Image Descriptor

The Convoy lets you carry 2 bikes on the back of your vehicle. It has padded, ratcheting hooks that can hold your bikes by the frame or the wheel. The large front wheel cradles and sliding, ratcheting rear-wheel straps let you carry your bikes regardless of size, frame design, suspension, or brake style. A pin at the base lets you tilt the rack with bikes loaded for access to your vehicle's rear cargo area, and fold it up for storage. It also has locking hooks and a locking, anti-rattle hitch pin that secure your bikes to the rack and the rack to your vehicle. You can remove the 1-bike extension unit to convert the rack into a 1-bike carrier.

Pivoting Upright Arms with Ratcheting Hooks

upright arm

The pivoting upright arms have ratcheting hooks that grab your bikes firmly by the front wheels or the frames. These hooks let you rapidly load and unload your bikes, and they have rubber pads that won't scratch or scuff your bike paint. You can bolt an arm to the rear wheel tube to secure a bike by the frame, or bolt an arm to the front wheel tube to secure a bike by the wheel. The wheel-mount option is perfect for carbon frames and other sensitive bike frames. Mounting hardware is included.

upright arm

The arms pivot nearly 180 degrees from left to right. This lets you fold the arms down when not in use so you can access your vehicle's rear cargo area.

Large Front-Wheel Cradles

front wheel cradle

The front wheel cradles are extra-large to accommodate fat bike wheels.

Sliding Rear-Wheel Cradles

sliding rear wheel cradle

The rear-wheel cradles adjust to accommodate most bike lengths. Simply slide the straps to where the wheels meet the cradles then ratchet them tight to secure the bike's rear wheels to the rack. The rack includes extra-long straps that accommodate fat tires up to 5" wide.

Tilting and Folding Option

upright arm

A removable pin in the base lets you tilt the rack - with your bikes loaded - for access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. When you are not carrying your bikes you can fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle and re-insert the pin to hold it in place.

Locking System

Locking hookLocking hitch pin

The locking hooks secure your bikes to the rack and the threaded hitch pin secures the rack to your hitch receiver. Both the integrated hook locks and the hitch pin lock are keyed alike so you only need to use 1 key. The hitch pin also serves as an anti-wobble device to eliminate rattling in the receiver. The sliding keyhole cover on the lock keeps out dirt and moisture.

Detachable 1-Bike Add-On

Modular designInstalling the add-on to the base

The Convoy includes a detachable 1-bike add-on that lets you convert the rack from a 2-bike carrier to a 1-bike carrier. Simply remove the 2 hex head bolts with the included Allen key to remove the extension from the base.

Video Transcript for Rola Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2015 Mazda CX-9

Speaker 1: Today, on our 2015 Mazda CX-9, we're going to be taking a look at our ROLA Convoy, two-bike platform rack. That's part number 59308-2. This is a two-bike rack, but one of the main features it its modular design, which basically just means that this second platform can be removed if you only want to have one bike. Say you're going on a solo trip and you only need the one, you can remove this second rack and be lighter weight. It also features the tilt-a-way design, so we're going to remove our pin there, tilt it up, and pull back. That's going to give us plenty of room to access our rear hatch to get to our equipment or other supplies. We can raise our rack, just reversing the process.

It's always a good idea to put our pin back in place. Now, this bike does feature our upright hook arms that can either be mounted onto our tires so there's no frame contact, or it can be mounted onto the crossbar of our bike frame. It does feature this rubber grip to reduce the amount of contact with our bike frame, thereby reducing the amount of potential damage. Our wheel cradles here can accommodate up to a 5" fat-tire bike. It's also got grooves for mountain bikes or road bikes like we have here. On our back tire, we have a ratchet strap to keep our wheel in place. To remove our bike, we're just going push in on that clip and move our ratchet strap.

We have the extra long strap on here for a fat-tire, but there are shorter straps. Lift up on our bar and tilt down, and then remove our bike. One thing I do want to point out about these arms is that they do have a lock on there to secure our bikes. Then we'll lay our arm down here, and we'll get some measurements. One of the most important ones, I think, is our ground clearance; how far we're going to have to lift our bike up to get it into the rack here. To the tallest part of our rack is about 33 1/2", so again, when you're loading your second bike, you'll have to lift it up at least that high.

Also again, I'm going to measure from our bumper to the back part of our rack here. That is going to be about 33 1/2", so if you we're backing into a parking spot or something, you'll want to make sure to give yourself at least that much clearance. Now, the closest part of the rack to our vehicle is going to be about 5 1/4". Now, we're going to go ahead and remove this clip and show our tilt-up feature. Again, pulling that back up. We can replace our pin.

