Video Transcript for Reese Tilting 3 Bike Rack Review

Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at Etrailer.com today we're going to be taking a look at a three bike rack from Reese. This bike rack offers really easy installation and it also offers really easy loading and unloading of the bikes. Basically it's a really simple and straightforward rack. It has just a single cradle here for each of our bike positions, you can see that here. And it's just going to use two hook and loop straps to come around and secure either our adapter by like this or the top tube on our bike. Now unlike bike racks that offered dual arms, this is going to help us when we need to load smaller frame items. The mountain bike that we have mounted up here, you'll see us load that up a little bit later, and basically it goes on with zero interference.

A lot of other bike racks that have the dual arms, we genuinely have to kind of pivot and move that bike rack to get it past either the large straps that hang out or the anti sway cradles that hang down. Now with the setup being like this, it doesn't offer any anti-sway, so the bikes are going to move forward and back. You could always take a strap around and kind of bring them together a little bit to try to eliminate it, but it's just going to be a nice basic, easy way to get your bikes to your favorite destination so you can enjoy them. You don't have to worry about trying to load them up on your roof or take them apart and shove them in the back of the vehicle where it might take up space. Now with checking out the reviews and in our experience here using it around the shop, this is a really heavy duty rack, it's very sturdy. The weight isn't all that much. It's about 30 pounds, so it's relatively easy to install it, especially with this single mass design that comes up.

It balances out pretty well as you're getting it installed. The rack itself is going to have a capacity of a hundred pounds. So you're going to be looking, you know, 33.33 pounds per bike and that should cover most of the range except for maybe like the heavier electric bikes or something like that. For security, while a cable lock isn't included, we have plenty available here at Etrailer.com you can see there are holes designed in here and also here so we could route that cable lock down and through, in and around all of our bikes and make sure that stays safe and protected. Also to increase visibility so people will know, maybe you don't have your bikes loaded up, we've got to reflector right here, so in the evening if lights hit it, it's going to shine and indicate that you've got something additional on the back of your vehicle that they need to be wary of.Now we do have the option to tilt this rack away from our vehicle with the bike loaded, but it is a very tough thing to do, once she get the weights of the bike on there. It's kinda gonna be a lot of weight as it tilts away, so just keep that in mind.

If you plan on doing that and it's extremely likely as it tilts down, your bike tires are going to wind up hitting the floor. So what we'll do is just pull the pin here. It's going to be the same if we want to tilt it away unloaded, and then you'll have to pull back on that mast to get the weight off the pin. Then at that point just kind of tilt it down. It's going to allow us to get stuff in or out of our back hatch or it looks like the spacing is going to be enough there. If you we're using this on a truck, you could probably open your tailgate.

