RockyMounts SplitRail Hitch Mount In Use

The RockyMounts SplitRail platform-style bike rack lets you carry 2 bikes using your vehicle's 2" hitch. It is designed to carry bicycles of varying sizes and styles. The bike trays adjust to optimize bike spacing and reduce bike-to-bike contact. The ratcheting arms and wheel straps secure your bikes by the wheels so there's no frame contact. The front-mounted release lever allows the rack to easily tilt down with bikes loaded for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area and fold up when not in use. Finally, the rack includes integrated cable locks to secure your bikes to the rack and a locking hitch pin for securing the rack to your vehicle.

Wheel-Mount Design for Easy Bike Loading

RockyMounts Split Rail Adjustable Wheel Holder

The Rack allows you to quickly and easily load and carry 2 bicycles on the back of your vehicle. The ratcheting arms securely hold your bikes by the front wheels so there's no frame contact. Simply push the button on the hook and slide it firmly into place over your front wheel.

Sliding Rear-Wheel Straps

RockyMounts Split Rail Ratcheting Straps

The sliding rear-wheel straps allow the rack to accommodate bikes with wheelbases up to 48" long. The ratcheting, rubber straps hold your bikes' rear wheels securely in place on the tray and fit tires up to 3" wide.

Adjustable Bike Tray

RockyMounts SplitRail Rack Adjustable Bike Tray

The front and back trays adjust 4" side-to-side to ensure you have enough space when loading your bikes. Just remove the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the top of the rack, slide the trays left or right to achieve the desired spacing, and then re-install the bolts. This will prevent your bikes' handlebars from becoming tangled, and it eliminates the fear of bike-to-bike contact during transportation.

Front-Mounted Release Lever for Easy Tilting

RockyMounts SplitRail Bike Rack Adjustable Handle for Tilt Fold Action

The front-mounted release lever allows one person to easily tilt the RockyMounts SplitRail. The rack tilts down with or without bikes loaded for convenient access to your vehicle's rear cargo area.

RockyMounts Split Rail Bike Rack Folded Up

The lever also lets you fold the rack up for storage when you're not transporting a bike. This is great for parking in places where space is limited such as a parking garage

Easy Installation with Anti-Rattle Device

RockyMounts Split Rail Hitch Mount Close Up

The RockyMounts SplitRail installs quickly and easily into your 2" hitch receiver. Adjust the anti-wobble wedge with the included hex wrench and slide it onto the shank. Once in place, insert the shank into your vehicle's hitch receiver and install the locking hitch pin. Tighten the anti-wobble wedge in the receiver for a secure hold.

RockyMounts Split Rail Adjustable Knob Tightener

Make final adjustments by turning the knob underneath the rack to make sure the rack is firmly held in place. This will reduce noise and movement while the rack is in use.

Security Features

RockyMounts SplitRail Bike Rack Built-In Cable Locks

The rack comes with integrated cable locks to secure your bikes against theft. The cables extended from the ends of the wheel hooks and wrap around your bikes' frames to lock them to the rack

RockyMounts Split Rail Hitch Mount Locking Pin

The hitch pin also comes with a hitch lock to help prevent the rack from being removed from your vehicle.

Convenient Wall Mount Storage Hook

RockyMounts SplitRail Bike Rack Wall Mount Storage Hook Supporting Rack

An included mounting hook bolts to a secure attachment point so you can hang the rack when not in use. Simply remove the rack from your vehicle, reinstall the hitch pin and then set the shank in the middle of the bracket, inserting the hitch pin into the bracket's cradles.

RockyMounts SplitRail Bike Rack Wall Mount Storage Hook

When mounting the storage hook use a pair of 5/16" x 3" lag bolts (sold separately). Select a sturdy location, such as a wall stud, and make sure the location is at least 36" off the ground so the rack can hang unobstructed.

