Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Dual Trekker 2 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rhino-Rack duel trekker. This is a platform style 2 bike rack. They've designed it so we can use it with the 1 - 1/4 or 2 inch hitches. Part number is RRRBC048. One of the great features of the rack as you can see, we currently have it tilted up against the rear of our vehicle. This is going to reduce the length that we've added to the back of our vehicle whether it's a SUV, truck, or car to help us get maybe in the garage a little bit better and not take up so much room in parking lots. There's a black lever located right here on the front of the rack.

It's right down at the base of the hub. Pulling that is going to allow us to tilt the rack away from our vehicle into its platform or its loading position. As you can see here, we've got a nice, long pivoting arm. It holds our front wheel hook. It's adjustable and ratcheting in many different positions.

This is going to be able to accommodate a wide variety of tire sizes. Our cradles themselves nice durable, injection molded plastic. As you can see we do have the groove that runs right through the bottom. That's going to be for our road tire bikes. This cradle is inside to inside 3 inches wide while on our rear wheel cradle to the inside of these ribs that run down, it's 2 and 7/8 of an inch, just so you have an idea of what kind of tire sizes it's able to accommodate. We've got a nice sliding read wheel strap here.

This, of course, is goung to allow us to fit a wide variety of wheel bases on our rack and as you can see we've got a nice long strap to accommodate many different sized tires. Loading our bike with our front wheel hook already extended is as easy as undoing our rear wheel strap here. We'll then grab the bike and place it right up into our cradles. We're going to bring our front wheel hook back. We're going to position this right in front of the front brake caliper.

We don't want it to make contact, but we want it to be as close as possible. As you can see, at no place on the tire down here or up here have we made any contact with anything other than the rubber of the tire. Here at the rear the strap will come over, connect then, and we cinch it down. As you can see this is going to make contact with the rim, but they've got a really nice rubber bumper that's made to sit right on top of that and give us any protection that we may need for our rear rim. Another one of the great features, I know it's packed full of them, but that same handle that we used to tilt it away from the vehicle is also going to allow us to tilt the rack further away from the vehicle into the tilted down position even when we've got a bike loaded. Depending on your car and your bike style, this typically allows us to fully open our rear hatch without any interference. Again, it's going to vary depending on the vehicle that you've got. We've got a nice powder coat black finish that's laid onto a nice durable steel. That's really going to help it stay looking good for a long time since that's going to resist corrosion and rust. Now that we've gone over some of the key features of the rack, let me get this taken off the vehicle, and I'll show you how to install it. As you can see we've got the 1-1/4 shank here on the rack. This is going to go into the 1-1/4 style receivers, so if you've got one of those, this is the way you'll want to do it. To move to the 2 inch we're going to take the included hardware. This is going to be our 2 plates and our allen bolt. We're going to place those right down onto the rack. Now a little tip here. We've got 2 holes: 1 in the front. 1 in the rear. The 1 in the front is the 1 we thread in our hitch pin bolt through. The 1 in the rear is going to hold our 2 inch converter arm. We're going to slide our bolt through. We're just going to thread it through and actually into the other half. Just tighten that down there, and as you can see it's not going anywhere. We're ready to put it into the square bolt. We're just going to slide the shank right into the receiver tube of the hitch. We'll slide it in far enough so that the threaded pin hole lines up with our hitch pin hole. Now with those in line, we're going to grab our anti-rattle bolt. We can slide that through. Now the anti-rattle bolt by itself helps to pull the rack over against the receiver tube of our hitch. Once we have it hand tight, we're just going to tighten it down with a wrench. As you can see we've still got some play there. It's allowing our rack to move, but once we get it tightened down, we've really taken all the play out of the back of there. There rack's not going anywhere unless the suburban's moving. We'll then take our supplied lock. We'll slide it right on the end. We can then remove our key and slide the dust cover closed. As you can see we've got both of our bikes loaded up. We're now going to secure them. These a really neat system here. Nice strong cable. As you can see on 1 side we've got a loop that's got a metal grommet in it. The other side we've just got a loop. It's a matter of personal opinion how you want to set this up. I like to go around the frame and then through the small triangle section there and around the rear wheel. This cable does provide enough length that we can then go through the front wheel on our furthest back bike. Then we'll go through the rear rim and frame on our rear bike. We've then got the end of the cable here with the grommet on it. We're going to remove the bolt lock. As you can see that's going to come right off of there. We then slide that grommet right over. Now the suburban's hitch pin hole is really close to the actual receiver there. This is my vehicle, and I often have troubles getting these locks on, but in any normal situation it's going to slide right on there. Then we'll simply push our lock right back on the end, pull the key out, and then close that dust cover back up. As you can see, we've now got both of our bikes secured to our vehicle. Both of our bikes and the rack secured into our receiver, too, so we don't have to worry about our bikes or our rack disappearing. With our rack all loaded up, we're going to head out to our test course, so you can see what it looks like in action. We'll start by going through our slalom course. That's going to show us the side to side movement of the rack as if we we're going around a corner and maybe doing some evasive maneuvering. Once we go around the corner we'll see our alternating speed bumps. These are going to apply some torque to the rack, so we'll see what it looks like maybe if we we're hitting a pothole or the curb we didn't see. Once we get into our solid speed bumps, we'll see the up and down movement of the rack. This will be just like going in and out of parking garages or parking lot or driveways. Stuff like that. That will complete today's look at the Rhino-Rack dual trekker platform style 2 bike rack designed for use in 1-1/4 and 2 inch hitches, Part Number is RRRBC048. .

