Video Transcript for MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter Review

Today we'll be taking a look at the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter, Part Number MT70355. The MaxxTow Hitch Adapter is going to let you easily convert your Class 2 1-1/4 receiver to a 2-inch receiver allowing you to use your 2-inch accessories. The 4-1/2 inch rise is going to give us more ground clearance here at the rear of our vehicle for our accessories. Now, we're using our cardinal carrier with our hitch adapter here today, but it'd also work great for your bike racks or any other 2-inch accessories. Now, please note it does cut your ton weight capacity in half and it is not recommended for towing, so no ball mounts. This is a much more economical solution than having two bike racks or two car carriers with multiple vehicles, and it's definitely cheaper than having to purchase a different hitch. Now, in addition to the rise we have a 6-1/2 inch extension. That's from pen hole to pen hole. It's also made of a sturdy steel construction with a nice black powder coat finish, so it's going to resist rust and corrosion.

It has a 350 pound weight capacity. Now, it's an extraordinarily easy installation. We have our adapter plug and our 1-1/4 receiver and we have our accessory plugged into our 2-inch adapter. Now, the pinning clips are not included, so you'll need to pick some up here at etrailer.com. Here at the adapter end we've got our 5/8 hitch pin and clip. This is going to be Part Number PC3.

Here at the hitch portion we've got a PC2, that's going to be our 1/2 inch pin and clip. That's going to complete our look at the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter, 1 inch 1/4 or 2 inch with a 4-1/2 inch rise, Part Number MT70355.

Well built accessory with a quality painted finish. Great value! I received my shipment very quickly using the most economical shipping option. ETrailer communicated with me via email regarding the status of my shipment. Their tracking feature is the best I've ever experienced. I highly recommend buying from this company. 167331

The part was a good solid piece. Very well welded. However I would have loved the 11/4" piece to have been a bit longer and maybe an additional hole. I had to drill an extra hole because the 2" piece was rubbing on the bumper and holes wouldn't match. But it got here quickly and I was able to track package all the way. 165551

Previously, I had purchased a straight adapter that left our bikes nearly dragging in the road so I looked for an alternative and found this offset hitch. It works great and the bikes now ride high enough that I don't have to worry about secondary roads and uneven work areas. The construction is very sturdy and has held up just fine under the weight of 3 adult bikes.. 421308

- MT70355
by:

Does exactly what it says it will do. I had to grind a little edge off the end so it would go into my receiver all the way, but my other straight adapter was the same way, so I think that is the receiver's fault. When I first drove with just the adapter in place, I could hear it rattle on bumps, but with the cargo carrier also in place I didn't hear any rattles. It would be better if it could use an anti-rattle threaded hitch pin as that would also reduce rocking that is compounded from having two receivers. Note that it is stamped "Not for Towing" 218242

Very sturdy, exactly what I was looking for. For cars with a hitch lower to the ground, this adapter can allow you to add a cargo holder without that awful scraping sound from riding too low. Product was delivered quickly and the customer service from etrailer was outstanding. They notified me each step of the way. Very satisfied. 83556

Product delivered in timely manner. Hitch is exactly as stated. Had a hard time finding exactly what 3was needed, but natter going to e trailer and continuing to refine my search I was able to find the right product. This is not the first time i have used E Trailer. Both experiences have been painless. The only issue I have is the cost of shipping vs the cost of the product. This is not e trailers fault. Just a comment on todays transportation costs. 83301

Wish the extension was a little longer to get out from under the bumper, but it is as described. Took a few weeks to arrive, a somewhat unusual part that is not in stock. But eTrailer contacted me with updates several times notifying me of the status. Good job with that!! 82308

A well made product. Heavy duty with excellent welds and powder coating. The online measurements are accurate. I had been looking for a product that would raise the height of my cargo carrier when used on my Jeep TJ. This did the job. It raised the carrier up about 4 inches and cleared the spare tire with no problems. The service from etrailer was EXCELLENT. I received my order in 2 days. 453096

It is well made however I wish it was a better fit for the Curt Hitch I installed. Seems to have too much space which makes the MT70355 wiggle in the hitch. Same thing when the bike rack or cargo basket is installed in the 2” side, it wiggles. 542085

The MaxxTow Hitch Adapter works great but is approximately 1/8 to long on the end that goes in the receiver. That is the reason for 4 stars, if it fit the receiver properly it would have been a 5 Star product. 514767

Comments

This adapter is intended to be used in Class II hitches, and that may be the reason this is not fitting in your receiver hitch, especially if you do have a Class 1 hitch.

