Video Transcript for MaxxTow Anti Rattle Clamp Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp. This is designed for 2" trailer hitch receivers. The part number is MT70258. To start off we're going to head out to the test course with just a standard cargo carrier loaded down with 200 pounds. As you can see as we head though the slalom there's some side-to-side movement with our carrier. You can imagine once the capacity we're to get up closer to 300, 400, or 500 pounds, how much movement we'd actually have side-to-side. It may give you a sensation of movement inside the truck, which might not be comfortable.

When we get to our bumps you can see how far that carrier actually moves up and down, generating a lot of noise and a lot of stress. Now we'll head back through the test course with our clamp in place. As you can see, that side-to-side movement is literally a thing of the past. We're not going to have to worry about that weight transfer side-to-side, and feeling it in the vehicle. As we get on our bumps look at what a difference we have here. A lot less noise, and a lot less up and down movement.

This will keep our cargo from being bounced around, and jostled around too much. To do our installation you'll see we're going to place the shank of our cargo carrier into our hitch, and we secure it with our clip. You can see the movement and play that currently exists there, that's not something that we want heading down the road, especially if we're transporting heavy items. What we'll do is slide our MaxxTow clamp right up to the face of our receiver tube, and then we're going to tighten up the two bolts here at the bottom. As we do this our two bolts are going to come up, and they're going to make contact with the bottom of our hitch, see there. We're going to use 5/8 wrench, and we want to tighten those bolts down, get them nice and snug. Sometimes tightening one is going to loosen the other, so you want to make sure you go back and forth. Then we can take our jam nuts, we're going to thread those right up to the bottom, and that does a great job of locking these bolts out, so they won't move in and out.

As you can see now, we've got a really nice solid fit. We don't have any movement in our connection point here. This works out great for cargo carriers, for bike racks, whatever it is that you want to use. The thing I like about the system is that we're not fighting gravity, or anything like that. The carrier naturally is going to want to be down as far as it can be in our receiver tube.

This does a great job of holding it in place. We're not going to have that bouncing that we're used to. We've all seen those cargo carriers going down the road bouncing up and down, you thought for sure something was going to fall out of them. This is going to eliminate that movement, both up and down and side-to-side. You can see the clamp itself. This is going to have a nice corrosion resistant finish to it, just like our bolts, so we're not going to have to worry about a bunch of corrosion and things like that. As you can see here now all that movement that we had, it's going to be a thing of the past. This is also going to help to reduce noise that we get out of the cargo carriers. A lot of times they can be pretty noisy as we're heading down the road. This ramp, it creates a little bit of noise, but as for the carrier itself, nice and quiet. Now that we've seen what a great improvement's been made that's going to complete our look at the MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp for 2" receiver hitches, part number MT70258.

Does not work on my John Deere Gator HPX615E. Neither front or rear receiver. Pay close attention to how your receiver is made One star was given not for product quality but to warn others that it may not be suitable for certain applications and it’s the purchasers responsibility to verify before ordering. . 525222

Comments
This anti-rattle clamp does require a collar on the hitch receiver to attach to. Most John Deere hitches are not designed with a collar.

Product is simple and effective...... performs as described. Only consideration is if there is a substantial "bead" of weld at the end of the receiver tube since this is where the bolts will bite into when tightened and if the bead is large enough, it presents a rounded surface rather than a flat one for the bolts to bite into potentially causing a "walking" situation. 502384

Did have to finally grind the landing zones for the tightening bolts flat, but its in place and performs well. Ends that nasty rattling!

I have a double hitch installed on my Class C motorhome for my bike rack and my Blue Ox to tow the car. I installed 2 of these and they completely eliminated all the movement in the assembly. I also added a Quiet Hitch Pin for the top receiver that did not have a lip. It also works perfectly. Thanks for great products! 403921

Looks like a good product but it did not fit on my 2018 Jeep Compass. Could not install it with bolt side down because the part of the Jeeps hitch where you attach safety chains to where too close to the receiver opening. I could only install it with bolts on top, but even then, it could fit over the receiver very well. The bolts were on the outer lip of the receiver and gauged the lip pretty good because it has a rounded lip instead of a flat lip. Not happy about that, but it did prevent rattling for the trip however, it looked like it was about to fall off. I ordered something else and will not use this one on my vehicle again. 582051

This receiver stabilizer is perfect for keeping my bike rack and other slide-in light duty hitch devices from wiggling around. This is not sold locally in Indianapolis in ANY store. 323359

