Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Hitch Operation

Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Operation

The Curt Double Lock underbed gooseneck trailer hitch provides a sturdy, secure connection for towing your gooseneck trailer and also allows for a clean, unobtrusive look for your truck bed when you aren't towing. To tow, simply pull the included handle out to unlock the hitch. Then insert the chrome-plated hitch ball into the ball hole. You may need to rotate the ball to line it up with the dual locking pins. When the ball drops into place, rotate the handle counterclockwise until the locking pins snap into position. Because there are 2 locking pins instead of 1, you get extra security for your towing setup.

Get full bed access when you're not towing. Just remove the ball, flip it upside down, drop it back into the ball hole of the hitch, and use the handle to lock the ball in place. A rubber cover is included with the Double Lock. When the ball is stowed upside down in the hitch, place this cover over the ball hole to keep out dirt and grime and create a clean look for your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Curt Double Lock Flip and Store Underbed Gooseneck Hitch Installation - 2013 Ford F-150

Speaker 1: Today on our 2013 Ford F150 we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt Double Lock. This is a flip and store underbed style gooseneck hitch with installation kit. Part number is C60721. Now, here's the portion of the gooseneck that's going to remain below the bed. You've got the whole center section here they call that the head. You're going to have your cross rails, those go over and connect to frame brackets and that keeps everything nice, solid, and locked in place. Now, all of your cross rails, your head, and the side plates are a heavy duty black powder coat steel so those should resist corrosion very well.

It has a dual pin set up for added security. Typically, you're just going to have a one pin that goes through the ball, this one has two. You can see as we pull the release handle, pull that back and rotate it, you'll be able to slide your ball down and in. Then when you release it, those two pins will go through the ball. It's also going to keep it from turning, moving, or rattling. Now, as part of the custom installation kit you've got your custom side brackets here.

These are going to bolt directly to the frame of the truck with no drilling required. We've got the connection points here for our end rails, the connection points there to the frame. It's going to keep everything nice and solid. Now, to operate your gooseneck we've got our handle, it's going to be here on the driver's side. Just want to pull out and rotate it to lock it in the open position.

That allows you to switch your ball up or down, whichever direction you need it. Then just by rotating it counterclockwise, that allows those dual pins to go back in, engage the ball and hold it in place. Now, when not in use, this is what your gooseneck's going to look like. This is one of the greatest advantages to the underbed style gooseneck mounts, is that you're not going to be taking up any space in the bed or you're not going to have that big ball that's sticking up here in the middle, preventing you from sliding items in and out. See our safety chain connections points here are spring loaded. It's a good area in there for you to connect even the largest size chains, and when not in use those springs hold it down against the bed.

