Video Transcript for Reese Hitch Extender Review

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at Today, we're taking a look at the Reese line of hitch extenders. Now, these are designed for class three hitches and we've got a 14 or 18 inch option. Essentially, these are going to get us a lot of space between our current pinhole and a new pinhole location can help out in a lot of situations, whether we have a bike rack and a Jeep, cargo carry and a Jeep, where it won't fold up, sometimes we've got in-bed campers and we need to get our step back a little bit further because it's overhung, or maybe we just need something to get our pinhole further out from underneath our bumper, underneath a UTV. At any rate, these'll allow us to move that back without a great sacrifice in our capacity. Now, let's take a second and compare this hitch extender to a lot of the other ones that we offer. To start with, I like how nice and heavy duty it is.

This is very similar to the hitch extenders that we see from Curt in that regard. I like that it's rated for use in weight distribution, so you can use it that way if you'd like. The fit is also nice, where it goes in. But we do recommend an anti-rattle device. It has limited play up and down and side to side, so it's already kind of ahead of the game a little bit there. Now, with the heavy duty construction that this one has compared to some of the other ones, this one's going to be rated for accessory and for towing use.

Some of the other ones are going to be rated just for accessory use. But most of those are going to have an anti-rattle device. So if you're looking for one for use with just an accessory, one of those might be a good choice since it already has that available. If you need higher capacity, if you need an extended reach, this is going to be a really good idea. Here's one example of what we we're talking about. The interference from our spare tire will not allow our bike rack to go in far enough so we can engage that pinhole.

So using that extender, it's going to bring that out and make our rack much more useful. In this current situation, we wouldn't be able to fold it up. We could use it in the platform style, but we lose that option and it's something we always want to keep. Now, with the extender installed, as you can see, we've got all the room in the world that we'll need. Our bike rack's going to tilt up appropriately, tilt away fine. This is going to work out not only for bike racks or cargo carriers, but also steps, if you have an in-bed camper.

And I see these used more and more on the UTV types, where that receiver tube's way up under the back. This allows you to get it out there further, much more easier to use. Here's a good look at the shank that's actually going to go into your receiver tube that you currently have. As you can see, this is that nice heavy duty solid shank, so unlike a lot of the other ones, where this is hollow, this is going to give us superior strength. Now, to install your extender, we just want to slide this in like any other hitch accessory. I'm going to get those pinholes lined up, and we're going to use a pin to secure it. Now, the pin isn't included, so be sure to pick one of those up if you don't already have one. We have plenty available on our website. You'll notice with that installed, we've got a little bit of play here. Really, for a hitch extender, that's less play than I felt with a lot of the other ones, so I think that's a good pro for it.Now, as far as the extension length, it's going to be from center of hitch pinhole to center of hitch pinhole. So this one's the 14 inch, but remember, it's also available in an 18 if you need a little bit more space. Now, overall, the construction is really nice. We talked about the solid shank being heavy duty and you've got a good quality black powder coat finish that's going to coat everything there, keeping it really good looking and to resist corrosion. They finished off the end here with a chrome plated plastic cap. Once we have that out, that's going to allow us to slide our accessory in and that chrome piece'll stay there. Now, to secure any of your items in place, you'll be using the 5/8 inch diameter pinhole here. That's right in line with any of your class three accessories, and there's plenty of room, so if you wanted to use a locking hitch pin or anti-rattle device, no problem there. Then your receiver tube opening is also two inch by two inch, so again, that's going to work out with any class three type accessory. Now, as far as weight capacities go, the extender has a 400 pound tongue weight limit, so that's the maximum downward force, and it's going to offer a 4,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It's going to be the total weight of your trailer and anything that you load up on it. It is rated for use with weight distribution. If you use weight distribution, the tongue weight's going to go up to 650, gross trailer weight rating goes up to 6,500. But when using an extender, it does reduce your hitch's capacity. The nice thing about this one, it only reduces it by 35% rather than the 50% we're used to seeing. So we're going to go off of the extender's weight rating or 65% of our hitch's weight rating. Now, any time you're using an extender like this that doesn't have an anti-rattle device, even though your accessory will, you can see there's still a little bit of movement and still a little bit of play. If you're just hauling a trailer, I don't think that's really going to be a big deal for you. If you're using an accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier, though, I would recommend picking up an anti-rattle device just to keep this point right here in which the two connect not moving. If we can get that to not move and our item has a anti-rattle device, everything'll be nice and solid. And that's going to complete our look at the Reese hitch extender.

This hitch extender is exactly what we needed to accommodate our new bike rack and still be able to tow our boat. Great match up for our specific needs. 655187

Extender looks to be extremely well built. Fits my hitch perfectly. 459887

- RP11003

The extension seem very sturdy and should function fine. However, it will not fit into my hitch adapter without grinding the corners of the solid bar. The corners are too square and need to be rounded off a bit. That's way only 4 stars. Haven't got to use it yet. Got it for towing my Samurai behind my truck camper. 427336

Do you have a question about this Hitch Adapter?

  • Trailer Hitch Extender for Use with a Tow Dolly
  • We do have extenders that you can use to tow a trailer or tow dolly but many extenders are designed for flat towing a vehicle with 4 wheels on the ground and not for use with a tow dolly. Reese extender # RP11003 is rated for 4,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 400 pounds tongue weight but none that can be used to tow a trailer are rated as high as the Blue Ox extension. The other option is to use a longer ball mount than what you have now in order to get more space between the...

  • Trailer Hitch Extender For Weight Distribution So Tailgate Can Be Opened
  • We do have hitch extenders that will work with a 2-inch trailer htich receiver. There are tongue weight and trailer weight ratings for the extenders you need to pay close attention to. For a 7-inch extension I recommend part # HE06. With weight distribution, this limits th gross trailer weight to 7,000-lbs and tongue weight at 700-lbs. For a 14-inch extender I recommend part # RP11003. The gross trailer weight with this extender is 6,500-lbs and 650-lbs tongue weight. We also offer...

  • Recommended Hitch Extension for 2004 Ford F-350 with Camper Towing 7100 lbs Travel Trailer
  • If you need 12 inches to clear your camper, you might be interested in the MaxxTow # MT70024. This hitch extender will give you 12 inches of clearance from your current pin hole location. Please not that using a hitch extender will decrease the weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50 percent. It sounds like your vehicle has a weight capacity of 15000 lbs, and a tongue weight of 1500 which would be well within your weight limit even with the reduced capacity using the hitch extender....

  • How Much Does Hitch Extension Reduce Capacity of Hitch Really?
  • It is easy to see where the confusion comes in because the answer is all of the above. The reduction in capacity depends on how big the hitch is and what the manufacturer specifies, so it can be anywhere between 25% and 50%. You may be able to use the 14" Reese Hitch Extender # RP11003, which, when used with a weight distribution system, is rated for a maximum tongue weight of 650 lbs and max trailer weight of 6,500 lbs. However, it will reduce the overall capacity of your hitch by 35...

  • Can a 12 Extender be Used to Tow a 3,000 lb Trailer with a Class A Motorhome
  • Any 12" extender that would fit your application will reduce your overall hitch weight capacity. The Reese Hitch Extender # RP11003 (14") will reduce it by 35% while most others will reduce it by 50%. Options like the Curt Hitch Extension and Reducer # C45048 that you referenced are meant to fit a 2-1/2" hitch receiver and are typically used for a pickup with a camper in the bed. If your trailer hitch and Class A are rated high enough you will be able to tow your trailer and car with...
