Video Transcript for Curt Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Installation - 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on our 2006 Dodge Ram pickup. We'll be installing the Curt Quick Goose 2, Gooseneck hitch, part number C64-659. Our first step, we've gone and ahead and lowered remove the rear exhaust, spare tire and wheels. This would give us more access and working room to install our hitch. Now, we're ready to begin installation. Our first step will be marking and drilling out pilot hole and then our large hole for the gooseneck ball to come through the bed. We'll start by following the manufacturers instructions and following the measurements given then we'll find the center point between the two wheels wells.

Now, using a smaller bit, we'll go ahead and drill a pile hole. This pile hole should be in the middle of the pick up bed or center of the drive shaft and four or five inches in front of the center line of the axle underneath the vehicle.Next, we'll take our larger hole saw bit and go ahead and cut out the larger hole that the gooseneck ball will come up through. Now at that done, we're ready to go ahead and get underneath the vehicle and start installing the base rails. For this application, we'll need to remove the wheel liners first. We'll remove the fasteners here.

Now, with the wheel liner removed we'll go ahead and take the front base rail with the threaded holes pre-installed by the manufacturer facing up and slide it into position. This will sit up against the pick up bed hot channel. We're ready to install the rear base rail. This is a slightly larger and in a v-configuration. We'll need to notch out some of the metal of the bed body lift. Locating a pre-drilled hole, we'll cut approximately two inches of metal from the center of the pre-drilled hole to the top edge of the hole.

Using my paint market, I'm going ahead and draw some line. Using my cutting wheel, I'll go ahead and cut this material out. We're ready to go ahead and slide the rear base rail into position. Nothing that the notches on the downside leg of the rear base rail will be sitting on the frame. Our next step is to install the center section or head unit of the new gooseneck hitch. We'll be installing it using two sets of hardware, one set will be a half-inch bolt, split lock washer and flat washer going through the center section and into the forward base rail in the pre-threaded holes and the second set of hardware will be half inch carriage bolt with the flange nut.

This will go through the rear base rail into the new center section. It's a good idea to get extra set of hands to help you hold the center section while you install your fastening. We'll install each of these fasteners finger tight at this time. Now, with that done, we're ready to install the side plates. Before we install the side plate for the new base rail kit, we'll need to remove the parking breaking bracket which will be relocated and re-secured later. Now, with the fastener and bracket out of the way, we're ready to go ahead and install the side plate. The top hole of our side plate will thread directly into the forward bar using the same fasteners as we did before for the center section. The rear attachment point into the rear bar, we'll simply use a half-inch bolt and flat washer along with a half-inch flange nut. We'll install these fasteners finger tight at this time also.On the driver side, it'll be necessary to relocate the manufacturer's wiring in order to install the side section and fasteners.Next, we'll need to install the u-bolts for the side plate. These will also get installed from inside to outside and be careful not to pinch off any of the manufacturers wiring or break lines between the u-bolt and the frame. Now with our u-bolt in place, we'll go ahead and secure finger tight with half-inch split lock washers and nuts.Next, we'll need to install the seven sixteenth carriage bolt which will be the new attachment point for our parking break bracket. It will go into the side plate from inside to outside. The rear attachment for our side plate will be a five eights bolt and flat washer going all the way through the height of the frame and the top being secured with a five eights flange nut.Next, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the opposite side. Now, with all our fasteners installed we'll go ahead and tighten it to our specifications. Starting with the center head units of the rails then the side brackets to the base rails. Tighten and torque in each fastener to specifications as indicated in the instructions. We'll simply need to go ahead and reinstall the parking break bracket then the manufacturers wiring. We're ready to go ahead and install the u-bolt. To do this, we use the hinges of the template and use a smaller bit to drill a pile hole up from underneath the bed. Now, we've got our pilot hole drilled out, we'll go ahead and use the larger bit to open up the hole so we can install the u-bolts.Now, with the u-bolts installed, we'll need to install the fastening hardware. This will be four flat washers, two springs and two lock nuts. We'll install the flat washer first then the spring and then the bottom washer then we'll secure it with the nut. Go ahead and repeat this for the other leg of the same u-bolt. Tighten the nut down to a three thread showing past the nut. Now, we'll go ahead and repeat the same procedure on the opposite side. Now, with our u-bolts installed, we'll need to install the handles. To install the handles, we'll need to trip away some material so that we can access the handle from the driver side wheel well. Starting with the plastic inner-wheel well and then the metal body life to make room for our handles.Using the red handle as a template, it gives us an idea how much the wheel well we'll have to cut out. With our line marked, we'll go ahead and use our dremel or rotary tool to cut it out. Next, we'll go ahead and cut out a center section of the body life to make room for the handles. Using our paint marker, we'll mark out the area and then we'll use our cut off wheel to remove this section. Now, with that done, we're ready to go ahead and install the handles. Starting with our red handle, we'll be installing it using spring and bolt and nut to secure the handle. We'll feed the handle through the head unit turning it so that the notch will slide pass the cut out while installing the spring in between the two handle guides. We'll line it up with the chocker on the head unit then install the bolt and nut. We'll go ahead and leave it finger tight this time until we have both fasteners for the handles installed. We'll go ahead and repeat the same procedure for the ball handle. Feed the handle in through the guides, line it up with the mechanism and then install the bolt and lock nut. We can go ahead and tighten down the hardware. Now with all our hardware tighten down, this will complete the install to operate the gooseneck, we'll utilize both handles. The red handle will be the chocker or lock for the ball and the black handle will raise or lower the ball into position. We're currently in the lowered locked position. To unlock the handle we'll simply turn the red handle to the unlock position and allow the black handle to recess towards the center of the vehicle allowing the ball to come up into position then we'll turn the red handle again relocking the ball in the up right position.Once we're completed using that gooseneck, we'll go ahead and unlock the ball once again at the chocker, pull back on the black handle recessing the ball and then push our lock back in or chocker back in and relock the red handle. This is the basic use for our Curt gooseneck set up.That will complete the install of our Gooseneck part number c64-659 on our 2006 Dodge Ram pickup. .

