Video Transcript for Tow Ready Hitch Ball 63845 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a 2 inch hitch ball from Draw-Tite. Now a hitch ball installs onto a ball mount and provides a connection point for your trailer's coupler. This ball is made from a durable steel construction with corrosion resistant chrome finishing. It does come with your lock washer and the nut, so those are included. Also, you'll notice on the sides here it has wrench flats, which allows for an easier installation. You can use a 1 7/8 inch wrench here at the flats to get it installed and tightened down correctly. Now the ball diameter is a 2 inch ball.

It has the weight capacity engraved right there on it. That's 7,500 pounds. When it comes to the dimensions of the shank, starting with the diameter that measures 1 inch in diameter. The overall shank length is 2 1/8 inch long. This is designed to fit a draw thickness of 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick.

The nut size is 1 1/2 inch. The torque rating on the nut is 250 foot pounds. You can find that printed on the materials that comes with the unit. Again, weight capacity 7,500 pounds. Ball diameter 2 inch.

And it's covered with a lifetime warranty. So when you install this onto your draw bar, you place it through the hole in the ball mount. On the underside of the draw bar, you place on the lock washer followed by the nut. Then you start getting everything tight and secure. And then finish your install by achieving the proper torque rating specified in the instructions. That's going to do it for today's look at the 2 inch hitch ball from Draw-Tite..

I installed the Curt trailer hitch on my 2013 Acura RDX. Installation was simple. After sliding the hitch into position, I set a bucket under the center of the hitch and that held it up while installing the bolts. Since my car is not new, I cleaned the threads with a nylon brush and penetrating oil. After inserting the bolts and nuts, I torqued each type to the specified ft-lbs with my torque wrench. No problems; the installation was done in less than an hour. I also installed the Curt wiring harness. The connector is on the left side of my 2013 RDX under the removable panel and forward of it. I did not take out any additional panels but fed the wiring under the panel and along into the spare tire compartment. To protect that wiring from chafe, I put in in a plastic wiring split tube purchased elsewhere. I disconnected that battery as suggested which meant that I had to restart my navigation system when the job was done (easy to do); this did not lose any of the items in memory. There was no fuse in the slot for the trailer in the fuse box under the hood so I used a spare 20A in that slot. Total time less than an hour. 423682

Purchased a can of BP Blaster penetrating spray the day after I ordered the parts. I sprayed the weld nuts several times while waiting for the parts to arrive and it seemed to help loosen them up. My order arrived on time and I installed the hitch the next morning. I installed the hitch by myself ( I'm 67 years old), and while I admit that an extra set of hands would have been very helpful, the install was easier than I anticipated. I had all the parts I needed, the instructions were easy to follow and the online video was very helpful. I purchased the hitch in order to tow a trailer with a ton of wood pellets, instead of getting 1/2 a ton at a time (the capacity of my truck). Hopefully these products will solve my problem, only time will tell. 392665

Thank you for such prompt service. I put this on my Polaris 570 mid size Ranger. The problem was a normal hitch was under the bed and a 2 inch rise was a bit too low for a level trailer. This fixed the problem moving the ball out further and higher. Much easier to hook up. I would recommend your company to others. 483723

Everything was as described. The videos were very helpful. The only point where I needed help (other than a second person helping during the install) was tightening the nut on the ball where it mounts to the tongue. This requires a LARGE wrench. A local muffler/radiator shop was glad to do it and didn't even charge me. I have used the hitch several times now and on one occasion pulled a U-Haul trailer full of furniture from south Florida to north Texas. On another occasion I pulled a trailer that was VERY heavily loaded with flooring about 50 miles over some very uneven roads. The hitch has always performed perfectly. Could not be happier with the product or the company. 326871

To Whom it May Concern: I highly recommend etrailer.com com. I ordered a trailer hitch and bike rack by phone. The sales agent was professional, competent, helpful and friendly. The prices of the products are fair and the delivery was timely and arrived in good condition. It is rare to have a purchase experience of the level of high quality that I experienced with etrailer.com. I am highly recommending this company to others, based on my first experience with them, and I would not hesitate to purchase from them again. 4 stars out of 4. Thank you. I run a small camper dealership, Road Trip Camping, that specializes in small, compact, and lightweight little campers that can be towed by one's existing vehicle. I have been using etrailer.com for over a year now and am very happy with their service. Not only do they typically have anything I ever need, but they are very informed about their products and how to install them. Just a quick call to them, and I get all the answers I need. They are extremely good about product knowledge and customer service. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for trailer products and accessories. 290250

