Video Transcript for Malone Hanger Hitch Bike Rack Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Malone 00:00:00 hanger four bike rack for inch and a quarter, and two inch hitches. Part number MPG2124.The Malone hanger four bike rack can carry up to four bikes ranging from mountain bikes, to alternate frame bikes, to road bikes, as well as kids bikes - although, those may require the use of an adapter bar, which is sold separately. It holds your bike at two points of contact, and that's gonna be up at your frame here; we're gonna have one up at the top, and one off to the side and that's gonna serve as an anti-sway cradle to keep your bike from moving too far back and forth, and causing bike to bike contact. It also has two stabilization straps to keep your bikes in place while you travel. And, for security purposes, we have this integrated cable lock that comes out of the mast and secures up at the front, and this is to prevent theft of your bikes. We also have this foam pad and cover at the main mast here, and that's to protect the frame of your bike from scratches and abrasions should it make contact with the mast while you travel. The cradles are also adjustable back and forth on the arms here, and this is to help accommodate loading.

To move them back and forth, there is a Phillips head screw at the bottom, and there is a tool that comes with the bike rack to do this so you can adjust it on your own.We went ahead and removed the bikes to show off some of the other features. Looking in the cradles here, you can see the soft material that they're made of there, and they also have these channels in them so your cables can rest in there instead of being pressed up or crushed against the frame. At the ends of both arms, we do have this reflective material for better visibility at night. And, also, for close quarter situations, such as parking or putting this in your garage, these arms do fold down for additional clearance. You come to the passenger side where we have this turn knob, loosen that up, then we'll fold it down, realigning the holes here and here, and simply tighten up our knob again.Another nice feature is the fact that this can tilt away from the vehicle to gain rear hatch access.

To do that, we'll come to the base of our bike rack, start loosening the second knob down here, again all the way. Instead of having to push it down, it has a convenient foot pedal to it, you just push down like so, let the bike come forward, and now we have full access to our rear hatch to get what we need.It has a carry capacity of four bikes, with a load capacity of 33 pounds per bike. And it does have unlimited lifetime warranty. But, comparing this with other bike racks, one that comes up is the Thule Hitching Post Pro four bike rack. While the Malone holds your bike at two points, the Thule is going to have three points of contact with your bike, and that's going to be two straps up at the top and one off to the side.

The Thule does work with class one through three hitches, although since it is a four bike rack, they do recommend they only use two bikes for your class one and class two. The Malone is rated for class two to class three hitches. The Malone does come with locks included for your anti-rattle bolt and your integrated cable lock, while the locks are not included with the Thule Hitching Post Pro.Now that we've gone over some of the features of the Malone Hanger four, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. First, lift our bike rack up, we'll set it into position lining up with our hitch, and then we'll line up our pin holes and install our anti-rattle device and lock. We'll tighten it down with our included tool, so you don't need any additional tools to tie this down to your vehicle.

And, as you can see, there's no shake and play in the shank, that means it's tightened down properly.Next, we have a pin, push that through. We have our locking end, we'll put that in as well. Lock that in place. All right, now our bike rack is secured to our vehicle. We're gonna fold up our arms to put it into loading position. To do that, there's this knob on the passengers side, just unscrew that completely. This knob will come out. Tilt it up until these two holes line up. And then just simply reinstall the knob, and tighten it down. Now that we have this folded out, we can start loading up our bikes. First, we want to make sure that all of our cradles are in the proper spots and are tightened down. To tighten these down, you see these screws at the bottom You inaudible 00:04:43 them down with a Phillips head screwdriver once you have it in the proper spot. Next, we'll come to the end here, lift up this tab, and that'll release our straps on both sides. Now, we'll grab our first bike. All right. And then we're gonna take our straps, wrap them around our frame here, and tighten them down. When it comes to loading your bikes, you want to make sure that you put the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle, and then work your way out. This bike rack comes with two red stabilization straps and we'll go ahead and install those now as well. Starting with the one that's gonna be wrapped around the top frames of our bikes. We'll first thread it through the top part of our arms here, on our mast. Just ease these through like that, and then wrap around our frames. They go up to the front eventually. Make sure you go around the actual frames of the bikes though. So, we'll take our one end, feed that through our buckle here, and pull it as tight as we can. And there's not gonna be much there, just with how many bikes we have on our rack right now. Our second strap is gonna be a little less involved, as it just wraps around our top two here, of our front most bike. We'll wrap it around our mast, and then we'll wrap it around the bottom portion of our front most bike. All right, I'll tie up the excess.Last thing we're gonna do is install our integrated cable lock, then we can show this on our test course, show you how this bike rack looks.First, we'll take it on to our slalom course. This will show you the side to side action, such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now, we're at the alternating speed bumps. This will show you how it looks driving on uneven pavement or potholes. Finally, we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lots. And there you have it for the Malone Hanger four bike rack for inch and a quarter, and two inch hitches. Part number MPG2124.

