Sport Rider 2 Hitch Bike Rack for Fat Bikes

The Sport Rider platform-style hitch bike rack makes it simple to carry 2 fat bikes on the rear of your vehicle. This versatile rack is easy to use, and it features locking frame hooks and wheel hoops specifically designed for fat tires, so you can quickly load and unload your bikes. The included adapter sleeve enables the rack to fit both 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers. An anti-rattle system tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the tube.

Locking, Ratcheting Hooks

hooks

The Sport Rider uses locking frame hooks to secure your bikes. These ratcheting, cushioned hooks easily adjust along the vertical mast and lock securely in place. The release buttons allow each hook to slide up the ratcheting arm for bike removal. The hooks function independently, which means you can position them to carry bikes of different heights.

Adjustable Wheel Hoops

Sport Rider 2 Fat Bike Wheel Holders

The wheel hoops are wider than standard cradles and will hold tires up to 5" wide. They accommodate bicycles with wheelbases up to 60" by sliding along the horizontal arms. They secure in place with easy-to-use hand knobs, and the Velcro-like hook-and-loop straps fasten the wheels to the hoops.

Sport Rider 2 Fat Bike Wheel Holders

The rack also comes with 2 sets of standard-size cradles, giving you the option of carrying 2 fat bikes, 2 standard bikes, or 1 of each.

Folding, Tilting Design

HR1000 Tilted

The rack tilts, with or without bikes loaded, for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Simply remove the pin from the base and tilt the platform down.

HR1000 Folded

The rack also folds up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. To raise the rack, just lower the mast flat against the tray and then lift the rack up toward the back of the vehicle.

Easy Installation with Locking Hitch Pin

The rack easily installs in the hitch with the locking hitch pin. Just slide the shank into your receiver, insert the hitch pin, and attach the lock pod. The locking pin works as an anti-wobble device to eliminate sway and rattle in the receiver.

hitch adapter

A removable adapter sleeve is included so the rack can be converted for use with 1-1/4" hitch receivers. The sleeve attaches to the shank with a single screw and can be installed or removed quickly.

Add-On Adapters

 Hollywood Racks Wheel Hoop Adapters

If you want to use the rack to transport a kid's bike with 16" or 18" wheels, wheel hoop adapters (sold separately) are available.

If you want to transport one recumbent delta trike or one recumbent tadpole-style trike with the Sport Rider, you can use the HRTRK-ADP adapter (sold separately).

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

Upon initial install everything looks great. Well built and fairly easy to assemble. There was some damage to the shipping box and one of the slides for the wheel bracket was cracked. I have purchased this rack for recumbent bikes. We own 2 bikes a long wheel base rans and a short wheel rans also. Once the initial setting of the wheel holders it should be easy for the future. The old rack I had purchased years back would not fit the long wheel base recumbent. This new rack will do the trick.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

