Video Transcript for Reese Fold-Down Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Ford F-250

Today on our 2009 Ford Super Duty, we'll be installing the Reese Fold Down Gooseneck Trailer Hitch, part number 8339-4448. The fold-down gooseneck hitch will be able to be stored underneath the pickup bed, so it will be out of the way. Then when we need the gooseneck ball, we can simply pull on the ring, and allow the ball to come back up and lock back into place. To begin our install, we'll first go ahead and lower and remove the spare tire and both rear wheels. While it may not be a requirement for this install, it will make our install easier, and give us a lot more working room. Next, we'll need to lower the rear portion of the exhaust.

To lower the exhaust, we'll remove the two bolts that secure the rear hanger, and then remove the rubberized layer from the metal hanger, just behind the rear muffler. Note, this application, the exhaust, is loose between the muffler and the inaudible 00:00:56. We'll actually be able to go ahead and remove it. With the two bolts and the rear hanger removed, we'll go ahead and use a spray lubricant to spray down the rubberized layer and then our pry bar, to remove the rubberized layer from the metal hanger. Once we have the rubberized layer off, we'll go ahead and pull back on the tail pipe section, and remove it from the vehicle. Now with our tailpipe out of the way, we'll need to remove the heat shield that's applied to the bottom of the pickup bed between the hatch handles.

It's only secured to the bed with a glue adhesive, so we can go ahead and just peal it down and out. Once it's removed, we'll set it aside, and it will not be reinstalled. Next, we'll need to install the rear cross rail. To install it, we'll take the crossrail, feeding the passenger side up over the the frame rail towards the front hatch handle, and the driver's side over the frame rail towards the rear hatch handle. Once we have both sides above the hatch handle, we can square it up and push it back toward the rear portion of the hatch handle. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process with the front rail.

With both cross rails in place, we'll now move to the wheel well and install the side brackets. The side bracket will slide up over the studs that come out of the cross rail. They're secured with a inaudible 00:02:25 washer, the teeth of the washer facing the side bracket, and then a 5/8 nut. We'll go ahead and install the fasteners finger tight this time. Next, we'll need to install the 5/8 carriage bolt and spacer block, and secure it with the conkletooth washer and nut.