Now, give you a few measurements with it in the upright position. From the farthest point to our bumper, we're now looking at about 16", so that's obviously going to give us more clearance if we're parking in a parking garage or something like that, we'll have more room. From our nearest points, we're looking at just about 4". We're still going to have plenty of room. We're not going to be making contact with our vehicle. One last thing that I want to point out is our inside rattle hitch pin. That's going to provide extra security so that our bike rack isn't moving around in the hitch. It also has that lock to secure our bike rack to our vehicle. That is going to be keyed the same as the lock on the upright hooks. That is going to do it for our ROLA Convoy two-bike platform rack on our Mazda CX-9.

Good quality build, easy assembly (although torque recommendations would be helpful given the relatively soft metal the bolts and pin are made of-don't over tighten!). Holds bikes securely but even with the uprights locked a simple 8mm allen wrench will allow a bike to be stolen. Modular design is nice and just 2 bolts will allow you to add another bike holder. Upward bend of part that plugs into the hitch and design are excellent for maintaining some of the departure angle, esp on off road applications. 721768

Drove with this rack about 120 miles. We used it with three bikes on it. We had my sons very heavy downhill bike on the rack. No complaints did what it was suppose to. 655408

Excellent bike rack. The rack makes it super easy to load/unload bikes. It was very easy to assemble and seems very sturdy. The rack shipped fast from etrailer. Love you guys! 658755

For my 2012 FJ Cruiser 2”hitch. Easy to assemble in an hour, came with tools and three locks. Abit heavier than the T2 Thule Classic it replaced, but the materials are rugged and heavy duty on the Rola. The additional key/lock for the second bike platform was different, but appreciate they came equipped with locks. This review was written the day it was shipped to me. The distance from my spare tire was ample. 592517

This is the second rack. The first I ordered didn't work for me and Will at etrailer was great to work with on the return, getting suggestions on the replacement, and getting that replacement in time for my trip. The Rola was ordered Monday and was in my garage on Thursday. I ordered the add on rack for a second bike so there were two large boxes. Contrary to other reviews I found the install directions quite clear and the assembly of both pieces was done in 30 minutes. This is a heavy duty rack and the heft says quality to me. I used the hitch to assemble the rack. That made it easy and I recommend it. The rack is adjustable and easily adapts from mountain bike to road bike to my wife's bike. There is no sway or movement while driving. The tilt function is simpler than in the video even with two bikes loaded. One note: turn off park sense if you have a Jeep. You will get an alarm and automatic braking when you back up with the rack and bikes attached. Thank you etrailer. 702729

Just a few drives with this rack, but excellent so far. First, E-Trailer’s website and customer service was/is fantastic. If you haven’t noticed already, the amount of info on the site is incredible. They make it easy to conduct research. In our case, we needed a rack that could handle heavy downhill bikes and clear a rear-mounted spare tire (2011 RAV 4). This rack was on backorder for a while and E-Trailer staff did a wonderful job of keeping us up-to-date and providing options. The rack itself is very robust and well-constructed. It is easy to assemble and comes with good instructions. It is a heavy rack, but most heavy bike/e-bike racks will be – consider a second person to assist with assembly and mounting when the rack is still unfamiliar to you. I would absolutely buy this particular rack from this specific retailer again. 695359

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

Very well built and very sturdy. Came with all the tools needed for assembly and install. Assembly was a breeze. Works great for carrying my electric bike. I found that mounting the bike clamp so it is between the bike and the vehicle (inboard) makes for easier loading and unloading. One concern is the visibility when folded. I bought some reflexive tape to add on bottom of the main rail. See photo. 700316

I am pleased with the rack but do have a few problems. 1. I got this type of rack so I could let my tailgate down without removing the rack. The tailgate latch handle hits the pin slot not allowing it to go all the way down. This is no problem unless you add weight to the tailgate which will push into the latch handle. 2. I had to add a cable lock to fully secure my bike. With the arm assembly positioned on the frame, all that needs to be done is lift the front wheel out of the carrier and the bike can be removed. With the arm assembly placed on the front wheel, loosen front wheel for removal and lift bike out. 705604

Everything fit together as expected, very good quality, heavy built to handle my 70lb e-bike, liked the anti rattle feature attaching the unit to the vehicle receiver. Plan on taking the bike from Mich to Fla in Dec,glad to have 2 locks to protect the bike on overnight motel stays. 702902

Heavy duty built. The mounted bike tips to the front of the vehicle rather than verticle, I assume that is the design goal. Great value. 658918