I selected the HR1000Z-R based on this review: https://www.etrailer.com/question-432956.html and have used the rack for over a month on an '09 Jetta wagon. It's been a slight disapointment and an overall 'meh' purchase. Sort of a 'guess it does the job' thing. If there was partial stars I'd give it a 2-1/2. Assembly took about 30-45 minutes and the directions are fair but you may have to make a guess or two about some of the minor hardware. The hitch lock and the mast locks are keyed alike so you only need to keep track of one key. We use this rack for both standard diamond frame bikes and for transporting a fully rigged Surly Big Dummy. The latter bike was the primary bike we needed this wider hitch mount system rather than a more prevalent unit. The carrier scrapes when the car and carrier are loaded but that's more due to the Jetta's ride height and height of the receiver. The anti-rattle system is a threaded hitch pin that you run through your receiver then tighten down with a wrench. That keeps it from being a quick mount/dismount but doesn't take more than a few minutes. It comes with a lock for the hitch pin as well. The anti-rattle part keeps the hitch side from rattling, but there's still some lash at the upward bend where the main folding mechanism connects. With lighter bikes, it's not as noticeable but you definitely notice it with the cargo bike and another bike mounted. Both the main rail and mast use pins to secure the parts and allow for changing the form from 'folded away' to 'fully extended for use'. The main folding mechanism has a larger pin with a bale around it to keep it from dislodging during use. There's a smaller pin with a bale that can be removed to drop the assembly to allow access to the rear hatch. There is no assistance for the lift. The likelyhood of a person being able to lift the assembly and remove or add the necessary pin(s) with the rack loaded is pretty slim. Even more so if you have a cargo bike on there. This joint is also where the lash in the system comes from. There's enough room on the receiver side of the joint to allow it to fold easily, but there's not any sort of washer that takes out the slop. I'll probably have to look at a plastic washer or some sort of shim to take the wobble out. The crossbar has four loops to catch the wheels. The loops have velcro straps to secure the wheels to the hoops. The hoops' location is adjustable with a knob that tightens the mounting point on the crossbar. There's a plastic sleeve inside of the connecting piece to let it slide on the crossbar and keep the hoop assembly tight. The knob needs to be cranked down hard for the rear wheel of the Big Dummy. I can see some sag in the BD rear wheel hoop that I assume is from the weight + my failure to tighten it down far enough. Notice from the picture that the BD is biased far to the right. This is to get the top tube hook to land at the joint between the top tube and the seat tube. The mast has a keyed pin that lets you lay over the mast for folding the rack away. One side of the mast has teeth for the top tube clamps. The top tube clamps are open hooks with a foam padding. If your bike has exposed cables on the top tube, the rubbing will eat your paint alive. We got around that by using some pipe insulation to protect the top tube. You'll notice in the stock images the hooks rise to two different levels. One is substantially higher than the other. This means that two standard, regular height bikes won't fit the rack. The only reason this is sort of acceptable is that the BD has a sloping top tube. I reversed the mast from the original position so that the lower hook was on the outside of the rack to allow ease of mounting the BD. Otherwise I'd have to fight the cargo bike into the car side hoops and beat up both the car and the bike in the process. I will likely modify the low hook by drilling out the silver rivets, raising the hook and drilling to remount the hook high enough to get two standard flat top tube diamond frame bikes to mount. I shouldn't have to do that. There's already some light surface corrosion in places like the TT hook. Condensed version (TLDR): The rack can carry a Big Dummy, and it does that okay. The rack can't carry two adult sized standard bikes because one of the top tube hooks is too low to get the bike on. If you have bikes with sloping TTs, you may get lucky and be able to mount both bikes. There's some lash from the folding mechanism. Don't expect to actually get into the rear hatch with bikes mounted on the hitch, the securing mechanism is a purely mechanical joint that's fiddly to operate even with the hitch unloaded. If you have a BD on here, it's going to hang way out to one side if you drive a smallish car. Otherwise the carrier works as advertised. Overall, it's fine I guess. It'll have to be since this seems to be the only ready solution. I'll go through and make some mods to get it to do what it should out of the box. What can be done to fix the problems? Folding mechanism lash: Add plastic washers to still allow the mechanism to fold, but take out the lash. Raising and lowering the assembly while loaded: Add some sort of assistance (spring or gas shock) to raise and lower the assembly. Redesign the locking assembly from pins to an easier system. A friend has a Swagman (I think) carrier and it has a button on top that allows you to release the assembly, not pins that you have to fight to align while lifting up the assembly with the bikes loaded on it. Top tube hooks: increase the mast height to allow the hooks to raise high enough to pick up larger frames. Long winded, but hopefully this helps someone. -David

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

I would have given this bike rack a 5 star except for two issues. 1. the instructions to put it together are hard to understand but keep in mind I do not following them anyway but it was simple to put together 2. When it tips away from the vehicle with the bikes on the inside the pickup the end gate will hit the bike peddles, a fix for that is to extend the main tube from the receiver hitch accordingly. I did not try it on a SUV with the hatch. I think that would work fine. I also like the way it folds up when there is no bikes on it so it is out of the way (see picture) It is a well made bike rack and I would definitely recommend it

Great bike rack, easily assembled, fits our two bike perfectly. Sturdy, easy to load and unload bikes, love the tilt feature. Happy to be able to lock the bikes and the hitch lock. Haven’t used it on a drive yet but I’m sure we will be pleased!

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

The Hollywood HR1000R goes together easily and seems very sturdy. It is easily wide enough to hold two recumbent bikes with seats on and is long enough to accommodate two long wheelbase recumbents. The inside bike installs more easily with the vertical post folded, but once in place is held securely. The outer bicycle installs easily. It does project considerably from the rear of the vehicle and is certainly not light. Pictures show a Rans Stratus LE XL and a Rans V-Rex mounted. Etrailer delivered the order very promptly.

Comments
Works great. I only regret that I waited so long to replace a dangling bike carrier with the Hollywood HR1000R. It is much easier to load bikes on this rack and they are held more securely. Now that I have experienced the rack, I’d recommend it more strongly than I did at first.

