Commuter 2 Hitch Bike Rack

The Commuter is the perfect option for bikers who want a functional, affordable rack that fits both 1-1/4 inch and 2-inch hitches, transports 1 or 2 bikes to the local park or trail, and easily stores in your trunk or garage between uses.

This lightweight rack weighs just 16 pounds and is simple to install. It slides into your vehicle's hitch receiver and secures with the included anti-rattle bolt, which prevents the rack from rattling around inside the receiver. Leave on the included adapter sleeve to fit the shank into your vehicle's 2-inch hitch receiver, or remove the sleeve to slide the shank into a 1-1/4 inch receiver.

Dual Arms with Cradles

Commuter Arms and Cradles

Dual arms support your bikes and better accommodate women's, children's and alternative frames. (An adapter bar [HRBA-PRO - sold separately] may still be required.) The arms easily fold down when the rack is not in use - just remove the tethered bail pin.

Soft rubber cradles with straps firmly grip your bike's frame. The cradles rotate and slide along the arms, so you can easily adjust them based on the type and number of bikes you're transporting. And you can use the integrated safety strap to help keep your bikes tied down.

Tilting Mast

Commuter Mast

The Commuter's upright mast tilts forward to allow access to your vehicle's cargo area. Once your bikes are unloaded, just remove the tethered bail pin from the base and tilt the rack away from the vehicle.

An anti-rattle hitch lock and cable lock set (HRLHPTC - sold separately) is recommended to deter theft of the rack and your bikes.

Video Transcript for Hollywood Racks Commuter 2 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be talking a look at the Hollywood Racks Commuter. This is a folding and tilting 2-bike rack. It's designed for use with an 1-1/4" or a 2" hitch. Its part number is HR2500. Now tilting the rack away from our vehicle, very easy to do. Just remove the bale pin located here at the base of the mast and allow it to tilt away.

As you can see, this gives us good access into our cargo area and it's going to work for most vehicles. We're now just going to stand that mast back into its upright position. Here at the top we've got another bale pin. Pulling that allows us to swing our dual cradle arms up into position. Each arm will have the nice red reflector here on the ends. Makes it visible in the evening, adds a little bit of safety to it for us.

We're going to have rubber-coated cradles. These are going to have the nice flexible soft rubber bands. That's going to prevent any frame wear or any kind of scuffs. These are going to rotate around the cradle arm. It's going to help us to get on a wide variety of frame styles. Now outside to outside here on the cradle arms it's 14" so getting narrower frame bikes, things such as that, on and off the rack shouldn't be an issue.

Now that we've gone over some of the key features of the rack, let's show you how to install it onto your vehicle. Converting the Commuter from an 1-1/4" as you see here over to a 2" is a very easy process. We'll grab our rack and our black adapter. We're going to place that right over the small threaded hole that's in the shank. Want to get our holes lined up there. We'll place our Allen bolt in and thread it on down.

