Video Transcript for Hollywood Racks TRS 2-Bike Platform Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hollywood Racks TRS Platform-Style 2-Bike Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches, part number HR3000. This platform-style 2-bike rack will carry most styles of bikes without any frame contact. It even carries fat bikes with tires up to 4-1/2" wide straight out of the box. Our bikes are held in place with 4 points of contact. Here on the front tire, we have a wheel hook, a wheel stop, and a wheel strap. We have another wheel strap here in the back. One if its best features is it has the ability to tilt away from our vehicle even with both bikes loaded. The way you do that is locate the safety pin and clip here. We'll take off the clip first.

You may need to slightly pick up on the bike rack to take it out. Then we'll come over to our spring pin and pull that out. Then we'll let it rest. Then as you can see, we've got plenty of room to open up our rear hatch to remove any cargo, gear, groceries, anything we might have with us on our trip. To put it back in place, we'll simply pick up on it here in the rear until it snaps in. Then we can replace our safety pin and clip. We've gone ahead and removed our bikes so we can go over some additional features.

The wheel stop will hold tires up to 4-1/2" of width. All of our wheel straps are adjustable along the tray to accommodate wheel bases up to 48". The quick release design makes them easy to use. The ratcheting wheel hook is padded to grip our tire, and it's adjustable to accommodate many different tire diameters. Here at the rear, we have two reflectors to help it remain visible at night. This allows us to fold up against the vehicle for compact storage.

We'll come down to that same spring pin that we used to tilt it away, pull out, lift up until it snaps in. This is great for parking or pulling in your garage. Now we'll go ahead and give you some clearance dimensions. When folded down, the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the bike rack is 40". From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack is 8-1/4". When folded up, the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the bike rack is 16".

The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack is 6-1/2". The frame is a sturdy steel construction with a black powder-coat finish. The trays are an anodized aluminum, both of which are going to resist rust and corrosion. It has a weight capacity of 50 pounds per bike and features a limited, lifetime warranty. Now that we've got all the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. I've already got my 2" adapter installed on my shank. Please keep in mind that if you're just using the 1-1/4" shank, it's for Class II hitches only. Since I have my adapter installed, I can plug it into my Class III hitch here. Then we'll just line up our pin holes. Once we've got them lined up, we can take our included anti-rattle bolt and clip and thread that through on either side. Once we get that hand tightened, we can take our included tool and tighten it the rest of the way down. Then finally, once we have it tight, we'll put on our clip. Now in preparation for loading up our bikes, we'll need to lower it down into the platform position. You can do that by locating the spring pin here on the bottom, pull it out, lower it down until it snaps into position. We'll also need to raise up our wheel stop and then raise up our wheel hook and up and then undo our front and rear straps. Now it's a good idea to load up your heaviest bike first. For us, it's going to be our fat-tire bike. We'll set our front wheel into that wheel stop and then the rear wheel into the tray. With our bike in position, first thing we can do is raise up our wheel hook. It's going to end up right in front of our fork or our brake caliper, whatever comes first. Then we'll bring it down. Once it makes contact, we'll give it a good push, and then we can move on. For our rear wheel strap, we can adjust it back on the tray, go between our spokes, adjust our pad so it's directly in the middle of our wheel, bring it through, and then pull it nice and tight. We can do the same for the front. I've gone ahead and loaded up my second bike the same way. Now let's go ahead and take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our slalom. This is going to show us side-to-side action such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show us twisting actions such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. Then finally onto our solid speed bumps. This is going to show an up-and-down action such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look at the Hollywood Racks TRS Platform-Style 2-Bike Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches, part number HR3000.