Just be careful the first time and then again this is where that buddy will come in hand, probably helping to lift back up on those bikes. You can see that lanyard on the pin is helpful in helping you hang onto your pin, but sometimes it gets wrapped around the rack and makes it a little tough to use, and then in that case with our pin back in, we're ready to head down the road. Now while we've got all of our bikes loaded up here, we're going to head out to the test course so you can get a good look of what it's gonna look like on the back of your vehicle and the movement that you can expect from it.Now on the slalom course you're going to see as we shift side to side, the weight kind of causes the rack to move a little bit. Our customers have said the same thing, they do enjoy how even though it does move side to side, there's really no danger of our bikes coming off or any issues like that. We'll go into our alternating speed bumps next. That puts a little bit of a twisting action on the rack, like if you hit a curb or a pothole. Then we'll go right into the solid speed bumps. That's going to show the up and down movement in the rack, and in both of those it stays pretty steady. Now, of course with your bikes unloaded, you can also tilt your rack away. It's going to be a much easier process than with your bikes loaded, so that's just going to come down. Again, gives us great access into that rear cargo area. I think with this coming down as far as it does, you really shouldn't have any issues getting larger items loaded or unloaded. And then to bring it back up, we're just going to reverse that process. Slide our pin through and then just re secure it with the clip. Now a couple of measurements that are generally important to our customers are going to be how much room that you're going to need behind your vehicle, so let's say you wanted to park in your garage, but you didn't want to remove the rack each time. And in that case, from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the rack, it's going to be about 39 and a half inches. Another one to be concerned with is the proximity of the center mast here to the rear of your vehicle. It looks like here we're at about 12 and 7/8's 13 inches, so really as long as your hitch pin hole doesn't fit or it doesn't sit rather further than that underneath the back edge of your bumper should be in really good shape and in most instances, the hitch isn't going to be that far under it'd be really tough to use.The cradle configuration is pretty bike friendly. You can see on each side we're going to have these rubber bumpers for your top tube to sit down and in, that helps to some road shock and also protects the finish. And then we've got the two nice thick wide hook and loops there, one here and one here and it really does, that'd be from about as small as you want it to go, so even some of the larger tattoos on bikes, we really shouldn't have issues getting them to fit in. Now this is an excellent middle of the road type of rack as far as capacity with the three bikes. This is also going to come in a two bike version. It's designed for use on inch and a quarter only hitches and it does come in a four bike version so it a little bit longer, hold four bikes, but it's only available for two inch hitch configurations, so if you need dual use, if you need to use it for both vehicles, this is going to be a really good choice.Swagman also has one called the XP. It's a four bike rack as well. It's only going to be designed for two inch hitches, so you can't use it in the class two hitches, but it does have a lock on that rear knob as you tighten it down. I think this one's a little bit easier to use because we don't have the knobs to deal with and the plates at each section, but they're both really good racks and they would serve you well, especially if you've got that two inch hitch, XP might be a good option as well. Now to begin your installation, you first need to decide which of the shape configurations that you're going to use. In our case, we have a two inch receiver tube, two inches by two inches, so we'll leave the two piece adapter on. If you have an inch and a quarter class two, remember this is not designed for a class one hitch, but if you have a class two hitch, simply going to use the provided tool and we can take out the bolt. That'll then allow us to take the adapter off. Once that's off, we're left with an inch and a quarter shank to be able to slide into that hitch.Once you've got it configured the way we want, we can just slide that into our receiver tube opening there. And we're going to line up the hole with our hitch pin hole. We can thread in our anti rattle bolt. Now for this you are going to need a 19 millimeter or three quarter inch wrench or socket. If you don't already have one, we do have a kit that's already set up, we'll give you a ratchet handle and the socket. Then you can just leave that in the back of your car. It makes it easy anytime you want to get it installed. The other side, just slide on our clip, a little tight that way, we're just going the other way.And you can see, we've got a really nice solid connection point here. And at that point we'll be ready to load up the bikes. Now to get our bikes loaded, we need to undo the hook and loop straps that we have here on the top, and then the top tube on our bike will sit right down in that cradle. Bring your straps back around, get them nice and secure. Then we can move on to the next two bikes. Now you can see with our bikes loaded a few tips for you. You always want to start with your heaviest bike first and then get them lighter as you come back, and you can see with the center mass design like this and really for a lot of bikes on bike racks like this that aren't a platform style rack, if you're using the kid's bike, the area here can be pretty narrow. And also with a woman's bike, that frame tends to drop down that you could put it up on here, but your back wheels going to be kicked way up in the air, so we recommend using a bike adapter bar on those types of bikes or even alternative frame style mountain bikes, just so you can have everything sitting nice and flat and level. Now in my opinion and a lot of customers as well, it's a great bike rack. It's going to be something that it's going to get the job done and it's going to get it done without a lot of hassle loading, unloading, stuff like that. This would definitely be a bike rack I would own. I generally keep just less expensive bikes. It's not a major hobby of mine or anything, just trail riding every now and then and it's not something that I'm too worried about my bikes finish. If you're looking to protect the finish of your bike or you don't like the idea of them making contact together, a platform rack's going to be a better option, but to get three or four bike style platform racks are typically gonna weigh a lot. They're typically get also going to be much more expensive, so definitely something to consider there. All in all, it's going to be a great bike rack, gets excellent customer reviews, fits most vehicles. Remember not a class one hitch, but class two, three, four and five, it's gonna work out really well for.