Great product, and very well planned installation on a brand new HR-V. The video indicated I would have to bend the muffler heat shield a little, but I installed that bolt/side first and let it lever the room it needed (practically none). I would say that getting inboard rear muffler isolation mount back on would be tough for a lot of people, as it was a tight space and required a great deal of prying - muffler backwards and rubber mount downwards. I also purchased an adapter to go from 1-1/4" to a 2" receiver with a 4-1/2" rise, and this made using my existing 2" flat rack and bike rack immediately usable on this vehicle. The measurements suggested it would be a close fit, and the adapter was either just touching the plastic bumper (we don't want rub marks!), or about a 1/16" away from it. I ground off about 1/8" from the top tapered down about 3/4" and it's perfect. 318643

This is exactly what we needed! After my girlfriend and I were in an accident in our RV, we had to downsize everything into a Kia Soul. This product allowed us to attach a tow rack to the back of our vehicle and expand our carrying capacity, allowing us to take most of our belongings back home. The 4" lift prevents the rack from dragging and scrapping across the ground on uneven terrain. We couldn't be happier with this purchase. 476340

I always look to etrailer when I need solutions to problems or accessories for hitch or trailer needs. They haven't failed me yet. The problem this time was an inexpensive cargo hauler picked up locally that hung too low from our SUV and would drag on certain drive entrances. So, the solution was hitch adapter. It raises the hauler just enough without interfering with the rear door. Thanks again.... 504861

Please be aware that using a hitch adapter will lower the tongue weight capacity and the towing capacity of your hitch by half.

I recently added a hitch to my new Alltrack, but they would only install a 1.25” class 2 receiver. However, all of my accessories are 2” — my bike rack, cargo carrier, etc. — so, I bought an adaptor from the installer — NONE of my accessories would fit, it was just too tight. This Maxxtow adaptor works perfectly. It’s sturdy, tight, and has the added bonus allowing me to open the tailgate with bike loaded and of getting my cargo above the exhaust. Perfect solution. 512321

Kind of an oxymoron as the weight of this adapter probably exceeds the class one hitch weight rating. The manufacturer states that adding this adapter reduces the hitch weight rating by half. Since the tongue rating started at 300# the reduction takes it to 150#, so there is little room for the weight of the bike rack and bikes. Overall the product was as described but I either missed the rating or it was not in the description. Quality of the piece is good. Powder coating was good as were the welds. 83421

The product is as advertised.. I have a 2013 Corrola with a hitch that I use for a bicycle rack.. It was hitting going in and out of driveways. My problem was poor planning on my part because the adapter did not fit, Would not clear the bumper.. I ended up drilling a new hitch pin hole and it works fine.. 129612

Not sure whether it is the receiver or the hitch, but could not install the hitch all of the way in without cutting off 5/16 of an inch from the hitch due to a stop inside the receiver. Very well built and works great for hauling a bike rack. 522168

Comments

The obstruction you speak of is a stop or a punch thats intentionally placed in the receiver tube that prevents higher-rated Class ll accessories from being used. Some hitch manufacturers do this with their Class I hitches as a safety measure to prevent the hitch from being accidentally overloaded. The stop or punch is designed to prevent a Class II rated accessory like this adapter you purchased from being slid into the receiver of a Class I hitch far enough for the hitch pin holes to line up.

My new Subaru came with a 1 1/4" hitch, and I had three attachments for bikes and canoes that were for a 2" hitch. This adapter is secured inside the 1 1/4" hitch receiver. I have not yet traveled with a loaded bike rack on it. My only concern is that it could have a little extra play for things to rock around, since it creates an additional potential point of rotation. I will probably insert a shim to tighten the fit. 520131

I spent over $100.00 on adapters to extend & raise hitches level on my Prius to carry my wheel chair lift with little resultes, keep draging thr ground & driveways, etc. The local U-Haul store suggested that check out e-trailer on line. I found the exact product that would do the job. Excellent results, quality well made, all problems are gone. Very happy, My Daughter has also ordered same for her Prius. My delivery was 4 days to Arizona. So much Thanks. 152498

I had to cut it to make it shorter to fit my receiver. Other than that it works great. I had to modify it to work for me to use and I used it for a bike carrier , I wouldn't use it for a trailer after I cut it down but if it fits your reciever without cutting it there wouldn't be any reason you couldn't use it for anything you wanted. I gave it 3 stars for that reason. 638399

Comments

The reason the adapter didnt originally fit your hitch is that you probably have a Class I hitch. To prevent higher-rated class II accessories from being used, some hitch manufacturers weld or punch a stop into the receiver tube. We dont recommend cutting on a hitch accessory because the heat build-up can have a negative effect on the structure of the metal and thus weaken it.

Keep in mind that using this adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by half. This means that anything carried on the hitch cannot weigh more than half the hitch tongue weight capacity.

