Video Transcript for MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender Review

Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at Etrailer.com. Today, we're taking a look at the MaxxTow Dual-Hitch Extension. This is going to allow us to turn our single receiver tube opening on our hitch into a double receiver tube opening. This allows us to add some combos like our trailer and a bike rack, maybe a trailer and a cargo carrier. It allows us to take extra items along with us, we don't have to pick just one or the other. It's also going to give us a 12-inch extension.

So, from our original hitch pin hole to our new pin hole location, it'll be 12 inches further back. That allows us, as you can see here, to clear the spare tire on our jeep, or maybe a bumper overhang, something like that. Now the weight capacity for our extender is going to be 400 pounds worth of tongue weight or 4000 pounds of gross trailer weight. One thing to keep in mind though, this is going to reduce your hitch's capacity by 50%. So, divide your hitch's capacity in half and use whichever is lower, either that or the 404,000. Now the dual-hitch receiver is gonna install like any accessory will, with the hollow shank that we have here, that will allow us to use internal style anti-rattle devices if you choose to do that.Just want to slide that in so our pin holes line up.

We're gonna use our pin and clip to secure it. Now keep in mind you will need to provide your own pin and clip, so if you don't have one, pick one up. You can get them here at Etrailer.com. Now, a few dimensions that we'll be concerned with will be from the center of our original hitch pin hole to the center of our new hitch pin hole. That's gonna be 12 inches.

From the center of that hole to the center of our upper receiver hole, we've got six and a quarter, so this is gonna promote a six and a quarter inch rise.Another one I'd be concerned with, is the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of our upper receiver. You can see on our jeep here, with that being six inches, it gives us just enough clearance where it won't make contact with that tire. If your overhang is greater than that, you might run into interference issues, so just keep that in mind. Now this is going to give us two class thee or two inch by two inch receiver tube openings. The one on the top is only for accessories, the one on the bottom can be used for accessories or towing, that's your choice.

Regardless of what you put in there though, we're gonna secure it with a five-eighths inch diameter pin hole, just to use a class three accessory, should fit in there fine. Whether that's going to be a standard hitch pin, maybe you want to do a locking hitch pin or anti-rattle device, those are all gonna work, plenty of room there for that. With the movement that we'll show you a little bit later, I do recommend anti-rattle devices for all of your connection points here, just so you can eliminate some of the movement and slop. Now as far as construction goes, seems really well built. Welds are gonna go all the way around all of our connection points there, so it should be good and sturdy. Then they've got it coated with a black powder coat finish, so we don't have to worry about corrosion for a long time. Now to get the other accessories installed, just gonna slide them in, just like any other ball mount will. Use our pin and clip, again those aren't provided so you have to provide your own. That'll give us a great point to attach our trailer, and we've still got room for our bike rack. Now one thing to note, when we use an extender like this, we're moving our ball mount back further. So if you're gonna be trailering with it, it's very likely you're gonna need to extend both your safety chains and your wiring to make your connections. Now here's a good view of the movement that we're talking. You can see a little bit of side to side, it kind of transfers into a lot back here for our bike rack. This bike rack already has an anti-rattle device on it, but you can see that front pin, just being a pin allows it to move side to side. That's why we strongly recommend getting anti-rattle devices on each or your connection points, where you just won't have to worry about it.And that's going to complete our look at the MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extension.(Music).

This has been a great addition because it allows me to place my bike rack higher on my trailer. Also I can then put a rack into the lower receiver. Best thing I have done to the hind end. Coupling this with the hitch anti-rattle works very well. 629747

This hitch wedge does stabilize hitch laterally but does little to limit vertical movement, which in my experience is the primary issue. It seemed to bend pretty easily but without instructions suggesting how much torque to apply I may have overtightened it in an attempt to silence the hitch. Easy to install and for the price likely a great product for some users. 131917

I just returned from my first RV excursion using this Double Hitch Extender. I was able to pull my M/C trailer AND mount my bike rack in the add-on receiver. Product is High Quality and Rock solid. I was able to leave the trailer at camp and bring my mountain bike to the hill. Simplicity! I used 2 eTrailer U-style hitch stabilizers.... so there was no wiggle in the system. 275648

MT70070 Hitch Riser product delivered as pictured. Purchased this product for two reasons the option of the 6" riser will provide greater ground clearance for my hitch hauler when used alone. Also the option to use the hitch hauler and a bike rack at the same time will be a nice feature in the future. 330304

This product is exactly what I was looking for. My family and I are taking a trip this summer out west, a 5,000 mile round trip. We are pulling a pop-up camper and wanted to bring our bikes as well. This will allow us to bring both! I did not know what to expect with the quality but it has exceeded my expectations. The customer service is second to none. etrailer.com upgraded the shipping so I received it several days before I expected it. They have also followed up with me as to how satisfied I was and if they could help in any way. Overall, I am very impressed with etrailer.com and am very happy with the experience. I will definitely shop here again. 201097

Another great product and experience!! I purchased this dual extender because the end my drive way out to street has a dip. If I put bike rack in lower receiver, bike rack will scrape ground. Putting bike rack in top extender solved my issue on my ‘15 Subaru Legacy!! Also purchased two Anti Rattle Locks. One for receiver and other for bike rack. Another big thumbs up to both items. Thanx ETRAILER!!!! 488240

Love it, just what I was looking for, but wasn't aware of its existence until I spotted it on your website. This will allow us to travel with our small storage trailer yet still carry our bikes on the carrier which will go into the upper port and not have to try and tie them down to the trailer. eTrailer also offered the best price. I'm happy on all accounts. Pictures to follow. 233960

