I have not seen this type of care in shipping for a long time. I am very happy with the product especially at the price. It had several features I was looking for: 1. It is rigid to the hitch with no flopping. 2. The bikes can be securely locked to the carrier. 3. The unit can easily be locked to the hitch (with the additional locking bolt that I would recommend purchasing. 4. When not in use it can easily be stored FLAT in the storage area of my RV without taking up a lot of room. I would highly recommend etrailer and this bike carrier. I will be doing additional business with etrailer in the future! 485523

I used it to haul my bike down to Florida from Minnesota on the back of my RV. With the base being screwed tight to the hitch it traveled with zero problems. Very heavily built. Stores flat against the wall in the storage area underneath. I am extremely pleased with this product!

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

Very, very heavy. When you put your bike on the rack, the bike hangs very low. I have a Honda CRV and put my women's bike on the rack. When I drive over even a little teenie bump, the tires of the bike have hit the road and bent the bike. I will never buy this again. There is no way to adjust the height of the pipe coming out of the hitch. Terrible design. Very, very, very heavy. And I do not have a fancy bike but I was on the Interstate and hit a little tiny bump......at 55 miles per hour, it bent my entire tire and rim! Cost me over $100 to fix it. Never again. Only a child's bike will work on this. DO NOT BUY this bike rack. 573861

Comments

It sounds like you need an adapter bar to keep the bikes level on the bike rack. The adapter bar will give the bike a level hanging surface so they are not crooked on the bike rack. It should help them from hanging too low and creating ground clearance issues. I recommend the Kuat adapter bar part # UB01
Kuat Ubar Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's and Alternative Frame Bikes
$35.00
because it extends from 15 inches to 23 inches so it will work on adult womens bikes and childrens bike frames.

I missed two points when I ordered this bike rack ... 1 is that it is extremely heavy to lift and 2 the obvious but I missed it that the rack does not drop down ... like other racks I now own I was focused on the screw down holder which looks to be fine ... even for bikes I own that have different size cross bars The rack does sway from left to right ... just like my other racks ... great opportunity for Reese or someone to make a anti sway bar that would anchor on the vehicle hitch and connect to the vertical bike rack bar .. with a simple disconnect so the rack can be tilted Great service as usual from the people at eTrailer 262463

It is a tough bike rack which I can use with my travel trailer. I would give it 5 stars but the rack does not swing down for unloading. However, I don't think there is rack suitable for a travel trailer which also swings down. E-trailer shipped the bike rack in a timely fashion and the rack is exactly as advertised. 514534

Comments

We do not have any bike racks that are travel trailer approved that swing away or down. If the bike rack is rated for motorhome, 5th wheel or camper use they have a fixed stinger that goes into the hitch receiver to avoid any excessive bouncing. We do have the Swagman trailhead part # S63381
Swagman Trailhead 4-Bike Rack for 2" Hitches - Non-Folding
$195.00
. This is a 4 bike rack where the arms fold down for storage but the whole rack does not tilt down or fold.

We ordered the Roadmaster dual hitch extension and the Swagman 3-bike rack for our Motorhome. We tow a vehicle and had our bikes on the back of our tow. They partially blocked our tow vehicle’s brake lights. We opted to get this assembly to attach to the coach and still be able to flat tow our vehicle. Assembly was easy, you will need two 5/8 hitch pins: 1 for the extension to the RV hitch and 1 to reattach your Blue Ox (or other flat tow assembly). Very sturdy construction. We are very pleased! 504673

I still like this product. It has held up pretty well, and remains a budget-friendly rack that is easy to use. I definitely like how I can take it off the car and not have it be in the way when I am not hauling my bikes with me. However, I wonder if I would have liked a roof rack better - when you load this rack up with bikes on a very lightweight car it becomes a boat sail of sorts and not only kills your MPG, it creates a different feel to your car as you drive down the road in windy conditions. What held me back from going to a roof rack was that I didnt want a permanent fixture on the top of my car - and I still dont, but I still wonder if I would like that type of rack better.