The Hollywood HR3000 is a very solid and well thought out platform bike rack. There were no missing parts and the instructions were not difficult to follow. We have a Subaru Forester and the rack installed, mounted and folded easily and worked as advertised. I'v used it once to carry a cyclocross bike and a mountain bike and both loaded and unloaded with no problems. The construction is "beefy" and should last a long time. It is a vast improvement over my previous rack and the extra cost is well worth it. 490869

The rack worked nicely on its first short trip - easy to load, secure, and stable. I intentionally drove through some substantial dips to test it - very stable. Assembly was less daunting than it first appeared. So far - great rack and good price. 515599

I've had this hitch for a day and used it just once on my Miata (class 2). Going on a trip tomorrow and will use it on a Nissan Frontier pickup (class 3). It seems like a quality hitch for a very good price. I feel like buying one of those other brands (named after cities) you are paying a premium for the brand name. Hollywood provides a great value without gouging my wallet. I like the aluminum rails and the entire system is easy to use. Just holding off one star since I've only had it for a day. As a bonus it arrived a day earlier than it was scheduled! 426883

We use this rack frequently to haul bikes to our favorite riding places. We also used it to transport our son's bike across the country. This rack is easy to use and works great. 574987

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

Read the reviews online and found they were correct when I purchased, received, and assembled this product. I am happy with its apparent sturdiness and quality. My only disappointment is that it doesn’t have a feature that would allow the mounted bikes to be swung down to allow rear hatch access when needed to get access to the interior of the vehicle from the back. Assembly was reasonably easy. I would suggest that the instructions specify that the bolts that attach the crates to the frame are supposed to hang loose in the long slot on the underside, but I think it might be easier to assemble if the carriage bolts had pre-drilled holes in the top side of the cradles that lined up with the holes in the frame. 656671

Comments

Actually, the rack is capable of being tilted rearward away from the vehicle while the bikes are in place, as shown in the video Ive linked for you. The geometry of the rear hatch opening and the nature of the bikes involved will dictate if the rear hatch of the vehicle will clear the bikes allowing full cargo area access, but on most vehicles the hatch will clear.

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

This is our second Hollywood bicycle carrier. The first one is still in use as needed or loaned to friends. Our new carrier is for my wife's Subaru Outback mostly for our fat bikes and ease of use for her convenience. The carrier arrived in perfect shape and in a timely manner. Instructions were easy to follow and the tools included do an adequate job, although I used my wratchet set to speed things up. I took my time and still ackomlished the build in under an hour. This is a very sturdy unit made of nice materials and should last years. I don't know if I would have gotten any better product at twice the price. I had a very pleasant buying experience with etrailer and would recommend them to anyone. 512564

After almost a year and to be honest I havent given it much thought. Thats a good thing because it performs perfectly. It stays on the vehicle most of the time and is always ready to use. We live on a gravel road and no damage. Would buy another if needed if it were hit or stolen.

We were able to assemble the bike rack without too much problem and so far really like it. The bikes fit on very well and we especially like the fact we can still open our SUV back hatch with bikes still on. We haven’t done a big road test yet but feel the rack is very stable. 615761

This fit perfectly on the back of my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK. The assembly instructions along with a YouTube video made putting it together pretty easy. I love the hinge pin lock and bike lock. Can’t wait to take the bikes on the road! 552905

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

My husband and I have been raving to each other about how the etrailer site was the best site we have ever visited and ordered from, the information given was more than thorough, the prices were good, the customer service was speedy and knowledgeable, the shipment came faster than expected. The bike rack was high quality, easy to put together, fits our vehicle as the etrailer rep said it would, the bikes are easy to load and tilt, and it all travels securely. The shipment came without the hitch and bike locks, but etrailer immediately contacted the Hollywood company who honored their part list and sent it in time for our trip. Two etrailer reps kept in contact with each other and us through it all. We are extremely satisfied all around and wish we had this experience with all other businesses! 529645

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

I had been researching platform bike carriers for a while and after comparing several i settled on the Hollywood Racks TRS SE, it seemed to fulfill all my requirements and at a great price from etrailer. I watched the installation and test course videos and promptly added it to my cart, shipping was fast and the rack arrived in good condition. Assembly was easy, although I did not time it, every thing went together seamlessly. I have a pickup truck and was hoping that I could open the tailgate while the bike rack was tilted down, no luck but it gives plenty of access to get in the canopy and bed anyway. We'll be hauling two 27+ mountain bikes with large (not fat) tires ant this rack accommodates them perfectly without needing to buy additional accessories. 597040

