Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter

This unique coupler lets you tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch. It is air ride equipped to ensure that less stress is put on your trailer's frame than is typical with traditional king pin adapters. Simply replace your trailer's existing pin box with the Goose Box and you'll be ready to go.

Eliminate Chucking and Jarring

The Goose Box is designed to absorb road shock for a smooth, stable ride. The internal air bag can be adjusted to give you just the right amount of support, so you will lose the bounce but avoid the stiff, rigid ride that occurs when towing with an overinflated air bag. Also included in the Goose Box are dual shock absorbers, which extend the life of the air bag by ensuring that compression occurs in a controlled fashion.

Cutaway Diagram of Reese Products Goose Box
  1. The air bag can be adjusted to provide a smooth ride for both your truck and trailer. Because it is fully enclosed, it's protected from UV exposure and shielded from road hazards.
  2. Dual shock absorbers help to reduce bounce and relieve stress on your trailer frame.
  3. The integrated pivot tube allows the Goose Box to move fore and aft, minimizing chucking.
  4. The gooseneck coupler attaches to the 2-5/16 inch ball on your gooseneck trailer hitch.

This Goosebox is heavy but I was able to get it installed by myself with help from my wife while tightening the bolt. When UPS freight delivered this, the driver was kind enough to load it directly into my truck so I did not have to lift it up. Using my truck I was able to back it into position where it went in effortlessly. I first took the zirk fitting out so I did not break it. The Goosebox was shored up using 2X4 pieces and then strapped in place, so it was in position while backing it up to the fifth wheel. This is a well made and stout pinbox replacement. The one issue I do have is that the air inflation gauge is very hard to see. Basically it is a black bar inside a black hole. The next time I am hooked up, I intend to put some white or other bright colored paint on the bar for easier viewing. No more lifting the heavy hitch to of the bed to use the truck. As always etrailer is hard to beat, fast shipping, expert advice, great prices.

After a year now, I can say this was a great move for me. It functions flawlessly with no chucking or clanking of any kind. Just be sure not to over inflate.

Overall a great upgrade, but not perfect.
Happy to have gone this way from the previous 5th wheel hitch setup.

* Having nothing in the bed of the truck, except when towing.
* There is more room for a larger bed chest without the 5th wheel hitch (replaced a B&W Companion slider).
* Air bag system seems less jarring on the frame of the 5th wheel than the B& W Companion / Lippert Rotaflex.
* Seems to have reduced further what little "chucking" there was with the Companion/Rota-Flex setup.

* Lining up to hitch is a PITA. Reese should really rethink this.
* Towing is not as confidence inspiring. The trailer feels like it wallows in rough undulating turns in comparison to the 5th wheel connection.
* Sits much lower than the 5th wheel pin box, so at level RV sites the bottom of the hitch is lower than the truck bed. That affects the length of RV site needed as the truck can't back under the trailer to park.
* The pinbox structure requires more room in the bed, limiting what can be placed on the sides & rear of the bed.

To help with hitching, I'm going to make a magnetic "sighting" system that can be seen through the rear window. something that can be tossed in the bed chest when not in use. Currently I'm using the bed camera (in the CHMSL) along with a camera that I set on the wheel well, and that is marginal at best. It still takes multiple attempts because of the limited tolerance. Once the bed chest is installed the camera will be pretty ineffective.

IF you have a gooseneck ball and a fifth wheel RV, then this is the perfect match for your rig! The Reese Goosebox changes everything! Easier hook up and unhooking. Smooth ride and easy installation. etrailer has plenty of videos for review and installation, plus you can call them and ask about it if you have any questions. I have had it for a year now and just installed it on its second camper and I would have it any other way! It is exactly what you need!

Love it!

I like the Goosebox was easy to install. Took me and wife about 2 hours but I am in my mid 70’s. I used my tractor and loader which took a lot of work out of it.

I installed the reese 20k goosebox yesterday by myself except for a small amount of help from my wife. Install was easy. Haven't had time to try it out yet.

I love the reese goosebox. It may be a little harder to hook up with, but there are ways to help with that 1 is utube. It makes for a much nicer and smother ride compared to the 5th wheel hitch.