Great products and service. I was able to order everything I needed to add a tow hitch and ball to my 2006 Jeep liberty. Very fast shipping. They even called me to verify orders and availability. Clear and easy to follow installation instructions. I hauled an U-Haul trailer from Texas to Ohio without any issues. Even bought a trailer and use it frequently for hardware stoe runs. 347101

Ordered online a fixed ball mount Kit that includes the mount, ball, pin. The next day Tamara called me to inform that the kit is on back-order and may take a few weeks to arrive. She asked me if I don't mind waiting and I told her I needed the mount for this weekend. She sprung into action and put together the individual components separately. Wound up costing about $4 more than the kit. I was very okay with that. Three days later everything arrived. Turns out that Tamara UPGRADED my order from ground to 3-Day UPS. I love E-Trailer! Way to go Tamara! 157935

E-trailer is very easy to work with. The website is user friendly and very easy to navigate. I easily found the products I wanted and placed my order. My order arrived in 4 days and consisted of the Draw-rite max-frame class lll trailer hitch receiver custom fit for my 2015 Subaru Outback All items were in good condition upon arrival. I followed the installation instructions as written and had the hitch completed in 1 hr and another 20 minutes for the wiring harness. I would recommend E-trailer and their products to any diy. Excellent experience. Thanks 545052

I hate the computer (but they do have a super-easy website; I just ran out of time). So I used my preferred method: I called, and was helped quickly, without waiting....by someone who was pleasant and knowledgeable!.....thank you, ROSE, for handling my order. I've never done any towing before- and I expected a complicated hassle, but I was 100% wrong---and I would 100% do business again with etrailer. The moral of the story: I was smart enough to ask my mechanic- who told me about etrailer 381461

I took it to my mechanic to install on my 2015 Toyota Rav4, although I believe I could have done it myself with the enclosed instructions. Much easier to do with 2 people and a lift. Wired it up without a problem. Very nice, solid product, fit is excellent. Does not protrude past the bumper and doesn't seem to reduce ground clearance. Would recommend this hitch to anyone. I use it to pull a light utility trailer to haul my mower, ATV, etc. 367549

Comments

I am totally satisfied with the hitch, ball, pins and clips, as well as the wiring harness. I had my mechanic do the install and it went very smooth and performs perfectly. Great products an I would recommend them to anyone.

I paired this with the 8-3/4" Rise Cushioned Ball Mount to allow a 2004 Ford Van to tow my offroad capable Chalet Camp trailer. The Trailer sits level with the ball at ~20" off the road while this van's receiver sits at just over 11". The weight rating on this ball is overkill for this 1500lb trailer, but means I can tow something else if needed. Thanks to Patrick and the Crew at etrailer for their help with this selection. 269507

I chose the Draw tight Max Frame Trailer Hitch for its known quality, i like it comes powder coated to reduce unsightly rust and to keep that fresh look. I chose the this hitch for my all around light and heavy duty needs. The Draw Tight Ball Mount is a quality enhancement to this hitch. I chose the 2" chrome ball for its quality and appearance. The Curt C55515 wire connector was the best choice for my lighting needs. 506285

Arrived right on time in excellent condition. All instructions were straight fwd. Could not have been any more detailed. Excellent product and outstanding service, my compliments. Fit our 2017 vehicle without a "hitch"! Ordered hitch and ball with this, but was not aware that the pin for the hitch was not included, my fault for not checking. Thanks for the excellent product and service. Jack R. 294439

Solid construction, relatively easy assembly. I didn't have the right size socket to torque the nut to specifications. It's huge. So I just dropped the ball in a vise (it has flat sides at the base), and cranked on it with a pipe wrench as hard as I could. Even if I had the right socket, I think it called for something like 250 foot pounds of torque. My torque wrench doesn't go quite that high. 417983

Comments

Thanks for the review, typically trailer ball installations do call for a high torque spec, and you may be able to borrow/rent a high capacity torque wrench from your local hardware stores.

