Video Transcript for Detail K2 4 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Detail K2 4-Bike Folding and Tilting Bike Rack. They've designed this for use with both the inch and a quarter and two-inch hitches. The part number is K2BCR490. The rack is made with sturdy steel construction offering a rest resistant black powder coat finish. It comes with a one-year limited warranty. Some of the nice features of the bike rack to start with are the cradles. They've got a lot of good features built in.

The first we'll look at are going to be the deep grooves that are cut into the bottom of the rubber pads. These are going to help to accommodate the brake lines or the brake cables as they run through the channel here, so you won't have any interference or any pinching. The straps have two layers of security on them to secure your bike into place. First is going to be the hook and loop. You'll bring that around and attach it in and then as a secondary measure you've got the bungee cord that'll wrap around. There's a nice button here on the top that you can connect that in and it has multiple connection points.

You've got one, two, three, four, five different connection points, so you can get it as tight as you're going to need it. The cradles themselves rotate either to the right, center or to the left, and reinsert the pin and clip. This is going to help to accommodate a wide variety of bike frames. Also helping with that is the single cradle arm design that comes out. The cradle arm itself is folding. We'll simply pull the pin and clip here, allow that to fold down, and reinsert the pin and clip in its new location.

You can see that takes a lot of length off the back which is going to give us some extra storage options. Maybe with the arms extended it won't go in the garage, but once we tuck them away we can back I right in. Another great feature is the fold away style mass. This is going to allow us to gain access into our rear cargo area on most applications. This is a big rear door on the suburban. It doesn't have any issues coming open, but as you can see that allows us to get into the cargo area, get any of the goodies we're going to need out of there. We'll stand it back into its upright position and of course we want to reinsert the pin to hold it in this place.

Now that we've gone over some of the key features of the rack, let me show you how to get it installed onto your vehicle. We're getting ready to install our K2 into the receiver tube of our hitch, but before we do I want to show you how easy it is to move over to an inch and a quarter style if you're using the class one or class two hitches. It comes with all the hardware we're going to need to make that happen. We're going to begin by taking the shank that comes in the box. As you can see it says, "insert bolt here." That arrow is also pointing the direction we want to slide it into the shank and as you can see here on the top it says, "this side up." We'll slide it in with that side up. We need to use our longer thicker bolt. This is the one that actually goes through the shank into the quarter hitches and is designed for use with that. We'll take the larger of our two bolts, we're going to thread that in. Once we have it hand tight we can use our wrench and as long as it's going the right way we'll tighten that down. As we tighten that down, it's going to take the play out of the connection between the inch and a quarter converter, and to the main shank of our rack. It's going to give us a good firm ride without getting any play out of this area. Once we have it slid it, we'll just thread in our bolt and secure it on the other side with our clip. Since we're going to be using a class three or a two-inch hitch, we're simply going to remove the inch and a quarter shank, place it aside for now. We'll then just slide the shank of the rack right into the receiver tube of our hitch. We slide it in far enough so that our hitch pin hole lines up with the threaded hole in our rack. We'll then thread in our anti-rattle bolt, run that in hand tight and then tighten it down with our wrench. Just like with putting the inch and a quarter shank in as we tighten this bolt down, this is going to take the play out of the connection point of our rack. As you can see it's a real firm fit. We'll then secure it here on the other side using our clip. We'll now extend out our cradle arm and undo our cradle straps on the cradle. We're planning on loading this to capacity for you, so you can see what it looks like when we've got four bikes loaded. We do different styles of bikes, so it'll give you a pretty good indication of how it'll be able to be used. With our fourth bike in position we're going to secure it with the final strap here and we're going to go out onto our test course to really let you see what this bike rack looks like in action. As we get out there we're going to start on the inaudible 00:05:22. That's going to give us this side to side movement as if we we're turning corners or maybe doing some evasive maneuvers. As we get around that corner we'll go into the alternating bumps. That's going to show you the twisting of the rack by hitting the curve, hitting a pothole. Then we'll go into the solid bumps which is going to show us the up and down like if we we're hitting some uneven road surfaces, so we can see how that rack is going to move. That's going to complete today's look at the Detail K2 Tilting and Folding 4-Bike Rack for inch and a quarter and two-inch hitches, part number K2BCR490. .