Optional 1-Bike Add-On for 3 or 4 Bike Carrying Capacity

RockyMounts SplitRail Bike Rack Add-On Demonstrated

There is an optional 1-bike add-on available (RKY1150 - sold separately) for the RockyMounts SplitRail that will allow you to convert it from a 2-bike carrier to a 3- or 4-bike carrier.

Video Transcript for RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rocky Mounts Split Rail 2 Bike Platform Rack for 2 inch hitches, part number RKY1140. This is also available for inch and 1/4 hitches as part number RKY1130. The Rocky Mounts Split Rail Bike Rack is a great rack for your vehicle. It carries up to 2 bikes, and since it uses wheel hooks to secure your bikes down it can fit a wide variety of them; anywhere from road bikes to mountain bikes to kids bikes. One of the best features about this bike rack is it can tilt away from your vehicle with both bikes still attached. Also, the handle is going to be at the end here, which is a little different from other bike racks where you'd have to reach around to let it come down. Go ahead and pull out on the handle holding on to the bike rack while we do this, pull out and let it come down.

With that we can have access to our rear hatch. When you've gotten everything you need from the rear hatch just lift back up on the bike rack. You're going to hear that click, and now it's locked back into it's original position. Another great feature about this bike rack is both wheel hooks at the ends come with these integrative locks to further secure your bikes to the bike rack. They are keyed alike. By loosening up the bolts here and here these wheel trays are adjustable to the left or right to accommodate different sized bikes, or for better bike configuration for loading.

The wheel trays will accommodate tires up to 3 inches. Now, with no bikes on this for close quarters situations such as parking or when you put it in your garage, this does fold up against the vehicle. You go to the same handle you used to tilt it down, again pull out, and just push up. You're going to hear that click and it's going to be locked into place. How this attaches to the hitch, to ensure that it's not going to be rattling all over the place we do have this anti-rattle knob at the end. You turn to the left to loosen and you can see it has play in it again.

Turn to the right to tighten and it takes out all that play. Also towards the hitch here we have this wedge that's also going to help with the anti-rattle, and this locking pin at the end here. Now, I would like to note that the locking pin here as well as the 2 integrating cable locks on the bike rack are all keyed alike. How the anti-rattle works when we loosen it up here, you can see we move the pin wherever. When you push this pin through you're going through this portion inside the shank of the bike rack that when you tighten down the anti-rattle knob at the end it's actually pulling that forward against the pin. With the anti-rattle knob fully tightened you can see I can't move the pin at all. Another great feature about this is it does come with this wall mount that is included with the kit.

It does recommend that you hang this at least 36 inches off the ground and secure it to a stud behind the wall using a 5/16 by 3 inch lag bolt, which are not included. How this works is, once you mount this up the hitch would actually hang on this. Once you're done using it you can actually just hang it in your garage. With this split rail you can also add 3 or 4 bikes with part number RKY1150, which is sold separately. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how it installs. First, put it into our 2 inch receiver hitch, making sure to line up the hitch pin holes. Now we'll go ahead and grab our locking pin, slide it through our pin hole. We'll take the included lock, place it on the other side, turn the key, and it's secured into place. We're going to take our wedge and that's going to sit in between the hitch and our bike rack here, and that's going to assist with the anti-rattle function of it. With our wedge in place we'll tighten down our bolt here with our included 5 millimeter hex wrench. Now we'll go to our anti-rattle knob, turn that to the right to tighten that up. All right, we're good to go. With our bike rack secured in the hitch, next we're going to go to this handle here, pull up like so and fold it out so we can get ready to load up our bike. Next we'll unfold our wheel hook here, making sure it's all the way out. Then we'll unfasten our wheel strap in the back here by pushing on this tab at the top. Now we're ready to load up our bike. A particular note here: when you are loading up your bikes you want to put the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle. While holding onto the bike we'll go ahead and bring up our wheel hook and ratchet that down in position. With that holding it in place we go to the back wheel strap here and adjust that. These do slide, and that'll hold that in place. With our bike secured to the rack we'll come up to the top of the wheel hook and get our integrated cable lock, wrap that around the bike for some additional security. We'll wrap it around the frame right around this area, then back up at the top here we'll have our locking portion. We'll slide that up, attach it like so, and we'll take our key and now it's locked in position. Now with our bike rack secured and locked into place, let's go ahead and take it on our test course an show you how it works. Here it is on our test course. We'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Next we're at the alternating speed bumps, which we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Finally we have the full speed bumps where we'll see the up and down action, which is just like driving out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway. There you have it for the Rocky Mounts Split Rail 2 Bike Platform Rack for 2 inch hitches, part number RKY1140.

