Video Transcript for Hollywood Racks TRS 2-Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hollywood Rack's TRS Platform style two bike rack for two inch hitches, part number HR 3500. This platform style two bike rack will hold most styles of bikes with no frame contact. As you can see it's even fat bike ready right out of the box. One of its best features is it has the ability to tilt away with bikes loaded so we can gain access to our rear hatch. To do that we'll come down here, we'll disconnect the clip on the other side, pull out the pin, you may need to slight lift up on the rack then we can come to our spring pin, pull out and then as you can see, we've got plenty of room to remove any gear that we may have with us. To put it back in place, we can just lift up here at the rear until it snaps in and then we can replace our pin and clip. Our bikes are held in place in four locations. We have an adjustable wheel hook going over our front wheel, a wheel stop and a wheel strap.

We have an additional wheel strap here for our back tire. I've gone ahead and removed our bikes so we can go over some additional features. Our wheels stops will hold tire sizes up to four and a half inches wide. All of our wheel straps are adjustable along the tray to fit bikes with different wheel bases. They're easy to use with the quick release. Our ratcheting wheel hooks are padded to grip our tire and they're going to work with most diameter tires. Here are the end of our rack we have two reflectors to help keep it more visible at night.

When not in use everything folds flat. By doing so it allows us more clearance for pulling in our garage or any type of parking. We'll pull out that bottom spring pin, rotate it up until it snaps in. We'll go ahead and get some clearance measurements. When folded down the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the bike rack is thirty inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack is eight and a half inches.

With the bike rack folded up the distance form the center to the hitch pin hole to the end of the rack is sixteen inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack is six and a half inches. Our frame is a sturdy steel construction with a black powder coat finish while our trays are made out of an anodized aluminum. Both of which are going to resist rust and corrosion. It has a weight capacity of fifty pounds per bike and features a limited lifetime warranty. Our wheel straps are adjustable along the tray and they're going to fit a maximum wheel base of up to forty eight inches. Customers on our site are comparing this to the Thule T2Pro XT.

Other than the position of the tilting handle, they're very similar racks. The Thule T2 can be expanded to carry four bikes while the Hollywood Racks can not. However, the Hollywood Rack's TRS is the more economical solution. Now that we've got all the features I'll go ahead and show you how we can get it installed. First thing we can do is go ahead and feed our shank into the receiver tube. Then we're going to push it all the way in until we hit that welded on tab on top. Then we can take our included pin and lock, we can slide that through on either side then clip on our lock. Then we can make our way back here to our anti rattle handle. We're going to spin it clockwise and by doing so it's going to tighten up and reduce all the play and the rattle within our receiver and our bike rack to make a nice solid ride for our bikes. Just give it a good turn, as you can see, no rattle. In preparation for loading up our bikes we'll need to lower it down into the platform position. We can locate our spring pin here we're going to pull it out, lower it down until that second spring pin snaps into position. Now lets raise up our wheel stop and then fold out our wheel hook and raise it up. Then we can undo our front and rear wheel straps. It's a good idea to load up the heaviest bike first. For us, it's going to be our fat tire bike. We'll make sure that our front wheel goes into our wheel stop then we'll swing the rear wheel around and set it on the tray. With it in position we can raise up our wheel hook and it's going to stop right here in front of our brake caliper or or fork, which ever comes first, lower it down, once it makes contact we'll give it a big push. Now we can secure our wheel straps. We can adjust it along the wheel tray here, make sure it goes between our spokes, feed it down, then pull it nice and snug. Same thing for the front here. I've gone ahead and loaded up my mountain bike the same way as my fat tire bike and I've also run my cable lock. When you run your cable lock, you just want to be sure to go through your frames and around your bike rack. Now let's take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our slalom. This is going to show side to side action such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show a twisting action such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. Then finally over our solid speed bumps, this is going to show an up and down action such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look of the Hollywood Rack's TRS Platform Style two bike rack for two inch hitches part number HR3500.