Derek - 05/14/2014

I am very happy to hear that you are pleased with your Swagman Hitch mounted bike rack. With the additional weight of the bikes loaded on the rack and on a smaller car it will make a difference in the handling, and it will have an decrease your MPG. However, using a roof mounted rack option is not as easy to remove (as you indicated), will also impact your aerodynamics and MPG. With the roof rack, and bikes loaded your mileage and handling will be significantly different (especially with crosswinds). Also, since you are carrying the bikes closer to the passenger area you will notice a significant difference in wind noise, even with the most aerodynamic bars, wind noise is still noticeable. I think your best bet is the hitch mounted bike rack option, but I would be happy to help you out if you need any other recommendations.

A friend gave us their bike rack to travel from NY to SC. It was so flimsy and loose we did not use it. I borrowed my son's once in SC (this model), and it was simple and worked extremely well. I bought the same for our next trip to SC. It holds the bikes firmly with easy ability to lock bikes onto the rack, I just need to purchase a locking hitch pin. One drawback is that it does not tilt so you can't access cargo without removing the rack. Otherwise a good value! 577632

Comments

The locking hitch pin you will need for this bike rack part # S64152-2 is swagman threaded hitch pin lock part # S64027. This swagman bike rack does not tilt away for cargo access. I recommend swagman trailhead hanging bike rack part # S63365 with the tilt away feature. The trailhead tilts forward to allow easy access to vehicles rear cargo area. You will still need part # S64027 for the lock.

Instead, the best option, assuming your pop-up camper is an A-frame, is to use the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer-Mounted Bike Rack Carrier for A-Frame Trailers # CC-275 with the Swagman Original - 4 Bike Rack...

  • Hitch Mount Bike Rack for 4-Bikes on the Back of a Travel Trailer Using Curt Bumper Hitch E-100
  • There are only certain bike racks that are rated for use on the back of an RV or trailer but the Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR is not one of them so I cannot recommend it. But there are several 4-bike racks that are rated for this application. You can use the Swagman Trailhead # S63381. This rack is most like the Thule. It features a 2-arm design and anti-sway cradles. It is a sturdy build to handle the riggers of being at the back of a trailer. Other racks that are rated for this...

  • 4-Bike Rack for Use on Deck of 4 x 6 Utility Trailer
  • You do have a unique bike transport requirement and I see why you came to etrailer! You are correct that bike carriers for use on utility trailers are rare animals. Truck bed racks like the 4-bike Topline # UG2500-4 might be usable - the bike wheels stay on - if you have or can create a place to secure the mounting clamp. Since it sounds like you are capable of some fabrication I do have a suggestion that is a little outside the box but that gives you the flexibility to choose a...

  • Swagman once manufactured bike racks for Reese and Hidden Hitch. The Outfitter model was one of those bike racks. If you have the 3 bike version, then you will use the Replacement Top Plate for Hidden Hitch Bike Rack # SP-102 if you have 5 inch measurements on center for the padding. For just the knob if you want to keep a spare on hand, you will need part # P1004. If you have the 4 bike, you will use the Replacement Top Plate for Swagman Original Series 4 Bike Carriers # P113. • 4-Bike Carriers for Travel Trailer with Rear-Mounted Spare Tire
  • The Swagman 4 Bike RV Bike Carrier # S80600 will not provide enough clearance for your rear-mounted spare tire and still allow 4 bikes to be loaded unless your rear bumper extends well beyond the back of the spare tire. The linked page displays all of the RV-rated 4-bike racks we offer, most of which are hitch-mount types such as the Swagman Original 4, part # S64400. I have owned the 3-bike version for several years and it is a solidly-made product that has held up well for us. You...

  • Hitch Bike Rack with High Weight Capacity Suitable for Use on Motorhome
  • Any accessory carrier such as a hitch bike rack or hitch cargo carrier that is to be used on an RV, either a motorhome, trailer or camper, has to be built with reinforcement to withstand the extra stresses found at the rear of such RVs. The extra stresses come about due to the typically greater distance between the rear axle and hitch tube on such vehicles, as compared to that distance on a passenger car. The greater the distance between the two, the more leverage and movement there...