Review from a similar Curt Quick Goose 2 in Gooseneck

Nice solid unit that will definitely last a lifetime but even new this unit is not very user friendly. I have it installed on a 99 c/k3500. Installation of the unit was easy but the 2 levers for raising and locking the ball are not well designed. if you pull the left handle to far, the ball gets stuck in the down position and you have to crawl under the truck and push it back up. The right handle is supposed to somehow lock it into position but I have yet to figure out a reliable system for doing that. I had to shorten both handles to clear the rear tire and with the tire blocking the handles it is difficult and dirty to operate them and usually you smash your hands when the levers do finally go into place. The rubber cap is worthless and generally ends up bouncing out. On my 2nd truck, I went with the style you put the ball in by hand and it is a much easier unit to operate. 681232

Very easy to install, I did it by myself in under 2Hrs. Works great you just have to make sure you keep it clean which sometimes isn't easy if you haul any materials in your truck. Mine got stuck pretty good after hauling torn up concrete, the dust and small pieces jammed it up so the ball would not pop up. 316419

Shipped on time, installed easily, tows excellent! I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. For fifty dollars more I can lift or lower the ball without climbing in and out of the bed, win! 417079

Review from a similar Curt Quick Goose 2 in Gooseneck

Get a turnover ball and don’t be the sucker I ended up. I laugh every time I think of the convenience I thought I was getting by not having to climb in the back of the truck. I don’t know if mine is defective or if this device is actually a workout program mixed with an anger management exercise in disguise. I’ve been using it for a year now, but within a month I developed a strategy for getting my trailer hooked up. First I climb into the back of the truck to cut the duct tape off I’ve used to attach the worthless rubber cap which falls off every chance it gets, filling the mechanism with whatever you have in your truck. If you ever plan to do anything with the bed of the truck besides pulling your gooseneck, haul hay, a four wheeler, anything dirty it will definitely jam your ball. After the tape is off I fight the first lever, I yank, turn, pull, twist, bang, swivel, dance this lever into the exact position. I climb under the truck and cover myself with wheel grease and scum getting the thing to unlock. Then the second lever, to lift and drop the ball. Repeat the steps of the first lever with less twisting, but add climbing into the bed with a hammer, banging the ball, climbing underneath, banging the lift arm, banging underneath, shaking, bouncing and sweet talking this POS into the upward position. Stop to spit curse and wipe the sweat out of your eyes and clean any wounds you got banging your knuckles. Now repeat the first lever steps AGAIN, including going under, going up, and under and in the wheel well so far you find whatever you ran over the other day that made you say “hmm” all over the front of your shirt. Repeat in opposite order when you want to put it down. I’m so embarrassed about this hunk of junk that I stop on the side of the road a half hour before I get to anything I’ve got to pick up just so no one has to see me cursing, crying and throwing a tantrum getting this thing in place. Please don’t buy this item, you don’t deserve this kind of punishment. 707515