I received this faster than expected, and it was just as pictured. The construction is quite good, and the welding is excellent. This thing will last for years. • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Adapter for 2011 BMW 328i Sedan
  • The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24857 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2011 BMW 328i Sedan. This is a Class I trailer hitch that will provide a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. I have included the installation details that you can look over. Then for a hitch adapter that will expand the receiver opening to 2 inches, I recommend the Brophy Hitch Adapter # HT5R. • Difference Between Hitch Adapters Brophy part # HT5R and MaxxTow part # MT70355
  • The biggest advantage the Brophy part # HT5R has is that it will fit in a Class I hitch which is most of the 1-1/4 inch hitches available. The MaxxTow part # MT70355 only fits Class II hitches so it's application is a bit more limited.

The hitch you referenced part # 24812 has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs so it would only have a 100 lb capacity with that extension. The T2 part # TH9044 that you referenced weighs 60 lbs so you would only have 40 lbs of capacity for bikes with the setup you referenced. Your best solution would be to convert your Thule...

This will adapt your Class II 1-1/4 inch receiver to a 2 inch receiver that's raised just a bit. Keep in mind using this hitch adapter will reduce your tongue weight capacity by 50%, limiting the number and amount of bikes you can put onto the rack.

  • How to Transfer the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443 Between 1-1/4" and 2" Hitch Receivers
  • Both the MaxxTow # MT70032 and # MT70355 adapters are great products but since they will reduce the weight capacity of the Draw-Tite # 24966 on your 2016 Toyota Prius by 50% I have a better solution for you. We actually carry replacement tongues for the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443. What I recommend doing is replacing your current 2" tongue, part # 8880580, with the 1-1/4" tongue, part # 8880580, so that the HoldUp will be compatible with ther 1-1/4" receiver. You can then use the Brophy...

  • What is the Distance from the 1 1/4 pin hole to the Back of the 2 Receiver Tube
  • I spoke to my contact at MaxxTow and he informed me that the distance from the 1-1/4 inch hole to the back of the 2 inch opening section is 3 inches. Check the picture I attached also.

  • Recommended Hitch Adapter for Class I Hitch Compatibility of Kuat Sherpa 2.0 for 2 Inch Receiver
  • All of the 2013 Honda Civic trailer hitch receivers are a Class I so that will be limiting and the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper is about 4 inches. That means the # MT70355 adapter will not be compatible as it only has a 3 inch ability and is also only confirmed to fit Class II hitches. You can use the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD to make your Kuat Sherpa 2.0 # SH22G compatible with your Class I hitch. This hitch expander...

  • Options for Using 2-Inch Class III Bike Rack in 1-1/4-Inch Class II Hitch
  • A hitch adapter can allow a 2-inch accessory item like your Thule rack to be used in a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch like Draw-Tite # 36538. But the downside to using any adapter is that it will cause you to lose 50-percent of your hitch's capacity. This is due to the change in the geometry of the system when an adapter is added. An adapter like Maxx Tow # MT70355 will fit your 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch and provide a 2-inch receiver opening as well as a 4-1/2-inch rise for better ground...

  • Distance Between Hitch Pin Holes on the Brophy Hitch Adapter part # HT5R
  • The distance from the back of the 2 inch hitch opening of the Brophy Hitch adapter part # HT5R back to the center of the hitch pin hole on the 1-1/4 inch shank is 3-3/8. I attached a picture where that dimension has been added as well.

  • What are the Shank and Receiver Dimensions for Roadmaster High-Low Hitch Adapter # RM-048-6
  • The Roadmaster High-low adapter # RM-048-6 fits in a 2 inch receiver and has a 2 inch receiver on the other end. We do have a similar product that fits in a 1-1/4 inch receiver and has a 2 inch receiver on the other end. It is # MT70355. Please check the laws in your area because in some places it is illegal to leave a ball mount or other item in the hitch when not in use. I also recommend a hitch lock, # 7683 for the 2 inch end or # 1472DAT for the 1-1/4 inch end. Or you can get...

  • 1-1/4-Inch to 2-Inch Hitch Adapter for Use on Subaru Forester
  • There are several different classes of 1-1/4-inch hitches offered for the Subaru Forester. Without knowing the vehicle's model year I cannot be absolutely sure if the hitch on the vehicle is a light-duty Class I type or a higher capacity Class II. Please note that 1-1/2-inches is not a standard size for a receiver opening; they are typically 1-1/4-inch, 2-inch or 2-1/2-inch on heavy duty trucks. We do offer hitch adapters and extenders that will allow 2-inch hitch accessories to be used...

  • 2 inch Hitch Adapter with Rise Availability for a 2000 Toyota Camry
  • As long as the hitch installed on your 2000 Toyota Camry is a Class II hitch like the part # 36336 you can use the adapter part # MT70355 which will give you a 2 inch hitch 4-1/2 inches higher than the opening of your hitch. For a locking hitch pin for the 2 inch portion of this you would want the part # 7683. You should note that when you use an adapter like this you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half.
