Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.
You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.
A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.
This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The red section on the top of the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (4,500 lbs). The red section on the bottom of the scale indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be within the green section when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box. This is gonna replace your factory pin box on your fifth wheel trailer. It's going to allow you to then pull your trailer with your gooseneck ball in your truck bed. So whether you are one of those that typically pulls gooseneck trailers, and you've got like a fifth wheel camper that you're wanting to pull rather than having to load that big, heavy fifth wheel hitch into your truck bed. And then take it back out, when you're ready to go back to work, this is going to convert your fifth wheel trailer to work with that gooseneck ball.
So it is gonna make it a lot more convenient for you. And this is designed specifically to work with the Lippert 1116 and 1716 fifth wheel pin boxes. So, it's gonna be a very simple installation. Basically, you'll just unbolt the original pin box, lower that down. Put this one up in its place.
They do include these shims here that you'll put in between the pin box and then your wings on your trailer. And then just reuse that original hardware to put it in place. So while it's very simple, it's not going to be super easy because these are very heavy. So you'll definitely want at least a couple of sets of hands to lower that original pin box, put this one up in its place, make sure those shims are in the correct position and then put your hardware in. And then once it's all installed, of course, you'll have your coupler that's going to hook on to your 2 and 5/16 inch hitch ball in your truck bed.
And they've got the pin style latch here. That's going to make sure that that ball is securely in there as you're going down the road. Now this is gonna be just a tiny bit shorter than your Lippert 1716 pin box. So, that could potentially cause a little bit of clearance issues for you when you're turning. And you can see I've got this approximately level.
This lowest frontmost hole here, I'm measuring it right at 9 and 3/16 of an inch to the center of that hole. So if you measure from the bottom of your coupler to that hole to kind of give you an idea of how much shorter this is than your pin box. But if you have that Lippert 1116 or 1716, this is gonna fit in place for you. Like I said, you might just lose a little bit of that clearance as you're turning. This is a nice, heavy-duty steel construction. Gen-Y has a great reputation for building very robust, solid products. And this is no exception. It's gonna hold up well, do a good job for you. It's got a 30,000 pound towing capacity. Of course, that is the weight of the trailer and the load included. It's gonna have a pin weight capacity range of between 2,000 pounds and 4,500 pounds. And the reason for that range is because of our shock absorbing technology here. So, if you have anything less than 2,000 pounds, it's not really gonna engage that system properly. If you have more than that 4,500 pounds, it's gonna be too much for the system. So you don't wanna overtax it. So, you want to make sure that you're in that range. To help you with that, they do include this little meter here, so you can see it's got that green and red on that sticker. And then you've got that white line there. So you wanna make sure that white line lines up with that green portion, and that's going to indicate that it's all within that ideal range. If not, you'll have to rearrange some of the load in your trailer to get into that position. But so, it's nice that they include that to help make sure that you're within that right range. Our shop, shock absorbing technology here, you can see, we do have these arms on both sides. Basically the way this works, at each pivot point, it's gonna function like a torsion axle. So if you're familiar with that concept, I've got a cutaway here, so you can kind of see a little bit better. So we're gonna have these square bars on the inside and then these rubber cords all around it. So, as your arms flex with the movement of the truck and the trailer as you're hitting bumps in the road and that sort of thing. That bar is gonna turn against those rubber cords. It's gonna help to kind of absorb that shock and movement. So it is going to make it a much smoother, more comfortable ride for you. It's gonna reduce your chucking and rough fore and aft motion. It's also gonna help limit your bouncing, jarring up and down motion. So, it's gonna be a lot smoother for you and for the trailer, whatever you're pulling. If it's a camper, you'll be able to get to your destination without dishes having fallen out of cabinets and that sort of thing. So it is going to make it a lot smoother for you because it's not going to transfer the shock from the trailer up to the truck and vice versa. That any bumps that you hit in the truck, aren't gonna be transferred back to the trailer. So it's gonna be a lot smoother for both sides. This does use that torsion kind of technology. So rather than like airbags that are gonna require a lot of maintenance, make sure that you have the right air pressure and that sort of thing in there. This is basically just gonna be like a set it and forget it kind of situation. So once you get it installed, it's gonna automatically use that technology to absorb that road shock. Of course, you will wanna make sure that you're within that weight range as we talked about, but it's gonna be a lot less to maintain, a lot fewer moving parts that will need to be replaced as you're going down the road over the years. It will hold up well for you for a long time. So like I said, this is gonna be a nice high quality, heavy-duty steel. They do have this powder coat finish that's gonna help resist wear and corrosion. On the sides here, you've got these cross-shaped holes that's gonna be where your safety chains can hook into. So you'll have that secondary connection there. And this is made here in the USA, so you can trust it is gonna be a nice quality, like I said, Gen-Y is well known for building very robust, durable products. So, I think you'll be very happy with this. If you are wanting to convert your fifth wheel to work with your gooseneck ball. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