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

This is one well built thoughtfully engineered bike rack. How do I know.....this is the third brand I ordered. I returned the other two. I have a Grand Cherokee and two fat bikes. I wanted a rack that could tilt with bikes on board to allow the dog access to cargo space. This is easy to load, tilts by removing one pin, and very stable due to the hitch tightening system. Well done Hollywood!! 576266

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks TRS in Hitch Bike Racks

I purchased the 3500 model for a 2-inch hitch for my 2004 Toyota 4Runner. I've had it for a month now and it has worked well. It took just over an hour to assemble it and the instructions for the most part were easy to follow although it would behoove you to read it through once before you even start putting parts together. The rack has pretty much stayed on the vehicle for the past month and I use it two to three times a week to commute to work. The bike is on the rack for the 26 miles roundtrip to the ferry terminal and it hasn't given me any problems. Service and prompt delivery was much appreciated. I even noted that the link for installation instructions was broken and Anna responded immediately and I now see that it is there! One thing that my photos will show is that if you have a flat handlebar bike in the position closest to the vehicle the hatch may not fully open because the handlebar will prevent it. Not an issue with me since I use it for commuting and don't need to access the hatch. I think the price is worth it since I wanted this type of rack and it was difficult to find anything with this quality and features in the range. Four stars only because I've only had it for only a month so not sure how well it will hold up in the months to come. I also much appreciate the videos of the rack on the etrailer website. Thanks, etrailer! Arthur 483714

Solid rack. I feel very secure driving with 2 bikes on this rack. I have never had any issues with multiple multiple hour rides. My only complaint is that it is very heavy. It would be great for fat tire or mountain bikes, but if you have light road bikes like I do, this rack may be overkill. 671293

I will say this about the TRS though; the hook design is compatible with bikes that wider forks compared to the MonoRail. • Can the Hollywood Racks TRS Bike Rack be Used on a 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500
  • Since the Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000 is compatible with both 1-1/4" and 2" trailer hitch receivers it should work just fine with your 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500. The only thing you will want to check is the clearance from the center of your hitch pin hole to the rearmost edge of your bumper. When the bike rack is folded up it measures 6-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack. As long as you have at least this much clearance you will be able...

  • Does the Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000 Have a 2-Bike Add-on
  • The Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000 that you referenced does not have an extension for 2 bikes, but we do have some other options that you may be interested in. Among the options that we have I recommend going with the Swagman Semi 4.0 # S64698. It is compatible with 2 inch hitch receivers and can carry 2 bikes. If you would like to carry 4 bikes you can either purchase the add-on # S64699 separately or you could just go ahead and get the full 4-bike version # S64698-99. The Swagman...

  • Bike Rack for a Fat Bike that Weighs 50 Pounds
  • The single bike capacity of the Swagman XC # S64650 is still going to be 35 pounds but we have other racks with higher capacities for a single bike that could work for you. The RockyMounts MonoRail Solo 1 # RKY10007 can carry 1 bike up to 60 pounds with tires up to 5 inches wide. The similar Rola Convoy, # 59308 for 2 inch hitches or # 59307 for 1-1/4 inch hitches, has a capacity of 80 pounds and takes bikes with up to 5 inch wide tires. The Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000 holds 2 bikes...

  • Can I Transport Fat Bike on Thule Doubletrack and T2 Classic Platform Carriers
  • Thule's Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack # TH990XT includes wheel trays that can accept tire widths to 3-inches. The T2 Classic racks # TH9044 (for 2-inch hitches) and # TH9045 (for 1-1/4-inch hitches) both feature different wheel trays that accept tires as wide a 5-inches. For a lower-priced rack for fat bikes check out the Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000. This handles tires up to 4-1/2-inches wide and bikes up to 50-lbs each. These T2 wheel trays are not compatible with the...

