Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.
You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.
A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
The Gen-Y pin box adapter makes hooking up your trailer easy thanks to its automatic latch. When your hitch ball moves into the coupler tube, the latch instantly engages. No need to manually close the socket once the coupler is on the ball.
Disconnecting is fast and easy too. This normally requires that you crawl into your truck bed to access and release the latch. But the Gen-Y adapter box can be disconnected from outside of your truck bed. The included cable attaches to the latch on the coupler's base. Just run the cable up your trailer frame and secure it in a convenient place. When you're ready to disengage the coupler, simply pull the cable to release the ball from the socket. No need to climb into your truck bed.
The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.
This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The top red mark on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (3,500 lbs). The bottom red mark indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). For the built-in shock absorption to function effectively, the scale's white indicator marker should be within the green section when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen-Y shock-absorbing 5th wheel to gooseneck pin box. This is gonna replace the 5th wheel pin box on your trailer so that you can pull it with your gooseneck ball on your truck. This does also have the shock absorbing capability, so it is gonna make it a much smoother ride for you as you're going down the road. Now, this is designed specifically to replace the Lippert Turning Point 5th wheel pin boxes, so it's going to mount right in place of that original pin box. These mounting holes are gonna be the same, so you'll be able to reuse that original hardware to bolt this right in place.
Now, of course it is a simple installation, not necessarily an easy one, because these are pretty heavy, so you'll definitely want at least a second set of hands to help you lower the original, put this one up in its place, or I've seen some people use a jack in the back of their truck or something like that to make that a little bit easier, but these are pretty heavy. So you wanna make sure that you've got plenty of support. So this system is going to hook up to your standard 2 5/16 inch hitch ball on your truck. You can see, we do have this latch coupler here so that we can pull on the backside and it's going to release that latch, so much easier than having to reach over the bed rails on your truck to mess with a pin in there. Being able to stand back by your trailer and just pull on that lever, or on this cable, included cable, it's going to operate that lever for you to disengage your latch so you can get unhooked and everything.
That's gonna be a very convenient feature there. This is going to be just a tiny bit shorter than your original pin box. So if we measure from the center of our coupler here to the first set of pin holes down here, this bottom lower one, we're looking at right about I'm gonna say, I'm gonna call about 29 inches. So might be just a tiny bit shorter than your original. So that could cause some reduction in your clearance if you're taking corners and that sort of thing, so something to be mindful of there.
But this is a nice sturdy steel construction. Gen-Y has a great reputation for building very robust products, and this is no exception by any means. It's gonna give us a towing capacity of 21,000 pounds. That of course is the weight of your trailer plus the load included. It's also going to give us a pin weight capacity range of between 1,500 pounds and 3,500 pounds.
And the reason for that range is because of our shock-absorbing technology here. You don't want to have less than that 1,500 pounds, where it's not going to properly engage our torsion function. If you have any more than that 3,500, it's gonna be too much for the system. So you wanna make sure that you're in that nice sweet spot. And to help you with that, they include this pin weight scale here on this bottom side. We'll zoom in a little bit so you can see that better. So you can see this is a red, green, red sticker and then we've got that white line there. So we wanna make sure that that sticker, that green portion of the sticker, is lined up with that white line. So that's when we know that everything is going to be properly balanced. So if it's not lined up, you're gonna have to adjust your load in your trailer. So having that meter there is going to make it easy to know that our torsion function is going to work properly. And speaking of that torsion function, do have a cutaway here so you can kind of see how this is gonna work a little bit better. So right here at our pivot points, we're going to have these square bars inside. And then around those square bars are these rubber cords. So as our pivot points move, that square bar is going to turn inside that housing, and it's going to be dampened by those rubber cords. So that's going to help reduce that movement, make sure that our motion or our our road shock and those sort of things, it's gonna limit that transfer from our truck to our trailer and vice versa. So it's gonna make it a much, much smoother ride. It's gonna reduce that chucking and rough fore-and-aft motion as well as limit the bouncing and jarring up-and-down motion. So it's gonna be a nice smooth, steady ride for us. Having that torsion technology is going to be a lot less maintenance than, say, if you we're to have an airbag in here, like some other systems use airbags, are pretty nice. They allow you to adjust based on your load so that you can accommodate larger loads, give you more support and that sort of thing but they do require a lot of maintenance. You have to make sure that there's enough air pressure in there and adjust that accordingly. So this system is more of like a set it and forget it. Once you get it installed, it's just gonna automatically have that shock-absorbing capability, so it's gonna be a lot less maintenance for you in the long run. You can see we do have these cross holes for our safety chains that hook right in there so that we can get that connected for our secondary connection. And this does have a powder-coated finish to help resist rust and corrosion. Will hold up really well for you for a long time to come. On the backside here, I'm not sure if you'll be able to see it very well, but there is a grease zerk right there by our coupler. Make sure everything's gonna stay well lubricated. So very easy to keep that maintained. And this is made here in the USA, so you can trust it's made to the high quality standards we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the U.S. And like I said, Gen-Y does have a great reputation for building very sturdy, robust products, so I think this is gonna hold up really well for you, do a great job for a long time to come. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Man,this thing is GREAT! It was 1 day late on delivery, but other than that, it bolted right up using the existing holes, NO DRILLING! I was THRILLED!
It works as advertised, the powder coat paint is awesome, the auto latch works flawlessly. I am very pleased
I would recommend anyone wanting to switch a 5th wheel kingpin to a gooseneck to use Gen-Y. They got their act together!