Note of Thanks and Appreciation The items I purchased will all be used on a towed vehicle i.e. a "dingy" behind a motorhome. All items arrived in perfect condition and on the timeline exactly as predicted. As always it is a pleasure doing business with you. Your web page describing all the items you carry is outstanding. I always find little things that I did not think of. Thanks, Hans Hansen 5640

etrailer's website has a wealth of information and product offerings. I called to get information on hitch configurations matching my particular motorhome year and model. eTrailer's Rep, Sal got the information quickly, so I ordered the items over the phone and the items arrive to my residence in very short order. I highly recommend eTrailer for your hitch and towing solutions. Stan H. 367551

I ordered the first time on the website, and after I didn't receive it for some time, I called and was told it is on back order. Had I known that 2 weeks earlier, would have helped. So reordered on the phone, and received it when promised. Unfortunately the shipper packed a steel ball in the same box with an aluminum hitch, and no padding around the ball. The hitch got pretty well beat up. 407542

This is the third time I have ordered from etrailer.com and each time has been an excellent experience. It's a towing ball. Not a lot to it. I will say it was a pain to find tools large enough to tighten it down properly. Ended up going to Sears and got the tools. You could probably go to your nearest U-Haul and ask them to tighten it for you. I was lazy so I went to three stores searching for tools large enough instead... 47223

- 63845

by:

Works well as designed. I would have liked to have had the option during checkout to request the ball to be pre-mounted and torqued to the hitch I was buying, That would have saved me a trip to a local garage since I didn't have a large enough socket, and the hitch design would not allow a wrench to be used. 228132

The products arrived quickly and I was communicate with the entire time. Once I received the items, I installed them in no time just the like I was explained on the website before I ordered them. Overall I am very happy with the whole process, probably one of the best companies I have shopped with online. 43977

Good quality product. Easy to install. Recommend that you follow the suggestion in one of the videos to finger tighten to hitch, then rotate the hitch 90 degrees, using the receiver to hold the hitch and ball when you tighten. Also, found that many hardware stores have the wrenches for about $10. 275530

One really solid hitch ball!! Threading and fitment was spot-on. After receiving can say it was worth the extra couple of dollars or so for the Chrome Finish alone over the other finishes. Product installed fairly easily. I used it to pull a [rental trailer] full of equipment back from college for the summer. Was a little harder to install that I thought but I got the job done. Ball works great. Haven't busted it and towed a trailer across the country TWICE! I did have to put some all purpose grease on it as it sounded like the trailer receiver and ball were binding up slightly and making all kinds of racket. After applying the grease it was smooth and silent. 349312

Ask the Experts about this Tow Ready Hitch Ball
Do you have a question about this Hitch Ball?

  • Is a 2 inch or 2-5/16 inch Ball a Standard Size for a Hitch Ball
  • 2 inch or 2-5/16 inch diameter balls are pretty standard sized balls, it is not surprising that the coupler on the 1997 Coleman camper accepts either one of those sizes. For a 2 inch ball I would recommend a Hitch Ball with 2 inch Diameter and Medium Shank, part # 19247. If you need a ball mount as well I would recommend a Ball Mount 2-3/4 inch Rise or 4 inch Drop, part # 2753.

  • Does a Trailer have to be towed Level or Can it be Off Up or Down
  • If the trailer is less than 1 inch off of being perfectly level either up or down then it will be perfectly fine. Having it slightly higher would be better because presumably the tongue weight of the trailer will pull it down a little. You could also look into different ball mounts with different rise or drop specs. I have included a link to our ball mount main page for you. Tongue weight on a trailer is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. But it can be less on a boat...

  • What Does GTW and TW Mean and What is Weight Distribution, 2008 BMW X5
  • I can certainly help you out. The TW is the tongue weight. This is the weight of the trailer at the coupler that attaches to the ball mount on the trailer hitch. It should be 10 to 15 percent of the GTW or gross trailer weight. The gross trailer weight is the total weight of the trailer. Weight distribution is a system that installs on the trailer frame and the trailer couples to a special shank on the trailer hitch. The spring bars that come with a weight distribution system take some...