Etrailer had the best price and their follow up to make sure I'm happy with the bike rack has been great. I did a significant amount of research before buying the RockyMounts Split Rail bike rack. It does everything the other guys do but always in a better way. The way the rack attaches to the hitch is brilliant, not only does it have the non rattle wedge but that wedge and the bike rack are pulled into the receiver when you tighten the knob. This not only tightens the area around the wedge but also the pin is pulled against the receiver too, creating not only a very solid connection but probably the safest connection in the industry. That hitch pin is also locked to the receiver so even if that knob were to loosen the rack would never fall out going down the road. The cost of a lawsuit from a hitch coming loose and taking out a vehicle following you could be very expensive. Hands down this is the best design on the market! The convenient location of the handle is one of two racks on the market that have it located at the back of the rack. No contortions pulling a pin underneath while raising or lowering the rack. This rack comes with two trays and if you want to add just one more tray it is again one of two racks on the market where you can just add one tray. Most racks sell a two tray add on which makes the rack pretty big especially if you only need a total of 3 trays. This rack is the only one on the market that has all of the features listed above in one bike rack. My only initial negative turned out to be a positive, the lock that pulls out of the hook was difficult to pull out at first and I thought it was a design defect, but on closer inspection there are ridges on the part that pulls out and indentations on the part it slides into making it secure so the locks will not come loose and drag down the road when its unloaded. I've only had the rack for a short time but looking at the engineering and construction I'm sure it will be around for a long time. 324355

Placed rack on a 2014 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 with a Leer Camper Shell. Customer service was spot on! I was worried about handlebars (30") striking glass on camper. etrailer sent detailed measurements on rack and how to compensate measurements on truck to assure my clearance concerns. The tail gate will clear bike and drop fully down without touching rack when rack is in the down position. The tail gate will not go fully down when rack is in the load position. It strikes the tire block on closest tray. The rear latch handle is in great location when rack needs to be manipulated up or down. Rack is built like a tank. It will last. Assembly was straight forward with included directions. Took longer to unbox parts than to assemble rack. Very pleased with purchase 370397

Pros: 1. Easy to assemble. 2. Easy to use. 3. Easy access to rear hatch of vehicle, even with two bikes on the rack. 3. Great design. 4. Lifetime warranty. Cons: 1. Made in China. 2. Powder coating seems uneven/thin in several areas. 3. Blocks license plate on vehicle. 3. The anti-wobble device is a piece of junk, and would not fit in my Curt hitch no matter how much brute force was used. I purchased a StowAway Hitch Tightener, which works great. I have used the rack three times, and so far I am very satisfied. 501300

Comments

Ben, thank you for your review. The anti-wobble that comes with this bike rack part RKY1140 does have a bolt on the side of it. Loosen this bolt on the anti-wobble wedge with the 5mm hex wrench. Then slide wedge onto bike rack hitch tube flat side first. Once you put the anti-wobble wedge on the bike rack hitch tube then slide that piece into the receiver on the vehicle. Install the hitch pin and lock. Pull the anti-wobble all the way down the bike rack hitch tube until it meets the receiver and tighten the bolt on the anti-wobble with the hex wrench. The anti-wobble should get tight enough to wedge itself between the bike rack tube and the receiver opening to tighten up any space or wobble. Most bike racks create limited visibility of the license plate. I recommend relocating the license plate to an area that is more visible using a license plate bracket such as part # LP15SB