We are thrilled with our new bike rack, it is easy to put together and simple to use. Heavy duty quality. We are very impressed. thanks so much for the quick, free shipping. It's also very wise of you to have a video of this rack on your web site, we probably would not have bought it on line without seeing how it worked first. 334230

Rhino-Rack Dual Trekker 2 Bike Platform First, etrailer was great. I kept reading reviews and watching their videos about the features. After much research I was about to hit BUY when I thought of a question. I called etrailer and Julie answered my question about clearance between the rack and the Prius and I was sold. She offered to put the order through on the phone because it might go through more quickly. I was leaving in a week and needed to have time to install it. The rack arrived 3 days later! I wanted a platform rack that tilted and folded to fit my 2013 Prius. There weren’t a lot of those and I was hoping not to pay for the T Brand name but I never saw a T that tilted and folded that fit a Prius. I was going to go with a rack that was half the price of the Rhino but determined that you get what you pay for. The Rhino came with ratcheting arms that hold the bikes securely and only come in contact with the tires rather than the frame so the frame finish won’t be ruined. The Rhino also came with a lock and cable that I would have paid extra for with the less expensive brand. So, I have the pieces of Rhino laid out on a blanket so that I don’t lose or scratch anything. Bad news, the instructions aren’t detailed for someone who doesn’t have a puzzle brain and a vocabulary for nuts and bolts. And, the one Allen wrench was too small. It didn’t fit anything that needed to be tightened. Good thing I had a friend who had larger Allen wrenches, ratchets, and a soft mallet to persuade one end to fit into the other. Good news, I got the Rhino on my Prius and there’s plenty of clearance! When the rack is folded up I can still fit between the rack and the car and open the hatch. And the tilt feature is great to fit larger items in the hatch. I need to practice taking the bike off the rack because the first time was almost a disaster. Learning curve. The downside is that the added 60 lbs will clearly impact the mileage. If I don’t think about the mileage I think I’ll really like the ease of this rack. I’m giving the Rhino 3 stars because the assembly was a potential disaster with that one worthless tool. P.S. I installed the rack today and have done a stellar job putting on reflective tape. The road test will come on a trip to DC this week. 372252

I am very pleased with this hitch !! We have traveled a lot with our bikes and not an issue to complain about!!! Very well made product and holds our bikes really secure. We went camping last eeek and took out bikes . I had people ask about my bike carrer and what brand is it . I would highly recommend this product . The only drawback I feel is that it is heavy . That’s why is secure . Get this carrier you won’t be disappointed!!!! It is easy to install and you get videos to help you . 542698

So far the bike carrier has worked flawlessly. Installation of the receiver hitch on my car was easy after watching the youtube video. The only concern is the flex in the smaller tubing. Bikes bounce around while driving making me a bit uneasy but they haven't had any issues or bending in the tube even over rough roads. 199061

Ask the Experts about this Rhino Rack Hitch Bike Racks

Do you have a question about this Hitch Bike Rack?

  • Best Bike Rack for a 2017 Toyota Prius Prime with Class I Trailer Hitch
  • In order to use a hitch mounted bike rack with your 2017 Toyota Prius Prime you need a trailer hitch. For this I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24966. The Draw-Tite Sportframe is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. The only trailer hitch receivers they make for your Prius Prime are Class I. Therefore, you will need to use only Class I rated bike racks. In addition to the class rating you need to take into consideration the recessed receiver...

  • Hitch Bike Rack that Fits 2017 Toyota Prius Prime and Clears Bumper with Draw Tite Hitch Installed
  • Due to how tight the Draw Tite hitch part # 24966 installs to the bottom of your 2017 Toyota Prius Prime and the rise in the shank of the Kuat bike rack you mentioned these two aren't going to work well together folded or down. The only solution I can provide is a similar bike rack that has a straight shank instead so that the bumper wouldn't be an issue. For that you'd want the Rhino-Rack Dual Trekker 2 Bike Platform Rack # RRRBC048 since it has a straight shank. It wouldn't have enough...

The Rhino Rack Dual Trekker 2 Bike Platform Rack # RRRBC048 that you referenced weighs 56 lbs. The Kuat Transfer is a great bike rack. It is really selling well for us because of it's relative light weight and the fact that it only touches the bike at the tires. It's a bit more stripped down that the other racks but that's part of why it...

  • My recommendation for a Class 1 bike rack is the Kuat NV 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" Hitches - Tilting - Aluminum - Gunmetal Gray # NV12G. This versitile design fits most bikes regardless of size, weight, frame design, susension, or brake style. It has racheting hooks that firmly grip your bikes by the front wheels so there is no frame contact and the TPE coating prevents hooks from scratching and scuffing your bike paint. They have the same weight capacity and can be used in 1-1/4 and 2-inch trailer htich receivers.