Installation took 1 hour with 2 people. Made very well. Pulled trailer great and expect ride to get better with break in. I went with 3.5k and on lighter side of recommended king pin weight. Shipping was quick and had email notifications the whole way. Will use etrailer again

If you have a short bed truck do not buy this gooseneck. At first it seem fine but unless it’s a long bed it’s shorter than you think. If you go up a small incline sideways so the rear of your RV will not scrape it will give enough to crush the side of your truck. I thought the gooseneck would give me a little more length or space and it did not it was actually shorter only in a long bed truck would you get better space

This was better than I expected. Truck felt smoother going down the road with our new 5th wheel than with our previous rig with a standard 5th wheel hitch even though the new rig was about 3.5k lbs heavier. I believed the claims of a smoother ride because of the torsion action but I was really amazed at how much better it was. The one I was skeptical about was the improved mileage claim. After a 7 week long RV trip putting over 4K towing miles with a heavier, (and slightly taller trailer), I was averaging the same, even slightly better, as with my previous rig with the same tow vehicle. This setup also freed up the bed of my truck tremendously. It also lowered my pin weight/payload number by about 70lbs as compared with the original Pinbox and 5th wheel hitch I had. Great product.

Installation was very straight forward, it is heavy so you need something to prop it up for you while you get at least one bolt started in each side. I used the bucket on my tractor to hold it up. I only have one tow in so far for about 50 miles so still early to review. It certainly works as advertised for taking out a lot of the trailer feedback on rough roads, uneven transitions, etc. It is an improvement in ride quality and makes towing a big fifth wheel more comfortable. Necessary? Probably not but it does spoil you a little bit. One problem though that Gen-Y is working on fixing is the ball to pinbox is a little bit longer and I did hit the bed cap at about 60 deg of turn while backing in at an angle. It cleared when I tested it in the flat driveway, but not by much. They are going to come up with a fix. I'm at 7 1/2" clearance from the overhang to the bed caps sitting flat. This is with a '18 Chev Silverado HD 8' bed and a '19 Momentum 351M

The gen-y hitch is awesome. Very glad I switched from 5th wheel to gooseneck. Love having the extra space and with the removal of the puck ball I have a full open bed. The gen-y torsion system makes for a smooth ride

Quick, easy install. And this thing took the fifth wheel amazingly. My first trip was from Tulsa to Memphis. Most of the ride was 70 cruise control and there were quite a few times I saw the fifth wheel bouncing around in the back, but hardly felt it in the truck. I have a 2019 F350 DRW. The shipping was quick, I bought on a Sunday and had by Wednesday. The install was fairly easy with two people. Just don't forget to retorque the pin box bolts after a few hundred miles. No regrets purchasing this thing.

received in a timely manner. the shock absorber may help up and down motion but on short test drive i still felt back and forth jerking. my other gooseneck bent tho so still happy with how solid this looks and i think i wont have issues with it breaking.

Bolted right on. And my camper tows better than ever! I have a flatbed with a recessed ball. The 5th wheel hitch was just too high. Causing the camper to ride nose high. This solved all those problems and cleared up my bed too!

I’ve owned many trailers with many different styles of hitch’s. This hitch makes your trailer float behind the truck, there is no noise, no surging. One of the very best hitch’s I have ever had.

I put a flatbed on my truck so I could load my side by side and go wherever we want. This meant I had to figure out a new way to pull my toyhauler. I had a ford factory fifth wheel prep package with the reese hitch. With the flatbed I cant use this hitch anymore. I was planning to use the Anderson ultimate fifthwheel hitch but would have to change the pin box on my toyhauler as well since it was a flexair and Anderson says not to use a pin box that pivots. Sooo......I started searching for a new pin box and came across this hitch. This solved all my problems! Don't need an Anderson hitch as this pin box will attach to the ball on my flatbed. I called and talked with Chrissy who was super helpful. I ordered the pin box and it arrived yesterday. With some help I got it installed in less than an hour. (2 or 3 person job). It looks great and I'm excited to test it out. Fast shipping and great packaging. Thanks etrailer.com!