Read the reviews online and found they were correct when I purchased, received, and assembled this product. I am happy with its apparent sturdiness and quality. My only disappointment is that it doesn’t have a feature that would allow the mounted bikes to be swung down to allow rear hatch access when needed to get access to the interior of the vehicle from the back. Assembly was reasonably easy. I would suggest that the instructions specify that the bolts that attach the crates to the frame are supposed to hang loose in the long slot on the underside, but I think it might be easier to assemble if the carriage bolts had pre-drilled holes in the top side of the cradles that lined up with the holes in the frame. 656671

Comments

Actually, the rack is capable of being tilted rearward away from the vehicle while the bikes are in place, as shown in the video Ive linked for you. The geometry of the rear hatch opening and the nature of the bikes involved will dictate if the rear hatch of the vehicle will clear the bikes allowing full cargo area access, but on most vehicles the hatch will clear.

This is our second Hollywood bicycle carrier. The first one is still in use as needed or loaned to friends. Our new carrier is for my wife's Subaru Outback mostly for our fat bikes and ease of use for her convenience. The carrier arrived in perfect shape and in a timely manner. Instructions were easy to follow and the tools included do an adequate job, although I used my wratchet set to speed things up. I took my time and still ackomlished the build in under an hour. This is a very sturdy unit made of nice materials and should last years. I don't know if I would have gotten any better product at twice the price. I had a very pleasant buying experience with etrailer and would recommend them to anyone. 512564

After almost a year and to be honest I havent given it much thought. Thats a good thing because it performs perfectly. It stays on the vehicle most of the time and is always ready to use. We live on a gravel road and no damage. Would buy another if needed if it were hit or stolen.

We were able to assemble the bike rack without too much problem and so far really like it. The bikes fit on very well and we especially like the fact we can still open our SUV back hatch with bikes still on. We haven’t done a big road test yet but feel the rack is very stable. 615761

This fit perfectly on the back of my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK. The assembly instructions along with a YouTube video made putting it together pretty easy. I love the hinge pin lock and bike lock. Can’t wait to take the bikes on the road! 552905

My husband and I have been raving to each other about how the etrailer site was the best site we have ever visited and ordered from, the information given was more than thorough, the prices were good, the customer service was speedy and knowledgeable, the shipment came faster than expected. The bike rack was high quality, easy to put together, fits our vehicle as the etrailer rep said it would, the bikes are easy to load and tilt, and it all travels securely. The shipment came without the hitch and bike locks, but etrailer immediately contacted the Hollywood company who honored their part list and sent it in time for our trip. Two etrailer reps kept in contact with each other and us through it all. We are extremely satisfied all around and wish we had this experience with all other businesses! 529645

This is one well built thoughtfully engineered bike rack. How do I know.....this is the third brand I ordered. I returned the other two. I have a Grand Cherokee and two fat bikes. I wanted a rack that could tilt with bikes on board to allow the dog access to cargo space. This is easy to load, tilts by removing one pin, and very stable due to the hitch tightening system. Well done Hollywood!! 576266

I had been researching platform bike carriers for a while and after comparing several i settled on the Hollywood Racks TRS SE, it seemed to fulfill all my requirements and at a great price from etrailer. I watched the installation and test course videos and promptly added it to my cart, shipping was fast and the rack arrived in good condition. Assembly was easy, although I did not time it, every thing went together seamlessly. I have a pickup truck and was hoping that I could open the tailgate while the bike rack was tilted down, no luck but it gives plenty of access to get in the canopy and bed anyway. We'll be hauling two 27+ mountain bikes with large (not fat) tires ant this rack accommodates them perfectly without needing to buy additional accessories. 597040

