Video Transcript for MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter Review

Today we'll be taking a look at the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter, Part Number MT70355. The MaxxTow Hitch Adapter is going to let you easily convert your Class 2 1-1/4 receiver to a 2-inch receiver allowing you to use your 2-inch accessories. The 4-1/2 inch rise is going to give us more ground clearance here at the rear of our vehicle for our accessories. Now, we're using our cardinal carrier with our hitch adapter here today, but it'd also work great for your bike racks or any other 2-inch accessories. Now, please note it does cut your ton weight capacity in half and it is not recommended for towing, so no ball mounts. This is a much more economical solution than having two bike racks or two car carriers with multiple vehicles, and it's definitely cheaper than having to purchase a different hitch. Now, in addition to the rise we have a 6-1/2 inch extension. That's from pen hole to pen hole. It's also made of a sturdy steel construction with a nice black powder coat finish, so it's going to resist rust and corrosion.

It has a 350 pound weight capacity. Now, it's an extraordinarily easy installation. We have our adapter plug and our 1-1/4 receiver and we have our accessory plugged into our 2-inch adapter. Now, the pinning clips are not included, so you'll need to pick some up here at etrailer.com. Here at the adapter end we've got our 5/8 hitch pin and clip. This is going to be Part Number PC3.

Here at the hitch portion we've got a PC2, that's going to be our 1/2 inch pin and clip. That's going to complete our look at the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter, 1 inch 1/4 or 2 inch with a 4-1/2 inch rise, Part Number MT70355.

Previously, I had purchased a straight adapter that left our bikes nearly dragging in the road so I looked for an alternative and found this offset hitch. It works great and the bikes now ride high enough that I don't have to worry about secondary roads and uneven work areas. The construction is very sturdy and has held up just fine under the weight of 3 adult bikes.. 421308

I recently added a hitch to my new Alltrack, but they would only install a 1.25” class 2 receiver. However, all of my accessories are 2” — my bike rack, cargo carrier, etc. — so, I bought an adaptor from the installer — NONE of my accessories would fit, it was just too tight. This Maxxtow adaptor works perfectly. It’s sturdy, tight, and has the added bonus allowing me to open the tailgate with bike loaded and of getting my cargo above the exhaust. Perfect solution. 512321

Great product, and very well planned installation on a brand new HR-V. The video indicated I would have to bend the muffler heat shield a little, but I installed that bolt/side first and let it lever the room it needed (practically none). I would say that getting inboard rear muffler isolation mount back on would be tough for a lot of people, as it was a tight space and required a great deal of prying - muffler backwards and rubber mount downwards. I also purchased an adapter to go from 1-1/4" to a 2" receiver with a 4-1/2" rise, and this made using my existing 2" flat rack and bike rack immediately usable on this vehicle. The measurements suggested it would be a close fit, and the adapter was either just touching the plastic bumper (we don't want rub marks!), or about a 1/16" away from it. I ground off about 1/8" from the top tapered down about 3/4" and it's perfect. 318643

Product delivered in timely manner. Hitch is exactly as stated. Had a hard time finding exactly what 3was needed, but natter going to e trailer and continuing to refine my search I was able to find the right product. This is not the first time i have used E Trailer. Both experiences have been painless. The only issue I have is the cost of shipping vs the cost of the product. This is not e trailers fault. Just a comment on todays transportation costs. 83301

A well made product. Heavy duty with excellent welds and powder coating. The online measurements are accurate. I had been looking for a product that would raise the height of my cargo carrier when used on my Jeep TJ. This did the job. It raised the carrier up about 4 inches and cleared the spare tire with no problems. The service from etrailer was EXCELLENT. I received my order in 2 days. 453096

The part was a good solid piece. Very well welded. However I would have loved the 11/4" piece to have been a bit longer and maybe an additional hole. I had to drill an extra hole because the 2" piece was rubbing on the bumper and holes wouldn't match. But it got here quickly and I was able to track package all the way. 165551

Well built accessory with a quality painted finish. Great value! I received my shipment very quickly using the most economical shipping option. ETrailer communicated with me via email regarding the status of my shipment. Their tracking feature is the best I've ever experienced. I highly recommend buying from this company. 167331

Very sturdy, exactly what I was looking for. For cars with a hitch lower to the ground, this adapter can allow you to add a cargo holder without that awful scraping sound from riding too low. Product was delivered quickly and the customer service from etrailer was outstanding. They notified me each step of the way. Very satisfied. 83556

Ask the Experts about this MaxxTow Hitch Adapters

  • Effects on Weight Capacity from Using Hitch Adapters
Hitch adapters can be a convenient way to join accessories of different sizes, such as allowing use of a 2-inch hitch bike rack or towing ball mount in a smaller 1-1/4-inch hitch. Examples of such items are MaxxTow # MT70355 and Curt # C45785. These both provide the same function but the MaxxTow also has 4-1/2-inches of rise built-in to give you more ground clearance for using a bike rack, for example. The "dark side" of hitch adapters like these is that they also unavoidably reduce...

