Video Transcript for Westin HDX Grille Guard Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Today on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab, we're going to be installing the Westin HDX Grille Guard with the Punch Plate made out of black powder-coated steel. Part number 57-3615. We're first going to begin here underneath the vehicle, we're going to be starting over here on the driver side, we're going to need to remove a bolt, it's this bolt right here, that runs horizontally through the frame and through the tow hook. On this side there is a nut, we'll go ahead and take that out. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process over here on the passenger side. Next we're going to go ahead and just loosen the bottom bolt for each of the two tow hooks. Next we're going to come under here underneath the hood, we're going to need to remove this plastic cover to gain access down behind the grille. Now there's multiple fasteners that we'll need to remove.

You can use a small flat head screwdriver and then a large flat head screwdriver or a trim panel removal tool that we're using, it'd just come out like that. Next we're going to need to undo a few push fasteners here that holds this plastic liner or air deflector behind the grille here. Let's go ahead and use our trim panel removal tool or a large flat head screwdriver again will work. We'll need to remove this little tab right here that's on the lower portion. Take our tool and slide down in there. Now that we've got the passenger side loosened up we'll come over to the driver side, going to need to just move this top piece here out of the way, just fold it back up in there for not. There is again another little tab down there that we'll need to remove.

Now we're down here in the opening of the bumper, we're going to need to remove that little tab right there, as well as over on the driver side there's one on the same spot. We'll need to gain access to the three bolts right here. There will be three bolts over on the driver side as well. Now we're back underneath the vehicle, we're going to need to remove the three bolts from each side as well as the clips. Now with our three bolts removed, we'll go ahead and remove the plate with the three clips in it. Go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver side.

We're going to go ahead and start over here on the passenger side, we're going to remove the three bolts and the nut plate. Now that we have the nut plate removed, we're ready to install our passenger side bracket, you'll notice that there's a little piece stamped into it. It'll go back in there like this behind the bumper to line up the three holes, to install the new bracket, we'll be using a eight millimeter bolt, a flat washer we'll then go through the bracket, through the bumper bracket, we'll then install another flat washer, a lock washer, and a hex nut. It'll look something like that with the two brackets in between the flat washers. We'll go ahead and insert our bracket. Now we have a hardware, just hand tightened for now, now we'll g ahead and tighten it down. Then we'll torque to the manufacturer specification.

Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver side. Now let's go over some of the hardware that we're going to use to actually mount the HDX Grille Guard to our vehicle. We're using a 12 millimeter hex bolt so it'll come through like that. There'll be a hole drilled through the bumper and through the brackets that we installed earlier and your flat washer will go on, powered by a lock washer and finally the hex nut. Now for these two locations, one here and one here. We'll be reusing the long bolts that we removed from the tow hooks, so it'll go through your tow hook and then the nut will go back on, it'll be the same for both sides. We're going to go ahead and put a little bit of blue painters tape here on this bracket on both sides just to protect the bumper while we're test fitting it and putting it up into place. Now to install your Grille Guard, you're going to want to get a couple extra set of hands to help you put it up into position, it helps if you have two people to help guide the Grille Guard through the tow hook holes. Once we go ahead and line up our holes, we'll go ahead and reinstall the long bolt that we took out of the tow hooks and we'll go ahead and snug everything down. We'll do that for both sides. We'll then need to go ahead and put a level on the top of the Grill Guard to make sure that we're level in the proper position up against the bumper. Now to keep the Grille Guard pull tied up against the bumper, we're going to go ahead and use a safety strap and wrap it around the Grille Guard and secure it to the metal structure underneath the hood. This will help keep the Grille Guard in the correct position, as we drill our holes through the bumper in the brackets. Once we're sure that we're level, we're going to then go ahead and take a paint marker and mark each of our locations where we need to drill. We'll be drilling, starting out with a quarter inch bit and eventually stepping up to a half inch bit. Now with the angle that we're going to be at, we're going to go ahead and put a quarter inch hole on both sides and then we'll remove the front Grille Guard and finish drilling it out to the half inch sized hole, that way we don't have any damage here from the drill trying to get in there and we can put a nice straight hole. We've gone ahead and remove the Grille Guard, now we're going to go ahead and use the step bit process to step up our smaller hole all the way up to a half inch size. Go ahead and make sure that our bolt fits in fine, which it does. It's a good idea to get a couple extra set of hands again to help you set the Grille Guard back into position. Once we go ahead and line up our holes, we'll go ahead and reinstall the long bolt. We'll do that for both sides. We're also going to go ahead and put our safety strap up top to help support the Grille Guard while we put the two bolts and other hardware in that go through the hole on the bumper on each side. We'll make sure that Grille Guards level so then we'll go ahead and reach behind the bumper and we'll install our flat washer, a lock washer and our hex nut. We'll do that for both sides. Now that we have our Grille Guard adjusted, we'll go ahead and tighten down all the hardware. Then we'll torque it to the manufacturer specification. Now that we have all our hardware torqued down, we'll go ahead and remove our safety strap. Now we'll go ahead and reinstall our rubber pieces that are up behind the bumper and the Grille. We'll go ahead and set the top plastic piece in and reinstall the fasteners. With that, that'll conclude our installation of the Westin HDX Grille Guard with Punch Plate at a black powder-coated steel. Part number 57-3615 on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. .