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

Overall, It is a very good and solid rack for the money. It was easy to assemble and install and works well. However, I can't understand why a company that makes a relatively good product ruins it by using cheap locks that don't work. After installing the rack, I decided to check the locking device which locked the racks arm over the bike. Problem was it would not unlock. I could not get the key in the lock for love nor money and spent an hour or two trying. After spending a long time with the service rep on the phone, he decided to send me what he called a master key. (My bike had now been trapped on the back of my car for several days). The master key was a waste of time but eventually after a can or two of WD40 I got the key in the lock and unlocked it. Wil never lock it again and decided not to use the lock on the hitch pin in case that did not work. 654946

So far I am happy with my purchase of the Rola Bicycle carrier I purchased from etrailer. The rack fits with a Rad Mini E-bike mounted on my 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with 35' spare tire, AND... fuel & water cans mounted on the rear with plenty of clearance even with no bike mounted and folded up (check out the pictures). It also works well with the off-road camper trailer that often follows the same Jeep during event weekends. 636053

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

This goes on the back of a Jeep that does some rough off roading to get to a few prime biking trails. My last carrier shook itself apart so I decided to go one step up the price range and as soon as I picked the box up I knew this was more substantial than my last carrier, once unboxed I was pleasantly surprised at how well this was built. The enclosed instructions were good and once it was easily assembled it is rock solid in the receiver. It still has yet to go on the trail but from what I see so far I think this is going to work out well. I called this order in because I had some questions about shipping options, great customer service from Jesse who kept me advised of the status all through the order and shipping process. etrailer is now on my "good guy" list. 557896

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

Was ordered and arrived at my door in 3 days. Unit is very well built. Assembled the rack in about 20 minutes, and the design lends itself to a very easy assembly proces. I will be hauling around a fat bike as well as a 60 pound ebike, so I was interested in this rack due to the heavier weight rating. Online reviews of the product eased the selection process, and were an accurate reflection of the Convoy. Icing on the cake? A personal email from Carol C as a follow up when the rack was delivered. In this day and age, very few retailers, online or not, would follow this practice. I will continue to use etrailer - the Rola convoy was a good choice! 611467

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

I purchased this bike rack several weeks ago but wanted to test it before writing a review. Just completing a 163 mile round trip to a bike ride I can say this rack performed flawlessly. It is easy to assemble, holds my road bike securely, is lockable for security, and versatile enough to hold any bike you own. Etrailer provided the shipping and I couldn't be happier, I was able to track the shipment and it arrived a day early, big plus. Another cool feature of the etrailer website is the videos describing the product features and actually showing the rack on a road test, way cool. If you are looking for a quality bike rack from an outstanding company you need to buy from etrailer. 720561

This bike carrier appears to be very well constructed. It is heavy, but I’m so glad that it is! It’s hard to find anything these days that is not a cheap, disposable, poorly-made item. Easy assembly and very quick delivery. I feel confident having my heavy ebikes on this carrier. 700277

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

This platform hitch rack was purchased to haul an e-bike. The previous rack was under spec for the e-bike’s weight. Overall the rack is great especially considering the price. It rides like bike rack car are all one unit. If I had a gripe it’s when removed from car it’s awkward, hard to move around, does not fit in any space well. I’m going to leave it on the car. 697777

  • Hitch and Bike Rack For 2014 Honda Civic Carrying Specialized Stumpjumper ST Bike
  • Yes, The EcoHitch part # 306-X7235 will install nicely on your 2014 Honda Civic and I will send you in the installation instructions. The Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style rack part # TH990XT is a great choice and will work well with the EcoHitch on the Honda Civic. However, I looked up the 2020 Specialized Stumpjumper ST and it has a carbon fiber frame. I do not recommend a bike rack that holds the bikes by the frame like the Doubletrack with a carbon fiber bike. I recommend Rola...

  • Why Are Some Bike Racks Not Rated For Use on RV or Trailer and Option for Rack on a Trailer
  • That's a good question and while we have bike racks that can be used on a trailer, you hit the mark when you mentioned "bounce" as the reason that some bike racks like the RockyMounts SplitRail LS # RKY11404 and Rola Convoy # 59308-2 are not rated for use behind an RV or trailer. However, your carbon frame bikes ideally need a wheel-mounted rack in order to avoid potentially damaging the frame. • Platform Bike Rack that is Rated for Use Behind Motorhome and Flat Towed Vehicle
  • At the rear of a trailer or RV the ride quality is very rough when compared to the ride quality at the rear of a passenger vehicle. Reason being the suspension isn't as sophisticated and there is a longer distance between the rear axle and the rear of the motorhome which exaggerates the movement of the trailer when hitting bumps. Flat towed vehicles typically have a slightly side-to-side movement that puts stress on bike racks. Because of that only a few bike racks were designed to be reinforced...