Easy to put together. Easy to use. I would definitely recommend this rack to a friend. It perfectly fits both mine and my wife’s 29er full suspension mountain bikes. Stoked about this purchase. Solid rack!! Also, I can’t say enough about etrailer.com I called to get some info on another rack that they were out of and was recommended this one, that turns out was a better fit for my bikes than the one I was looking at. Also, I needed it to ship out quickly because I was going on vacation. They expedited the process and it shipped that day. Saved my vacation. I can’t say enough about the company or the rack. SOLID

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

My review is for the model that carries recumbent bikes. We love this model because it folds/tilts up close to the car when not in use. We spent a lot of time searching the Internet to find a relatively inexpensive model that had the tilt capability. If you couldn’t tilt it up, you wouldn’t be able to close the garage door or you would have to remove the carrier when not in use. When closed, the carrier does not interfere with the operation of the hatchback (on a Dodge Caliber). We use it to carry a Day 6 bike and a recumbent bike. The slots for the wheels are adjustable for the different lengths. It is absolutely perfect for our purpose and looks stylish on the back of the car. I will try to upload a few pictures (which were taken when I had two Day 6 bikes loaded on it). It was on back order at eTrailer, but we were happy to wait a few weeks for it. We were kept informed on the status of our order by regular e-mails. Once they received it in stock, the turnaround time to get it to us was very quick, only 2 or 3 days as I recall.

Installed the HR1000 and the Drawtite hitch. Was very easy. The photos and videos on etrailer website were great, being able to refer to them for any questions during the assembly. The rack works great and we are able to open the hatchback on the rear of the prius without even having to tilt the rack and bikes back. VERY pleased.

Assembly and attachment to my car was very straight forward and easy. It seems to be a sturdy unit. It’s s going to be nice to have a bike rack that is made to accommodate a recumbent. In the past have always made due with a more universal type racks which to be honest were a little sketchy? I am trying it out this weekend a 400 mile round trip should be a good test.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

This bike rack works fine. It solidly supports two bikes with no abrasions or other damage to the bikes. It is very stable on the back of the car and does not sway in corners or over bumbs in the road. It is relatively easy to mount on the car. Bikes go on easy although I do have to lift the forward bike fairly high to clear verticle bar. Occasionally I struggle a little bit releasing and sliding one of the lock downs that go over the frame of the bike. Overall, I have been very happy with it and it is a big improvement over my last bike rack where the bike frame was the only supported area.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

Pros: Great rack for our two bikes! Fits nicely into the class 1 trailer hitch on my wife's Nissan Altima. Easy to use and holds bikes securely even on highway and gravel country roads. Locking bike arms and locking hitch bolt are a nice feature to deter theft. Would buy again! Cons: Locking bike arms work well overall but require just the right touch to make them go up when you want to take your bike off. Hitch bolt is longer than it needs to be, but not too difficult to use.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

Good bicycle hitch. The only problem I had was with the arm that comes down on the bike. The padding is not that great so I would recommend adding extra padding or you may find the bike a bit scraped up. Also, I went with the smaller hitch so I could use this on my car and truck (with the adapter). I feel the smaller hitch is not that stable and should have gone with the 2" and only use on my truck. However I spoke to Hollywood Racks support and they provided me some good tips on strapping down the bike mount to minimize the wiggling. Overall, I like it and for my recumbents... it works good.

Comments
According to Hollywood Racks, the bike retaining hooks should only be pushed down until they stop. Its not necessary to push them down so far that the foam compresses.

Review from a similar Sport Rider in Hitch Bike Racks

My wife and I are in our 70's and we have e-bikes, so we need to be able to load them easily. This is the perfect solution for us. We don't have to lift the bikes very high, and the way they ride is perfect for preventing damage to the bikes. Kimberly at etrailer.com was very helpful and answered all of our questions. It was also delivered very quickly.

I purchased this hitch to carry my trike and it works great! I'm older and it's pretty easy to get my bike on it..just have to pick up the back end and walk it around and place on the tracks. With this though I am able to take my trike anywhere..great investment! I would definitely recommend this product.

The only problem I have with this trike rack is the mounting height. As I am elderly almost 81 , the height I have to lift the trike is problematic. I have talked to Hollywood and we are investigating making a mounting bar without the offset. This would lower the height to a more mangeable point and make it easer to load

Comments
Working out just fine. The straight bar lowers the rack to a more manageable height.

The product is very well designed. Quality seams to be of very good material and should give good service. I really like the ease of loading and unloading the bikes. The extra clamp hook that was supplied, was needed in my case. Folding the carrier back allows us to open our rear hatch on the car. This was just what I wanted for carrying my recumbent and wife's regular bikes.