I think the Goose Box is a great product. However, I searched on the eTrailer site and found that someone with the same make/model of RV and was guided to a particular Goose Box. I contacted etrailer, provided them with the year, make and model of RV - and asked to confirm if this was the same pinbox and if this particular model of Goose Box was correct and would fit my RV. trailer confirmed, so I placed the order. Unfortunately, in my model year, the pinbox changed and the Goose Box did not fit. etrailer did offer to return the product if I paid approximately $XXX in shipping. Coupled with etrailer sending me the wrong chains - I will look elsewhere for all my future RV needs.

Pin boxes can be different on an RV even if they made by the same manufacturer. The easiest way to determine which pin box you have is by looking on the pin box. There should be a sticker that gives the pin box manufacturers name and the model number. If you cannot find the sticker or it is not legible, another way to find the pin box information is to contact the trailer manufacturer directly. They can determine which OEM pin box was installed on your trailer using the trailers serial number. The final way to determine which pin box you have is by taking a few measurements. I have attached an FAQ article on measuring your pin box as well as a photo showing the measurements you will want to take. Based on the various measurements, we can determine which pin box you have and which replacement air ride pin box will work for you.

This really was a game changer from my conventional hitch set up. No more lifting a heavy hitch receiver out of my truck bed when not in use, and the hitching process is a breeze. No binding or hitch slide issues. The ride was much smoother with the air system. I installed it myself with the help of one other person and didn't have any problems. Have about 6k miles on it now and it's awesome. Worth the money.

I have completed the installation of the Reese Gooseneck pin Box 20K on my 2019 Columbus 1492 366RL. The installation went well for 2 people. The installation was done as suggested in the instructions, one step below the original fifth wheel hitch.
That actually proved to be too high for my 2019 GMC DenaliHD 4x4 DRW so I moved the hitch to the same position as the original equipment and the height works much better. I was able to unbolt and reset the position of the hitch by myself using the truck bed as a "work bench" and raising and lowering the RV to align the holes. Haven't towed it yet but will soon and provide more info. As you can tell by the photos, the safety chain installation was very easy.

The Reese Gooseneck is awesome. Smoother pull and less bouncing. I recommend anyone with a fifth wheel to convert to a reese gooseneck.

After being a little hesitant on the purchasing of this item, I did research and pulled the trigger. I am so glad that I did. I love the fact that I could remove the rails in my truck from my 5th wheel. Hooking up the 5th wheel was another concern, as I can not see the goose ball, but proper placement of a car antenna and magnet allowing me to see the center line of my truck and camper and as soon as the hitch hits the antenna I am centered over the ball. I love it.

One of the best purchases I have ever made when it comes to towing a fifth wheel.

One year later and still very glad I made the switch. I have had to re-inflate the air bag a few times, but I have no regrets whatsoever about this purchase.
Jeremy - 08/12/2022

This thing is great! Install was a breeze took about 2 hours to install taking my time and torque. All I did was sat the pin box up on cardboard and wooden blocks, then slid the pin box under the king pin when it was close enough. A buddy and I installed it.

Towing is very smooth and nice and easy. No bucking.

Everything is great with this gooseneck pin box. I'm extremely happy and I'm even at the camp site right now reviewing this! Thanks etrailer.

Improved ride, no hitch in the box of my truck!

I had this hitch delivered to my RV dealer for installation. I failed to give them instructions or link to video, and there were no instructions in the box. However, it was a pretty straightforward install. I picked up the RV, aired the bag to “half” on the indicator and it rode like a dream… as I expected it would. SOO much better than using a fifth wheel to me. But then again, I’m a very strong proponent of goosenecks anyway. Been pulling trailers off and on for… let’s just say over 45 years.

After dealing with the awkward 5th wheel hitch and pin box for many years on several RV's, I decided to try the Goose Box. Absolutely the very best mod I've done on my 2019 Alpine 5th wheel.

Great. Best mod Ive made in a long time.

I had changed from a 2500 to a 3500 DRW that happened to include the GM puck system.

I was left with a choice: do I spend hundreds on a puck adapter system to allow my old industry standard rail fifth wheel hitch to work with my new truck? Or do I sell it for as much as I can, and change over to something like the Goosebox?

In the end, I was able to sell my old fifth wheel hitch and purchase this Goosebox, and the difference cost about as much as the adapter would have cost. Furthermore, the bed of my truck is now eternally empty and usable without needing to climb in and disassemble a heavy hitch, and I even lost a bit of weight in the bed.

Yes, the Goosebox is heavy, but it is certainly not heavIER than a normal pinbox plus the weight of my old hitch. If my guess is right, I probably lost 50-100 lbs.

