Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40008 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part #C40008. This is the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball from Curt. It's going to feature fine threads that are going to provide exceptionally tight and strong grip. This is made from a steel construction with a nice chrome finish so it's going to stand up really well against rust and corrosion. You're going to get the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball as well as the lock washer and the nut so everything that you see here is included. This unit, once installed, needs to be completely tightened down to 450 lbs. of torque. A few measurements to go over with you real quick.

The ball diameter again is going to be 2-5/16 of an inch. If we take a measurement of the shank, which is this portion right here, that's going to give us a length of 2-3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the ball platform to the very end of the shank. Now just the threaded portion looks like it's going to measure about 2-1/4 of an inch. The shank diameter is going to give us a measurement of 1-1/4 inches. Now in choosing the hitch ball, the ball shank diameter should be within 1/16 of an inch of the hitch ball hole diameter on your mount. Again, this is going to offer a hitch ball size of 2-5/16 of an inch and it's going to have the capacity of 20,000 lbs.

All that information is labeled right here on top of the hitch ball. Once you have this through the mount, the lock washer goes on the underside followed by the nut. You can go ahead and get it hand tied or you can tighten it with a wrench but you will need a torque wrench to get it to that 450 lbs. of torque that is required from the manufacturer. That's going to do it for our review of part #C40008. This is the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball from Curt. .

I received everything that I requested in a short time even with the free shipping. The ball mount and the balls I requested and the 2-5/16th ball and the 2" ball were just what I needed. the ball cap for the 2-5/16 ball fit perfect the ball cap for the 2" was really just made for the smaller ball. I would recommend that they make a ball cap for just the 2" ball. Got it to fit but not that well. I will need breaks for my boat trailer after this season and I plan on using etrailer for those parts. will need to call them before I make purchase as Im not sure how to size them up. 699996

So far I have pulled my trailer over 10k miles with my ‘16 Ram 2500. The hitch is easy to use and really helped with sway even when empty. Best choice I could have made for my trailer.

Good, solid product. We tow our 15,000 lb boat behind our Ford F-250 using it. You do need a pretty long torque wrench to tighten the nut to specs, and because there are no flats on the ball end, you have little choice but to damage the chrome plating in the throat a big with a pipe wrench as you tighten. But no big deal. 592829

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for Trailer With 1600 lbs of Tongue Weight
Whew. That's one heavy trailer! As long as the trailer tongue weight won't exceed 1600 lbs, the # EQ90-00-1600 Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System would be ideal. This particular system is meant to be used in a Class V hitch with a 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch receiver. This is the highest rated system Equal-i-zer offers. If your trailer's tongue weight will exceed 1600 lbs, the next step up is the Reese # RP66075 Strait-Line, good for up to 1700 lbs of tongue weight. The sway control component...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for Toy Hauler Tongue Weight 1,400-1,500 lbs
The Strait Line Weight Distribution System part # RP66075 will be the better choice for your tongue weight range of 1,400 to 1,500 lbs. This system has the best sway control design on the market which fights to prevent sway before it starts. It does require some frame drilling though which I can understand is something you'd rather not do, but once it's done you'd be good to go. The holes do not affect the integrity of the frame either as the bolts being tightened where the holes are drilled...

  • How to Torque Hitch Ball When Installing into Ball Mount
We don't have a combo of the Curt Hitch Ball # C40008 and Curt Ball Mount # C45340. The ball mount is extremely heavy-duty, rated up to 17,000 pounds. I think it's safe to assume you don't have a torque wrench rated up to 450 foot pounds just laying around. In which case you'll never really measure it at 450. When tightening the ball you want to make sure you get the lock washer so that it's completely flat. One way to help you do this is to put the ball mount in your hitch receiver...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 15,000 lb Box Trailer
I do have a solution for you but unfortunately you do have to use a TorkLift XL Shank like part # TLM9011 along with the SuperHitch on your tow vehicle to be able to use the Everest Weight Distribution System # TLWD1000. If 15,000 lbs is the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of your trailer or that is the most it will weigh when you are towing it then you can potentially use the Strait-Line # RP66075 instead. This is rated to tow up to a 17,000 lb trailer and it has a tongue weight...

  • How Do You Tighten a Hitch Ball that Doesn't have Wrench Flats
If you have a bench vise you can put a cloth around the ball and use the vise to hold it so you can torque the nut to spec on ball # C40008. Like you said this ball doesn't have wrench flats so there isn't really a better way than using a vise. If you do not already have a ball you could use # 63840 instead which does have wrench flats.

Any ball mounts that come with a hitch ball installed come like that directly from the manufacturer. If you do not need the full 17,000 lb capacity of the ball mount # C45340 that you referenced then you can use the Curt Heavy Duty Forged Ball Mount # C45331 which is essentially the same exact ball mount with a 2-5/16"...