I found the bike rake easy to assemble and to install. It does have some weight to it, heavier than my former rake. Loading and off loading of bikes is easy and it holds them securely with the straps. 146172

Excellent quality fits on my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with plenty of clearance of the spare tire. This was my primary concern, and I had no reason to worry! 388106

After I receive the rack I realized the it would not carry a woman's bike nor would it carry a mans bike without possibly damaging the brake and gear cables that travel under the cross bar. Therefore I have not used the rack 478419

They advertise great products at low prices and I couldnt agree more, they are cheaper than what I found locally, and also what is great is their really fast shipping, 24 hours to receive the trailer hitch I ordered and on the website was an instructional video which was very helpful since I am a do it yourselfer,so I then ordered a bike carrier and again fast shipping and of course cheaper than the local store, which the local store did not have in stock, they told me 7-10 days, so if youre looking for a fast reliable company for ordering on line this is a good one 492469

Great product. I got this for my 2002 Ford Ranger so I could put my bike outside the truck keeping the bed free for other gear on camping trips. Assembly was easy and fast its only 2 bolts with lock nuts and then the saddles attach with 2 small bolts super simple. Its made from thick metal so its heavy but strong. Installation into my (also from etrailer) 2 inch curt hitch is simple just slide it in the receiver and put the pin through. It dose move an wobble a little but as long as your hitch pin is in it can't fall out or disconnect I guess you could use some wood shims to stop its wobble if it bothers you but I'm not worried it can't hit anything or fall out so its fine. I love this bike rack I love my hitch receiver and I love etrailer where I got both. 141265

This item arrived quickly! It was easy to put together! Seems very well made. I like that the hitch I will flip to use either 1/4 or 2 inch receiver. Unlike some that I read about having plastic inserts. I feel it is worth the cost! Haven't put my bike on it yet. Oh and my hatch opens with out having to pull the pin and lower the rack. Which one can easily do to load the bikes. Another plus. 231186

This is the best bike rack I have owned. Easy , secure and versatile. I use on two vehicles. I supplement with a 12ft chain covered in old bicycle tubes to secure bikes and rack to vehicle tow hitch runaway chain loops. I use bungee cords to keep wheels from spinning and aligned straight during transit. I would recommend with reservation. I feel so strongly about this product I gave one as a Xmas present. 679389

Very easy to use, and I can get bikes on and off in seconds. etrailer delivered this product quickly. I have purchased many products from etrailer and they have never let me down. Their service is quick and efficient. I will purchase all of my future hitches and bike racks from them. They are a great company to deal with, and I have recommended them to both family and friends 659257

Bike rack is good overall but the part connecting to the hitch is poorly made. You are not going to be able to push it in unless you will grind down. Even after that the inserting rack into the hitch and taking it out is not easy task. For the price this rack should of been much better quality. 656030

Easy quick assembly. Disappointed that the carrier does not allow me to open the rear door of my Wrangler. It will tip down but the side plates that the tubes are mounted to still sit too high for the door to clear. 646615

Took a road trip with this bike rack and had no problems. It does sway and bounce a bit while on the highway, but held up well. It got rained on once and some of the hardware is starting to show superficial corrosion. Will defenitely be storing it indoors. 637399

Shipping was crazy fast. This is a solid rack at a great price. Much higher quality than a couple of others I looked at in this price range. It's going to be nice to be able to take the bikes along without taking them apart and wrestling them into the car. 603711

This is the best bike rack I have ever encountered. So much so I have one for myself and purchased another as a gift. It adapts to the two common receivers with minimal effort. Simple velcro bike attachments. (I use a bungee cord to keep the bike wheels from turning). I also for long distance/overnight travel have a chain covered in old bike inner tube that I use to secure the rack and bikes to the runaway chain loops on the car. This bike rack is simple, rugged, a great blend of form and function. I would recommend this bike rack without reservation. 590586

solid unit with decent paint. should last quite a while. reasonably priced, good service follow up. happy customer. 92207

still going. safety attachment for the tilt release pin didnt last long but not a problem. mounts and dismounts easily, hook and loop straps still work well. maybe side mounted reflectors/labels would be nice as it protrudes quite a bit and is somewhat unobtrusive when no bikes are mounted on it. still a happy customer.