To add to that, once the bag is inflated, the ride is so smooth. It's easily one of the best upgrades I did to my truck and trailer setup.

Yes, hooking up is SLIGHTLY more complex than a traditional fifth wheel, but the time difference is minutes at most. Less, once you get used to it, or you have a good spotter to help.

I kept the old pin box around, because I will want to keep this setup if I ever change trailers!

When I attempted to install this the width was 1/2" smaller than the trailer original. It took me about 15 calls to etrailer, the distributor and back and forth. Finally the distributor gave me the name if the manufacturer. When the women from the manufacturer helping me said, "Let me look at he specs". I knew I had the right person. It was at the limit as far as installing on my trailer.

Now that it's installed I love it.

I have no issues with etrailer, their service is great. Their front line people are very knowledgeable and give immediate answers your questions. They take your orders Leaving you feeling good with your interaction. My three stars are for their shipping. They ship with Estes and it took 17 days to get my product. etrailer, you can do better with your shipping.

Thank you for your review. This item was too large for UPS so it needed to ship freight. Freight does take longer in shipping than UPS. Even if you choose an expedited shipping, our team will call you and let you know that it can not ship expedited.

Great, we truely do enjoy our Goosebox. One import point is remembering to inflate the pin box and grease the locking mechanism. We have had no problems at all. Very well built and easy to use.
Ernie - 04/13/2022

After one year of use the Goosebox has been a joy to pull with. Initial hookup is a learning curve compared to a traditional 5th wheel hitch but simple and quick after a few trips. Found a bed mounted camera eases the hookup process and
love the open space of our truck bed when unhooked!

I unpacked it recently and found there are two Allen head bolts on top of Goode box, one of them looks like it was cross threaded at the factory, has not been resolved yet.

I see in your account that the manufacturer is sending you some new hardware.

Ordered this to replace OEM king pin on my 2019 Solitude 375RES. Due to it being delivered via freight it took a little longer than expected, had to make an appointment to have it delivered, not to big of a deal. The cardboard this comes in is very hefty, as it should be for the weight of the item. As stated by other, there was not any instructions included, easy to find online though. I am not the mechanical type but a little handy with basic tools and it took me about 2.5 hours, this includes taking the old pin box off. Watched a few videos on how people used wood blocks and used the tailgate of the truck to install. I was worried about braking the zerk fitting off so I attached the couple to my goose ball. I than used blocks of wood to shore it up and used the truck and the fifth wheel to line it up. Hooking up is easy. On my test drive I can tell this will handle better, did not have as much chucking as with the fifth wheel hitch. Looking forward to our next camping trip to give it a true test.

Received in good order.
Easy to install,
you do need two people to install . Heavy.
one problem, the grease fitting was not installed properly . it came with an insert grease fitting. the whole was a threaded hole . I bought a Grease fitting and screwed it in. Before fixing it I called etrailer and told them about the grease fitting. they said it was a defective unit and they would ship me a new one. problem was I had already installed this one. I was not going to uninstall and reinstall another unit just for a grease fitting. this is why I purchased my own fitting and installed it.

It has worked exactly as expected, very happy with it!

I finally reached the point where I could no longer remove my standard fifth wheel hitch by myself. My only option was to leave my hitch in the bed of my truck for the entire travel season, April to October for us. Not a good thing when I needed my full bed. After hours of research the Goose Box seemed to be my best option. I had put the Box on our previous fifth wheel but didn't tow it much before we traded it for a 2020 Jayco Pinnacle. I had the dealer change the Box over to the new Jayco. It is by far the best towing, best riding and best handling fifth wheel/truck combo we have ever owned, and that has been a few. Our 2020 F350 has the camera system which makes hookup relatively painless. The 5 pound ball is so much easier to remove than a 200 pound hitch. Well worth the money and highly recommend it.

Hitch set up is great, well built, and frees up a lot of room in the back of the truck when not towing. The instructions help get it installed with a lot of adjustment for different platforms but YouTube helps figure out how to use it. Ordering is an issue, the estimated arrival date isn’t even a guess. It’s a freight delivery so don’t expect it anywhere near the estimate shown on the site. Your purchase goes in a que that could be backed up which should be communicated before you purchase it but it’s not.

I installed this hitch, in less than 1.5 hours with a little help. hooked up to my truck and pulled my toy hauler. I could not believe the difference. the only complaint is there was only 4 bolt/nut/washer assy. which is legal, and plenty strong. so I used a couple of the old bolts. I did not like the 4 empty holes