  • Recommended RV Hitch and RV Hitch Bike Racks
  • We offer hitch receivers for use on RVs that you can see on the linked page. Both bumper-mount and frame-mount type hitches are made and it will be a good idea to check with your trailer's manufacturer to confirm which type is best for your particular RV. Examples of both types are parts # C19101 which fits 4 x 2-inch bumpers (as long as they are NOT a C-channel type) and # UF35-946403 which fits trailer frames between 47-1/8- and 77-inches wide (measured outside edge to outside edge). • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for Use at the Back of a Trailer
  • There are several racks that are designed for use behind a trailer but as you have stated, the Swagman XP 5 Bike Rack, # S64970, is one that cannot be used. Basically, the rack was not designed for this application. There is significantly more vertical and lateral movement at the back of a trailer when compared to the back of a vehicle and the XP is not made to handle the stress and damage to the rack, bikes, hitch, and trailer could occur. The bumper mount bike racks compatible with...

  • The manufacturer (Thule) does not recommend that any Thule hitch bike rack be used on a trailer or any other towed vehicle. So you will not want to use the Thule Hitch Bike Rack, # TH956, on your travel trailer. I do have a Swagman Original 4 Bike Rack, # S64400, that can be used on the back of a travel trailer. It will fit 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch trailer hitches. You will want to check the tongue weight capacity of the hitch on your trailer, so you will not exceed the specifications...

  • Recommended 4-Bike Rack for Toyota Highlander
  • Since you have 4 bikes to transport on your Toyota Highlander your best option is to use a 4-bike hitch-mount rack. There are no trunk-mount bike carriers that have a 4-bike capacity because such a rack would put too much weight on a car's rear hatch or trunk, and could potentially dent the trunk/hatch or damage the hinge. If your Highlander does not have a 2-inch Class III hitch installed on it you will need to put one on the car first. Since I do not know your Highlander's model year,...

  • Recommended Swagman Bike Rack for Use on Trailer
  • The most important aspect of the Swagman Trailhead # S63381, Original 3-bike # S64152-2, and Original 4-Bike # S64400 is that they are all rated and approved for use on a trailer like what you have. Because of the extra bounce and stress that is put on a bike rack at the back of a trailer when compared the back of a standard passenger vehicle, only some racks are designed for this use and these all meet that requirement. Between these three option, I recommend going with the Swagman...

  • Weld On Versus Bolt On Hitch Receiver for Use with Bike Racks and Cargo Carriers on RVs
  • In my opinion you are going in the right direction with a frame mounted receiver. The only advantage to a weld on application is that, if welded properly, the attachment point, weld, will be stronger than the hitch or trailer frame steel and one of those two would have to fail before the weld would break. Bolt on installations are easier to install and are rated for the same capacities as most of the weld on models, and many of the hitches offer both options. For bike racks and cargo...

But even with this feature, it is still possible, especially on the back of an RV or trailer, for the bikes to make some contact with each other. I could not determine if the Tow Tuff carrier is rated for this application but if I had to venture a guess based on design I would say that it isn't. For this type of bike a better option may be a bumper-mount rack or a hitch-mount rack. If your RV has a 4- to 4-1/2-inch continuously-welded steel bumper (not a spot welded or aluminum bumper) then you can use a bumper-mount carrier like the Swagman # S80605. This hitch offers a substantial 525-lb tongue weight rating (TW is downward force on the hitch from what is loaded on it). 2-inch hitches will give you a far better safety margin and also give you more choices of carrier. • Will a Hitch Mount Hanging Bike Rack Damage the Cables on a Trek Hybrid Bicycle
  • Using a hanging rack like the Standard 4 Bike Rack, # S64400, could put pressure on the cable. So while it is highly unlikely it will damage the cable, it is possible, but i have not heard of any problems like this occurring. • How to Transport 5 Bikes on Vehicle Towed Behind Motorhome
  • When selecting a hitch bike rack the "host" vehicle matters a lot. Most bike racks made for use on passenger cars cannot be used on RVs. Why? On most RVs and trailers the rear hitch will be much further away from the rear axle than on a car. This longer axle-to-hitch distance means more leverage will be applied to the hitch tube from the motion of the rack. Think of the example of adding a cheater bar to a tire iron to gain more leverage to loosen a lug nut. We do offer 5-bike hitch...