I like this rack; it's solid, and after a year it still feels well-built. Still looks new. Bikes are held effectively. I would recommend it to others. The positives aside, here are the negatives, which is why I only gave it four stars: -The anti-rattle device isn't particularly effective, because it doesn't fit into my trailer hitch (looking at other reviews, this is a common problem). It's less-rattly than my old rack (Saris Cycle-On Pro), but still not as good as it should be. -The screw that retains the lock cable was missing on one arm; I contacted RockyMounts, and they mailed a replacement screw to me a couple days later. 457912

I have just installed this product on my Toyota Highlander. As a nearly 60 year old female with rheumatoid arthritis, I was able to assemble and manipulate this rack by myself. Yes, it is awkward and heavy but worth the effort. I did have someone else go after me later to tighten the screws. Once installed, it is easily manipulated into all positions: storage, transport, and tilted. I am better able to lift my Townie bike onto the rack and feel much more confident as I travel; that the bike and rack are staying in place. 382894

Comments

I still enjoy this rack system. It is the simplest and easiest system for raising and lowering into position with one hand. I am able to load my quickly and secure them easily. My bikes stay in position safely and do not scrap each other. Unfortunately, it is heavy and awkward to remove from the vehicle and store, so that only happens once a year. My only complaint is that it wiggles loose quickly at the mounting hitch. The piece that slides onto the post to help the connection to the hitch be snug, slips out. This requires me to carry a hammer and beat it back into position, no matter the tightening or adjusting of the clasp.

Thanks for your follow up Amanda. I have spoken with my contacts at RockyMounts and they have heard of this before, and are in the process of redesigning the anti-wobble system for the 2019 release of the SplitRail. What you have done is exactly what they advise and use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to get the anti-wobble in there tighter. Another suggestion they had is to install a second anti-wobble device collar to collar so that the original anti-wobble can not work loose. Since you leave your bike rack on for extensive periods of time, this might be a good solution for you. For this SplitRail bike rack with the 2 inch shank the anti-wobble part is # RKY11280

Amazed at how fast I received this rack. Everything was there and in good condition because it was packed very well. Clear directions and all of the tools and fasteners made it easy to assemble. I was surprised at how secure it held my ebikes even when driving over a rough road. Very pleased with my purchase. 433258

I really like this Platform carrier.. It is super sturdy and holds the bikes really secure. The only thing I wish was better was the anti sway mechanism. While it is good it throws the carrier off camber or centered I should say.. Just doesn't look symmetrical with the back of the vehicle... 392345

Review from a similar RockyMounts SplitRail in Hitch Bike Racks

The 3 bike racks from Rocky mountain that I ordered is perfect for me. I am able to see through my rearview mirror and I have yet to have a problem. However, the additional rack comes with a separate key and does not match the original two racks so you will have two separate keys for locking the bikes. Overall, good product. I have been on bumpy roads and the bikes hold well without any issues of rocking back-and-forth. I definitely recommend this bike rack! 502609

Review from a similar RockyMounts SplitRail in Hitch Bike Racks

So far it seems good and easy to use. One issue we’ve had is that the threads on many of the bolt holes seem to be not quite right. Some bolts need an enourmous amount of torque to tighten. One bolt hole on the extension piece now spins and I cant tighten the bolt. I’ll be reaching out to Rocky Mounts to see if they can resolve the issue. In pictures below, the bottom left bolt hole spins and cannot take a bolt. 491975

Really nice Rack and easy to put together. Had a little trouble with the anti wobble bracket so I opted for an aftermarket bracket and it is holding tight. Great Value for the money. 495983

  • RockyMounts SplitRail vs. Kuat Transfer vs. Saris Freedom Bike Rack Comparison
  • Both the RockyMounts Split Rail part # RKY1140 and the Kuat Transfer part # TS02G are great bike racks. The Kuat weighs a bit less at 37 lbs vs. the RM which weighs 44 lbs but you give up a bit of adjustability with the Kuat. The RM allows the rear rail to slide to adjust to bike lengths better. It's also very easy to fold up and down when needed. Platform bike racks require quite a bit of material to make due to the nature of the rack so they weigh more than hanging racks, but they...