Arrived quickly. Assembled in a few minutes. I've used it 3 or 4 times and it is easy to load and secure the bikes. The velcro straps are better than rubber. 137750

Just a follow-up note concerning the bike rack: it is the easiest, most efficient bike rack that I have seen - simple, inexpensive, and faster loading than any of those of my friends. They envy this one.

The bike rack was very easy to put together and it fit my Jeep perfectly. I wish I had followed the advice that I read before ordering that suggested I buy the lock for it. Perhaps you could include it as part of the package and increase the cost accordingly. 140447

Still love the bike rack a year later. Did the lock become part of the package? I have recommended this rack to many people.

Thanks for your follow up and feedback, a lock is not included with this bike rack but is listed as a related product.

I'm from Canada, and strong well made products like this tend to be hard to find, and quite expensive. I bought this bike rack, and the to carry it. Both are extremely well made and were an excellent price. I would definitely recommend these products. Note that someone who is quite petit may find this bike rack a bit heavy to move around and mount into the hitch. 554382

  • The Reese hitch bike racks part # 63123 and # 63124 do have different shank designs so that is why one is longer than the other. The part # 63124 does have 8 inches from it's pin hole to the upright mast of the rack whereas the part # 63123 has a distance of 10-1/2 inches. If you are trying to clear a spare tire this would be the better option most likely. You'll need to measure from the hitch pin to the furthest point out on the spare.

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch # 24963 Fit 2018 Hyunda Ioniq and Work with 1-1/4 inch Hitch Bike Racks
  • The Draw Tite hitch part # 24963 that you referenced is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Hyundai Ioniq and is a 1-1/4 inch hitch like what the bike racks # 63123 and # HR6500 you mentioned require. The hitch opening may look smaller in the pictures but it is a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

  • Hitch Pin Hole on 3 Bike Hitch Mount Rack # 63123 Wont Line Up with Hole on Hidden Hitch Receiver
  • I think that I may know what the problem is. If you are attempting to use the 3 Bike Hitch Mount Folding Rack with Rotating Shank, # 63123, in a Class I, 1-1/4 inch hitch, this will not work. This bike rack fits Class II 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitch receivers. To keep someone from overloading a Class I hitch, manufacturers place a stopper in the back of Class I hitch receivers so that drawbars and accessory shanks can only slide into the trailer hitch opening up to that point. On hitch...

  • Bike Rack for a 2008 Toyota RAV4
  • The Reese 3 Bike rack, # 63123, measures 10-1/2" or 11-1/2" inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright bar depending on if you have a 2" receiver or a 1-1/4" receiver respectively. While this may work for your vehicle and spare tire combination you need to measure from the center of your hitch pin hole to the farthest back part of the spare tire to be sure. If you find that this will not fit your application we have other options that may work. A spare tire...

  • When Does the Shank Rise Occur On the Reese 3 Bike Rack
  • The Reese 3 Bike Rack part # 63123 does indeed have a shank rise. I went out to our warehouse for you to measure the shank and I think it will work with your Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount part # D210 and Sylvan Go Sport Trailer. The rise portion of the shank starts at about 4-1/2" away from the center of the hitch pin hole and by the time you get to 6-1/2" out, there is 1-1/4" in rise when measuring from the bottom of the bend to the bottom of the shank (with adapter). The distance from...