This adapter allowed me to use my traile hitch bike rack while also towing a pop-up camper. It's a solid unit, and works real well. It's not the snuggest fit into the receiver, so tolerances could be improved, but the same could be said about receivers. 282341

Greetings Steve,I was hoping to do the same as you, carry a cargo rack and bike carrier at same time. I know eTrailer recommends NOT to operate this way because of clearance issues and tongue rating being reduced 50 when utilizing this hitch receiver. Of course, I would be concious of weight in cargo carrier as I would utilize it for lighter weight bulky items such as sleeping bags, pads and camp chairs? So.... How has this worked for you, 2 years from your posted review? Regards,Mark Kaim

Quite happy with the quality of this extender. Welds look good and don't protrude into the receivers, nice finish paint. The best thing about the extender is that it just clears the spare tire on my Wrangler JL when seated in my Draw-tite hitch receiver. Now I can carry my kayak (hitchmount-rack v2 carrier) in one receiver and and bicycle carrier in the other. Thanks, e-trailer, for the quick shipping and quality products! 722157

This hitch adapter works great for my Jeep Wrangler. I got this so I can access the rear cargo area with the cargo rack attached and still open the rear Jeep door. The 30” cargo rack was also purchased from etrailer which I load a 30” mower, gas, blower and trimmer. I purchased both about one year ago and highly recommend both items. 714166

  • Hitch Adapter to Raise Height of Cargo Carrier for Batter Ground Clearance
We can help you with a 2-inch hitch adapter that will give you a height rise for better ground clearance with your CargoPod hitch cargo carrier. I suggest the Roadmaster 2-inch High-Low Adapter # RM-048-8. The Roadmaster has a solid steel shank for strength rather than a hollow one like the MaxxTow # MT70070 and it gives you a full 8-inches of rise. This too will reduce your hitch's rated capacity by 50-percent, the same as the MaxxTow, and it also shares the same 400-lb tongue weight...

  • Dual Hitch Adapter for Flat Towing 4,200 lb Vehicle and Carrying Bike Rack
The best solution we have would be to use the dual-hitch adapter part # RM-077-6 which would be the only adapter we offer with enough capacity for flat towing a 4,200 lb vehicle and has upper hitch opening that you can use for a cargo carrier or bike rack. If your tow vehicle is going to be a motorhome you'll need to be sure you are using a bike rack rated for the rougher ride quality at the rear of a motorhome like the Swagman XC part # S64650.

Roadmaster offers a Dual Hitch Receiver, part # RM-077-4 that has a 10,000 lb towing capacity. However, the Receiver is meant for flat towing a vehicle and carrying a hitch mounted accessory, not for towing a trailer. The top receiver has a 400 lb tongue weight capacity, which means that only 400 lbs of downward force can safely be applied to the Dual Hitch Receiver. If you're wanting to tow a trailer and carry a hitch mounted accessory at the same time, I'd recommend using the # D210...

With that being said, the # MT70070 can be used for a bike rack and a cargo basket as you mentioned. The Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR, will work in the upper or lower receiver of the adapter. You should note that the when you use a hitch extender/adapter like this you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half. The D210 is rated for 7,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 750 pounds tongue weight total. So the combined tongue weight of the loaded trailer, hitch mount motorcycle carrier, and dirt bike on it cannot exceed 750 pounds. If the dry weight of the trailer is 700...

  • Can Motorcycle Be Carried In Top Receiver Of MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender
The MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender, part # MT70070 can be used for several different types of cargo but has one pitfall. When used it will reduce the capacity of the trailer hitch by fifty percent, so using this with a motorcycle is probably not an option. If you are towing and need a top receiver, you may want to check out part # D210. The bottom of this mount is a ball mount and the top receiver tube can be used to carry racks. The total tongue weight for this ball mount is 750-lbs.

  • How to Tow Jet Ski Trailer While Carrying Four Bikes on 2012 Honda Pilot
Your best bet would probably be a dual receiver like the # MT70070 you referenced. Keep in mind that using the dual receiver will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50 percent. This means that the tongue weight of the trailer, plus the weight of the bikes and rack could not exceed half the tongue weight figure mentioned on the sticker placed on your hitch. I'd recommend going with a bike rack that offers an angled shank with more ground clearance like the Swagman XP part...

  • Availability of Replacement Shank with Rise for Haulmaster Cargo Carrier
We do not have replacement shanks for Haulmaster cargo carriers, but you could use the MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender, # MT70070. This adapter fits a 2 inch x 2 inch trailer hitch receiver and it provides a 2 inch x 2 inch receiver with a rise of 6-1/4 inches. Please note, only the bottom receiver on this adapter can be used for towing. The upper receiver should only be used for hitch mounted accessories such as bike racks or cargo carriers. Also, it is important to note that using a hitch...

  • Distance from the Center of Hitch Pin Hole Back to End of Shank that Slides In Hitch
Sounds like you are looking for the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on the portion that slides into your hitch to the back of the shank. I went out into our warehouse to grab that measurement for you and found that it is 2-1/2 inches.

  • How to Carry a Hitch Bike Rack and Tow Trailer at the Same Time
The first thing to consider for the MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender # MT70070 is that it will cut the capacities of the hitch it is used on in half. So you will need to determine how much capacity you would need for your bikes/rack and trailer and then compare that to half of the capacity that your vehicle's hitch has. With that being said the product itself has it's own capacities as well. It has a 4,000 max trailer weight and a 400 lb tongue weight capacity. A better option for you...

  • Can the MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender MT70070 Be Used Upside Down
The MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender # MT70070 that you referenced could be used inverted and would give you about 6 inches of drop so it would work well for you. You should note that this adapter will cut the capacity of the hitch it is installed in by 50 percent so you will need to determine if the hitch you have still has the needed capacity when reduced.