Great product. Exceeded my expectation s. 557327

Great product! Only complaint I have is using the smaller hitch, the entire rack is a loose fit so it rocks back and forth. This can be fixed by using bungee cords. Other problem is really just a note to bike rack owners when bikes aren't on the rack, take the clamp assembly off and store in your trunk where it can't be stolen. 635082

I like it it came out of the box and i only had to install one bolt to get it on the car and working! Simple! The only thing was one of the bolts u have to remove to swing up the arm up and down that hold the bikes was hard to put in and out so i had to drill the hole a little bit bigger to make it easier fir my wife. Other then that it seems great 252245

This rack is very heavy duty. Haven't had a single negative issue. Locks firmly and the parts move smoothly. It is a little bit heavy to put on and take off the car, but a very small price to pay for a rugged unit. Much better quality than I expected for the price. 386684

I purchased the hitch specifically so I could put a bike rack on without strapping anything to tailgate of wagon. Hitch fit perfectly, looks great, nice snug fit. Watching the how to install video made it a snap. The special wire tool included for fishing the bolts into place was awesome (watch the video). Without that tool I don't see how you would do this at all. I had it installed in 1/2 hour. I did find that I did not need to cut the plastic pan as much as the video showed so I would trim yours as you see fit rather than trying to match what was shown in video. By trimming it a little at a time, I did not have to eliminate one mounting screw as was shown in the video. Great web site guys thanks. I have not tried my bike rack yet so I'll review later. 229461

Well the hitch is great as expected but I am disappointed with the actual bike rack I choose. The quality is ok, I broke one elastic strap already. But the biggest problem is that only one of the six bikes we own will fit this type of mount. Many modern bicycles no longer use the traditional straight top tube on the frame so they are difficult if not impossible to mount to this rack. The other problem I found was that unless the tube you are attaching it to is of standard diameter and round, the nylon straps are just not long enough to go all the way around and allow the Velcro to grip itself. so you end up hoping the elastic can carry the load. It cant. While the ability to rotate each bike clamp seems to offer many configurations, none of them solve the problems I am experiencing. My disappointment with this rack is my own fault for not considering the types of bicycles I needed to mount before buying it, the quality is good its just not as versatile as I thought it would be. I have tried to remedy this in many ways but it looks like Ill have to choose another style rack.

Product shipped quickly. The box was messed up, but the rack was not damaged. Required some assembly, but nothing too difficult. Instructions were marginally helpful. (I recommend, once you mount the rack to the hitch, you go around and re-tighten the bolts... and do it again after you carry bikes once or twice...) I use it on a Hidden Hitch Class III Hitch on my 2015 Subaru Forester and it fits well and provides good clearance from the bumper. I think this rack has a lot of value. It is well made and is sturdy. I've used it three times so far and I'm pleased. Bike fitment is tighter than I expected for this design. My daughter's 24" bike fits easier than my wife's Gary Fisher due the opening in the frame... A cross bar would fix that… My 29er has no problems. The saddles came mounted backwards from the way the video shows. It made attaching the straps more difficult. (The buckle part was on the front side of the car instead of the rear...) I had to remove the screws and turn them 180 degrees and reattached. Now it is easier to strap down. I installed a short section of pipe insulation on the vertical member to protect in case the auto liftgate was triggered. Overall I'm pleased for the money. I would like to add a security anti-rattle pin, but haven't found the right size yet. I aksed the question and hope it gets answered soon... 201989

Its been a year and still using it regularly. Used it yesterday in fact. Its holding up well.

Overall I'm satisfied with the product. Well built and sturdy, assembly was quick and easy. Only issue I really have is that the pins holding the arms are just a little to small and I feel like it gives way for a lot play allowing the bikes to wiggle around while sitting on the frame secured by the straps. Speaking of the straps, I do like how they are not only Velcro, but they also have a bungee cord with different length sections to wrap around a button for additional security holding the strap in place. Another thing that is nice is that each arm has additional holes which allows you to tilt the arms if needed to offset the bikes so they aren't hitting each other, or for better placement. 554311

- K2BCR490

This is a very sturdy bike rack and it comes almost completely assembled, which is nice. You will need bike adapter bars, despite what the video says, if you have children's bikes. A girls' bike simply will not fit and my son's bike is a 24" and barely fit, but the finish scratched because it was so close. My bike (adult women's 27") fits only with the water cage mounted to the back bar (not the usual, handier location). You will also want to buy a 15/16" ratchet wrench to tighten and release from the hitch. These are not easy to come by, I had to buy it in a set at Lowe's. I am just getting started with this rack, so I will post an update when I've put some miles on it. 194400

It's been about a year (April 2016) that we got the Detail K2 bike rack. We've used it to transport 4 bikes to and from Acadia National Park. The bike rack held up well and the bikes were secured to the rack quite well. The rack hardly shook in our trip and the bike or rack hardly made any noise, even on rough road surfaces. One thing that may not work for this bike rack are bikes that are small or bikes that have a sloping top tube. Since the rack has a single arm, the part holding the bike might be too wide to fit a small bike. I've included a picture of this with my son's 20 inch bike. Also, one of the O-rings that attaches to the end of the straps came off - no big deal, just had to put it back in. But other than those 2 minor concerns, the bike rack should hold up for years to come. 364184

Our bike rack is doing well. It about 2 years old now and my family and I are getting ready start riding our bikes again now that winter seems to be over knock on wood here in NJ. My son has graduated from his 20 inch BMX bike to a 24 inch mountain bike, so hooking it up is not a problem anymore. Straps are doing OK and Ive gotten a lock cable for our bikes just to secure it if we have to leave it, i.e., eating in a restaurant or something similar. But very happy with the bike rack and look forward to many more years with it.