  • Difference Between Hitch Adapters Brophy part # HT5R and MaxxTow part # MT70355
The biggest advantage the Brophy part # HT5R has is that it will fit in a Class I hitch which is most of the 1-1/4 inch hitches available. The MaxxTow part # MT70355 only fits Class II hitches so it's application is a bit more limited.

  • Will Class II MaxxTow Adapter with Rise Fit Class I Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for 2015 Hyundai Sonata
It sounds like you're already aware that some Class I trailer hitch receivers have a weld stop in them to prevent people from being able to use Class II accessories in them. With that being said your Draw-Tite hitch, part # 24965, does not have the weld stop so you can use the MaxxTow adapter, part # MT70355, in it. So the answer is yes, the adapter fits into the hitch. One other thing you need to know is that the adapter cuts your hitch's tongue weight capacity in half. So you only...

  • Best Anti-Rattle Locking Hitch Pin for a Trailer Hitch Adapter with 1-1/4 Inch Shank
The 1-1/4 inch shank on the MaxxTow adapter # MT70355 is solid, see picture, so you will not be able to use anti-rattle hitch lock # 63147. But I do have a solution that you might like. You could use locking hitch pin # 5200 with anti-rattle device # 93347. It may not be the prettiest set up but it will give you a lock and anti-rattle.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2002 Honda Accord to Carry Bikes
For a trailer hitch I recommend # 24791. The other hitches will either come with a ball mount, which you will not need for a bike rack, or require a stabilization strap for non-trailer loads. The Draw-Tite hitch # 24791 is just the hitch and hardware and it does not require a strap for non-trailer loads. Once installed from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the rear bumper is approximately 5 inches. The 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch adapters with a rise such as # MT70355 would end...

The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24857 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2011 BMW 328i Sedan. This is a Class I trailer hitch that will provide a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. I have included the installation details that you can look over. • Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota Matrix and Converting 2 inch T2 Bike Rack to 1-1/4 inch
The thing about hitch adapters/extenders like the part # MT70355 that you referenced is that they reduce the capacity of the hitch they are used on by 50 percent. The hitch you referenced part # 24812 has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs so it would only have a 100 lb capacity with that extension. The T2 part # TH9044 that you referenced weighs 60 lbs so you would only have 40 lbs of capacity for bikes with the setup you referenced. Your best solution would be to convert your Thule...

  • Hitch-Mount Trike Carrier for 1-1/4-Inch Class II Hitch
I understand your predicament, having a hitch and hitch bike rack that will not work together. Smaller vehicles typically accept smaller hitches, and for your 2018 Ford EcoSport compact SUV only 1-1/4-inch Class II hitches are offered since the car itself cannot handle the load that a 2-inch Class III hitch typically can. We offer 1-1/4-inch Draw-Tite # 36660 and Curt # C12188 hitches both of which are rated for 350-lbs of tongue weight. Hitch adapters like # MT70355, # HTAD, # HT5R,...

Your best bet would be to use a cargo carrier designed for a 1-1/4 inch hitch that has an angled shank to provide the additional ground clearance you're looking for. I'd recommend the Curt # C18110, which is compatible with the Class II hitch you're interested in and features an angled shank that would provide over a 3 inch rise for improved ground clearance. All of the trailer hitches we offer for your vehicle are Class II trailer hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. The only way to carry your bike rack with a 2 inch shank is to use a hitch adapter. • Ground Clearance Concerns with Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack on 2015 VW Jetta
Because of the difference in vehicle frames and styles, ground clearance can be more of a concern on certain vehicles when using hitch-mounted accessories. This isn't abnormal, as some vehicles like your VW Jetta just require that the hitch receiver sit a bit lower to the ground because of the rear design and frame space available for mounting the hitch. There are things you can do to offset this, such as getting a bike rack that features a rise in its shank (which your Yakima HoldUp...