Now you want to get this snug but there's no need to overtighten it or do anything to torque it down too much. We're going to put our bolt right in there and cinch this right up against this receiver tube of our hitch, which is going to give us a nice smooth, steady ride for our bikes. Once we have that in place we're just going to slide it right into the receiver tube. We need to line up the threaded hitch pin hole here with the hole that's in the receiver tube. We're going to place in our anti-rattle bolt and thread that in. We just want to take this down to hand tight for right now. Then we can finish it off with our wrench. Now again, as we tighten this bolt down the shank's being drawn over against the receiver tube. As you can see right now, we're pretty free to wiggle that around and move it, but as we get some torque applied to that bolt you see all that play is gone. We'll then used to supplied clip. We're going to slide it through the hole that's in the end of our bolt just to give us a little bit of extra protection there. With everything secured our shank we're going to load up a bike. Place our bike right up into our cradles and then we can secure it using our straps. Now the straps, we want to have them secure but we certainly don't need to overtighten them. Stretching them too far could cause excessive wear. There we go; we've got that bike loaded up. I'll go ahead and load up a second bike and let you see what it looks like at capacity. Now as you can see on this hybrid-style frame there's virtually no upper tube for us to connect our cradle arms to. What we've done, we've brought in the Hollywood Racks bike adapter bar. This can be used in a wide variety of applications for women's or kids' frame bikes as well. The part number on that is HRBA-PRO. Here in the rear we have a steel loop. Attached to that's our integrated safety strap. This is designed to snake right in through our bikes, like here we'll go through the frame, the tire, and then through the front wheel on our second bike. We'll bring this up, back around, then we're going to go through the rear wheel frame and front wheel on our bike. To secure this all we need to do is first run it through the closer section of the inside gap, then the outside. We're going to cinch this down. This is going to keep our bikes from moving around a lot, and it's also going to protect them in case any of our straps fail or something like that. To secure your bikes we do have a kit available. It's a locking hitch pin bolt, as well as a locking steel cable that's designed to go through both bikes and also through the steel loop located here in the rear. Its part number is HRLHPTC. You can check that out on our website. The rack offers a black rust-resistant powder coat finish. It's going to give us a strong and durable, long lasting look on the outside. It's also made well enough to offer a 75 pound weight capacity, so we can get up to 37-1/2 pounds per bike on it. Hollywood stands behind their products and offers a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we've got our rack all loaded up we're going to head out to the test course and let you see what it looks like in action. We'll start by going through our slalom course. This simulates changing lanes or maybe some evasive maneuvers. As we make our way around the counter to the alternating bumps this is going to apply some torque to the rack. This will be like hitting to pothole or curb that we didn't see. As we get into our salad speed bumps it's going to simulate the up and down movement. This is going to be just like going in and out of driveways or parking garages. That will complete today's look at the Hollywood Racks Commuter tilting 2-bike rack designed for use in 1-1/4" and 2" hitches, part number HR2500. .

The bike rack came 5 days after I ordered it. Real easy to assemble. Looks sturdy enough. Won't know till the weather warms up a bit. Dan, the service rep, was extremely helpful/knowledgeable about the product. I explained that it was for a 2018 Subaru Forester w/ a 1 1/4" hitch. Wanted something fairly sturdy/reliable without paying a small fortune. Was told etrailer.com got very good feedback on this product. 472431

Fantastic customer service: The consultants are professional at etrailer and the very best... Contacted etrailer researching a hitch bike rack for my 1 1/4 hitch and specifications about the width of cradle on bike rack. CS and Pat are very competent, these consultants took my calls and with great care discussed my concerns, and answered all questions so that l could make an informed decision. I purchase the HR2500 hitch bike rack. My products arrived 4 days earlier than anticipated without any damage, and items were exactly what l ordered. The products are everything l desired and very well constructed. I am satisfied and happy with my etrailer experiences and bike products. No longer will my bikes look disorganized, bike frames on an angle, when attached to my car. etrailer met my bike transport needs! 427526

Do you have a question about this Hitch Bike Rack?

  • Will Bike Tires Hit Ground When On Hitch Mounted Hanging Bike Rack Installed On 2009 Honda Fit
  • For the hitch-mounted bike racks we offer like the Rola TX-102 2-Bike Rack, part # 59400, the bike tires will be higher than the shank of the hitch they are mounted in. I have attached a photo of the 59400 on the back of a vehicle. As you can see in the photo, the bike is sitting higher than the trailer hitch shank and unless you were to drive over a very exaggerated hump, you would not risk having the tires of the bike hit the pavement. You can add a cable lock like part # CAB-10 for your bikes but not for the rack itself. This bike rack fits Class II 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitch receivers. To keep someone from overloading a Class I hitch, manufacturers place a stopper in the back of Class I hitch receivers so that drawbars and accessory shanks can only slide into the trailer hitch opening up to that point.
