Whether you're hauling construction equipment or you're carrying your ATVs to the mud park, towing heavy-duty loads can be an intense job. You definitely don't want to have to deal with sharp, jolting movement every time your trailer hits a bump. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock. This can result in a rough ride for you and your cargo. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Spartan from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.
Built into the Spartan are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.
This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 5" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 5" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Gen-Y Spartan Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler. This is gonna be a shock absorbing design that's gonna help ensure a nice smooth steady ride as well as improved ride comfort and less wear on your equipment when you're towing your trailer. And this does have a sturdy four inch diameter square inner tube that's just gonna simply slide into your four inch diameter square outer tube that you already have on your trailer. And so it is gonna be fairly simple to get installed. Of course, this is very heavy so you're probably gonna want a second set of hands to help lift it up, make sure that the pin aligns properly.
They do include one pin for you, and you can see we do have three different adjustment holes here to accommodate a range of vertical adjustments when used with your outer tube. The distance between our top hole and our bottom hole here, center to center is approximately five and three eight of an inch. So you've got quite a bit of room to adjust there to fit your application. Our coupler socket is going to secure to a three inch hitch ball. So now that's not your standard gooseneck ball size so make sure that that's gonna work for you.
If you've got a standard ball we do have other options available but if you do have a three inch ball this is gonna work well for you. It's got the pin style latch here to secure onto that ball. This is made here in the USA of a heavy duty steel construction so it is gonna hold up really well for you. It's gonna provide a gross towing weight capacity of 40,000 pounds and a vertical load limit or maximum tongue weight of 7,000 pounds. And to help you make sure that you're getting the right tongue weight, they do have this tongue weight scale built in here.
So you can see we've got the red, green and red sticker and then that white painted line. So you wanna make sure once you have your trailer fully loaded that that white white line is lining up with that green portion of the sticker to make sure that you've got the optimal amount of tongue weight. And the reason that's so important is because of our shock absorbing design. So this is gonna function similar to a torsion axle if you're familiar with that concept. So I've got a cutaway here to kind of show you what the inside's gonna look like.
So at our pivot points, we're gonna have a square bar like this and then we've got these rubber cords on each side. So as our head moves, it's going to try and turn at that square bar and then it's going to be resisted by those rubber cords. So that's going to help absorb any of that movement and shock so it doesn't transfer from your trailer up to your tow vehicle and vice versa, again, helping to reduce the strain on your equipment and make the ride a lot more comfortable for you. And this is gonna have a maximum travel at the pivot points of about two inches so won't be too much for you. It's gonna really reduce that road shock. One of the really nice things about this design is that you're not gonna have airbags or anything like that that are gonna need to be maintained, aired up, let air out, that sort of thing. We're also gonna have fewer moving parts that are gonna need to be repaired or replaced so it is very minimal maintenance kind of design. Just get it installed and you're ready to go. An added benefit of this is that we are also gonna have our coupler offset from our square tube here. So that is gonna give us about five inches of additional clearance so we can make a little bit tighter turns without having to worry about our trailer making contact with our cab and that sort of thing. Like I said, this is made here in the USA of a steel construction. It's got a powder coat finished that's gonna help resist wear and corrosion. If you're not familiar with Gen-Y they do have a a great reputation for building very solid, robust, heavy duty products and this is no exception. This is gonna be a very beefy option to help take some of that shock and wear off your equipment. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Get a smooth ride when towing your heavy-duty equipment trailer or toy hauler with this shock-absorbing gooseneck coupler. Offset design gives 5" of extra clearance between your cab and trailer. Fits standard 4" square outer tube. 40K GTW.E trailer customer service stayed in contact with me through the entire process.
It took a few weeks to be delivered but I was in no hurry so plan accordingly.
The Spartan hitch was as advertised.
The only negative feed back I have is that the neck pin didn’t have a shoulder so it would go all the way through the holes. I use my existing through bolt anyway so I didn’t need it. Again plan accordingly. Not to be confused with the ball hitch pin. I’m strictly speaking of the slide neck adjustment pin.
Overall very pleased with etrailer and gen y.
This seems to be an excellent upgrade to the coupler on my Belmont trailer. Less than 100 miles on it so far but the trailer seems to jerk the truck around less on these fine Pennsylvania roads. It is helpful to have an extra pair of hands when installing. The powder coating made the tube on the coupler a little thicker than the original. I used a wire brush and some spray lithium grease on the inside of the trailer tube and was able to install the new coupler just by working it back and forth with minimal powder coating coming off. My trailer is registered at 9,999 lbs which is why I went with the 3.5k TW option. Haven’t had an opportunity to put a machine on the trailer yet to see if that was wise or not but a load of 18 - 6”x6”x12’ pressure treated beams barely moved the indicator. After my first trip I opted to change it to using the hole closest to the coupler as the trailer had a little too much angle back towards the last axle. Even in the bottom hole I still have 9” of clearance between the top of my tailgate on my Ram 2500 and the trailer.
I don't see how I lived without this. We often experienced a "bucking" when crossing bridges or even on certain roads with expansion joints. We were getting bounced around so much I can't imagine how our horses survived. This product has removed that completely. It also provides a slight offset if you have a shortbed. I have an 8' bed, but welcome the extra space between my tailgate and the trailer. Well worth the money! I will never tow a gooseneck trailer again without this.
The difference is substantial! I won’t say you can’t tell the trailer is back there but the ride comfort is outstanding!!!!
With my trailer which is only a 6 k trailer I bought the 7.5k hitch yet empty it is maxed out wish there was a way to adjust
Great hitch ... love the adjustability of the hitch to match height of different trailers i pull since i hot shot and do power onlys also
Holes in hitch don’t line up with the hole in tube on my 2018 MAXXD Trailer. With holes lined up the hitch is offset towards passenger side of truck. Was really looking forward to working this hitch. Very disappointed
I have a 2020 Silverado Custom Trail Boss 1500 and I pull a Shadow 2 horse slant gooseneck with 9' LQ and a bump out. The Trail Boss has a 5'9" box so the gooseneck is rather close the the cab. I bought the Gen-Y Spartan shock absorbing gooseneck coupler with 5" offset and it makes a huge difference pulling down the road. We have hauled the horses from MN to ND, MT, WY, CO, KS, NE, IA and back and have nothing but great things to say about the Gen-Y coupler. It is a must!
Definitely rides better when the trailer is loaded. Only issue I have is that it increases the hitch height (my truck is lifted), but that's just the nature of the beast. Hopefully it hold's up to the Arizona sun.
Quick Service! Only one problem the GEN Y doesn’t match up on my Liberty Trailers gooseneck retaining pin holes not basically they are an inch off forcing my trailer to be off had to bring it to a machine shop for proper alignment.
the product works great just be sure to order the correct weight rating for the loads you intend to haul. if you only haul 10,000 lbs. get the hitch for that rating. even though you can haul 15,000 lbs. you won't get the benefit of the flex if your hitch has a gross tongue weight that is too heavy. other than that, it's a great product.
just as i expected. fits great and easy to install.
the young man in the video must be very strong, cause it took some umph to get the tube inserted and pin put in by myself. but hey, this fat old man got'er done!!
Some of the best Service i have been given while ordering something on the phone in years . Even when she did not know the answer her willingness to find out was great . Thanks again
works great
Fast and exactly what I needed. Thanks Carol