That's going to prevent any rattling or any noise. Now, when you're ready to use your hitch, simply want to take the protective cover off, that's going to keep any dirt and grime and stuff from getting down inside. You'll pull the handle on the side to release the dual pins. Then you simply lift up on the ball. As you can see, this is a CNC machine, full one piece ball so it's going to give us great strength. We've got the little indentions here on the side, those are going to line up with the alignment tab, make sure that when we drop it in we've got it in line for our pins to come through. Now you can release the handle, let the pins come through, and that'll have our ball locked into position and ready for use. Now, this is 2-5/16 of an inch in diameter. Fully chrome coated, so it's going to offer some good corrosion resistance. Also here around the top, you can see Curt's put a chrome ring. You can adjust that slightly to get your hole to line up properly, but as you can see, it offers a good fit all the way around that 4 inch hole. Now, the gooseneck setup is going to have a total weight capacity of 7,500 pounds as far as the vertical load limit, or the downward force that we can put on the ball. It gives us a 30,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. That'd be the total weight of your trailer and anything that you might have loaded up in it. The real limiting factor of this setup is going to be the truck. It's much stronger than what the truck's capable of towing, so just check your owner's manual on your Ford, see what it's rated for and don't exceed that. Now, unlike other manufacturers, instead of just using one 5/8 diameter pin to secure our gooseneck in place, Curt uses two. It has an upper and a lower pin that's going to give us extra stability when we have our ball in place. Here you can see the upper, and it might be a little bit tougher to see, but below you hae the second pin. Something else I like about the Curt setup is the handle that we have to grab ahold of the ball. As you can see, it's big enough, you can get a finger underneath it and really pull up. It's wide enough, it's not going to dig into your finger too much. Now to begin our installation, we need to measure, mark, and drill out the hole that we're going to need for the gooseneck head to come up from the bed. You want to check your instructions for the measurement. This is going to work best on a sprayed in bed liner or on just a regular painted bed. If you have a drop in bed liner it can be a little bit more difficult. One thing to keep in mind with a spray in bed liner, whatever additional bed liner thickness that there is, you want to also add that to this measurement. We'll make our mark there, that's for the length from the back. Now we want to measure from each wheel well in to find the dead center of this area. Measure a couple times just to make sure everything's appropriate. Now we're going to use a center punch, and we want to mark the middle of that location there and that'll act as a guide for our drill bit. Now, we're going to be using a 4 inch hole saw. You could use a step bit, you could drill out a smaller hole and then enlarge it with a jigsaw, kind of whatever you want to do here. Once we've got that hole drilled out we'll use a file or a carbide bit, just want to clean up any sharp edges or any burrs that we might have. Now it'll be a good idea just to clean up any of the shavings that you created, but I also like to touch up this bare edge with a little bit of spray paint. Now we'll get our rails put in place. Our front rail is going to be the pretty plain rail. It's just an angle iron, a round hole at each end, and then we've got four square holes in the middle. As we place this in, we want the point to be facing up and we want those holes to be facing towards the back of the truck. Just need to slide it over this frame rail, all the way over so it rests on the other one. We'll push that forward, we can do the same thing for our rear rail. Now, the rear rail has a cutout on it. It's also going to have a stud that sticks off of each end. As we place this in, we want the side that has the holes in it to be facing forward. Now, to help out with our installation we've already removed the spare tire as you can see here, but we're also going to pull down the heat shield. It's just going to allow you to see a little bit better what we're doing. If you decide to take yours down, you want to remove the 13 millimeter headed bolt here and also here on the back side. Now we can get our center section put up in position. You see the four oblong holes here, we're going to use this as the front. That means your hole is going to be off center to the back just a little bit. The back side, same situation, four oblong holes. We want to get our rails rotated up into position and our carriage bolts, just going to bring those through. I'm going to attach the center section to the front, then we'll pivot it up and attach it to the back. Going to lift that up. Line up our bolts there, get a couple started. Now we'll align the head with the hole and we'll bring our rear rail up and start placing our bolts through there and put flange nuts on them. Now we'll take a look at the rails. We want to make sure we've got the same distance here on both sides of the truck. We also want to make sure that our center section is centered in the hole that we created. We're going to put in our side plates. These tabs that stick out should be forward and they should be facing outside of the frame, to give you some reference on which one goes on which side. We'll slide that in. From the stud here we'll add a flange nut. On the front side we'll place one of the hex bolts with the flat washer through. Then go through the side plate, through our rail, then we'll just hand tight that one down for now.Now we'll get our U bolt put in place. That's going to go in these two holes here. We need to slide this in. We need to rotate it so that it comes back out of this hole. Let's put a flange nut on the bottom side here. Then we've got our bushing. You can see it's got a flat spot, that's going to fit right into the flat spot that's on the rail. Once we've got that seated we'll put our other flange nut on. Now we're going to go to the passenger side and we want to do that exact same thing, of course, just semi-reversed.Now with all of our hardware in place, we need to go through our torquing procedure. We're going to start with our U bolts. We're going to torque them down to the specifications listed in our instructions. First we'll get them snugged down. Now we'll move on and snug down the eight bolts that hold the head to the rails, torque those down properly. Then the next fasteners we'll take care are going to be the ones that connect the side plates to the rails. Those will be the last ones we torque down, just want to snug them up and get them torqued. Now we're going to take a second and we want to drill a pilot hole up from the bottom through the bottom of the bed for our safety chain connection points. We can see there's two sets of oblong holes. Since it's in the bottom of the bed corrugation, we're going to use the outside set here. Get our pilot holes drilled up through. Once we're done with that, we'll bring our 1/2 inch bit down from up top. Once we've got our holes created, want to pass our U bolts down through and just make sure you got good range of movement. If not, you'll enlarge those holes slightly to ensure that you do.Now on each U bolt leg we're going to place on a flat washer, one of the provided springs, a second flat washer, and our nylon lock nut. Once we have all four of these in place we're going to tighten them down so that the end of the U bolt's flush with the top of the bolt there. Now we'll get our handle and locking pin in position. We'll first slide through the pin. You'll see it's going to engage fully through. Now we'll grab our handle. This end, the hole there is going to line up with the hole that's in the pin. We'll bring this in from outside of our frame rail. See, it's going to pass the two holes through there and there. We'll slide on our spring. Then we'll place in our bolt. Take our nylon lock nut and thread it on there. Then we'll check our pole length. Think that that's going to work out fine. If this comes out too far you can add a couple of flat washers right here that are also provided. Now, for the head of the bolt you want to use a 7 millimeter socket, and for the nut side we're going to use a 8 millimeter wrench. We just need to tighten this down so it's snug. All right, now if you removed them, you'll want to get your heat shield and spare tire back in position. That's going to complete our installation of the Curt Double Lock, part number C60721 on our 2013 Ford F150.