Your product has a couple of structural defects: 1. With the bolts on the bottom, when the vehicle goes through a dip in the road, the bottom of the bolts grinds on the road. Your bolts are too long. 2. With the bolts on the bottom, when I went through a dip in the road and they scraped the asphalt, the result was a broken weld. Having China make your product is not a good idea. 3. With the bolts on the bottom, the tips of the bolts are about 1 3/4" below the bottom of the vehicle's receiver. The bolts should be on the top. But that is not the way the setup is pictured. So I like your product's potential, but not the way it is engineered or designed. 638875

If you are interested another anti-rattle device that does not have the clearance issues and as a little different design is the RM-061.

I am verry happy with the Product. It take a bit to get used to it on mounting it to the welded ring on the hitch to keep it from sliding off. Ones installed, it will keep the Bike Racke from ratteling. 471702

I’m very glad I bought it. Only two things wrong with it. 1 it’s made in China. 2 if you have a drop hitch like I do, you might have to cut a notch in the bottom where the gusset hits the clamp preventing the stinger from going in far enough to insert the hitch pin. Other than those two things it works great. My hitch has NEVER been quieter and stable. Very satisfied with the results. 517476

Ask the Experts about this MaxxTow Hitch Anti-Rattle

  • Can MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp # MT70258 be Used with a Travel Trailer
The MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp # MT70258 is an accessory anti-rattle device so provided you are using it on the back of your travel trailer in a hitch mounted accessory, such as a cargo carrier, you will be good to go. But it is not rated for use on the tow vehicle for towing a trailer. If that is what you are looking for I recommend the similar Pro Series device # PS63091. I have linked videos of both devices for you.

  • Recommended Anti-Rattle Device to Use for Trailer Towing
I do have a solution for you, however the MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp # MT70258 referenced in your question is not recommended for use when towing a trailer. This particular device is designed to be used with hitch-mounted accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers. A better option will be with the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 as long as the 2 inch hitch receiver on your Silverado has a ring or collar around it. This will simply slide over the shank of your ball mount and the U-bolt...

  • Recommended Anti-Rattle Device for Towing Boat Trailer
While we do have anti-rattle devices that are designed for use when towing, the MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp # MT70258, as you mentioned, cannot be used for this purpose. This particular device can only be used for non-trailer loads such as bike racks and cargo carriers. For an anti-rattle device that you can use while towing your boat trailer, I recommend the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061. This hitch immobilizer will eliminate rattle within the receiver with a simple bolt-on installation....

  • Anti-Rattle Device Recommendation for Setup that Uses Dual Hitch Adapter
Since the MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Clamp # MT70258 that you referenced is not designed for towing and you will be towing it would not be the best option. A better option would be the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch part # RM-061 which can be used when towing. This would work well for your setup too that has a dual recieve opening.

The integrated sleeve on this adapter is a great help in stabilizing your accessories for a much quieter ride. • Using a Stabilizing Hitch Clamp for a 80 Pound Cargo Carrier
The MaxxTow Anti-Rattle Hitch Clamp, part # MT70258, doesn't have a specific weight range that it's designed for. The weight won't really change its installation process, though going heavier, you'll want to double check the tightness of its bolts while you're using the clamp. I do recommend installing it prior to loading anything into your accessory for easiest use and installation, then after loading, double checking the bolt's tightness. • What Can Help Control the Bouncing and Shaking Seen on Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers
The bouncing and shaking that you saw in the video is the norm on the majority of cargo carriers on the market. The extended location from the hitch causes the carrier to bounce more than a hitch accessory that might sit closer to the vehicle. There are a few products that can help with the bounce. An anti-rattle device, like # MT70258 for 2 inch hitches, can help by securing the cargo carrier's hitch shank to the hitch receiver. The bolts will push the shank up tight against the top...

  • Comparing MaxxTow Anti Rattle Devices MT70283 and MT70258
They both work great. The difference is the part # MT70258 does use the two bolts, has a galvanized finish, and has a longer sleeve. The part # MT70283 uses 4 bolts, is powdercoated and does not have a sleeve at all basically. If it were me I would go with the 2 bolt version as it works great, will install a bit quicker, and because it is galvanized.

When a hitch carrier like this is installed and loaded up with a motorcycle (even a relatively light one like a smaller dirt bike) there will always be some rear end sag on the vehicle.