I purchased the 3500 model for a 2-inch hitch for my 2004 Toyota 4Runner. I've had it for a month now and it has worked well. It took just over an hour to assemble it and the instructions for the most part were easy to follow although it would behoove you to read it through once before you even start putting parts together. The rack has pretty much stayed on the vehicle for the past month and I use it two to three times a week to commute to work. The bike is on the rack for the 26 miles roundtrip to the ferry terminal and it hasn't given me any problems. Service and prompt delivery was much appreciated. I even noted that the link for installation instructions was broken and Anna responded immediately and I now see that it is there! One thing that my photos will show is that if you have a flat handlebar bike in the position closest to the vehicle the hatch may not fully open because the handlebar will prevent it. Not an issue with me since I use it for commuting and don't need to access the hatch. I think the price is worth it since I wanted this type of rack and it was difficult to find anything with this quality and features in the range. Four stars only because I've only had it for only a month so not sure how well it will hold up in the months to come. I also much appreciate the videos of the rack on the etrailer website. Thanks, etrailer! Arthur 483714

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

The Hollywood HR3000 is a very solid and well thought out platform bike rack. There were no missing parts and the instructions were not difficult to follow. We have a Subaru Forester and the rack installed, mounted and folded easily and worked as advertised. I'v used it once to carry a cyclocross bike and a mountain bike and both loaded and unloaded with no problems. The construction is "beefy" and should last a long time. It is a vast improvement over my previous rack and the extra cost is well worth it. 490869

The rack worked nicely on its first short trip - easy to load, secure, and stable. I intentionally drove through some substantial dips to test it - very stable. Assembly was less daunting than it first appeared. So far - great rack and good price. 515599

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

I've had this hitch for a day and used it just once on my Miata (class 2). Going on a trip tomorrow and will use it on a Nissan Frontier pickup (class 3). It seems like a quality hitch for a very good price. I feel like buying one of those other brands (named after cities) you are paying a premium for the brand name. Hollywood provides a great value without gouging my wallet. I like the aluminum rails and the entire system is easy to use. Just holding off one star since I've only had it for a day. As a bonus it arrived a day earlier than it was scheduled! 426883

Ask the Experts about this Hollywood Racks Hitch Bike Racks
Do you have a question about this Hitch Bike Rack?

  • Recommended 2-Bike Platform Style Hitch Bike Rack for Use on 30-Foot Trailer
  • You are correct that any bike rack that will be used on the back of a trailer or other RV must be strong enough to withstand the extra vertical and lateral stress forces found at the back of such vehicles. There are extra stresses on RVs due to the greater distance between the rear axle and the hitch tube; this greater distance translates into more leverage applied to the rack, and so RV racks are built to be extra-sturdy. • Which is a Better Bike Rack Between the RockyMounts MonoRail and the Hollywood Racks TRS
  • Hollywood Racks makes a good bike rack. But with that said I am not impressed with the TRS # HR3000 or # HR3500. I find that the RockyMounts MonoRail # RKY10003 is the superior bike rack between the 2. I will say this about the TRS though; the hook design is compatible with bikes that wider forks compared to the MonoRail. The MonoRail is compatible with Class I hitches whereas the TRS is compatible with Class II only on the 1-1/4 inch side. Both are compatible with 2 inch hitches. All...

Instead, I recommend the RockyMounts MonoRail 2 Bike Platform Rack part # RKY10003 which has all of the features that you liked and needed in the above; 60 lb per bike weight capacity, 1-1/4" trailer hitch compatibility, folding for storage, wheel mount, black in color, and it comes with both bike and...

For that you'd want the part # HR3000 that you mentioned as well. This is designed to fit both hitch sizes and would be a great option. That is consistent with what we have found when installing the hitch (see video link). • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack for a E-Bike with Fat Tires and 2017 Subaru Outback
  • Does your 2017 Subaru Outback have the factory 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch? If so that is going to be a problem. That hitch was designed with a hitch pin hole very close to the receiver opening. This means that there isn't enough of a bike rack's shank that will be inside of the receiver to safely and properly support most bike racks. In order to carry a 70 pound fat e-bike you will need to have a Class III, 2 inch trailer hitch, # 75673 or # 306-X7266, in order to use the one bike rack...