Review from a similar Malone Hanger in Hitch Bike Racks

We are infrequent users, but this is exactly what we were looking for. It carries all three of our bikes. It is easy on and off. After some adjusting it holds a male mtn bike, female hybrid (I still recommend the adapter, but when I load it I don't have to tie into it), and male kids BMX easily and securely. It folds down pretty easily, so we still have access to the back hatch on our 2013 Ford Escape. It came with the locking cable for the bikes and lock for the hitch bolt. We previously used a strap on rack and it was nice, but didn't feel as secure. Every time I break it out for a trip my wife and I both remark about what a great buy it was and how happy we are knowing we don't have to worry about the bikes on our trips. 691441

Review from a similar Malone Hanger in Hitch Bike Racks

With two bikes on the rack for an extended highway road trip, it's basically impossible to keep the rack still, it moves around quite a bit leaving scuff/blemishes on the car. My car is brand new so needless to say I was disappointed to say the least. I did tighten the straps as best I could, without ripping them them off completely and re-tighten throughout my trip but the problem remained. Also the two top straps rub on the paint leaving scuff/blemishes in the paint. Also several of the rubber straps that hold the bike onto the rack came off several times throughout the trip. I'm not sure this rack is meant for highway speeds for long periods of time. I'm overall Disappointed. I don't like to give negative feedback.Looking to put on a hitch mounted rack. 570303

Comments

I do recommend a hitch mounted rack for longer trips at highway speeds. If you need a hitch for the 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon I recommend etrailer hitch part # E98847. This class 3 hitch offers a tongue weight rating of 600 lbs, it will work well for carrying bikes on a bike rack. The etrailer hitch is matte black and corrosion resistant so it will look great on your brand new Subaru. For a hitch mounted bike rack I recommend the Thule hitching post pro part # TH934XTR. This bike rack will carry 4 bikes and features a built-in anti-rattle bolt that secures the rack to your hitch and reduces vibration and noise.

I have to say that the design elements of this rack are extraordinary and the price is $100 less than Thule et al. Even better is that they are manufactured in my home state of Maine. 546622

Looks like a well made product and is simple to put together. However, I am unable to use it as the top of the vertical support (which curves back towards the vehicle) hits the hatch on my 2018 Range Rover HSE. 690033

Review from a similar Malone Hanger in Hitch Bike Racks

Really nice bike rack. Fits a 2011 Outback with no issue. I was hesitant to get a rack that hangs on the back of the car because I was worried about scratches/damage to the finish etc. This unit comes with nicely coated strap hooks and the bumpers seem to protect well. Obviously you want to install the rack when your car is clean to prevent surface dirt from marring the finish. The rack is easy to position and holds three bikes well. The bike straps are sturdy yet flexible and the fold down option is nice when the rack is not in use. Overall very pleased. 672129

Review from a similar Malone Hanger in Hitch Bike Racks

Everything was perfect, got it delivered sooner than I thought. It was pretty easy to assemble, I have used it once so far with one bike it was easy to use and I felt very comfortable driving down the road with the anti-sway. Also loving the locks that come with it. This is my first hitch mount rack but so far I am really glad I bought it! 665098

Do you have a question about this Hitch Bike Rack?

  • 4-Bike Hanging-Style Hitch Rack for Use in 1-1/4-Inch and 2-Inch Hitches
  • Thule's Hitching Post Pro hitch bike rack # TH934XTR has a shipping weight of 41-lbs, so by the time you remove the packaging materials from the equation the rack's actual weight is right around 38-lbs. This is a fairly average weight for a 4-bike rack. This USA-made 4-bike carrier offers excellent value and the flexibility to work well in both 1-1/4-inch hitches and the 2-inch hitches made for your 2016 Toyota Highlander. For a similar 4-bike hanging-style rack that weighs a lot less...

  • How to Secure Girl's Bike without Cross Tube on Hanging Style Bike Rack
  • In order to transport a girl's bike (or any bike with alternative style frames) to a hanging rack like the Malone Hanger 4 Bike Rack # MPG2124, you will just need a bike frame adapter bar. I recommend the Kuat # UB01 because of how easy it installs. This will connect to your bike's seat post and handlebar stem post to provide a horizontal attachment point for the bike rack. This will ensure level transport and improved ground clearance. I have included an image that shows how this works...

  • Can a Hitch Extender be Used with Malone Hanger Bike Rack on a 2005 Hyundai Tucson
  • That Malone bike rack, # MPG2124, really does have sort of a backwards lean doesn't it. I looked through the literature for the bike rack and there is nothing stating that you can't use an extension and since that is the only way the rack will clear the back of your 2005 Hyundai Tucson you would have to use an extension. Like you said, the use of an extension reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. For hitch # 13526 the tongue weight capacity is normally...

  • Will An Eco Hitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Carry 4 Bikes On A 2017 Chevy Bolt EV
  • The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7359 will fit your 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV and provides a 2" receiver that accommodates a 4-bike carrier. That said a significant limiting factor here is that from our research your vehicle tow capacity looks to be 100 lbs tongue weight and 1,000 lbs total trailer weight on your vehicle. Should you still decide to pursue this route, a bike rack like the Reese Q-Slot Platform-Style 2 Bike and 4 Bike Rack for 2" Hitches # PS63138 is 66lbs...

If you plan on carrying any womens or alternative framed bikes without horizontal top tubes you may also be interested in purchasing a Kuat Bike Frame Adapter Bar # UB01 to provide a horizontal top tube on your bikes to provide an attachment point. I attached a review video for this product also. This will allow the bikes to be carried more level and will provide...