Excellent product at a great price. I was a little worried about the quality of Curt hitches because of the big difference in price from other hitches. I have now installed a Curt gooseneck hitch and another higher priced brand and the fit, finish and quality of materials is the same in my opinion. 509530

Review from a similar Curt Double Lock in Gooseneck

When we ordered the hitch we paid extra for quick ship and received the hitch on time, as we were in a pinch to get it installed and operational. My son and I installed it without any complication. Instructions were surprisingly easy to follow. Hitch showed up intact, well packaged and with all related hardware and in great condition. etrailer offered the best price we could find, were very friendly, informative and helpful. The women we dealt with went above and beyond any other vendor we use to make sure we had the right parts, shipped the right way and at the right time! Excellent customer service, will always check with them first when ordering anything we need in the future. 505896

Great product and perfect fit for my 2005 GMC Sierra duramax. I just purchased a Montana fifth wheel and wanted to still be able to use the bed of the truck without taking a heavy hitch in and out and breaking my back. The hitch arrived really fast and the boxes were in pretty good shape and I was only missing one washer from a torn parts bag. I was able to install the hitch that weekend with help of the directions and how to YouTube video. The only issue I had was that the video stated the crossbar with the notch went to the rear while the directions showed it going to the front. It definitely goes to the front and was pretty obvious when installing it. I didn’t have any real issues with the install and it looks great and hides away nicely leaving a clean flat bed. I look forward to hauling my fifth wheel real soon. 497865

No issues with this hitch after one year. I don't have a need to hide the ball so I can't comment on how easy that part works. (I thought I would need to hide the ball - but, have found that I just don't use the truck bed that way very often!) 446178

Curt and Pollak make a great product and etrailer is a great site, I come here for all my towing needs now! My only issue is that the instructions for the gooseneck hitch were kind of vague. I got it on in about 3 1/2 hours taking my time and making sure it was right. Other than that I would purchase a Curt and Pollak product again! 454991

This company helped me from step 1 on deciding which gooseneck hitch to go with, installation videos and checking up on after receipt of the hitch. The hitch was super easy to install with the template for drilling the hole that was included, this hitch by far exceeds the little extra touches you get with a more expensive hitch, the pull handle is a heavier gage, the double locking pin, and even the dust cover to keep out the dirt and gravel from the turnover ball! Great product 378880

I ordered my hitch on Tuesday afternoon and received it Friday morning. Saturday morning I put it took about 3 1/2 hours to install which included 45 minutes to get the lock off the spare tire. Struggled to get the bolts in the frame but other than that everything went smooth. It looks real nice in the bed of my 2500 chev. Now to finish lunch and hook onto the trailer and go. 478582