  • Should Hitch Ball Angle Be Adjusted Up and Down or Angled to the Rear Using Weight Distribution
  • The hitch ball angle adjustment on weight distribution systems is designed to provide more or less distribution of the tongue weight on your trailer hitch to the trailer and vehicle axles. If you adjust the ball angle farther away from the towing vehicle, you will angle the weight distribution spring bars down toward the ground and that will distribute more weight. Angling the ball forward towards the towing vehicle puts less angle on the spring bars and therefore less weight is distributed. We...

  • How to Increase Height of Trailer Hitch Ball to Allow Boat Trailer to be Towed Level
  • Ideally a hitched trailer will be level to the ground. We often recommend starting off with the hitch ball being a bit higher - an inch or so - than the top of the coupler on the level trailer since once hitched there will be a degree of squat in the rear of the tow vehicle from the trailer tongue weight. This is perfectly acceptable. You can select a different ball mount for your hitch that gives you additional height (rise) by using the link provided at right. For example, if you want...

Next, there is a formula you can use to determine the best place for your axles. I have linked an installation video showing your same model year RAV4, the written instructions and two helpful articles on hitch installation. Towing...

  • Does a 2007 Toyota RAV4 Towing a 2000 lb Boat Need a Transmission Cooler
  • The Curt Class III receiver, part # 13509 is highly rated and would be a great choice for your Rav4. According to my research, the 2007 V6 is rated for 3500 lbs of towing when properly equipped. I would recommend checking your owners manual to confirm your towing capacity. To complete your towing system, you might need the following: Trailer wiring harness with 4-pole trailer connector # 118412 Ball mount, # 2923 2 inch trailer ball, # 19247 1-7/8 trailer ball, # 19260 A...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2016 Honda Pilot
  • I've attached an image of what a 7-way would look like for you to check your vehicle. Typically the parts to tow a trailer would be a hitch, a trailer wiring harness, a ballmount and a ball. If you have a heavy trailer with breaks you may need a brake controller and weight distribution. First lets start with what you will need for both applications. A hitch is what you need to use to tow anything of weight with your 2016 Honda Pilot. I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75225 because...

  • Recommended Trailer For 2013 Ford Edge To Carry 3 Kayaks
  • In my research I found that the load-carrying capacity of the roof on your 2013 Edge is 100 lbs. A roof rack that clips to the door frame would have a limited weight capacity and would not clear the side rails on your Edge. I am afraid 3 kayaks would weigh much more than the roof weight capacity of your roof but I do have a recommendation. You may be able to use the SportRack Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs, part # SR5531. This carrier would sit directly on the roof and you would secure...

  • Which Trailer Ball Size for Small Motorcycle Trailer
  • The ball size you need will be dictated by the coupler on the trailer. Take a good look at the top of the coupler. The necessary ball size should be stamped on the coupler itself. The smallest ball size we offer is 1-7/8 inch, which is most likely what you need. The 1-7/8 inch balls come with various shank diameters with 1 inch like part # 19260 or 3/4 inch like part # 19256 being the most popular. You will want to choose a trailer ball whose shank diameter matches the diameter of the...

  • Differences Between Available Class III Hitches for 2011 Toyota Sienna
  • The Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite model hitches you referenced would be identical, since Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite are sister companies. Both hitches are identical in looks, share the same capacity and would install in the same manner. The Curt # C13105 has a straight cross tube that bends slightly at each end, while the Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite Hitches have a cross tube that angles rearward from the receiver opening, with no bend. I have provided side by side photos showing the # 87698...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Toyota Sienna Limited AWD
  • Your 2014 Toyota Sienna can be fitted with either of two sizes/classes of trailer hitch, either a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class II type or a 2-inch Class III type that offers higher capacity. Since the costs between the two types are so close, and since a 2-inch hitch offers better flexibility with accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers, I suggest the Curt # C13105. This hitch's installation is shown in the linked video, and the written instructions as well as two helpful installation...