We'll take the carriage bolt, feed it through the side bracket, then the spacer block, which will get sandwiched between the side bracket and the frame, put it through the manufacturer's pre-drilled hole, and then securing it with the concletooth washer and nut. Once our carriage bolt is in place and secured finger tight, we'll then install the U-bolt. The U-bolt will go around the frame and through the side bracket, securing it with a flat washer, split lock washer, and half-inch nut. Once we have all the hardware in place here on the driver's side, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the passenger's side. Next, we'll need to start tightening down the fasteners, starting with the cross rail to side bracket, first. Making sure the cross rail is flat with the bottom of the pickup bed, we'll go ahead and tighten down the 5/8 hardware, for the front cross rail, only. After we have the front cross rail tightened down, we'll then go ahead and tighten down the side bracket hardware. The u-bolt and 5/8 carriage bolt. Once we have it all tightened down, we can then torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now that our front cross rail and side bracket is secured, we'll use the front cross rail as a template to drill out for our attachment points, going up through the pickup bed. Using the slotted holes in the cross rail as a template, from the furtherest outside corner of the slotted hole, we'll go ahead and drill our 5/8 hole up through the pickup bed. Now we'll move into the pickup bed and use our template to cut out for our hitch. Supplied with the install kit, we'll be our paper template. You can line up the holes that we just drilled, which will be the two front attachment points for the gooseneck head, or you can use the draw tight, steel template, part number 6425. The steel template is a lot easier to use, unlike the paper, which can tear or move around. We'll go ahead and set the template in place, and then take the hardware, going down through the template, and through our pre-drilled hole. This will help hold the template in position. Then I'll go ahead and take a paint marker, and mark out the large section, where we'll need to pre-drill holes to cut out for our gooseneck head. Go ahead and mark the corners first, and then I'll draw lines to connect the dots. Now with everything marked out, we'll go ahead and remove the template and set it aside, and start drilling out the holes. We'll use a pilot bit that's just large enough that we can get our saw blade in the corner, and then make our cutout. Now with all the holes drilled out, we'll go ahead and cut it out. Now with the section cut out, we'll go ahead and test fit the head. With the gooseneck head in place, it has a little wobble to it. Note, there's a gusset on each side of the ball mechanism that may need additional trimming. We'll go ahead and raise it just enough that we can mark the area with a paint stick, and then cut it out. Now with the areas trimmed as necessary, we'll go ahead and put our gooseneck head back in position, and install the 5/8 carriage bolt going down through the head, through the pickup bed, through the front rail. Now we're ready to put our gooseneck head back in position. With a good fit, we can go ahead and install the front pull-down hardware. Sandwiching the U-shaped spacer between the hitch and the pickup bed, will help to prevent from smashing the corrigation of the pickup bed. We'll fit the U-shaped spacer around the carriage bolt, and then drop it in position. Underneath, we'll install the split lock washer, concletooth washer and nut, the teeth of the concletooth washer, facing the cross rail. We'll install both fasteners finger tight. With our front hardware in place, it will help hold the hitch in position, while we use it as a template to drill out the remaining attachment points and chain hold down. Now with both rear attachment points drilled out, we can go ahead and put in our carriage bolt and u-shaped spacers. Next, we'll drill out for the U-bolts for the chain hold-down. Again, we'll use the hitch as a template to drill down through the pickup bed, lining up with the front rail. Once we have the holes drilled out, we'll go ahead and drop the U-bolts in place. Now with our hitch hardware in position, we'll go ahead and move underneath the vehicle, and install our fasteners. For the rear to attatchment points, it will be concle tooth washer and nut. For our chain hold-down, we'll install a flat washer, spring, a second flat washer, and then use the lock nut. With all our hardware in place, we're ready to go ahead and tighten it down. When you tighten down the U-bolt for your chain hold-down, below the nut should be three threads, as per the instructions. Then we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all the hitch head fasteners secured and torqued to specification, we'll move back to the wheel well, where we'll tighten down the rear rail to side bracket, and then torque to specifications. With our hitch secured and torqued to specifications, we're now ready to reinstall the exhaust. For this application, the exhaust hangers will need to be adjusted, to lower the exhaust to make clearance for the hitch. Starting with the forward hanger, we'll need to remove it. To remove it, there are two nuts on top of the cross brace. Once we remove the nuts, we'll allow the hanger to fall down. Then we'll take the two 3/8 blocks provided with our install kit, put them on the studs and reinstall them, sandwiching the blocks between the hanger and the cross brace. Now we'll go ahead and put the exhaust in position. Here for the rear hanger, we'll reuse the manufacturer's hardware by removing the clip nut from the frame and installing it on the new angle bracket. We can then go ahead and reinstall the manufacturer's hardware to secure the angle bracket to the exhaust hanger. We'll take the new bolt, flat washer, and nut, and take the angle bracket, securing it to the manufacturer's attachment point here in the frame, taking the bolt going through the bracket, through the frame, and securing it with a flat washer and nut. With all the hardware in place, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Now with our hitch installed and secured, and our exhaust reinstalled, we'll go ahead and reinstall the rear wheels, tighten them down, and torque to specifications. Let's go over a quick operation of the gooseneck hitch. With the hitch ball in the stored position, go ahead and simply pull on the ring that will release the ball, allow it to come up, and then push the flat back down to secure the ball in the upright position. Then once we're finished using the ball, we'll pull the ring back up, allow the ball to fall down, and then resecure the flat, putting our ball back into the stored position. That will complete our install of the Reese Fold-down Gooseneck hitch, part number 8339-4448, on our 2009 Ford Super Duty. .

2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty

The kit that I received for 2015 ford F-250 was a poor fit. The u-bolt for the passenger side would not fit with out modification. This just happens too be where the shock and shock mount is located. With time and a lot of bending of the bolt, I was able to make it work. Time wasted was two and half hours. Love the hitch great design works really good. 212032

  • The Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter part # CAB-C5G for long beds or part # CAB-C5GX1216 for short beds is a great adapter that is very popular. It has a cushion interior which works to reduce vibrations that in turn decreases wear and tear of the trailer/vehicle. However, there are other options out there which may be better for you. If you can tell me what gooseneck hitch you have in your 2000 Ford F-350 I would be able to info you as to what these options are....

  • Will the Hi-Rise # 9480 Mount to a Draw-Tite # 8339 Gooseneck Hitch on a 2008 Ford F-350
  • Since you have the Fold-Down Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # 8339-4448 there actually isn't a way for the Hi-Rise # 9480 to secure to the gooseneck hitch since it sits down in the coupler section of the gooseneck hitch. To use the Hi-Rise you will need to swap out the top part of your gooseneck hitch with part # 9460 which allows you to remove the hitch ball. If you went this route then you also need replacement mounting hardware # 58320 since the hardware is only meant to be torqued once. We...