Very satisfied with hitch . Installation was Easy , except drill template was made improperly and extra measurements were required prior to drilling 4" ball hole. Also would suggest that Curt should clean paint out of all threaded holes prior to shipping. 269832

It’s been one year since I installed this gooseneck hitch on my truck. The video was straightforward and I was able to install an afternoon. Since then I have towed my horse trailer several thousand miles in all sorts of climates and conditions with absolutely no issues. Only suggestion , Is make sure every six months or so you lube the height of all lever and mechanism to prevent sticking. I installed this hitch for a fraction of what all the local trailer and towing stores quoted me. 546020

After one year the hitch is still working great. I tow my tractor all the time with no issues.

I had to leave town just before this was delivered, but my daughter told me that the shipper brought it into the house for her, as it was very heavy, and shipped in one package. I'll be gone for a month, so I'm anxious to get it installed when I return home. After watching the videos on etrailer's website, I'm confident it will be straightforward if not easy. 274348

Since installing the hitch Ive used it for up to a 24 horse trailer, full of horses. No problems, the ball still slides in and out easily hasnt rusted in place, the release lever still functions great, all systems go!

Hitch seems to be working properly. The instructions were a bit hrs to follow, but with the use of a hammer and a little know how everything fit. I have a plastic bedliner, so instead of guessing where to drill the 4" hole, I just removed the liner to drill hole, then replaced it before installing the hitch. 2012 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 6.5 ft. The box was beat up very bad but nothing was missing, just too heavy for UPS to carry. The installation was a little different for me than the videos I watched, on my 2003 Silverado 1500HD the right shock and gas tank was too close to truck bed and it made putting the under bed plate in very difficult, I should have just taken truck bed off. The cross bars that the under bed plate bolted in was very hard to get bolts into even after I cleaned the bolt hole threads out and sprayed WD40 into the bolt holes. It took me by myself almost 5 hours to get it installed but I got it in last Saturday, I will never do this again. 514983

Curt Double Lock Flip and store Gooseneck Hitch was a good buy, installation went well, just as the video showed. The only problem was the exhaust pipe clearance. Tweaked the spacer and used only the back half of it and got the clearance I needed 522953

Installation was fairly painless. I have been pulling with this hitch fairly frequently and normally for long distances when I do. I have never had issues with fasteners coming loose or he ball getting loose in the socket. The only issue I have had with the hitch was the ball getting stuck in the stored position. 468238

Thank you for your review. I have contacted Curt about the gooseneck ball getting stuck in the stored posistion. They suggest to go underneath the truck and to clean and apply liberal amounts of lubricant on all of the moving parts of the underside of the gooseneck hitch. Try to pull the lever to free the ball. If the ball comes free make sure to clean the cavity where the ball is stored. This cavity can become full of dirt and grime which can cause the ball to become stuck. If you are still not able to free the ball, then you can also unscrew the chrome ring from the top of the hitch and remove the ball. Then make sure the cavity and the ball is properly lubricated with a grease such as part #L10337 before reinstalling the ball.

Might be a good hitch for a single rear wheel gasoline truck but is a nightmare to install on a DRW diesel truck. C-brackets are a pain with fuel tank. No room to get tools in etc.. Lessons learned............. Drop the spare, remove the rear wheels, remove the exhaust from the cab back. The instructions and the video both state that you don't have to any of the above. Yeah right. He also demonstrates removing the ball by turning the release handle to the left to lock it while you remove and replace the ball........... Handle is bolted in rigid and does NOT rotate. I don't see any way to lock it open either. (tarp strap to the fender maybe?) You can put the ball in pretty easily but removing will require 2 people as near as I can figure. Pre sale looked pretty good but........... etrailer on the other hand is still a great company to purchase all trailer needs from. Fast prepaid shipping etc.. Will continue to purchase from etrailer but not too sure about this particular brand of hitch. 572328