  • Best Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Subaru Forester
  • The best hitch for your 2016 Forester will depend on what you're planning on using the hitch for. If you're only needing the hitch to serve as an attachment point for the Yakima # Y02457 Ridgeback bike rack, a Class II hitch like the Draw-Tite # 36523 would be an excellent choice. However, if you might also use the hitch as an attachment point for other accessories like a large cargo carrier such as the Curt # C18153 or if you might do some light duty towing, a Class III hitch like the...

  • Recommended Hitch Trailer Wiring and Brake Controller to Tow Pop-Up Camper with a 2012 Jeep Compass
  • You son's Compass can be equipped to tow that pop-up camper, as long as its fully loaded and ready to tow weight does not exceed the towing capacity of the Compass, which is 2,000 lbs according to my research. For a hitch, I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 75712. You would also need a ball mount, part # 2753 and the appropriately-sized trailer ball, # 19261 for a 1-7/8 inch ball or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball. The coupler on the pop-up should say which size is needed. For...

  • What Trailer Hitch Will Fit On A 2007 Grand Caravan With Stow-N-GO Seating

It is a Class III hitch and has a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. with a tongue weight of 350 lbs. On the 2007 Dodge Caravan with Stow-N-GO seating the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 75119, that you have referenced will not work. Also needed is a Draw-Tite Ball Mount, # 2923, a Pin and Clip, # PC3, and a hitch ball. The hitch ball you need will depends on the size...

  • Equipment Needed to Tow 3000 lb Travel Trailer With 2011 Honda Pilot
  • To the best of my knowledge, the 2011 Honda Pilot came from the factory with a Class III receiver. 4WD vehicles have a 4500 lb towing capacity but from what I understand, the towing capacity of the vehicle decreases as the number of passengers in the vehicle increases. Honda also expressly mentions that weight distribution systems should not be used with their vehicles. You will want to confirm this by reading your owners manual or consulting Honda. Be sure that the fully loaded and ready...

  • What You Need To Tow A Trailer With A 2017 Toyota Rav4
  • In order to tow a trailer with your 2017 Toyota Rav4, you will need a trailer hitch receiver, wiring harness, and ball mount with hitch ball. For this, I recommend using the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75235 as this hitch receiver has the highest rated weight capacity for all our RAV4 hitches. For a ball mount, I recommend using the Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop part # 2923 with our 2" Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter part # 63845. You will also need a wiring harness...

  • Recommended Tightening Torque for Hitch Mounting Bolts
  • The Tow Ready 2 Inch Hitch Ball, part # 63845, you have referenced needs to be torqued to 250 foot pounds. It is recommended to frequently check that the ball is tightened to these specifications. If you are meaning the mounting bolts that are used to attach a hitch to a vehicle, it would depend on the hitch part number and the year make and model of vehicle the hitch is going on. If you can give me that information I can help you determine the torque specifications for your specific...

  • What Is The Puropse of Tow/Haul Button on a 2014 Ford Explorer
  • According to the owner's manual, when activated by pressing the button, the Tow/Haul feature improves transmission operation by changing the shift points so that upshifts are delayed to keep the engine operating higher in its power band when the transmission shifts. When the transmission is on OD (overdrive) having the Tow/Haul mode 'on' will provide engine braking in all gears, which is useful for when you're descending hills. I've driven vehicles previously that have had this feature,...

  • What is the Purpose of a Trailer Hitch Ball, Trailer Hitch Pin, and a Clip and are All Necessary
  • A hitch ball and a hitch pin and clip each serve a different purpose. A hitch ball, like # 19247, attaches to the ball mount, like # 2923, using a large nut that threads on from the bottom, kind of like a nut and bolt. This ball is what the trailer coupler attaches to. The hitch pin goes through the ball mount and the trailer hitch and the clip keeps it from coming out while traveling. There are also locking hitch pins that use a lock and not a clip like # 7683. Basically, you will...

  • Trailer Towing Capacity of 2005 Chrysler Town & Country Touring Edition
  • I have done some research, and have found that the tow capacity of your 2005 Chrysler Town & Country is 3700 lbs. You will want to check in your owners manual to confirm the towing capacity. Also, it is important to remember that your towing capacity is limited by the lowest rated component in the towing system, including: vehicle, hitch, ball mount, hitch ball or the capacity of your trailer. For a hitch (if you don't already have one), I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class III trailer...
