Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.
You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.
A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.
This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The red section on the top of the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (4,500 lbs). The red section on the bottom of the scale indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be within the green section when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel-Gooseneck Pin Box. This is going to replace the factory pin box on your 5th wheel trailer. It's going to allow you to then pull it with your gooseneck hitch. This is designed specifically to replace the Lippert 1621 and 1621HD 5th wheel pin boxes.
So if you have either one of those pin boxes, you can trust this is going to fit right up in place of that original. So it's gonna be very easy or very simple to get mounted. These kind of boxes are of course, very heavy, so you will need at least a couple sets of hands to help you take the original one down, put this one up in its place, but then you can just reuse that original hardware to get it bolted in, and it will be ready to go. So this end is gonna attach right up to where the original pin box is currently attached. And then you're going to have your ball coupler down here, which is going to accommodate your 2 5/16 inch hitch ball in your truck.
Does have the pin latch here, so it's gonna make sure that you have a nice, solid connection there, and it won't be coming off. Now this is a little bit shorter than the 1621 and 1621HD. So you might have a little bit of clearance issues on your tight turns and that sort of thing. So I've got this pretty much level, maybe just a little off level, and you can see it's right about 19 and 1/8 of an inch to the center of that bottom front most hole there, So use that as a reference point for your pin box to see how much of a height difference there is gonna be there and to make sure that it will work for your application. If you are gonna have that reduced clearance, make sure that's not gonna be a huge issue for you.
But this is gonna be a really nice heavy duty steel construction. Gen-Y does have a great reputation for building very robust, solid components. This is gonna be no exception. This does have a 30,000 pound weight capacity. That's the towing capacity, the weight of the trailer plus the load included.
It's gonna have a pin weight capacity range of between 2000 pounds and 4,500 pounds. The reason they have that range is because of our shock absorbing functionality theory. You're gonna need at least 2000 pounds to actually engage the shock absorbing capability and any more than 4,500 is gonna be too much. They're gonna max out the system, you're not gonna get that shock absorbing functionality. So they do include this, a pin weight, or a meter here to monitor your pin weight. So you can see you've got the green and red sticker there, and then that white line. So you wanna make sure that white line is lined up with that green portion. Otherwise you'll need to readjust your load before you start towing, to make sure that that pin weight is gonna be within that appropriate range. Our shock absorbing functionality here is gonna be a really great option, a really great feature to this. If you're not familiar with these arms, you can see here at each pivot point, there's gonna be a square bar with rubber cords all around it. I've got a cutaway to kind of show you how that's gonna look. So you've got these squares here and then the rubber cords all around them. So as you're hitting bumps and going down the road, as those arms pivot, those bars are going to resist. The rubber is going to prevent those bars from turning freely. So it's going to help absorb that shock. So it's going to reduce the amount of chucking and rough fore and aft motions that you get. It's also going to limit your bouncing, jarring up and down motion. So it's gonna make it a much smoother and steady ride for you having that. And it's gonna prevent a shock being transferred back to your trailer from your truck and vice versa back from your trailer up to your truck. So it's gonna make it a much more enjoyable ride, gonna ensure that when you get to your destination, you're not gonna have to worry about dishes falling out of cabinets and that sort of thing, if you're pulling a camper behind you. And this doesn't have any airbags to it, so it's gonna be a lot less maintenance, how there's fewer moving parts that would have to be repaired or replaced. So it is gonna be a really nice option for you to just kinda put it in place and not have to worry about it again. You can see we do have these cross shaped holes that provide the attachment points for your safety chains, so that you'll have that second source of connection there. Like I said Gen-Y does build very robust products. This does have a powder coat finish, that's gonna help resist wear and corrosion, so it's gonna last you a nice long time and it is made here in the USA. So you can trust it's made it to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. So if you are looking to switch your 5th wheel trailer over to be pulled by a gooseneck whether you have multiple gooseneck trailers and just the one 5th wheel, you wanted to save yourself the hassle of having to load in that 5th wheel hitch all the time. Or if you just think it'd be easier to hook up to that gooseneck ball in your truck bed and leave all of this attached to the trailer, this is gonna be a great option for you to switch over from that 5th wheel to something that you can connect to that gooseneck ball. So that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
