Salesperson Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today, we're taking a look at the Westin HDX line of Grille Guards for trucks. Now this is gonna be a great option to give your truck a tough appearance, but also give it protection from any road hazards or even if you're going offroading from those branches, and especially in the Midwest, deer. Now this is available in two different colors. It's gonna be our black powder coat finish here, and there's also a polished stainless as well so it can match the aesthetic of your vehicle. Now when you are choosing your grille guard for your vehicle, make sure to use the fit guide here at etrailer.com to make sure that you're getting the proper grille guard for your vehicle. Now, regardless of what vehicle you may have, it is going to contour it and be custom fit to your vehicle.
That way, your headlights are still gonna have beams come out and they're not gonna be blocked. And also, this is all a one piece design. And this also contours to the shape of the hood, so it's gonna fit nice and tight, but it's gonna work on your vehicle because it's custom tailored to it. Now, the entire grille guard is one piece, so it's quite large, but also that gives it rigidity. There's no loose pieces that can come off over time.
Even this mesh is welded onto it. So overall, very, very tough. Now the only pieces that won't be part of the one piece design are gonna be the brackets that you're gonna use to bolt it onto your vehicle. And even those are going to be directly bolted into your frame. So I mean, it is extremely solid once you have it bolted up.
Now you'll notice here on the main braces these protrude out the furthest, and it actually has a nice rubber coating on it, so that's gonna allow it to prevent any major scratches or nicks. That way, if you do catch some trees or limbs as you're off on the wilderness or out on the trails, it's gonna keep it looking nice and you're not gonna have gouges out of the front. Now the mesh is really nice because it's gonna protect any large things from hitting your grill, and it's gonna keep it looking good. And another thing is having mesh is gonna be great because you still maintain all that airflow. It's not gonna cause this to get hot, but you still have all of that protection.
This mesh is also attached to these cross member bars here, so it's really solid. It's not gonna have any flex to it, whereas a large area might. Now overall, this is a extremely sturdy design and you can see that throughout all of the bars. Now installation is probably gonna vary from vehicle to vehicle, but this one that we had here, you can knock it out in about an hour or two. And you are gonna probably want an extra person there with you just to kinda get this in place and bolt it in. It's rather kinda heavy and cumbersome, so having someone there to help you is gonna make a big difference. And overall, it's a pretty easy install and I think it's totally worth it. I've totaled the vehicle out by hitting a deer and I know a lot of friends that own farms, and these are great for cattle or anything along those lines that if it prevents your vehicle from getting totally damaged one time, it's totally worth it. And that was a look at the Westin line of HDX Grille Guards..

Great quality, finish is holding up excellent despite abuse. Another bit of information to note: if you have the chrome mesh grill (Denali style) it will require modification and not install per the instructions.
We chose this particular guard because we like the design over other brands for the Tahoe application. This is a 2020 Tahoe Premier RST. Grill guards are popular here in rural Texas even on cars and SUVS because they are known to at least sometimes help minimize vehicle damage during highway impacts. Turkey buzzards, hawks, feral pigs and deer are a constant presence on our rural public roads. We like the way it fits and the tubing is even heavier than the Ranch Hand on our farm trucks. We are very happy with this product.
This the review I posted on TacomaWorld about the grill: “I had purchased a HD Steelcraft grille guard, via Carid, for my 2017 Tacoma, but it was not received in acceptable condition (from manufacturing and shipping). After being refunded I purchased a HDX Westin, grille guard, via etrailer. First, I have to say the Westin was much more difficult in install; luckily I had a buddy with more experience on such projects, more patients and the right tools. The instructions covered several years of Tacomas and were poorly written and illustrated. With that said the packaging from Westin was far superior than that of Steelcraft’s. Westin had every part covered by cardboard cut to fit. Under the cardboard the grille guard had been wrapped in foam. The likelihood of the grille being damaged was very unlikely. On the other hand the Steelcraft only had foam and bubble wrap around it with a thin leather like covering around it all on the outside. Before even unpacking the Steelcraft it could be seen were the corners of the up rights had cut through the wrapping. As mentioned the quality of the grille was poor. There were places where it had not been powder coated, the powder coating on the punch out was sloppy and one of the up rights appeared to have been damaged before it had even been wrapped. The Westin was made of thicker and wider steel. Both grilles were one piece units. The Steelcraft bolted to the frame using vertical bolts, which seemed to me could be sheared off on impact, while the Westin grille bolted on horizontally. Steelcraft looked good the way the upper part of the guard turned inward to follow the upper part of the grille, and the Westin upper part turn outward following the angle of the lower part of the grille. The Westin offered more protection. If you were to hit something the wider spread of the Westin uprights seem like they would protect more. The uprights on the Steelcraft were just powder coated medal, but the uprights on the Westin had a nice rubber strip over them, well suited for pushing another vehicle. The Westin cost more, but worth it. Just make sure you’re very patient and having a pass though socket is a great help since there is very limited room to work under the bumper on the upper bolts. And Steelcraft’s warranty is two years while Westin’s is three years.”
I ordered this grille guard, and it arrived by freight carrier on time. Nice build quality! However it would not fit my particular model of truck. I only figured this out after I took the front of my truck apart. I contacted etrailer for the return and with great difficulty I had to drag the box into my basement to dry out because it rained after I set the box outside thinking I was going to throw it away, I repacked the grille guard, bought straps to secure the thing to the pallet, bought two rolls of packaging tape to repair the box I opened with a razor knife, had to hunt around town for a suitable pallet as the original freight carrier took the pallet with him, enlisted the help of a friend to help me repackage the grille guard, then waited a whole afternoon for the freight carrier to show up for the return because dispatch didn’t call with an estimated arrival time like the original freight carrier did. Now mind you, I’m a 70 year old disabled veteran who’s not supposed to lift more than a jug of milk, but the task at hand was completed. But the build quality of the grille guard was excellent. I would love to add a photo of the completed installation, but I had to send the grille guard back. I do have a photo of it sitting in my garage. Fortunately for me, I have a friends that are willing to help me when I get into a pickle. I have to mention though, that the customer service was excellent, and William deserves to have someone buy him a beer for all of his hard work bird dogging this whole evolution. Thanks William!