If that dimension is the most important factor for you the RockyMounts will be the better rack. The SplitRail is also a bit lighter at 44 lbs compared to the Thule which is 52. I did attach review videos for both rack for you to check out for further comparison.

  • Recommended Light Weight Bike Rack on a Jeep Liberty with Rear Spare Tire
  • The best option for your Jeep Liberty is a swinging hitch rack. The RockyMounts BackStage # RKY10002 swings completely away from the vehicle to allow access to the rear cargo area. The BackStage also has a maximum capacity of 60 pounds per bike which is a lot higher than most swinging racks which usually cap out at 40 pounds. The issue with the BackStage is it's about 75 pounds. But it's going to be the best option to carry the bikes otherwise.

  • Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for 2015 Toyota RAV4 to Allow Rear Hatch Clearance
  • When we installed the RockyMounts SplitRail part # RKY1140 in the hitch of a 2015 Toyota RAV4 we found that when tilted it allowed the rear hatch to open. Check out the picture I attached that shows the hatch opening as well as the demo video I attached that shows the rack being used on a 2015 Toyota RAV4. This rack is really great too because it only touches the tires of the bike which means no contact with the bikes frame or finish.

  • Recommended Platform Bike Rack for 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6r with Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch
  • Good news, I can help you select a great bike rack for your and your vehicle's needs. I checked your previous order and found that you purchased the Draw-Tite # 75673 Class III trailer hitch. The Hollywood Racks SportRider2 # HR1450 weighs 54lbs. We have installed the SportRider2 on a 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon, which I've linked for you to check out, and yes the rack will tilt down out of the way enough for your rear hatch to open even with the bikes loaded. It will also store nicely...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek with EcoHitch InvisiHitch Installed
  • I went out to our warehouse and measured both the RockyMounts Backstage, part # RKY10002 and the SplitRail, part # RKY1140, and they both have shanks that extend 2.5 inches past the hitch pin hole, which in the case of the EcoHitch, part # 306-X7203, and its open styled shank, is enough to contact or damage your vehicle behind the hitch receiver when installed. Instead, I recommend the Thule Doubletrack Pro, part # TH9054 , which only has a shank that requires 1-1/2 inches of depth,...

  • Where to Attach the Curt Stabilizer Strap to the RockyMounts Split Rail Bike Rack
  • Attaching the Curt stabilization strap # 18050 to a bike rack like the SplitRail # RKY1140 is a little tricky since there isn't a center mast. As long as the strap is attached at all you will be in compliance with the hitch warranty requirements though. I recommend attach it as best as you can to the nearest hooked arm or you might be able to loop it around the shank. As long as it is attached in some manner to the rack and to the vehicle you will be within the warranty requirements.

  • Overall Length and Ground Clearance Estimate for the RockyMounts Split Rail Bike Rack
  • I will be happy to get you the measurements you are looking for. The RockyMounts Split Rail bike rack # RKY1140 measures approximately 32 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the bike rack when folded down to load bikes. Ground clearance will depend on the distance from the ground to the top of the receiver opening so if you take that measurement on your vehicle and then add another 5 inches that is the approximate location of the bottom of the spine that holds...

  • Recommended Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack for 2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk
  • As long as you have a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver installed on your 2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, the RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack # RKY1140 referenced in your question will work great. This is a platform-style rack that will not have any bike frame contact and can hold 2 bikes of up to 60 pounds each. The neat thing about this rack is that you can actually expand it to a 3-bike carrier by adding part # RKY1150, if the need should ever arise. Another great feature is that...