I purchased this bike rack for my husband for Christmas last year. I wish I could give 10 stars! I am a procrastinator and I ordered last minute and it was shipped and delivered the NEXT day!! We have a suburban and while on vacation it is so convenient to leave the back rack on and have the option to lower the arm to still access our back hatch fully! We have bragged so much that we bought one for my father in law this year! Easy to put together and take off! Etrailer is a wonderful company and truly best price and BEST quality! 733079

I really like this rack. This rack has worked well with my road, tri and mountain bikes. It reclines well and allows access into my Ford Escape and my wife's Honda Odyssey.. best to recline it without bikes on it. I managed it with four bikes but I needed my wife's help and it was hard to say the least. I bought this rack because of the good price, it fit a 2' trailer hitch, and seemed secure. My friend almost lost his $3k mountain bike when his bike came off his tray style rack. His bike seemed secure when he left, but I recovered it in the middle of the highway before another car could crush it. I was nervous with my daughters trek mountain bikes hanging from a cross tube but they faired very well. One daughter had chaffing on her down tube from another bike, but I'm sure that'll happen on any hanging style rack especially when you cluster 4 bikes so close to each other. I should have chafe wrapped it when I noticed chaffing. On that note it does rock a little but I'm sure no rack is going to stop that small amount of rocking. I lost the threaded pin after a few months and ended up buying a 4" course 3/4" bolt and nut for about $3 at Home Depot. Yes, taking it on and off is more of a naissance but it works perfectly well and I'm sure most thieves aren't walking around with a 1-1/4" wrench nor willing to work that hard to steal the rack. lol. Overall I really like this rack. I've used it all this time in New Mexico with all that heat and long driving. Heck, I even used it as a repair station at a century event. I like how sturdy it is, the bikes can be easily secured on it, it folds up well, reclines nicely to allow access to the trunk and is very durable, at least it has been for me. 643290

Having never owned a bike rack before, the search for one online became very difficult. This is one of those things that the more you read, the less you seem to know what your looking for. This rack seems pretty decent. Very sturdy and easy to set up. I have 3 bikes to carry, a large men's, large woman's and a child's. My men's bike goes right on no problem. The woman's and girls bike is very difficult. The bike cradles are too large to fit between the upper and lower frame pieces in the woman's bikes very easily. I did get it to work though by removing the cradle assemblies, strapping them into the bike frame as the bike is sitting in the ground, they barely fit and then lifting the bike up and sliding the whole assembly onto the post that supports the bikes. The shopping experience with etrailer was top notch and they provided an excellent value. I will definitely purchase from here again. 413756

- K2BCR490

Everything as described and then some!! Installed both tow hitch and bike rack in 35 mins.. Really pleased with both. Only issue was one bolt was a tight spot due to the muffler, but nothing serious.. 267319

- K2BCR490

The item was delivered within 3-5 days of the order and the processing was fast as advertised and good tracking. The bike rack box contains several pieces: 4 bike holders, the arm/vertical piece, and the 2" adapter piece which had already in it the 1/4" adapter for the hitch receiver. No instructions, but easy to picture. There are some labels on the 2" adapter that say "this side up". Upon attempting to connect the 2" piece to the arm/vertical piece with the provided 2 screws, these did not go through (the holes were a tiny misaligned and I did not want to force them since this will strip the screws), so I rotated the adapter (ie "up" label now on the bottom) and then the holes aligned perfectly, not a problem. One detailed I missed from the video: the pin used on the receiver is a screw type which goes into the 2" adapter to make the assembly more stable. Since the adapter piece has a welded nut inside, I wanted to use a std 5/8" lock type receiver pin to prevent the rack from being stolen but unable as it will not go through. 173123

The Detail K2 4-Bike Rack # K2BCR490 has a weight capacity of 100 lbs which means per bike it has a capacity of 25 lbs. • Bike Rack Recommendations for Use Behind an RV
The ride quality at the rear of an RV is much rougher than that of a passenger vehicle. This is largely due to the longer distance between the rear of the vehicle and rear axle. Due to the additional bounce and movement back there not all bike rack manufacturers are willing to approve their bike racks for use on RV's. We have several racks that are approved though.