Review from a similar HDX Grille Guard in Grille Guards

This the review I posted on TacomaWorld about the grill: “I had purchased a HD Steelcraft grille guard, via Carid, for my 2017 Tacoma, but it was not received in acceptable condition (from manufacturing and shipping). After being refunded I purchased a HDX Westin, grille guard, via etrailer. First, I have to say the Westin was much more difficult in install; luckily I had a buddy with more experience on such projects, more patients and the right tools. The instructions covered several years of Tacomas and were poorly written and illustrated. With that said the packaging from Westin was far superior than that of Steelcraft’s. Westin had every part covered by cardboard cut to fit. Under the cardboard the grille guard had been wrapped in foam. The likelihood of the grille being damaged was very unlikely. On the other hand the Steelcraft only had foam and bubble wrap around it with a thin leather like covering around it all on the outside. Before even unpacking the Steelcraft it could be seen were the corners of the up rights had cut through the wrapping. As mentioned the quality of the grille was poor. There were places where it had not been powder coated, the powder coating on the punch out was sloppy and one of the up rights appeared to have been damaged before it had even been wrapped. The Westin was made of thicker and wider steel. Both grilles were one piece units. The Steelcraft bolted to the frame using vertical bolts, which seemed to me could be sheared off on impact, while the Westin grille bolted on horizontally. Steelcraft looked good the way the upper part of the guard turned inward to follow the upper part of the grille, and the Westin upper part turn outward following the angle of the lower part of the grille. The Westin offered more protection. If you were to hit something the wider spread of the Westin uprights seem like they would protect more. The uprights on the Steelcraft were just powder coated medal, but the uprights on the Westin had a nice rubber strip over them, well suited for pushing another vehicle. The Westin cost more, but worth it. Just make sure you’re very patient and having a pass though socket is a great help since there is very limited room to work under the bumper on the upper bolts. And Steelcraft’s warranty is two years while Westin’s is three years.”

We chose this particular guard because we like the design over other brands for the Tahoe application. This is a 2020 Tahoe Premier RST. Grill guards are popular here in rural Texas even on cars and SUVS because they are known to at least sometimes help minimize vehicle damage during highway impacts. Turkey buzzards, hawks, feral pigs and deer are a constant presence on our rural public roads. We like the way it fits and the tubing is even heavier than the Ranch Hand on our farm trucks. We are very happy with this product.

Review from a similar HDX Grille Guard in Grille Guards

I like to think my Westin Grille Guard is the best compared to some of the others I have seen on the road. I have the polished stainless and I do not see one bit of rust or discoloration. I do wish though that the bolts that hold the grille onto the truck were polished stainless or came with caps to cover the zinc oxide bolts that are used for the installation.

Comments
It has been over a year now and my Westin Grille Guard still looks like the day it came out of the box. The truck stays outside 24/7/365 in upper NY state. I bought it to protect my front end against deer hits, but the deer seem to stand at the side of the road admiring how good my guard looks. Now I am thinking about ordering the Westin 6 HID light kit to improve night time driving. I certainly would recommend Westin to anyone looking for aftermarket products.

Great Grill Guard. It was very easy to mount and we added a heavy duty winch. It really changed the look of the truck. Holding up really well with no rock chips or fading still looks brand new!

It has a few chips in the chrome when I received the grille guard. Not sure if it was for the warehouse or shipping. Also there is a little rust starting at one of the welds. Still very happy with the grill guard.

Great quality, finish is holding up excellent despite abuse. Another bit of information to note: if you have the chrome mesh grill (Denali style) it will require modification and not install per the instructions.

Ask the Experts about this Westin Grille Guards

  • Recommended Grille Guard or Front Mounted Hitch Receiver for 2011 Chevy 2500 HD
A brush guard like the Westin HDX Grille Guard # 57-3615 or a bull bar like the Aries # AAB35-4013 will mount in the same location as a front hitch receiver. The two will not be compatible because they mount in the same location so you will need to decide between them because there is not a combination option. If you prefer a front mounted hitch receiver, I recommend the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # C31023 because it is made in the USA.

While we don't have have the exact distance from the front bumper of a truck to the Westin Grille Guard part # 57-3615 I attached a picture that shows the guard installed to show give you an idea. Its sits pretty tight to the bumper. There's also quite a bit of info on this guard in the install video I attached as well.

  • Correct Westin HDX Grille Guard for 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD
It sounds like you ordered the Westin HDX Grille Guard # 57-3615 which fits the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The part you needed is the Westin HDX Grille Guard # 57-2315 which is a fit for the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 3500. If you can confirm that that is the part number you purchased, then I can confirm it will not fit on your 2008 vehicle.