  • Inexpensive 3-Bike Trailer hitch Mount Bike Rack for a 2015 Toyota RAV4
  • Since your 2015 Toyota RAV4 has a 2 inch trailer hitch that will afford you many bike rack options. For a 3-bike rack that fits 2 inch trailer hitches I recommend # 63123. I have included a link to a video review of this rack for you. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground...

  • Is Reese # 63123 Bike Rack Compatible With Girls Bikes
  • The Reese # 63123 bike rack can carry women's or girls bikes, but using an adapter bar like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter bar spans the distance between the seat post and the handlebar gooseneck, providing a top tube like a men's bike would have. This provides a level attachment point for the bike, allowing the bike to be carried level. If the bike is carried at an angle, you might have ground clearance problems. If you click the provided link, you can see how the adapter...

  • Key Dimensions of Reese 3 Bike Hitch Mount Folding Rack 63123
  • The key dimensions to consider when selecting a hitch bike rack like the Reese 3 Bike Hitch Mount Folding Rack # 63123 are the hitch sizes it will fit and the clearance it provides at the back of the vehicle. This Reese rack fits BOTH 1-1/4-inch Class II and 2-inch Class III hitches. The shank portion rotates to give you the choice of shank size. When used in a 1-1/4-inch hitch it provides 11-1/2-inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole; in a 2-inch hitch is provides 10-1/2-inches...

  • I can't confirm that fit, but I can tell you how you can with a simple measurement. If you measure from the center of your hitch pin hole to the outermost part of your tire, you will get your clearance needed. The 3 Bike Hitch Mount Folding Rack w/ Rotating Shank, Frame Mount Cradles for 1-1/4" and 2" # 63123 has a clearance from the hitch pin hole to the upright brace of 10-1/2 inches in the 2 inch configuration. • Can a Class II Three Bike Rack be Used with a Draw-Tite Trailer Class I Hitch on a 2008 Rondo by Kia
  • The only hitches available for the Kia Rondo are Class I hitches, like the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Hitch, item # 24797. Class I hitches are limited to 2 bikes because of the torque applied to the hitch and vehicle frame by the weight of the bikes and bike rack and the distance they stick out behind the vehicle. The Reese Hitch Bike Rack, item # 63123 will not work in a Class I hitch because there is a stop located in the receiver that limits the hitch to the installation of Class...

  • How to Secure Bikes and a Trunk Mount or Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack to a Vehicle
  • For pretty much any bike rack ranging from a trailer hitch mount rack like # 63123 to a trunk mount like the Thule Passage 3, # TH911XT, you can use a cable lock to secure the bikes to the rack. The 10 Foot Long Cable Lock, # CAB-10, would be a good choice because it is not bike rack specific. All you have to do is wind the cable through the bikes and around the rack and you can secure both to the safety chain loop on the hitch or a tow hook underneath the vehicle. The cable is coated...

If you do already have a hitch then as long as it is not a Class I hitch you can use the bike rack. It will easily clear the back of your 2016 Hyundai Tucson. • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2002 Honda CR-V for Carrying 3 Bikes

If this is the case, then this trailer hitch will work with any hitch mounted bike rack that was designed to fit a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch shank. We also offer a larger 3-3/16-inch reflector, part # RE21RB, which is also self-stick. Since there is no visible retaining screw for the reflector on the rack, chances are it too is a self-stick type.

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack for a 2011 Toyota RAV4 with Class II Trailer Hitch
  • The first thing you are going to want to do is measure from the center of the hitch pin hole back to the distance required to clear the spare tire. The bike rack that you choose will need to extend further out than the measurement you come up with. The rack you mentioned, # S64675, is designed to fit 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. This bike rack will only fit in a Class II, 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch. The hitches for your Miata are all going to be Class I hitches. This hitch can carry any bike rack that is designed for use in a Class I hitch and allowS you to tow a small trailer, should your needs change in the future. Carrying the bike in a tilted position could put stress on the Velcro straps that retain the bike to the rack.
