Video Transcript for MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter Review

Today we are going to be taking a look at the Max Tow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter. Inch and a quarter to two inch, 11 inches long. Part number MT70032. This is a much more economical solution than having to buy two bike racks or two cargo carriers, for multiple vehicles. The Max Tow Hitch Adapter easily converts your Class 2 inch and a quarter receiver to a two inch receiver, allowing you to use two inch accessories. Now we are using a cargo carrier with our adapter here today, but it also would be great for bike racks or any other two inch accessories. Now, please keep in mind, it does cut your tongue weight capacity in half and it is not to be used for towing, so no ball mounts.

The distance between the pin holes measure six and a half inches, so you are going to be a bit of an extension, with this adapter as well. Now the pin and clips are not included, so you will need pick some up here at etrailer.com. For our adapter side, we have got a 5/8 pin and clip, and that is going to be part number PC3. For our hitch side we have got a PC2, which is our 1/2 inch pin and clip. It's made out of a sturdy stu construction, with a corrosive resistant black powder coat finish, so it is going to stand up to the elements. Now it is an extraordinarily easy installation.

We have just got our adapter plugged into our receiver, and then our accessory plugged into our adapter. That is going to complete our look at the Max Tow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter, inch and a quarter to two inches, at 11 inches long. Part number MT70032.

The adapter is a simple piece of hardware but does exactly what it's designed to do. I purchased it to facilitate the use of a Thule bicycle rack - which the seller informed me had a 2" hitch - with my 1.25" trailer hitch. Turned out the seller didn't realize the Thule's 2" hitch was a removable sleeve, concealing the underlying 1.25" hitch. So now I have an adapter I don't need for this application but will hold onto in case I run into a situation that might require it. The adapter will last forever and arrived quickly and well-packaged from eTrailer.com. There's nothing these folks don't carry, at excellent prices and with great service. 600265

While it solved the problem of getting a 2" entry for my luggage carrier I find it very long, and from an engineering standpoint I think unnecessarily so. It is very strong but also extremely heavy and this necessitates clamping both the in and out which makes it even more costly! I would like to see a company engineer a shorter and lighter design, with thinner metal plate reinforced by external rings as at the end of this one! Also it should include spacers to fix the "rattle" movements at no charge! 348418

Comments
The adapter works, but is long, very heavy, and rattles. Time to next year maybe? install a 2-inch hitch.

MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter - 1-1/4" (Class II) to 2" Hitch - 11" Long
$19.37
I have checked with my contacts at Maxxtow and this adapter is specifically designed to be used for accessories only. It is not designed or rated for towing applications. When used for accessories please also note that the use of this adapter will decrease the hitch's tongue weight capacity by fifty percent.

I have a small car (2004 Ford Focus ZX3) with a 1.25" hitch and receiver. Managed to acquire a sweet bicycle rack with a 2" tongue. What to do? Buy a 1.25" to 2" adaptor and hook everything together, of course. Works exactly as designed - tight fit, excellent finish, and just does exactly what it's supposed to do for very, very little money. 614885

Please be aware that using an adapter such as this will lower the capacity of your hitch by 50. Most Class I hitches will have a 200 lb tongue weight capacity maximum amount of weight that can safely be suspended from the hitch, using this adapter would lower that to 100 lbs. This would mean that the bikes and rack could weigh no more than 100 lbs in total.

Ask the Experts about this MaxxTow Hitch Adapters

  • Using Trailer Hitch Adapter to Expand 1-1/4 Inch Receiver for Use with 2 Inch Accessories
As you mentioned, using a trailer hitch adapter like the MaxxTow # MT70032 in order to use 2 inch hitch accessories with your 1-1/4 inch receiver opening will reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity by 50%. As long as you remain under this reduced capacity with your bike and bike rack, this will be perfectly safe to use. I just recommend adding a stabilizing strap like the Curt # 18050 to reduce any added movement that the adapter might cause. Keep in mind that this particular adapter...

If you want regular hitch pins the for a 1/2 inch you can use # F-4. And for a 5/8 inch you can use # C21510. For locking pins you can use # 7680 for the 1/2 inch and # 5201 for a 5/8 inch. I've linked our selection of Class II ball mounts for you to take a look at. You can use an adapter to increase the tube size to a 2 inch, like # MT70032, however this is going to reduce the weight capacity of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36284 by 50 percent making it 1750 pounds with only 150 pounds of tongue weight. So yes, you will have more options of ball mounts to choose from, but you will have a lot less towing capacity. Choosing the correct rise and drop depends...

A hitch adapter like the MaxxTow # MT70032 that you referenced will not allow you to safely use your 2-inch bike rack in your 1-1/4-inch hitch because all adapters like this have the unavoidable side-effect of cutting hitch capacity in HALF. Use of any hitch adapter such as the MaxxTow # MT70032 will cause you to lose half of your hitch's rated capacity due to the change in the geometry of the whole system.