  • Recommendation for Platform Bike Rack for Bikes with Fenders
  • The RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount - Tilting Item # RKY1140 is not a good option for bikes with fenders over the front wheels. The hooks need to fit tight to the bike and fenders can get in the way or get damaged. What I recommend is the Malone Pilot # MPG2112 for 2 inch hitches or # MPG2109 for 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitches. This rack also has hooks but they can be placed at the tires like the SplitRail or they can hold the bike at the frame. This...

  • Hitch Mount Bike Rack to Carry 2 Bikes on 2 Different Vehicles With Different Sized Hitch Receivers
  • For your 2016 Toyota Highlander the best hitch option is the Draw-Tite Max-E-Loader # 75896. This is a class III, 2 inch hitch receiver. There is not a 2 inch hitch receiver that is compatible with your 2010 Honda Civic. You will need a 1-1/4 inch hitch like the Draw-Tite Sport Frame # 24763. This is a class I hitch rated up to 200 lbs. of tongue weight. I have attached installation videos for both hitches on both vehicles. Since there isn't a 2 inch hitch that will work on...

  • RockyMounts SplitRail Hitch Mount Bike Rack to Fit 2012 Prius V with Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • The RockyMounts SplitRail # RKY1130 is the rack you will want for your 2012 Toyota Prius V. This rack fits a Class I, 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver which is what you'll have on your vehicle. It has a maximum capacity of 60 pounds per bike so it will be great for your electric bikes. It also includes a cable lock to lock the bikes to the rack and a locking hitch pin to secure the rack to your Prius. The RockyMounts SplitRail # RKY1140 will not work because it fits a Class III trailer...

  • Will RockyMounts Split Rail Carry 2 ProdecoTech Stride 500 Electric Bikes
  • Based on what you described the RockyMounts SplitRail part # RKY1140 would be your best option. It fits your budget, the weight capacity you need, and only touches the bikes at the tires. This aluminum bike rack is very sturdy and would be a great option.

  • Recommended 2-Bike Hitch Mounted Rack that is Easy to Use
  • For a great and easy-to-use 2-bike rack for your 2017 Subaru Forester, I highly recommend the RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack # RKY1140. This platform rack will secure your bikes by just their wheels, making for simple and quick loading and unloading. You will pull down the ratcheting hooks onto the wheels to secure your bikes to the carrier. This rack can be tilted down, even with the bikes still loaded, for rear cargo access. The front-mounted release lever allows a single...

  • Measurement from Hitch Pin Hole to Closest Edge of RockyMounts SplitRail 2-Bike Platform Rack
  • From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack # RKY1140, there is right at around 11-1/2 inches of space when it is folded down for use. When the bike rack is folded up, this distance is reduced to around 6-1/2 inches. If you need just a little more space, I recommend looking at the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack - Platform Style # Y02443 which has a distance of 12 inches when folded down and 7 inches when folded up.

  • Will the RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack Work on a 2017 Subaru Forester
  • The RockyMounts SplitRail 2 Bike Platform Rack, part # RKY1140, will work well with your 2017 Subaru Forester as long as you have a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. As you can see from the multiple demonstration videos, the SplitRail should not cause you issues if you want to open up your rear hatch with your bike(s) loaded. This bike rack comes with integrated bike and rack locks to help deter theft so you can have more peace of mind when making a pit stop on your long trip. The other...

  • Hitch Bike Rack to Clear Rear Spare of 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
  • We always have to recommend you stay with a bike rack manufacturer's recommendations otherwise you can void the warranty of the rack. I believe I have a solution for you though. My favorite bike rack to recommend is the Thule Vertex Swing part # TH9031XT because it can carry up to 4 bikes and can swing out and away from the rear of the vehicle to give you complete access to the rear cargo area with bikes loaded. The arms of the rack can also fold down when not in use so that the bike...