  • Platform-Style Bike Rack Rated for Use Behind Towable Camper
  • I do have an option for you, however the Hollywood Racks TRS 2-Bike Platform Rack # HR3000 that you referenced is also not rated for use behind a towable camper. The added movement and bounce that a bike rack has to withstand when mounted behind a trailer (as opposed to a standard passenger vehicle) is enough so that only certain bike racks are tested and approved for this application. For a platform-style bike rack that is approved for use behind your camper, I recommend the Swagman...

  • Recommended Bike Rack To Clear the Rear Spare Tire on a 2012 Toyota RAV4
  • The best way to make sure you don't have any issues with the rear spare tire on your 2012 Toyota RAV4 would be to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of the spare tire. If this distance does not exceed 6-1/2" then I recommend the Hollywood Racks TRS 2-Bike Platform Rack part # HR3000 which is a wheel mount bike rack so your deep drop tubes won't be an issue at all. This platform style will also be a ton easier to load your bikes onto. The Hollywood Racks...

  • Can a Trunk Mount Bike Rack Carry an E-Bike on a 2012 Buick Regal
  • We do have a solution for you but unfortunately trunk mount bike racks, like the Express 2 # HRE2 that you referenced, only have a weight capacity of 35 lbs per bike. Any trunk mount bike rack that has a higher capacity will not be much higher than that. If you have an e-Bike then you really need to go with a hitch mount bike rack as your bike probably weighs closer to 50 lbs. For your 2012 Buick Regal I recommend installing the Draw-Tite # 36538 which is a Class II trailer hitch with...

  • Replacement for Thule DoubleTrack Bike Rack That Does Not Work For Fat Tire Bikes
  • The Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2-Bike Rack # TH990XT is a high-quality rack in a lot of ways, but a major drawback is that it does not offer the ability to hold bikes with fat tires, like you have had the bad luck to find out firsthand. There is also no kit that allows you to modify the rack to work with fat tires, and the reason why any type of modification will void the warranty is because if Thule or other rack manufacturers allowed any type of modifications and they didn't work,...

  • Recommended Bike Carrier Compatible with Two Firmstrong Cruiser Bikes
  • The Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack Platform Style for 1-1/4" and 2" Trailer Hitches # S64650 weakest link as you stated is the wheel hoops. They are not very durable even though they are tested and confirmed for certain weights for the manufacturer warranty specifications. The weight limit of 35 lbs per bike is very common for many racks like this one, but when racks are rated for higher weights they definitely raise those capacities as you definitely want a rack that can handle your bike weights...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for Fat Tire Bikes on 2014 Toyota Camry
  • The Thule Raceway PRO 2-Bike Platform Rack - Trunk Mount - Adjustable Arms # TH9003PRO is not compatible with your 4 inch wide fat tires. There is not currently an adapter to make it compatible. Because your Salsa Bucksaw full suspension bike has a carbon fiber frame, I recommend adding a trailer hitch receiver like # 36540 and then adding a platform bike rack that mounts to the wheels. I've attached a video of the installation of the Draw-Tite trailer hitch to assist. Then for...

  • Is Hollywood Racks TRS 2-Bike Platform Rack a Good Value and Hitch for 2014 Nissan Murano
  • Hollywood Racks bike racks have the market cornered when it comes to bike rack value. You get a very rock solid bike rack at a very great price. For anybody wanting to get a lot of bike rack quality and not break the bank the Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000 option is the way to go. The overall built quality and ease of use is top-notch and they are very solid and stable in the hitch they are installed in on the road. I attached a test course and review video for more info on that as well. The...

  • How to Use Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack on Jeep Wrangler With Large Spare Tire
  • There are great bike racks that will work for you, but since you mentioned the distance from the hitch to clear your spare tire is 17 inches you need to start with the 12" long MaxxTow Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches # MT70024. An extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch in half, though that won't be a problem because even if your hitch had a 350 lb tongue weight capacity that still leaves you with 175 lbs available for a bike rack and two bikes, which is more...
